The kids at simple living Alaska gave you a shout out as they were making your balsamic pickled Brussels sprouts. I'm going in the kitchen right now to make my first homemade mayo. Wish me luck!
Todd and Rachel, I'm sure this is boring to you to make these simple videos about pantry pulls, inventory and meal plans BUT we really really appreciate your time. Your followers are learning canning, storage, gardening, meal planning etc etc as newbies. We are about 20 years behind your learning process. We are fortunate to have you share your knowledge on each topic and you are a great teacher. Love this channel.
Becky at Acre Homestead had a great idea for storing food in a chest freezer. She sorts and stores items in reusable grocery bags and stacks them in the chest freezer. That way you you lift out the bags by the handles to retrieve what you are after and restack the bags in the freezer. It was a game changer for me!!!
It's really easy to stick a whiteboard marker on your freezer, and write what's going in and out on the front of the freezer. It doesn't hurt the freezer and it makes keeping track of dates and the content manageable. Love your content. Thanks!
Rachel, I could honestly listen to you all day. You have such a kind, honest nature. I love how you ramble on.....like I do. Thank you for sharing your day to day tips, I take something away from every episode. Thank you ❤
Don't you just love to go to your own grocery store? Love how creative you are with the meal planning. I need to get better at that because I end up working around the farm all day and then wonder what I am going to cook for dinner.
Yummmm! I just pulled from my cellar everything I needed to make a double batch of chili, the first of the season. It feels beyond good to know that everything was grown in my garden , except the venison burger meat (from hunting) and beans. Big bowls of Chili Mac with cheddar cheese on top. Best feeling in the world!
That is a huge accomplishment congratulations and so exciting on your hunting successes! Everything we make is from wild game as well and I just don’t think these is anything better 😊
Good morning Rachel and Todd! My husband Stew and I are so inspired by you both. Because of you, this year we grew our first small garden, built storage shelves in our basement, and bought a pressure canner! I can't believe i get to share a helpful hint to you! To open your jar, place a fork or spoon horizontal across your jar and put the pointy end of your jar opener on the utensil handle. Saves your jar lid. Thank you for all the great ideas! Stay healthy!
My 11 year old daughter and I started the Amish Friendship bread today. She is so excited to give some to her best friend who likes to bake. Thanks for bringing a childhood memory for me back around to my daughter.
We don't like Tuna salad but love salmon salad. Glad you made that, but called it Tuna. You got a shout out today on Simple Living Alaska. They love you too.
I envy your ability to remember what everything is in the freezer, or maybe I just didn't see labels. Everything sounds so yummy! I also make fire starters with the leftover wax in the candles. Melt down toss in a few cotton balls to soak up the wax. Then I add it to dryer lint inside an empty tp roll.
We do this too. Egg cartons, pack each cell with dryer lint, and pour some wax over them. Rip off a cell, and that's instant fire. We take then and store them up at our cabin in the woods - as we don't have a woodstove at the homestead (yet) ♥
Just a tip that I have learned, in case you don't find your can opener... use a butter knife across the top of the lid, under the church key opener, and it won't damage your lids.
I bet you would love the recipe from Carolyn over at homesteading family. She makes a fermented mayonnaise. It does not taste fermented but then it lasts so much longer homesteading family recipe 1 egg 1 t prepared mustard 1/2 t salt 2r lemon juice Add garlic, oregano etc OPTIONAL 2T ferment brine liquid, ***KEY INGREDIENT 1 1/4 cup oil Leave on counter 6 hours then refrigerator
I love love love your upstairs pantry. I got a few cabinets from Wayfair when I worked for them to make a makeshift pantry in our new place. I need to organize it. I love these videos. They're so motivating. I struggle a lot with motivation to do house work even though I've loved it for years, due to depression. You get up and go because you have to..but your videos make me want to.
Hi Rachel. Love your pantry. The way you keep all the things in their place. I wish I had a pantry like yours. That tuna looked good for lunch too. God Bless and have a great weekend. Mari'a. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃
I WOULD SO LOVE ur ADORABLE pantry off ur kitchen! I would keep it stocked just so I could spend more time in there, so cute!! Oh...this is just me, I know, but everytime u said tuna fish I cringed, I thought, ur man caught fresh salmon after like 7 years or something and u call it tuna? 🫣😏😉😉 That looked so yummy!! 👍👍
I love watching you shop from that amazing basement store! I just went down to my basement to pull out a few jars of chili con carne, and my homemade cornbread mix. Isn't it awesome to have already made deliciousness in the pantry?!!!
Rachel it is easy to open your jars with only your fingernails if you wear them short. You are only breaking the seal, usually one side of the lid hangs over a bit more. Give it a try.
Thanks for these good meal planning tips! Cool to see that you are keeping and using so much of your own labor and harvest. Have you ever tried layering browned pork chops with sour kraut, onions and sliced apples in a crock pot? Last time I made it I sprinkled about a half cup of brown sugar on top, with a quart jar of canned apples in light syrup. Sprinkled cinnamon sugar over that and tabs of butter. It makes a wonderful sweet and sour sauce, and the chops are always so tender. Cook on low 6 hours, or hi for 3.
Rachel-Since I don't have a freeze dryer. I would like to see if you could make freeze dried egg yokes to rehydrate and make mayo? That would be interesting experiment. Just an idea.
Love your videos, so relaxing. Old southern fisherman's trick is to wash your hands with stainless steel. They even make stainless steel soap bars. Great for getting, fish, onion, garlic smells off your hands. I usually just one of my spoons. No soap required just water and stainless spoon .
Love your upstairs pantry! You could take off the doors and then you could see what is in there better. We removed all the doors from our pantry and now we can see everything. Makes it so much easier for us!
Now that we're retired and it's just the two of us, I also just make a meal. We don't do a lot of sides. We tend to make enough for leftovers for lunch.
Hi, Rachel! The Pry-a-lid is discontinued, but there is a can-opener called Vacumex sold in Europe. It has just the same funktion, does not damage your lids. Hope you can order it to the US, give me a shout otherwise. Greetings from Finland, Rebecca
Wow what a food storage system……I’ve been canning with my electric canner and loving that I can do four quarts of left overs easily. By the way the Nesco is on sale for $100 now …darn I just paid full price two weeks ago. Any hooo….maybe challenge yourself and use only what you have in the upstairs pantry….I’d love to have one like that and just bring up items for the week and put them in the lower cupboards to have ready… Food pantries are running low and I’m sure they’d take anything you don’t want except canning jarred foods….. You could make up a Thanksgiving basket for a family member or a friend with some items needing used up…..a package of bacon, loaf of friendship bread, jam and some eggs for the holiday breakfast menu. Just an idea… Even a pasta meal with freeze dried veggies and a recipe on how to make it if power goes out. I sent my daughter a feel better basket since she had bronchitis, canned chicken broth and homemade bread, bag homemade noodles, some echinacea tincture and a frozen roll of choc chip cookie dough for her to bake in her air fryer machine as she wants.Nothing like fresh baked cookies to make a person cheery…..😊
You can also get rid of onion and garlic smell on your hands if you rib your hands over your stainless steel faucet while they are soapy! Works great! Love your pantry, would love to have one, but no room.
Looks great👍🏽 I’m trying the Amish friendship starter now, I was glad to see your consistency of the starter. I wasn’t sure mine was made right. Now I know😊 Have a great evening you 2 ✌🏽
I started watching your channel when you did a tour of your pantry off the kitchen. That had to be well back into the before time, as my daughters and I refer to the pre-pandemic era. Thank you for sharing with lucky us!
I hope your jar opener turns up. But in the meantime, use an old junk lid on top of the lid you want to remove when you use your church key. That will help save your lids
I make candles for a living. People often return the empty jars which I reuse. I put a whole tray of the empty jars in the oven until melted. I pour the melted wax into a wicked coffee can for emergency use. The jars then are washed and reused. Because I use soy wax and it is easy to clean out the jars.
I really need to work my freezers too. It is so hard to get motivated to so so. I have lots of fish in the freezer and should can it. I live with my cousin who loves to fish but has developed an allergy against fish. I love fish patties as well as fish chowder. I am off the week of Thanksgiving so maybe that will be a good time to work on one of the freezers.
Perhaps this winter you can repurpose the cupboards in your upstairs pantry. Your baking stuff looks packed, maybe you can move some things downstairs and use that for more room for baking supplies?
Love your videos! Just a tip... how to get Garlic smell off your hands 🙌🏼 - under running water, rub a stainless steel spoon all over your fingers. Smell gone!😁
Have you thought of taking the door off the upstairs pantry with the canned goods in it? Perhaps seeing the overview like downstairs will encourage you to use the items. Once used up you could then move the baking goods over into that cupboard, put the doors back on and that way the baking goods can be more accessible and spread out a bit?

