First time ever playing with garagebend (Doing this for living since 30 years)...and..something very nice came out of this. And YOU, Sir, are my Hero for today. Greetz from Germany!
I'm beginner at Garageband and also starting play guitar, so you just saved my life with this tip to export file from Garageband. Now I could open it at Audacity. Thanks pal.
You are the most awesome guy on the internet ever. Thank you so much! You saved me from hours of headaches and bucketloads of tears. More power to you, Pete!
Pete, you're such a life saver. I had to learn this on the spot because of this local big timer wanted me to send the parts to help our band mix with better quality.
@@thevisiblehand5439 There is absolutely no excuse for this, except maybe that the generally abysmal horror of file management in IOS doesn't even allow a user friendly smart process. But even then they could have cut a few extra steps. After all it's not the only counter intuitive way to do things in the Garageband interface.
Really annoying, I think Apple shoot themselves in the foot by deliberately making stuff incompatible. It seems obvious that people will use their pads as a portable studio but then want to export the files to a fully configured DAW for mixing/editing. I bought an iPad because I read how good GarageBand was on it........ very disappointed with it. So, off to get Audioshare and another level of complexity.
Exporting some tracks in BandLab on an old GarageBand project. Video was still helpful. Interesting note. The bug was fixed for saving files when exporting to GarageBand songs. Thanks for the gift that keeps on giving Pete!
Thanks for this! I create music on my ipad air 2 since 2015 including recording using a legit professional interface. I really find it hard to make music on the mac or pc. Most of my clients demand these stems so this was really helpful thanks again!
I had a much simpler problem and you handled it in the first few minutes. Liked and subscribed so when i get in deeper you'll be nearby to save me again. Thank you so much, sir. Helped my evening out bigtime.
Thank you for this great tutorial - and also about adding the work-around with the "Open in..." bug! That was driving me crazy until you showed that piece! Many thanks!
That’s really neat and I’m glad you learned what you needed to; but just for the sake of learning, mastering doesn’t require stems; in fact most mastering engineers only want your bounced WAV file in 24b 48k formatting and they can then load up pro tools, or their daw of choice and master the track. Stems, is more of a method of mixing.
Pete, it’s like you already know and understand my musical needs. You have advanced knowledge that is so impressive, and yet you seem to know the way us learners and basic recording guys seem to think. Out of everyone I’ve studied, you are always the dude I come back to. Well done, man. You just have it, and I appreciate this so very much. Warm regards, Humblehombre.
@@PeteJohnsMusic well then success. You’ve done extremely well. You have inspired me to do much better work in my music. My head is always cluttered with parts, and thoughts of music. I get apple not wanting to work with windows, but it is a pain in the ass just to export stems when it's standard option in most DAWs. Thank you for the tut
Excellent video. I wanted to export tracks out of GarageBand and import as samples into Koala via AudioShare, but was getting strange results. The sound of my AUv3 synth changed in the song export for some reason and merging in GarageBand fixed it. I learned a couple things from this video. Thanks!

I usually end up exporting track by track solos via email, then import to my tascam dp24. I don’t use a daw. Time consuming, so I try to limit it to the basic rhythm tracks that define the length and structure of a tune. Once I get in too deep on a garage band project its too much trouble to export and I stick with it.
Hi Pete, I am a bit ancient but I learn a lot from your tutorials. One thing bugs me is the version I use is 10.4.2 and everything you show in your videos is completely different to what I see...
You’re likely using GarageBand Mac which has some similarities but it quite different. Check out my mate Patrick over at the GarageBand Guide for more Mac stuff.
Can’t see any way to do this other than how you put it here, but as you well know Pete, it’s a heck of a juxtaposition, to consider this process, up against Cubasis. I mean, I dunno the overall process, but a key part of this, was to convert any MIDI or drummer parts into audio waveform tracks/channels. And, as I pottered my way through this workaround, I thought ‘blimey, in Cubasis I’d just hit ‘freeze’ and with one click and a second or two passing, it’d be done.’ !

