That's the first time I've heard the claim that Katic was /fired/. The phrase 'asked not to return' is //not// the same as being fired, which would be in effect /told/ not to return. The whole franchise revolves around Beckett and Castle's relationship, so killing Beckett off fatally undermines that. Also the future references to her being married to Castle with kids make absolutely no sense if she's supposedly dead. Unless of course the claim is she was killed years later. It doesn't hold water either that Laney her //best// friend wouldn't have been involved in investigating her death, and yet Tamala Jones (and Penny Johnson Gerrald) was also dropped. It all smells very much like the production team already knew season nine was cancelled and couldn't be bothered to put together a reasonable treatment to try and rescue it. If the argument was money then frankly I'd argue drop Fillion to save his wages and get Beckett to investigate /his/ death.* That's far more believable given the resources / favours she could call on. Hell even Bracken might be useful somehow. * Edit: Actually if Fillion was dropped you'd lose his wage - probably more than Katic - /plus/ those of Castle's mother and daughter who wouldn't be needed in future episodes. Dropping Jones and Johnson Gerrald is stupid as their characters would have to be replaced - you'd always need and ME and precinct Captain, whereas you wouldn't need a mother and daughter. Actually more than that, you could scrap the entire cast and set for Castle's detective agency.
better than what they were going to do honestly. a S9 without becket would not have been satisfying. Sure it was a bit of a jarring ending, but at least it was an ending.
The basic problem was the show (despite its title) was really Castle&Beckett and people tuned in to see THEM. Since Fillion and Katic didn't get along, they kept finding ways to avoid Rick & Kate being together. People wanted to see Rick & Kate interacting, they kept losing viewers. Apparently the network understood this. Killing off Kate would have killed the show anyway, so they chose not to renew it. Honestly, the episode "Hollander's Woods" (end of season 7) would have been the better final episode.
completely agree. they also shouldn’t have done the missing months subplot in my opinion. they shouldn’t have had the cliffhanger at the end of season 6 and had the premiere of season 7 be their wedding
After she left there just wasn’t a show. At least if she had been killed off I’d have not watched it. I’m not a Nathan Fillion fan. I don’t think he is one bit as cute as he thinks he is.
In my opinion the main problem was that they made it too serious. The first few seasons had a light tone. From when Castle went missing it took a nose dive.
I totally agree! I liked the light hearted feel of the show in the first couple of seasons. I didn't mind it being serious here and there, but not so much. And I felt the show "jumped the shark" when Castle was kidnapped on his wedding day. I really hated that whole story line. I would have continued watching if they would've killed Beckett off and had the crew go after her killer.
I partially agree, I think Nathan Fillion continued to understand the assignment. He continued to play the child like adult with a hyper active imagination, but Stana Katic wanted more of a serious dramatic role. All this being said Season 8 was a bit rubbish, and I am not sure the show would have worked without both Becket and Castle.
I took the ending of season 8 and tacked it on to the end of season 7. When Castle gets the award and they get a murder and walk away I put the ending there. It blends well enough as it is the same music. I watched season 8 once but never again.
Both are awesome but it seems in retrospect that The Mentalist managed to hold off the romance between the stars until the very end, which is something in fact few tv shows can do right.
" A writer and his muse, fighting crimes" Killing Beckett would be the worst decision ever. Good thing they cancelled the show. Not because it was titled after Castle doesn't mean the show was all about Richard Castle. Kate Beckett was a strong female character lead and not just that, Stana Katic was fantastic and slayed her role as a Detective. I must say that despite the rumors about them not being good terms behind the camera, Nathan and Stana had the best chemistry ever. They got everything and Caskett were one of the best slow burn romance. ❤
Well it would have been up to the showrunners to make that work. Shows can remain successfull after changing direction and elements of the main cast. It's a risky move for sure but it's been done before sucessfully. No point wondering about what-ifs though. The show got the axe and that's that, it had a good run and ended on a satisfactory note.
Nathan was the star,so he had a lot of input , I believe the rumors, that Nathan was a jerk, who was jealous of his co star. There are just too many . He is now a star of the rookie ,and he has a say in the writing, they busted up,a couple ,who were popular, But,they kept, him, wth a girl ,most don’t like.
I only found Castle recently through Hulu. As an author myself, I expected to gravitate towards Nathon's character but Stana absolutely blew me away. Talented actress and a compelling character. Castle without Beckett would've been horrible. I'm actually glad it got cancelled rather than see that happen.
I knew it! Thank you for confirming the timeline. Marlowe was the glue. Both actors would listen to him and continue to function as long as he was there. However, after two years of babysitting (the story is the problems emerged after season four and Stana's raise, which she deserved) Marlowe didn't like how the show was going and decided to leave. That's when the show fell apart. Significant portions of seasons 7&8 are with the leads being separated, pursuing their own plots and not including the other "for their own safety". B.S. This when the leaks of infighting happened. It was obvious that something had happened because the chemistry wasn't there anymore. Season 9 was a blatant attempt to resurrect something from this disaster, but without Beckett, Lani, and most of the precinct, it would have flopped. I'm glad they pulled the plug instead.
It was hard to imagine the stars did not get along as their screen time did not indicate that! Total professionalism on both of their parts, but I have to say, Beckett rocked! It was a great show and I hope I get to see her in other projects. She is a professional - even when getting the ax.
And the rumors probably aren’t even true. It was some tabloid article that posted this without any actual credibility, that other tabloid articles essentially reposted.
@@alechamilton1864 The really weird thing is that everyone else He has worked with loves him and from what little we know he did not even know they had not been offered contracts.
@@alechamilton1864this. People are so freaking quick to blame NF as an asshole and that they have this huge problem together but I just don’t see it. There is no proof.
Andrew Marlowe was the glue that held the show together. The show went down hill after he left. I remember Marlowe tweeted his disappointment when Stana was fired. They shouldn't have done a season 8 (there were a few good episodes there), the "missing time", "locksat", "P.I." plot was so dumb and it was so clear that they wanted to reduce Caskett scenes. Even though season 7 wasn't the best, it was good enough for the series finale. Hollander's Woods was an excellent finale.