Great video. Could you please tell me the process to freeze your cabbage steaks and how you use them? I'm always looking for many ways to preserve. Thank you
Thank you for putting egg in your tuna salad. I have a friend from California who thought I was nuts when I did that. She said I’ve lived in several states and nobody has ever put eggs in their tuna salad. I didn’t know there is any other way!🤔
Rachel, apologies if you already circled back on this, but in a prior video you mentioned that your AA canner was not properly releasing pressure. May I ask what was the solve for this issue? Was it a recalibration of the gauge? I am experiencing similar at the moment and am not sure how to correct it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I love that you're showing how you shop and cook from your pantry! I was wondering what you use there for back up for when your electricity goes out? You have so much meat and garden produce in freezers and it would be sad to lose it. We've thought of using solar with battery storage like we do in our camper but wonder how feasible it would be for a house. What do you use?
I rest a butter knife across the top of the lid and apply pressure with the can opener on top of the butter knife so you don't puncture or dent your jarring lid and lift gently. ❤
Hi, Rachel! I love your "what's for dinner meals." I'm in the process of looking for another stand up freezer, as the one we have has been discontinued. Can you tell me what make and CF capacity yours are? Thank you in advance.
Rachel since you don't use the upstairs pantry why don't you take everything there downstairs. Use that space to store your empty jars that will make your life much easier when canning

