I’m not sure if you can point me in the right direction. I gave up citizenship over 10 years ago, to live in the US. I’m trying to get my GY papers back in order. How would I start that process?

Hello there. Thank you for reaching out. Remember to like this video and subscribe so that it might reach more viewers like you.
To answer your question, I have cited below a column from the Guyana citizenship laws. If this does now help, I can go ahead and make a video about this topic at a later date since lots of people have requested that I do so.
[Former citizens who have voluntarily renounced their Guyanese citizenship in order to acquire citizenship in another country are eligible for "remigrant" status (Guyana 17 Mar. 1999, Sec. 5), which entitles them to numerous "concessions" that the government has put in place to attract Guyanese to return (ibid., Sec. 2). These benefits can be obtained by contacting a Remigration Officer at the Protocol and Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ibid., Sec. 4). The applicant must be 18 years of age or older, have resided abroad for at least four consecutive years and not be a "deportee" (ibid., Sec. 3). Citizens of Guyana who meet these conditions and hold a valid Guyanese passport may also be approved for "remigrant" status (ibid.).]
      I hope this helps.

If someone is a Guyanese citizen and has a Guyanese passport can’t they just go live there? What exactly is reimigration application? Why would that be even a thing?

Hello there Damen, you are right but it’s not that easy. Imagine someone living abroad for about 30 years and returning. His or her passport may or may not be expired and other affairs might not be in order. The person might have even had a life where he or she was. So, the Remigration Scheme is designed for returning Guyanese citizens - not to give them leverage over ordinary Guyanese - to ease their transition back to Guyana. I hope that helps answer your question.

@@nicholasc20 yes it does thank you for the reply... am a guyanese citizen with a passport (up to date) I was wondering what would I need to do to work in Guyana. In USA for example I would need to get a social security number. In canada, a social insurance number. Is Guyana similar or is a passport/citizenship certificate enough to get working?

@@damentrent hello there Damen. Glad I helped. In Guyana you will need your NIS/social security card, an ID, and your TIN (tax identification number). In most cases you won’t need your NIS number. Just an ID and the TIN, both of which take some time to procure, to start working. Does that help?