I agree. Hollander's woods left things open for beckett. Whether she'd become captain, senator, or something else. But then we as fans could've believe their relationship would be about the same instead of introducing Hailey
I liked season 7 because while it wasn't great, it was the season where 1) they got married, 2) they got closure with the 3XK thread, and 3) career-wise, both Castle and Beckett were in good places--with him receiving a Career Achievement Award and her on the verge of her next career move. I honestly think one of season 8's problems was with Beckett being a captain instead of a detective.
One correction, Castle did not get a job as a PI to fulfill anything. He started the PI business because he was kicked out of the NYPD for his mob connections. He went the PI route so he could still find a way to be around the murders Kate would be at.
I think they meant that it was a way for writers to begin giving Castle his own space outside the precinct. It did clearly play into whatever grand scheme the writers had, if indeed they had ambition to kill off Kate.
@@lolo-vj8xr that may be true, but it doesn't have anything to do with actual character motivations, which is what they were referring to. Castle did not become a PI because he wanted to, he did it when kicked out of the precinct as a way to stay close to the precinct and Kate.
@@billnolte8644 Oh I agree on that. I was even willing to go with it because it was rather in character. The point in the video was made very awkwardly.
I just finished my rewatch of this show, it's my favorite show by far and I rewatch it at least once a year. And it still upsets me that they chose to cancel the show. Even more so that they fired Stana without so much as an explanation. It was one of the best shows on TV and it's my comfort show.
Yeah It's a bit disappointing to see such a good series end but I'm glad that it ended at this point and didn't keep on dragging with seasons that would've been horrible. At least it ended on a high note.
And shocked that they just wanted to kill her off, like her character didn't deserved to be happy at the end. That "7 years later" scene felt rushed and out of place. But it's better for me to know her character ended up being happy at the end instead of just being killed off for a plot device for Castle to get revenge.
The show started as Castle but it became more Beckett than Castle and it was hard for some people, well for Nathan for sure. So, they wanted to keep up in the next season, but without Beckett. We, fans, spoke and we said what we have to say. Social networks were in fire after the news, so the people behind the scenes decided to quit the show. Sad, but good. Who would watch it without Beckett!?
Watched the ending recently. While I think they should have stopped at 7, I came up with a “head-canon” interpretation for the ending. Basically, the voice-over implied that Castle and Becket got together after the first episode, and all the episodes since then have been in Castle’s novels
Honestly I don’t see it that way. Was just something to show that they survived and lived a normal life and had kids. Given the fact that they didn’t know whether or not they’d return, they opted to plan for the show continuing after season 8 and had planned to kill off Beckett, but then the network decided to cancel so they had added the flash forward after the scene of them getting shot. While it was a half assed attempt, it was really all they could do because they didn’t plan properly and didn’t end up having enough time to rework the ending completely
@@alechamilton1864 Exactly as I saw it. It is not that hard to interpret and the fact people need the ending explained to them probably means them same people draw with crayons.
Fillion's own manager admitted that his client, " loathed Katic " and " told the network that " either she goes or he ( Nathan ) would quit ". The show's cancelation made his threat academic
I actually had heard that Nathan Fillion was upset by the unceremonious firing of Stana Katic and unhappy with the new direction the network wanted to take the show, and that's why it ended up being cancelled. I'm glad the show ended when it did before it was totally ruined. To completely change the direction of the show the way the new showrunners wanted would have killed it anyway.
@@nvadqsthere’s no evidence to suggest that those rumors of them despising each other were true either, actually even less evidence that Nathan practically bullied her on set.
@@nvadqsthere has been no consensus that they actually hated each other, these quotes they keep pulling are anonymous and probably some Muppet on set wanting to feel important.
Ya Andrew Marlo was the best writer for castle 100%, one of the main thing I have learnt from the caskett relationship is that you should fight for what you love. They have had their ups and downs even when they weren’t dating, their relationship as a whole proves that if you care enough you will get through it. If they didn’t have a happy ending I wouldn’t have wanted to watch the show. I believe the new writers fucked up the show it could’ve went on for way more than 8 series if Andrew was still there.
So glad they realized the show wouldn’t work with Beckett and cancelled instead. While the end was rushed, I’m not upset with it. I mean they really did answer pretty much all the questions.
yeaaaah i am still pissed at it. Chuck (and House MD) being my all-time favourite series, despite whatever was season 5... had an abysmal ending. It was a comedy.... Comedies must have happy endings.... If it was not a comedy that would have been a great ending for Chuck.
Castle was one of my favorite shows. I loved the whole cast. I did like the ending because I always wanted Castle and Beckett to stay together and have a family. However, I did not like season 8 at all. Since the show kept them separated throughout season 8, it ultimately lost its Castle and Beckett magic!
I call BS on the whole "Fillion and Katic didn't get along" crap. Here's several reasons why: 1. Nearly every cast member from Serenity appeared at one time or another on Castle. This tells me he's very personable and generous. 2. They seemed as close as a brother and sister. Sure, they're gonna fight sometimes. And maybe even one or both ends up in tears. But this being the norm? I don't think so. 3. Look at the outtakes/bloopers from that time period. They seem to be having fun. -- Blame for the show's downfall can be squarely placed upon the writers. It started with Castle being abducted for 3+ months (I think it was) on the day they were supposed to marry. They never explained that or even dealt with it that much. The Beckett's Mother storyline was over. They should have let that end. And the final season was the absolute worst.
Disagree about the writers. The show runner dictates the story arcs for the season. The writers flesh out those paths. So if he wanted them kept apart the writers made that happen
I'll point out that Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Arye Gross, and Toks Olagundoye along with other recurring actors have all appeared on The Rookie, but there's never even been a rumor of Stana.
@@HariSeldon913there's plenty of possible reasons for that. Maybe she didn't get the offer, maybe she didn't want to, maybe her real life husband was jealous (about Nathan Fillion), maybe Nathan was jealous, maybe maybe maybe... A lot of "maybe's" out there Speculating about it is pointless
@@HariSeldon913Stana is on a show that shoots in Bulgaria the rookie shoots in LA that’s quite a way for a guest spot, that’s a logical reason IF she was even asked
Believe it or not I am still hooked on watching the old reruns of the show!! Season 1 through 6 was the best on Castle. 7 and 8 didn't really do anything for me. It's obvious they didn't care about the fans in the end. The crappy ending they did, sucked. I'm still glad they both survived. I don't understand why Nathan Stana didn't get along if that is really the case? When the Paley Center had Castle Crew on..they seem like they all got along really really well special Stana and Nathan. Andrew Marlow leaving the show had a lot to do with its failure!!!