Great video, Pete! Just subed! I wanted to ask you: I already made a song on GarageBand, but my GarageBand App has by default 16 bit enabled, I want to upload it to Spotify (I already got a distributor) so, my quesiton is, do I have to turn it into 24 bit for Spotify? What happens if I upload it in 16 bit? Will Spotify compress it and would it sound bad? I don’t really know much about this, and as you actually know about all this, I would like to hear an answer from you :) thanks in advance, Pete!
Great video. Can you export a sample from the Sampler. They are in my Library but it doesn’t seem you can access those samples outside of Garage Band. Thanks.
Wow. Just wow. I recently started to use an Ipad "Pro" and just got into Garageband. Came here because I couldn't figure out how to export and thought that surely I must have some sort of brain freeze and I'm just missing something very obvious, only to find out, it really isn't me, but the insanity of IOS and Garageband. Same as pretty much all of the file management on IOS. Absolutely unbelievable how the complete myth of everything Mac being so user friendly and intuitive is still alive. This is like someone sat down and tried to figure out how to make it most complicated and painful to export stems and most importantly involve as many clicks as possible to execute what could be a very simple task. It's not just " not so great", or "could be better" in terms of usability and UX. It is mindbogglingly bad and would be laughable if it wasn't so sad. Regardless though, thanks a lot for the video.
Yup. I’m not going to SEONN any time defending Apple for the way their file management works. It is lacking. But unfortunately Android just doesn’t cut it for audio recording at all.
I think GB IOS is totally workable as a professional aside of not having a mass export. I'm currently doing a session for somebody and have 24 guitar tracks to individually export 😅
Hi Pete, love your work, simple tips for tricky issues taught with great enthusiasm and energy 🙏⚡️ I have an issue I’m trying to solve, hoping you can shed some light? I’m currently working on a project in GarageBand for iPad, that has around 20 sections. I’d like to export only section “P”, but can’t seem to find a way to do so without GarageBand exporting all 20 sections as a single file. 😩 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again Pete!
Yeah, so not a simple way to do it sorry. My advice is to duplicate your project, then delete all other sections. The bud should leave you with just the section you want and you can export. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Hey Pete I have a question on the interface video you did for the connection to the iPad, I know you used the focusrite 2i2 but can I use the same parts as you used in the 2i2 with the solo? The parts you used to connect were the usb to lighting adapter and the usb 3.0 hub
Hi Pete, thanks for all the videos ,I learned a lot by watching 🤘🏼😉 I got a very important question for you, I ve looked everywhere but I can’t seem to find the answer.. How can I export stems in MONO without having to open a GarageBand project on the Mac ? Is there a way to do it on the iPad? By following your instructions all the WAVs are in Stereo....Is there a way to choose the export format? Thanks in advance, Socratis
Hey there. GarageBand iOS can only export stereo WAV files unfortunately. You would need to use something like AudioShare to convert them to mono if you need mono. ua-cam.com/video/nQXeCDU5FTg/v-deo.html
This was very helpful. I was wondering if there's a way to record di guitar tracks on ipad without going through the amp sims. I'd like to rely on external hardware for my tone but still go di through my irig
Hey there. Yes, you can play through your outbound gear and use clean audio track. This will help. ua-cam.com/video/NGASmnMj9-U/v-deo.htmlsi=se3Y63YJzea3L-l1
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you! It's odd to me that they don't give you the option to record di without the amp sims. If I used an ir pedal the garageband sim would meddle with it, I think
I’ve used GarageBand on my iMac to record and exchange tracks with musicians from a distance and I’ve gotten to a high level. I’m thinking about migrating my work flow to a new iPad Air with the m1 chip. Can I get to the point where I’m able to ditch the desktop computer?
Hey Gil. So, I used my iPad for probably 90% of my music production. And a lot of the time I'm using my Mac instead is to learn and test out other apps and plugins. If I wasn't doing this channel, I think I'd be 100% iOS.
I believe so? It definitely is in Logic Pro but not sure about GarageBand Mac. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
A friend was sending all his GB songs as .M4a files and they worked great in GB. But he recently sent me a song as an .mp3. The MP3 would not change speed as I changed the tempo in GB, but the .m4a files were following whatever tempo I set in GB. Which led to the question. What BPM was the original recorded at? I asked him to start including BPM in the filenames.
Hey Pete are you on Instagram? You’re the only guy who’s helping me I just wanted to follow you I saw your about page but it didn’t show your Instagram
Hey there. It really depends on what you’re planning to do with the tracks. If you’re bringing in to a DAW with more mixing options you may want to leave them dry and do all your mixing in the other DAW.
Hello Sir, I have 22 tracks of a song in GarageBand, how to convert all number of tracks in each wave file, instead of converting a single wave file for each track,it is taking time, help me out ❤

