Magical interplay between two masters.Benny finally met his equal in Mel Powell. Why there isn't more film of this genius will always be a mystery to me.I don't recall ever seeing Benny have such a ball as on this clip. For my money Benny's greatest musical partner!
Benny try's to slow Mel down on Avalon but his splendid exuberance zooms to the fore regardless.Pure magic!
    Beyond wonderful!!!!

The world's greatest jazz pianist no one has ever heard of. Still, he made a hell of a career for himself in classical music, winning the Pulitzer prize for composition with his double piano concerto "Duplicates for two pianos and orchestra" in 1990.

I was lucky enough to this when it this episode of the Merv Griffin show was broadcast. It's Merv's voice asking for more in between songs. A great show also with vocals, old war stories, and a great Sing, Sing, Sing to wind it up. BG was flyin'.

Mel must have been practicing these 20 years. Benny wasn't ready to play Avalon at the tempo Mel started it, so Mel slowed it down a bit only to speed it up again so Benny couldn't keep up.
    Great fun!

I was 12 back at those days. Wouldn't have appreciated that kind of music, as I do now.

Teddy Wilson and Mel Powell and just about every other pianist it seems all had one thing in common, they all were influenced by Art Tatum, and every one of them could reach all the tenths.

Yes - he moved into classical music later in his career as well as composing. He'd dabbled in other genres all of his life, see the jazz/classical concerto "Pearls on Velvet" which IIRC he wrote at age *20.*