Season 8 was truly horrendous, but season 7 was almost as bad. That moronic, "Only you, a writer, can save the world," plot around his disappearance before the wedding had to be the product of sleep-deprivation induced brain damage or heavy use of illicit substances.
It was not "Only you, a writer ..." it was actually "Only you, my former college acquaintance, and one of the few that are too famous to be quietly terminated id the spy mission goes astray"
The entire basis of the story was CASTLE telling BECKETTS story through HIS eyes. Without her there is NO SHOW!!! It’s obvious that Marlowe was the driving force behind the storied people wanted and once he left, so did that story arc
Castle was one of my favorite series ever, somewhat tempered now after finding out what kind of a tool Nathan Fillion was in his treatment of Stana Katic. The last season with the P.I. business and all of the Locksat convolutions was rather forced, but I stuck with it. But I can state categorically and without any hesitation or doubt, that I and a large percentage of the viewers/fans would have dropped a Castle series without Stana Katic like a hot rock. Just playing the titular character did not make Natan the star. The star was the duo Castle and Beckett paired with an OUTSTANDING supporting cast: Molly, Susan, Seamus, and Jon!
"Found out" from the National Enquirer? It's really interesting that in all the other ensemble shows he's been involved in, no one else has claimed he treated them poorly or was selfish about screen time, and in fact by all appearances it seems that he still has great relationships with many of his previous co-stars who have done guest roles on Rookie.
Don’t believe the rumors of the Stana Nathan feud. I guarantee you that they don’t absolutely despise each other. Especially the one where it states that Nathan bullied her. All these came from some tabloid article claiming to have an inside source from the show but never had any actual evidence and was all just unsubstantiated rumor that was copied by other articles. Also not to mention the fact that this tabloid has been known to lie before.
I keep on returning to watch Castle every month, sometimes just a few episodes, sometimes the 1st season, others, the whole show, it gave me some peace after the loss of my wife, their love was like ours, a hard start, a fulfilled live together and, like the end of a show, her passing. I cry a lot.
I originally thought the series was a Middle Ages drama. I saw an episode one night. Afterwards I went to a bookstore to get all the Castle books, and the show became my favorite. Without Becket there would be no Castle magic. I still hope for a reunion
I actually remember the end of the last episode. Fast forward a few years later they were married with 3? kids, having breakfast. A wonderful happy ending, since unfortunately there had to be an ending.
I agree! I loved the ending. Would not have continued to watch without Kate OR Lainie. I've read so many conflicting points re: Stana & Nathan's real life relationship. Who really knows what happened? Their on screen chemistry was off the charts. And I really, really, REALLY hope Nathan was not a prima donna as has been reported. But I take those rumors with a grain of salt & choose to live in my own little bubble where everyone got along. ❤
I never watched Castle until two weeks ago. So I am new to this but the point of the show was Castle and Beckett falling in love with the murder and mystery as a back drop. There are shows that can survive a main characters departure but not this one. So often shows think the men's characters are the ones people watch for... When it's the two of them, their connection... I can't say if these two actors despised one another or not but they had amazing chemistry on screen and both made the show. Removing either of them would have been the end. Considering the choices they had made in season 7 & 8. I think the time jump gave the viewer and the show the best ending possible. Doing season 9 would have been the equivalent of a "but" in the middle of a sentence. It would wipe out the point of everything said and done previously. I disagree with the commentary of the video, the ending was not fully satisfying, true. However, one of the main themes between Castle and Beckett was Castle always trying to get Beckett to see the magic in life. This ending, shows he finally succeeded. They found their magic together in their family, another stable of Castle's.
This was one of the best shows ever. I watched all 8 seasons a few times already. That being said... it was probably the best move to cancel the show if they wanted to Kate out of the show cause I think fans would've stopped watching.
I love this series, specially the moments or the scenes that Stana ( Becked) had this little subtle nuance expression and the camera was able to catch them... I don't know if you guys notice it but it was a great show
I'm so glad they didn't do the 9th season. Beckett is the star of the show, no Castle without her. It's awful and a shame they fired Stana and really thought about killing her character off.
To be honest, when production decides to make such a massive change, they probably just should cancel the show. And although Fillion was the bigger star, Katic delivered IMHO the better performance over the whole series. Beckett had more ups and downs, Becket hat the major long term plot lines. Castles story lines were often more artificial. I think they worked good as a couple and the fans deserve to believe in the happy end. To kill a character off is quite rude towards the fans.
This show never would’ve made it without Katic. Fillion is an amazing actor but let’s face it, the chemistry between the 2 is what made the show. Molly Quinn is beautiful but Stana Katic is a once in a lifetime beauty. It’s too bad that they couldn’t put aside their differences for the sake of the show and the fans. The show, just like most series became too serious. Fans want to escape serious. Life is too serious.
I remember when I read that they fired Stana and Tamala. As much as I loved (and love) the show, it was going to be over for me. There was no way I could watch Castle without Stana, there was just no way. I'd like to think this wasnt something about egos but...who knows. So for me, I was grateful and sad about the show being cancelled. Anyway, its still my favorite show ever and it will always make me happy!!!
The wings fell off when Marlowe left...The rest of it was a graceful glide right into the ground...Now Castle is the world's oldest rookie police officer..
