The British Flame Defences of WW2

- In the Autumn of 1940 Britain faced the very real possibility of a German invasion. To combat this they lined the coast with defences such as bunkers, minefield and anti-tank weapons. But one of the most fearsome and least talked about defences involved fire. The flame barrage was a series of pipes which ran from the land into the ocean. They were filled with flammable liquid then ignited causing a wall of fire on the surface of the water. In today's video we talk about the crazy British flame defences of World War Two.

My uncle told me about this years ago before he passed. He was an American on the English coast learning radar for the US army. He said the British would not let this get out, since the US had not yet entered the war and our public would see it as "dirty" fighting and react negatively.
He specifically mentioned the exploding oil drums.
To add on, the English knew the Germans were gathering barges together in French harbors for Operation Sea Lion, their invasion across the channel. The English knew they could not stop them as they had not yet gained the upper hand in the air war.

One wonders if this was as much of a deterrent as anything else during the invasion planning. Part of the planning would have included mitigation for this tactic.. maybe they couldnt/didn't have the time to figure out what to do and headed north? VERY interesting and no, never heard of this.@@PremierHistory

I've heard of flue gas. That was used in Vietnam artillery fire bases for essentially the same things that the British were using it for.
This strikes me as a case of the cure being worse than the disease.
Arguably yes, but I’m sure it would have had some effect on Operation Sea Lion, especially the Flame Fougasse

I've read Taiwan considered something like this. No idea if they actually installed it or hoe effective it would be. I could imagine a buttoned down amphibious IFV driving through it.
Definitely an IFV could have, although for the most part Germany were utilising large open top barges for their vehicles and tanks, which I’m sure would have been consumed