The kids at simple living Alaska gave you a shout out as they were making your balsamic pickled Brussels sprouts. I'm going in the kitchen right now to make my first homemade mayo. Wish me luck!
I was coming to say that, too 🥰🥰
I just saw that.
Good Luck on your Mayo! And yes they did
I was looking for Rachel’s Brussel sprouts video, does anyone know which day she made them?
And yeah I saw that too, I was like “yeahhh”
Hahaha. I was just going to type this. I just finished watching their video
Todd and Rachel,
I'm sure this is boring to you to make these simple videos about pantry pulls, inventory and meal plans BUT we really really appreciate your time. Oh no these are fun for me to do
I apologize, I misunderstood you say in another video that you thought your pantry tours were boring to film. I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS. ❤️
Totally agree
I love the community we have all created as homesteaders and how we can all come together to help teach each other things! Such an amazing community!
Becky at Acre Homestead had a great idea for storing food in a chest freezer. She sorts and stores items in reusable grocery bags and stacks them in the chest freezer. Great idea. It doesn't take long for my paper list to get out of control.
Rachel, I could honestly listen to you all day. You have such a kind, honest nature. I love how you ramble on.....like I do. Thank you for sharing your day to day tips, I take something away from every episode. Thank you ❤

Cee, it is so easy to do, you blink and it is dinner time! We always think about it at the beginning of the week which tends to be so helpful!
Simple Living Alaska mentioned you! I hope you get lots more followers bc of it! Now thats a stocked Freeze & Pantry!! Yum!!
It’s officially turtle neck sweater season and I’m very happy! Love your pantry it’s beautiful ❤
I need that sweater. 😳
I love that sweater, it's very beautiful and looks so soft. Thanks for a great video as always
I love your pantry!
Try using the side hook on your manual can opener to get the jar lids off. I don’t seem to damage my lids with it. 😊
We are getting spoiled with all these videos!
I did the same lol. We are on the West Coast of Michigan and getting the first snow of the season.
Even better! I am in the middle of Minnesota and we missed the the last front that went through. Looking forward to the first real snow!
That is a huge accomplishment congratulations and so exciting on your hunting successes! Everything we make is from wild game as well and I just don’t think these is anything better 😊
I love your farmhouse Rachel. So much charm and character. It's so fitting how you grow and preserve so much of your food.
Only just found you and love you already! Thanks to Eric and Arielle

Yumm! Bacon would go well in that quiche. thanks for the tip on the candles.
Just heard you guys from Simply Living Alaska. I love seeing my favorite people watching each other channels ❤.

Do you add any wax to the drier lint? Do you use a whole TP roll per fire started? Been wanting to make some of these myself!
We do this too for the fire starters Jen! They are absolutely priceless especially after a long day and you just need a quick fire!
We do this too. Egg cartons, pack each cell with dryer lint, and pour some wax over them. Rip off a cell, and that's instant fire. We take then and store them up at our cabin in the woods - as we don't have a woodstove at the homestead (yet) ♥
You can put your butter knife between the church key and the lid and it won’t damage it.
What do you mean by church key?
You have my dream basement. Nice job.
Just a tip that I have learned, in case you don't find your can opener... use a butter knife across the top of the lid, under the church key opener, and it won't damage your lids.