Castle is still one of my favorite shows and Stana is one of my favorite actresses. I do feel although there were some good stand-alone episodes that I liked in seasons 7 and 8, the ending of season 6 was perfect. It didn't make a whole lot of sense with the whole Loksat storyline. How did Castle go from helping his friend to finding out that Senator Bracken was working for someone else? No disrespect to Kristopher Pollaha because he's a good actor but that also didn't make sense at the end of the last episode. The epilogue felt tacked on because the fans didn't want the show to continue without Stana and Tamala. Nathan Fillion was so dismissive of her leaving the show. Stana Katic was the heart of the show even though where it was a partnership. Once the producers knew the show was ending the network I suspect gave him a deal for his own show "The Rookie" where he is the lead.
the ending was horrible. Infact the whole 8 Season was horrible. I just hope that these two come together again and create magic onscreen. Castle and Beckett was the most loveable and powerful onscreen couple. Andrew Marlowe sir please make that happen again and give us back CASTLE show
Worst decision the network ever made was to fire Stana. Best decision they could have made after that was to just cancel the show all together. The show was called Castle but it was always their love story. It lived on their chemistry and journey as partners and then lovers. The fact that the new showrunners ever thought for a second they could save a buck by FIRING ONE OF THEIR STARS was proof they were just hacks who didn't get the show or its fans. Unfortunately this was a very common idea at the time. So many other showrunners of the 2010s thought their shows could be carried by the male costar alone when in reality, it would never work. Sleepy Hollow comes to mind.
@@Fakeaorta from what I understand it was mostly due to Fillion's ego and how hyper critical he was of Stana's acting. He would break her down and she would spend a lot of time off screen crying in her trailer. And most of the executive's didn't really care or were on Fillion's side bc he was the main character, not Stana. She didn't have equal footing, or any footing apparently. And was mostly there just to look pretty and make him look good. I heard most of this from an obscure article, where one of her assistants spoke out and said how domineering Fillion was and how she would hear Stana crying in her trailer after shootings. The assistant didn't paint a pretty picture of Fillion at all. And I think the small article came out during or after season 4, but the assistant had said the problems started right from the beginning and just got worse for Stana. I love the show I Have watched it multiple times upon rewatch especially, you can see how well-written and intriguing it is. Yes, you can tell that they changed hands for season 7/8 since even the lighting of the scenes became a lot darker. When a show changes hands. like that it will make a difference however the true magic of the show wasn't just a romance it was good writing and two people being each other as partner and person, that's what we all tuned into the watch every week especially because that's something that is all too rare to find in real life... the fact that the new showrunner did not understand that is beyond me, killing off Beckett is unthinkable since it doesn't even make sense how could they even go ahead with that? yes you are right fans would not stand for it I guess we should be thankful a season 9 without Kate never saw the light of day. That doesn't mean we didn't get robbed of a satisfying ending the only thing worse than a good show ending is an ending that is obviously an afterthought and so unsatisfying... All these years later still not over it. ( an ending like season 7 would have been 100000 times more satisfying than what we ended up with.) If they were not so focused on making the centered around Castle they could have focused on making the story stronger with Locksat I mean they spent 6 seasons concentrating on taking Beckett's mother's murderer down, it was so interesting to watch they couldn't have spent more than one rushed season which they chose to spend pulling Rick and Kate apart to take down Locksat some excellent writing I am sure could have come from that not to mention viewers would have loved watching Castle and Beckett figure out married life and the questions that arise from that dynamic instead all we got was them being apart most of that time. We can never know if the Nathan and the Stana Katic rumors are faithful one thing is for sure though they both cared about their characters and the show and no matter what may have been going on between them they both acted professionally. I am sure Katic would have wanted to continue especially having been given the opportunity to play such a strong female lead that, meant so much to people we can blame the writers for not thinking and the network for not realizing the show's significance to fans and more impartially Stana's GREAT significance not to mention her talent and skills as an actress...
As a Castle fan I was never happy with "Caskett''s" actual wedding. Season 7 Episode 6 - The Times Of Our Lives - because nobody (apart from Beckett) from the 12th Precinct was in attendance. Just their immediate families🙁Esposito, Ryan, and Lanie should have been there too. These three characters were the glue that helped to make Castle the success it was. To leave them out of the ceremony was a disgrace in my opinion.
While I am happy with the ending we did get, I think that the better "spinoff" show (as opposed to Castle continuing sans Beckett), would've been to turn it into Beckett, a more procedural version of the show and in her spare time SHE tries to find HIS killer. Symmetry as the show began with Kate looking for her mom's killer. Also, based on reports, I can't root for ANYTHING Fillion anymore. To not get his choice of actress to play Beckett and treat Stana so sh!++!ly is selfish, cruel and downright childish. That's what fillion was; he was a petulant child. "Wah! I can't have my way. So I'll make her so miserable, she'll quit. Then I'll get my way. Wah!"
Sounds like he “boohoo”ed as Beckett became the most loved character. Seems very unprofessional. Without her character there was no show! If they wanted to write a “Nathan Fillion PI” show they should’ve ended in season 7, then done a different show.
If he really behaved that way, I completely agree. My only caveat is with all these rumors, even though no one's denied it, people from Fillion's past have come back to work with him again - guests from Firefly came on Castle, Castle alums have been on The Rookie. I just can't reconcile that with the idea of him being some terror or bully on set. I mean, I wasn't there, so it could be absolutely true, I'm just sharing my reasons for my hesitation.
Yeah, I don't know about that. When you hear about actors behaving "out of character" off set, I try to figure out why that happened. While I don't disagree that Nathan handled things badly, it takes two to rumble. If he had such a problem with her, he should left the show, but nobody went anywhere because they were making too much money. When they started the show, Nathan was the experienced one. Stana had never done a long-running series before and looked to Nathan for guidance. Nathan loved that, I'm guessing. It feeds his ego. But as the show goes on, and especially after she re-negotiates her salary, she doesn't appreciate his input. In fact, she starts letting him know that she's bothered by this unsolicited advice. Probably by snide remarks under her breath. This pisses him off because she needed him so much at the beginning. (And even if she didn't, this is from his perspective, so she did) so he starts chipping away at her, giving her notes, taking umbrage at her responses. This leads her to feel attacked and she gets defensive, perhaps returning in kind. I've never had a working relationship deteriorate so I don't know if this is what happened or not. Once the producers saw what was happening, they apparently tried to get them into therapy to work things out but it didn't take. And you can see why. The producers don't care if Nathan and Stana like each other or not. They just want Castle and Beckett to appear in love. So it's not REAL therapy, it's character therapy, like when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are in therapy in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. If neither party believes it is because of their behavior and solely the other's fault, therapy is a waste of time. In fact, I can see how therapy could have just made things worse by bring up other things that they forgot or moved past. If Stana thought this would work and Nathan thought it was a waste of time, she would be upset by Nathan's dismissal of the whole process. Nathan would be upset because they have to waste his time on this nonsense. Or something like that. Until someone reveals the truth, all we have is speculation. Both parties are classy enough to keep their mouths shut.
