Wow, fucking awesome man. To be a part of history like this is incredible....this was 5 years before I was born, I can only imagine what this was like.
This is so Awesome, Doug Sahm, Leon Russell, Jerry Garcia! Thanks for uploading this! I could listen to this over and over, this is what music is and what it's all about! Love it!!! Miss you Doug Sahm you were the greatest!!!!!
Thanks so much for this.. I'm away from my personal archives helpin' out my folks' out for possibly a long while. So sincerely, thank you for taking the time to upload this. _Cannabis Saves Lives_ _Peace & Jah Bless_
I was at this show. Had gone down to the Dillo in mid afternoon as it was near my birthday (25th) and my brother Mike and a friend were hoping there would be music. Boy, did we ever get a treat. It was just as others have said, free announced very minimally on one radio station and mainly word of mouth. We hung around for over 9 hours, eventually shutting the place down. Just one of Austin's legendary music events that I was fortunate enough to attend and enjoy. Simply an incredible night. 🎶🍻🎹🎸😎❣🎶
This actually comprises three sets, the second set commencing with Sugarfoot Rag and the third with Searchin' -- as the tape at these junctures makes clear.
It sounds like Jerry plays pedal steel on the first two sets and electric guitar on the third. Who is the vocals on "set 2, track 5" "Those Lonely Nights > Shake A Hand"?
Actually, the third set may begin with Takes Alot To Laugh. There is a tape splice before Searchin' but it's not clear that Big Boss Man ended a set, and it is clear that they take a break after Hey Bo Diddley.
WOW can't believe I found this! My husband was there, and has told me about it many times--yes, it was spontaneous and FREE--as many of the best things are
I saw Jerry and Merle at the AWH sometime in the early to mid 70’s but cannot for the life of me remember the exact year. Best guess is 74 as that was when I met the Waco TX folks who invited me to visit TX from WI where I was in college.
Jerry played like a mad man. He was on stage almost every single day of his entire life. I am listening since 2 years and 4 months constantly about 10 to 40 hours per week to his stuff and I am not even close to know everything. It's just insane. I will spent my entire life listening. And I am so happy.
Wow! Discovering this 2 & a half hour long jam session with all these legends together! Like finding GOLD! Much love to you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is about as good as it gets and in the Deads best year may have traded my 5 and half hour July live New Jersey Dead show to have been at this one !!
WOW what a treat! awesome collaboration! piece of history preserved, thank you very much for sharing! wish there was a more comprehensive encyclopedia of all the goings on at the Armadillo. Legendary! amazing stories about this jam from the comments, thanks commenters for sharing your stories also! Love Leon, Jerry, Doug, Mary and all of the rest!
What's the story behind this show? Was it a benefit concert? It had to be scheduled months before, sandwiched between two Grateful Dead concerts in Austin & Dallas the day before & after. What a cool lineup! I don't think Jerry & Leon had too many opportunities to play shows together.
@traceling The Dead were playing in Austin the previous night, which allowed them to hook up with Doug Sahm & Leon. Aquarium Drunkard has a bit more of a writeup and a few comments from people who were there: www.aquariumdrunkard.com/2013/11/27/happy-thanksgiving-doug-sahm-and-friends-austin-tx-1972/
The kitchen from the AWHQ catered the Dead at the show at Palmer auditorium which is just across the street from the AWHQ, was, and Jerry said he had always wanted to play the Dillo so they had an impromptu thanksgiving meal and jam the next day. I think the jamming started about 3 in the afternoon with open doors. Never will any place be like Austin was in those days... geez... I miss that place and those days
I was at this show and Dead show the night before at muni auditorium. To put some context on this willie Nelson comes to Austin and has his first Picnic in Dripping Springs on July 4, 1973. Austin City Limits is a year later. Clifford Antone starts his Blues club Antones. The Vaughn Brothers come from Dallas to Austin. I’d like to hear some early shows from One Knite Soap Creek. Those where some heady days for Austin Hippies. If you were there share some memories. Before we forget. LOL Sweet Mary playing fiddle here and with Greezy Wheels was a sheer delight!
I can't believe leon Russell played fer FREE @ a little football stadium in my lil 1sq.mile,×1sq.mile twn of Conshohocken- just a few miles outside of phila. Back in early 70's my uncle said he was sellin oregano to the hippies😄lol TRUE STORY✋TO GOD✝️
They don’t make ‘em like Doug anymore. The toilet paper lsd story is GOAT level. Goddamn Elevators were in attendance and only the ex bass player/current fiddle dude makes an appearance. Don’t stop the Rok!!
Oh have to reply to that hello I’m Dougs daughter Dawn. Dad loved to freak people out and bring surprises to the show’s. Bob Dylan etc.. I have pictures of myself and my little brother back stage i was 12 and I don’t recall who took the picture but I can tell I was in one of moods. Tired sleepy because as kids we grew up definitely different. But tell you the truth dad loved a lot of real people stars to soulful person soulful people. Dad loved all walks of life and he could smell a fake 50 miles away. He was the real deal. Guess that’s why he wrote BE REAL.
Douglass " SHE's ABOUT A MOVER " Sahm , did an album around the same time . Some guy named BOB DYLAN dropped by to add some harmonica riffs . Yep he knew everybody ...
I was there in 72. Jerry Garcia and Leon Russell came and sat down with me a bud and drank a beer. Never forget that nite. Two nice guys...

Never ceases to amaze me how much live stuff Jerry was able to fit in between the Dead & solo gigs. This is so cool!
so very true the next year was Old and in the Way in the mix
I saw Jerry and Merle at the AWH sometime in the early to mid 70’s but cannot for the life of me remember the exact year. Best guess is 74 as that was when I met the Waco TX folks who invited me to visit TX from WI where I was in college.
Jerry lived and breathed music.
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Chapter by Chapter / Verse by Verse !!!!!!! Amen

There's actually 3 drummers. Jerry Barnett played the first set. Tony Lair played after, then Jim Finney.

I love everything Leon does! What a talent he is! Playing for the angles now!
Gotta love Leon’s musicianship, but he was an asshole for ruining Joe Cocker with heroin.

Oddly enough, nobody on that stage had any weed that day.
That is more than odd! lol.

Hard to believe there was a day that Doug didn’t have any weed
I was there! I'm 72 now.
Unusual that "superstars" together üplay outstanding. But this is fantastic. Blues country rock at its best. My day is saved