One of these days my pantry will be full of our home grown vegetables and harvested meats that we catch or harvest. Thank you sharing with us.
Best trick for getting garlic smell off your hands is to run a steel spoon across the area. I don’t know how it works, but it does.
Rachel it is easy to open your jars with only your fingernails if you wear them short. You are only breaking the seal, usually one side of the lid hangs over a bit more. Give it a try.
I can do that with waterbath canned jars but not pressure canned, my nails just aren't strong enough
Thanks for the egg tip! Next time I make my own mayo I will try it.

I LOVE that sweater you are wearing !!!
You could fry an egg with hard yolk, then cut up. and add that's what I have done before less time than boiling if in a hurry. :)
I love your sweater in this video!! Love the white with those subtle colors.

Sometimes we scramble a quick egg for tuna salad instead of waiting for a boiled one. It works!
Interesting. I’m always wishing I had boiled eggs for my tuna.

Great going shopping with you!!
Gosh this is real neat!!! How you can just walk around and shop in your pantry. Whole meals. That are pretty darn good!
there is currently a newer version of pry a lid on Amazon for like 25... cookwise is the brand I think!
Love these videos! Also glad I'm not the only person with random herbs I haven;t put away yet hah
I really need to work my freezers too. It is so hard to get motivated to so so. I have lots of fish in the freezer and should can it. Thanks for the tour and your. Freezers looks good ✌️🇺🇸👍🌹❤️
I love these simple videos just as much as the other videos ❤
Cotton balls work for the candle wax too!
I don’t have a lid opener , I put a spoon on the lid and put the point on that instead of the lid. No damage to the lid.
Always enjoy watching you cook.
Oh no
I use painters' tape to label my goods in the freezer like the foil you used. Date and what in it.
Thank you for this video. Can you tell me how you have your canning lids hanging along your kitchen wall?
I put candle jars in the oven as I am cooling it down and then pour it into a pot reserved just for making votive candles. Nothing goes to waste
You need to get yourself a grocery basket 😁 you look lovely btw
💙💙💙💙 my husband and I watch every video never missed one but with your new camera with the wider lense is making it harder to watch bc of the blurry screen... can you try to set the camera off to the side more and not so on top of you so that way it's not so blurry i love everything yall do your a true inspiration and I don't want to stop watching but the blurry makes it hard...... you are a fantastic UA-camr please keep them coming
Great video. Could you please tell me the process to freeze your cabbage steaks and how you use them? I'm always looking for many ways to preserve. Thank you
Use a tablespoon edge to get your lids off
Peppers in the quiche!!
I cook very simple like that also, meat and 1, sometimes 2 sides.
You need a hand cart like from the grocery store to bring up your goodies. ☺️
Thank you for putting egg in your tuna salad. I have a friend from California who thought I was nuts when I did that. She said I’ve lived in several states and nobody has ever put eggs in their tuna salad. I didn’t know there is any other way!🤔
much love.
I made my Amish Friendship bread starter today.
I use a spoon to open my lids. Just have to be gentle about it so I can reuse them.
Me too
I rest a butter knife across the top of the lid and apply pressure with the can opener on top of the butter knife so you don't puncture or dent your jarring lid and lift gently. ❤
If you lay a knife on top of the lid and then use the opener to pry the lid, it won't leave a dent.
Relaxing
Hi, Rachel! I love your "what's for dinner meals." I'm in the process of looking for another stand up freezer, as the one we have has been discontinued. Can you tell me what make and CF capacity yours are? Thank you in advance.
I use my candle jars too 😆
Hi Rachel
Cute sweater!
I have an easier way to get the wax out. Put jars in the freezer and once it gets cold enough the wax will release and you can pop it right out.
Rachel since you don't use the upstairs pantry why don't you take everything there downstairs. Use that space to store your empty jars that will make your life much easier when canning
I lay a butter knife across my lid then pry off. I re-use lids so I don't want them ruined.
I'm here from Simple living Alaska
Yay, welcome!
I haven't made amish bread for years but I do remember subbing out chocolate pudding for vanilla and it was divine. (Does yours call for pudding?) I'm gluten intolerant now but sure does sound good. ps... I've heard your name being thrown around on quite a few channels this past week. You are one popular girl