@@ericpeterson8732 So…you’re saying it was his ego. And why wouldn’t she negotiate a raise! She’s the lead actress on a successful show and getting good feedback. That’s business. If you’re good at you’re job there’s nothing wrong with wanting a raise. Andrew Marlowe said from the start that it was a “love story”, but,you could tell that went out the window when he left, and that’s why it tanked. Season 8 was a completely different show. It went from 6 good seasons of a fun dramady procedural, to a “blah” season 7, to trying to be a action show.
@@Miss_Myth like in all self employed careers, actors have to make money to pay the bills, so potentially short term pain for long term gain. Noticeable though that the Firefly regulars only came back as guests on single episodes, not for any extended period. Was the reason them not liking him, him not liking them, or something else entirely? We'll never know.
I loved the Castle series and have watched it multiple times from start to finish but would not have watched a Castle without Beckett version. Their relationship made the show to me. I really liked them both and I am disappointed that Stana Katic moved to a really dark TV series that I really don’t enjoy and can’t watch.
I do not give much credit to the rumors about the main actors not getting on. Their chemistry is fantastic, even in the last seasons... For me it's more about Marlowe leaving the show. The plots and the ideas in the last two seasons are very weak compared to the starting seasons. And some subplots like Castle spy family and missing time are thrown randomly and inconsistently over and over again. You need a good script to get good ratios and it was sadly thrown to the wind.
I started downloading it, skipping over Becket chasing windmills, and only watching the Castle parts. after a while I gave up on even watching those parts.
Personally I loved that Castle and Beckett finally got together BUT would of loved Beckett to finally get the revenge she set out for the whole time and that was for her mother’s death. From season 1 it was made Beckett’s number 1 reason why she became a Cop. Getting the revenge would of ended it perfectly. They didn’t need the whole fairy tale happy ending. Getting the revenge and being married to each other would of been the perfect ending. Them doing it together like they always did.
Side Note" Season 3 - Episode 2 "He's Dead , She's Dead" - the existing victim had give Castle a psychic reading about his fure where an women would move in with him and stay (offhandedly, he stated that was his mother. Also the Victim's daughter gave Becket a name from a psychic dream/vision about a man named name "Alexander" would become very important to her life, and later found out that Richards Castle 's real middle name is "Alexander" and not Edgar which Beckett6 thought it was thought he had changed for published author name only as "Richard Edgar Castle" and his real name is "Richard Alexander Rogers"
You're right! That was another other that underscored that this was about their partnership from word go! ABC could've curved this if they didn't want a situation where Beckett became vital, but they let to build and build only to want to yank her out in such an underhanded manner. They should've just closed it with her solving her mother's case and him getting that recognition and having grown thanks to his relationship with her, as we see at the end of season 8. Save us the grief that was 7 and 8 and convoluted and poorly thought out conspiracies.
They made a big mistake after Beckett arrested her mother's murderer. The producers should have followed more of their inspiration, The Thin Man, and have Beckett leave the NYPD and follow Castle around the world, solving mysteries.
See, I don't think season 7 was all that bad. Yeah, it wasn't as good as the previous 6, but it was still strong enough, Castle and Beckett DID get married, and it actually had a genuinely good finale that could have EASILY served as a MUCH more satisfying series finale: symbolically capping Castle's career, tying up a tragic past motivation, and cementing his and Beckett's relationship. Honestly, I own the entire series EXCEPT season 8 (which I've seen, and MOSTLY LOATHE), and I think season 7 does an excellent job as a final bow for the series.
If the show had gone on after Katic's firing, Fillion's image would have totally been wrecked! Rumors of his behaviour would have been confirmed in the fans eyes.
Still remains one of my favorite shows. It should have stopped after season six. Mother’s murder solved. They get married. The thing that drove the show was the two leads and the cases they took on. Pi garbage. Abductions. Going missing. Secret investigations. Taking on powerful bad guys. Lockstat. Stupid stupid stupid.
Also if you listen to the voiceover I think it means that Castle never worked with Beckett beyond the 1st case and the show was Castles written books playing out with him as a self insert. Castle just asked Beckett out and used her work stories as his muse and added his character.
Cool theory but not true. It was just a half assed way of adding closure to the show. And also doing a throwback to the first episode of the show. So like I said, cool theory, but not true
I'm actually shocked to find out that they didn't get along, their online chemistry was amazing. It's a pity and I'm disappointed in Nathan for not looking past his dislike of her. Also, There are few shows where the entire ensemble is just perfect. I did not like that rushed ending as I felt the entire cast played major roles. It would have been better if the last episode perhaps started with the ending of the final episode and let us know what had happened to all the major players and what they were doing in their lives.
There is a few things that I want to see in Season 9 of Castle. Is that I really want to see which path that Castle will take between still becoming a Novelist of writing more book or still become a Private Detective by solving the case with Beckett. And the other one is that Castle need to know about his Father's past way more along with the relationship of Step Mother that Castle barely knew from season 8!
Every interview I've seen with Katic, she seems like a very sweet and grounded person. (I acknowledge she's an actress, so....) This really sounds ridiculous. The rumors about Fillion are so disappointing.
Yeah, all I've seen "off camera", she really treats her fans with more than just respect. And I think every person in the public can learn from her in that situations. Of course, you never know a person just by watching that footage. However, seldom have I seen a person more polite or more engaged when meeting fans.
And these rumors are just rumors. There’s really no validity to them either. The tabloid that started them have been known to lie before, and watching bloopers, you could tell that while Stana and Nathan definitely seemed different near the end, it didn’t scream they hated each other.after also hearing Nathan and Stana both talking about how stressful filming was, it stands to more reason that the change was because they were getting burned out from filming the show so heavily.