Hey there. Converting to 24-bit won’t change anything and isn’t necessary. 16-bit is CD quality and should be fine. 👍
Pete Johns Thank you so much for your answer, Pete!!! I’m gonna stick with 16 then! Keep it up, bro! :)
Thanks for this. Has GarageBand smoothed the export of stems since this video two years later?
Alas, no. It’s still just as painful. 😕
My hero.
Welcome Dave. 🤘
Awesome Pete 👍
👍😎🙏
Great video. Can you export a sample from the Sampler. They are in my Library but it doesn’t seem you can access those samples outside of Garage Band. Thanks.
You would need to place the sample in a project and then export as a WAV file.
love this - thank you

Wow.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Unfortunately, both is true.
Very helpful!

I think GB IOS is totally workable as a professional aside of not having a mass export. I'm currently doing a session for somebody and have 24 guitar tracks to individually export 😅
Yup. I would have to agree with you on this one!
@@PeteJohnsMusic do you know of any IOS DAWS that can export stems?
Hi Pete, love your work, simple tips for tricky issues taught with great enthusiasm and energy 🙏⚡️
I have an issue I’m trying to solve, hoping you can shed some light? I’m currently working on a project in GarageBand for iPad, that has around 20 sections.
I’d like to export only section “P”, but can’t seem to find a way to do so without GarageBand exporting all 20 sections as a single file. 😩
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again Pete!
Yeah, so not a simple way to do it sorry. My advice is to duplicate your project, then delete all other sections. The bud should leave you with just the section you want and you can export. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Ah, unfortunately feared as much. Thanks for taking the time to reply, looking forward to your future videos. Cheers 🙏

@@PeteJohnsMusic yes sir!I just did!!!
Hey Pete I have a question on the interface video you did for the connection to the iPad, I know you used the focusrite 2i2 but can I use the same parts as you used in the 2i2 with the solo?
The parts you used to connect were the usb to lighting adapter and the usb 3.0 hub
Yup, as long as you use the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter the Scarlett Solo will also work just fine.
Pete Johns okay thank you very much
Yeah! That’s why that I’m making My singing monsters ideas

Hey Pete, is there a way to import into GarageBand, I have stems I would like to put in GarageBand but just making sure if I can do it?
Yup, 100%. ua-cam.com/video/9NwsiCVAh3U/v-deo.html

Looking like there is no way to export MIDI from iPad Garageband?
Alas…. No. (Not yet?)
Is this possible to export seperate tracks on a MacBook? Thank you!
I believe so? It definitely is in Logic Pro but not sure about GarageBand Mac. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
Thanks.

Hey Pete, does the app from the second method change (normalize) the quality of the audio?
It doesn’t, so is better if you want to try to maintain a lower gain level on your tracks.
Yeah knowing the BPM is definitely keyboard. If you need to change it you can use something like this - ua-cam.com/video/VbEzhygQqgw/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you! Very, very useful.

Hello, just a question. Is it best to mix the tracks before exporting, or smarter to mix them after you import the new wav files?
Hey there. It really depends on what you’re planning to do with the tracks. If you’re bringing in to a DAW with more mixing options you may want to leave them dry and do all your mixing in the other DAW.
Is any way to export individual loop as audio file from GB to file system?
Add to GarageBand, solo, export. No other way to access the files individually.
Hello Sir, I have 22 tracks of a song in GarageBand, how to convert all number of tracks in each wave file, instead of converting a single wave file for each track,it is taking time, help me out ❤
Not possible I’m afraid.