I like the ending, slightly rushed, but at least they got a happy ending and it wasnt cancelled on cliffhanger. I think if the show had continued without Beckett, it would last one season and get cancelled. Kate and Rick were the reason people tuned in. The dynamic between them. Nope it wouldn't be the same without Beckett and it would kill everything the fans loved about the show in the beginning. It'd be like having Veronica Mars without Logan Echolls. Still made about that tragedy too. It would've been a big FU to the fans if they killed Beckett. Plus she was an amazing character.
They screwed it up by not having the wedding the first time. Could have gone on if all actors and writers seem to hate people being happy. Not exciting I guess.
It WAS a great way to end the show, since the show was done. They tied up all the loose ends, & gave us the happy ending we wanted!!! I was SO SAD to see it end.. but the happy ending took the sting out of it.
That whole rumor thing kind of baffled me. Moly Quinn almost worshipped Nathan. John Huertas and Seaamus Dever, it was reported, had a great working relationship with him. Everyone who has worked with him on previous projects has raved about him. Unless something significant happened, Unless I see a bunch of the lighting people, the make-up artists, the caterers and the bit actors come forward to confirm this. I personally find the report not very credible.
This is my all time fave series… until season 8 that was a total disappointment. And when the announcement of Stana not returning for season 9 happened I knew it’ll get cancelled because Castle wont be Castle without his muse.
The whole "Castle avenges Beckett's murder" storyline would've possibly made for great fanfic, but to turn the actual show into that, completely opposite from its original purpose (to Marlowe's point, this was a love story from day one), would've been a horrible mistake and would've made everything surrounding the show even worse. Though to be perfectly frank, I consider season 7 to be the true "final" season, because we don't get any of that LokSat/separation nonsense (though I think not tying Castle's disappearance on their wedding day to fallout from Senator Bracken's arrest--which had literally happened the episode before--was a narrative misstep).
Her acting carried the show. She deserved every penny she was paid. The last season was garbage and the constant challenges to their earned relationship was just bad rookie writing. Take away here is writers should be paid more to stay in projects. Period. Actors are amazing but bad writing can’t be fixed by brilliant actors.
After learning they were going to kill Beckett off I'm glad they ended when they did. I loved the show and that story would have ruined it for me. I like the idea that they finally got their stuff together and lived a happy life after the show.
The truth of the matter is that neither nathan or stana were very happy after season 6 and the change of direction that the overall story was taking, there was a lot of stress for everyone on the show and the hours were murderous on everyone. Nathan began to put on weight because of the stress, but always tried to cheer people up with his practical jokes, however this wasn't going over very well with Stana because she was stressed over her long distance relationship with her future romanian or albanian husband, this is proven by her waiting until the last minute to sign her renewal contracts for seasons 7 & 8. She was torn over whether she even wanted to come back for the last two seasons. This put a lot of friction on the set as well. As for will they, won't they type relationships in a television series, that goes back to tv shows like "Moonlighting" and "Remington Steele", each time the romance was set in stone on a series, it usually starts the show on a decline in ratings, once the dance is over the show usually falls apart. In Castle's case it was a writer's strike, the departure of the lead show runner, and the stress of new directors, writers and producers that decided to step away from the things that made Castle such an awesome show...the fun.
This sounds like a more reasonable explanation to me. I had heard Nathan in an interview saying the work hours were crushing him, and you can tell his health suffered. That doesn’t sound like someone whose ego was out of control and he wanted to be the only star. In fact, when he was talking about the start up of The Rookie, he was talking about being interested in a show that was not focused on any one character.
All offense intended: I don't believe for one moment there was hostility between the two main leads. Networks have notoriously used this lie to conceal their desire to "fix a show till it is broke" but avoid blame when the rest of the cast doesn't go along with it. Someone reminded Fallon that this would have paralleled what happened with shows like *_Lavern and Shirley_* where a main lead leaves under questionable circumstances with the network. Just like "unnamed sources" with news stories..... "unnamed network sources" are just as unreliable.
This show was the best. Could have went on and on. That's how good it was. How sad that they couldn't work things out. You know they could still try and bring it back.
I loved the ending of Castle! What the heck! Why does NO ONE like happy, sappy endings? Give me a happy, even sappy ending any day of the week. Life is tragic enough without my entertainment being tragic!!!
It’s not that they gave them a happy ending, it’s that season 8 was just so all over the place and that they were planning on season 9 without Beckett that when it got cancelled they added the flash forward right before that came out and that’s what aired. It was just all rushed and didn’t feel like an ending. Hell, the ending to season 7 honestly felt like the place to put the 7 year time skip to them with kids. Because it closed up all the characters stories.
I know what the mechanics of it were, typical ego driven entertainment actors, directors, producers etc. BUT, the end result, because they couldn't get their SHIT together was a "happy ending". God works in mysterious ways!
I told my friend, when he told me they were going to maybe do season 9, that it should have ended with Castle writing a story. They could have had a whole season without Beckett because it was just him doing what he did in the beginning of the series. Killing off his main character. To me, that was the only way they could have pulled off a a season without Beckett. I don't know. I loved the show either way and I was sad it was canceled.
Would've been doable if they hadn't sidelined the whole part where he is indeed a writer and got caught up in that PI nonsense. It would have been great to simply have her move on to maybe another role and for him to acquire a new muse. Not the PI thing though. That was cringey af. But I completely forgot about that potential parallel until you pointed it out--and I'm someone who's watched the show twice (minus s.8; once was enough)--because they just lost the plot with the 17 different conspiracies they had running by the end.
So you're what you're really telling us is that what the cancellation ultimately boiled down to was a friggin' salary cap issue??? Sorry but I'm not buying it. If the producers and writers hadn't screwed around with the formula that was working so well during seasons 1-6, and instead just let the two main characters continue the natural development of their relationship, there wouldn't have been a significant ratings drop, and there would still have been plenty of money in the show's budget. This was a deliberate decision by someone in charge who thought that allowing Castle and Beckett to be happily married while still working together would have resulted in the show turning into another "Moonlighting". Bad decision. There was plenty of room for continued drama between the two characters without repeatedly coming up with unnecessary plot devices to split them apart. That is what caused the majority of the decline in viewership.
This wasn't the first (or last) time a lead actor has had friction with a supporting actor that steals some of the spotlight. I'm sure that Fillion joined "Castle" as the title character and assumed his character would always be the focus of the show. Stana Katic played Beckett so well and with such strength that her role became more than that of a supporting cast member.
i agree with the comments. You wanted to make a show about a show who was literally Castle telling Becketts story. Even in the books (i read all of them) was more of the same. Making just Castle P.I. show would have been like making a different show. you could really see the show went downhill from season 7. i was not the same and you can't change drastically a show that was literally created and cemented as Castle and Beckett story. In my opinion, Marlowe maybe wanted to end the show on season 6 and the producers wanted to make money adding more seasons. so that's why he left the show (since the moment you sell a show, it becomes others propety). Castle was an amazing show, but they should have stoped before f things up
What did you think of the ending to "Castle?"
Till today after every Rewatch I'm still mad.
better than what they were going to do honestly. a S9 without becket would not have been satisfying. Sure it was a bit of a jarring ending, but at least it was an ending.
Good enough, I prefer a happy ending over a garbage extra season without Beckett!
@@entertainmentwizard2703 Personally I think they went on too long in that respect and should have capped the story arc with the wedding.
@@CaseKirby Absolutely. Would've loved that.
Love becomes hate.
After she left there just wasn’t a show. At least if she had been killed off I’d have not watched it. I’m not a Nathan Fillion fan. I don’t think he is one bit as cute as he thinks he is.
100% agree
In my opinion the main problem was that they made it too serious. The first few seasons had a light tone. From when Castle went missing it took a nose dive.
So true! After season 3 I really missed the atmoshere of the Castle. It was getting worse and worse...
I totally agree! I liked the light hearted feel of the show in the first couple of seasons. I didn't mind it being serious here and there, but not so much. And I felt the show "jumped the shark" when Castle was kidnapped on his wedding day. I really hated that whole story line. I would have continued watching if they would've killed Beckett off and had the crew go after her killer.
good point.
Also the plot lines with Castle's memory wipe and then the truth serum were all a bit...much.
One of the best shows ever👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
And, just for the record, there’s no Castle without Kate.
I more than loved this show. ... This couple is sooo convencing.... Can't stop watching.......
I took the ending of season 8 and tacked it on to the end of season 7. When Castle gets the award and they get a murder and walk away I put the ending there. It blends well enough as it is the same music. I watched season 8 once but never again.
This show & Mentalist I keep watching again and again. It’s family oriented, shows a woman who loves her job, professional, and strong. Best show.
Both are awesome but it seems in retrospect that The Mentalist managed to hold off the romance between the stars until the very end, which is something in fact few tv shows can do right.
Try psych. Maybe.
" A writer and his muse, fighting crimes"
Killing Beckett would be the worst decision ever. ❤
Nope. Don’t believe this
Well it would have been up to the showrunners to make that work. Shows can remain successfull after changing direction and elements of the main cast.
It's a risky move for sure but it's been done before sucessfully.
No point wondering about what-ifs though. The show got the axe and that's that, it had a good run and ended on a satisfactory note.
Nathan was the star,so he had a lot of input ,
I believe the rumors, that Nathan was a jerk, who was jealous of his co star.
There are just too many .
He is now a star of the rookie ,and he has a say in the writing, they busted up,a couple ,who were popular,
But,they kept,him,wth a girl ,most don’t like.
I only found Castle recently through Hulu. As an author myself, I expected to gravitate towards Nathon's character but Stana absolutely blew me away. Talented actress and a compelling character. Castle without Beckett would've been horrible. I'm actually glad it got cancelled rather than see that happen.
I wish the ended with the capture of the guy murdered Beckett’s mother.
Totally agree!
That’s why, he got jealous
But "Hollywood" can't do successful women. If you have to pay them as much as men (heaven forfend) kill off their character!
I agree..
Hollander's Woods was definitely in my top five, if not my favorite episode...
I recently started watching Carter, which went downhill in season 2 when he opened his own P.I. business.
That missing time storyline did suck.
Castle no longer at the precinct was like if Norm was no longer being at Cheers. When the whole Lockset thing started, I was OUT.
Yea, we also don't "see him thrive without Becket" if you ask me. It's clear she's the one who makes his life interesting :)
I just finished my rewatch of this show, it's my favorite show by far and I rewatch it at least once a year. And it still upsets me that they chose to cancel the show. Even more so that they fired Stana without so much as an explanation. It was one of the best shows on TV and it's my comfort show.
I love how you labeled comforted show....that's how I feel
See I’m actually happy that they cancelled knowing Stana wasn’t gonna be in season 9. You can’t do Castle without both Castle and Beckett
Yeah It's a bit disappointing to see such a good series end but I'm glad that it ended at this point and didn't keep on dragging with seasons that would've been horrible. At least it ended on a high note.
Such a great show. I was sad when I heard stand fired cause becket was such a well written and acted character.
And shocked that they just wanted to kill her off, like her character didn't deserved to be happy at the end. That "7 years later" scene felt rushed and out of place. But it's better for me to know her character ended up being happy at the end instead of just being killed off for a plot device for Castle to get revenge.
Glad they were professional enough to keep the series going. I loved this series. I’ve seen it twice through now.
Not me!
I watched for Beckett. Happy it was cancelled.
There can be no Castle without Beckett. That's just the way it is.
Agreed. What's the hell is wrong with letting them ride off into the sunset together. Damn.
But could there be a Beckett without Castle?
@@88COR88they DID ride in the sunset in one episode, in season 7 the one with the telenovelas actresses
There actually is, it’s called The Rookie
Killing off castle or beckett would of been a atrocity
So true
Watched the ending recently. While I think they should have stopped at 7, I came up with a “head-canon” interpretation for the ending. Basically, the voice-over implied that Castle and Becket got together after the first episode, and all the episodes since then have been in Castle’s novels
I like it, I'm going to console myself with your interpretation. Thanks.🥲👍
I like this perspective 100%!
Fillion's own manager admitted that his client, " loathed Katic " and " told the network that " either she goes or he ( Nathan ) would quit ". The show's cancelation made his threat academic
Because Stana was better than him and he didnt like that
He basically stabbed her in the back when she got ahead of him as a fan favorite! Couldn’t take not being the star!!
@@cathytyrrell-tp6ttTrue he was jealous.
Good tv show suffered because of the personal drama.
Agree
Considering his response, no
Not plausible. Where did you get that? Cause everything else has shown the opposite
Years, years ago I thought that 'Chuck' ending was terrible or forced. Now, in compare to 'Castle', seems more like organic happy ending... wow.
yeaaaah i am still pissed at it. Chuck (and House MD) being my all-time favourite series, despite whatever was season 5... had an abysmal ending. It was a comedy.... Comedies must have happy endings.... If it was not a comedy that would have been a great ending for Chuck.
Thought the exact same thing.
Loved the show, Stana is a very talented actress.

It was not "Only you, a writer ..." it was actually "Only you, my former college acquaintance, and one of the few that are too famous to be quietly terminated id the spy mission goes astray"
watching this video and seeing how rarely fillion and katic's faces were actually on screen at the same time says alot
The entire basis of the story was CASTLE telling BECKETTS story through HIS eyes. Without her there is NO SHOW!!!
It’s obvious that Marlowe was the driving force behind the storied people wanted and once he left, so did that story arc
& out went the story of Beckett solving her mom’s murder. It’s a great show, but that’s my pet Peeve
@@PolGara0139but they did solve it
2:29 Detective Esposito. Javier is his first name. That's not exactly a minor detail. (as you said, he's one of the primary characters)
Instead of taking what these clowns say, do some digging and look what happened for yourself. Hint, it's not what they say.
Sorry for your loss. It’s good you’re finding peace.
@ thank you for your kindness.

Such an underrated show - still come across reruns and it truly was based around both characters -such a disservice.
5:22 Never knew that, but that explains the shift in tone and drop in quality A LOT
Huh? We FINALLY understand the ending of Castle? How was it hard to understand? Seemed pretty straightforward all along.
I loved the show. My wife and I watched the show all the time. But the show isn't the same if you don't have Castle and Beckett
Andrew Marlowe sir please make that happen again and give us back CASTLE show
Loved the show and both leads. Awful to sack her and glad it ended as it wouldn’t be Castle without her!
God, I feel so bad for Stana. She put up with so much for this show and they just threw her away. Def tainted my view of Fillion, he was such a d*ck
I am wondering if there was a secret little fling and Stana called it quits and Nathan got upset.
I was so upset when i came across this article bc I was a fan of Fillion and loved the series. But after reading the article, I'm no longer a fan of Fillion. He's a good actor but a d*ck of a person
@@ChromaticVanity ohhh is that what happened? Well that's super sour. I REALLY like her characters she's played. That's SUCH a shame about Fillion. Like why. I've def. worked with bosses (I know he wasn't one) that would break me down and build me up. It took me MANY years before I realized what was happening and questioned why I wanted to please them so much even though it felt impossible.
@@JenniferPChung I should say allegedly bc I don't want any backlash. But from what the article had said the assisstant made it out as though he was the bully
He's the reason I kinda hate Castle and I will not watch Rookie not rewatch Firefly or anything else He's the main character in
I love the show I Have watched it multiple times upon rewatch especially, you can see how well-written and intriguing it is.
( an ending like season 7 would have been 100000 times more satisfying than what we ended up with.)
If they were not so focused on making the centered around Castle they could have focused on making the story stronger with Locksat I mean they spent 6 seasons concentrating on taking Beckett's mother's murderer down, it was so interesting to watch they couldn't have spent more than one rushed season which they chose to spend pulling Rick and Kate apart to take down Locksat some excellent writing I am sure could have come from that not to mention viewers would have loved watching Castle and Beckett figure out married life and the questions that arise from that dynamic instead all we got was them being apart most of that time.
Arg. I still can't believe they got rid of Beckette. Just madness!
Where is Stana Katic these days…. Should be doing shows… she’s so talented.❤
As far as I'm concerned, Castle ended after 7 seasons. I don't even count season 8 as part of the series.
She did at the end of season 6.
Stana Katic is the Absolutely 💯 the Bomb!!!!!!!! Hope she can Return!!!
Interesting theory!
Cool theory but not true. It was just a half assed way of adding closure to the show. And also doing a throwback to the first episode of the show. So like I said, cool theory, but not true
Castle was one of my favorite shows. It's a shame the original show runner left.
The show should’ve ended with season 6 with their wedding
I'm actually shocked to find out that they didn't get along, their online chemistry was amazing. It's a pity and I'm disappointed in Nathan for not looking past his dislike of her. Also, There are few shows where the entire ensemble is just perfect. I did not like that rushed ending as I felt the entire cast played major roles. It would have been better if the last episode perhaps started with the ending of the final episode and let us know what had happened to all the major players and what they were doing in their lives.
I think this is the only show the fans fought to have cancelled in order to save it. No Beckett no Castle (the show).
There is no season 9.
Every interview I've seen with Katic, she seems like a very sweet and grounded person. (I acknowledge she's an actress, so....)
This really sounds ridiculous.
I just think that the finale as a whole was rushed. The season 7 finale with the flash forward would have been the best possible ending.
I Started Castle because of Stana Katic. I have been of her for years before. I love in her in The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice TV Movie.
that moment when you realize that this was a How I Met Your Mother show
He kept his job. She’s the one who got fired. Networks don’t care about about actors, they care about ratings.
@@tananario23 not at all what my company comment meant lol
6 years later after the series ended. Wow.
One of my favorite shows. You couldn’t tell they disliked each other. Great acting!
They probably didn’t dislike each other. Rumors are simply just rumors and have 0 credibility.
In fact, when he was talking about the start up of The Rookie, he was talking about being interested in a show that was not focused on any one character.
thank you for this.
They don't make show like castle anymore.i love castle.
Without Beckett, there was no show!
This was good but also didn't cover the fact that by the end, the fans DIDN'T want the renewal without her. Boycotts were threatened
Thank God Katic wasn't fired
I liked Toks but she isn't and would never be a Beckett replacement
I don't go based on rumors, and if there was bad blood, Nate definitely doesn't show it as he constantly praises his former costar
