- Last week's sale of the Henry Graves Jr. Supercomplication made by Patek Philippe for $24,000,000 has become international news. This mega pocket watch has been in countless newspapers and magazines around the world over the past 10 days since the gavel fell at Sotheby's in Geneva. But, this is HODINKEE - and we always try to go the extra mile so that those who may not be able to hop on a jet for an evening sale in Geneva can still experience the thrill of seeing the world's most expensive watch go under the hammer. I had the remarkable pleasure and honor of actually holding the Graves Complication. I had a business meeting on a drizzling, December Sunday in 1994 in Rockford, IL. My office had booked me into the Time Museum Motel, next to the Time Museum (naturally). After breakfast, I noted that the museum was open and went in, the only visitor. I knew about complicated watches, including the Packard and Graves watches. The museum host was glad to have a visitor. I explored the collection, unaware that the Graves watch was on the premises. He appreciated my interest and asked me if I would like to see the Graves watch. Yes, please! He went into a separate room, probably to a safe, and brought it out on a rimmed, velvet-lined walnut tray. He gave me a pair of museum gloves and let me pick it up. It was not light, and would have been an exercise to carry around. He showed me all of the functions, having wound it after he retrieved it. He put the watch back on the tray and brought out a magnifier on a stand, allowing me to get closeup views of front and back. I can say, confidently, that the watch was the most-expensive object I have ever held.
"You bought a watch for 20 MILLION!"
"It's complicated"
24 million.
I see what you did, there.
It’s super complicated
This thing took 3 years to design and 5 years to make...WOW.
and without computers
It’s astonishing, end of.
Either it’s very complicated or the people who manufactured it are super slow.
The video about how this watch is made is even more unbelievable. Nice piece of work.
camera man wearing a datejust?
Yes
Wow....Def. a watch worth owning...just a tad bit out of my price range.
Speachless absolutely amazing 😍
It's quite strange to hear Aurel Bac's voice at an auction where he isn't the auctioneer. A real role reversal.
Simply beautiful !!!
some say it was found in a cash converters in bolton..
Seeing this watch inspired me to buy a pocket watch for my best friend. This is an engineering marvel.
Patek phillipe is to me in my top 2 superb watch brands along with audimars piguet they are exquisite timepieces
AP is a great great watch but vacheron constantin is the second best watch after patek philippe
And I thought the Ferrari 275 GTB-4 NART Spider sold last year for 27.5 million was expensive... Who the hell spends 21 million for a pocket watch? The guy has to be worth at least 11 digits, no?
You probably don't need much more since after 10 years you can sell it for a tidy profit. Who needs stock market.
The guy has a whole country behind him ahahahahhaha (fr tho he does)
@@mo7.7 An ignorant and dumkopf will pay $20 Mil for a watch
@@sergiovartanians1271 It's not a simple watch, it's art.

just noticed and was going to mention, but saw your comment.
Amazing!
Dang it, I would have gone with 20,599,999, but it's now just out of my budget!
That's crazy, he could have gotten a Timex for less than a $100. Man, what a dope.
"Super Complicated"??? Pfffft...
I have a Casio with a calculator on it. Let's see Patek pull that one off.
Very beautiful... I would have gone for the grandmaster instead, but that's just me.

This thing will double in it's worth in 5 years
The bidding opened at 9 MILLION Swiss francs! WOW 😨😱
Isn't this the watch from the Antique Roadshow?
Aman Pasha no, completely different watch
Insane
Expensive Alarm Clock!
if you call something important enough times maybe it will become more important.
If you believe something is important then it is.
I hope it was bought by a true watch-enthousiast and not by some ignorant fool who just bought it to show off how much money he has.
Pfffft. I’ve got two of these. My dad like, owns this dealership.
Please let me know about the history of my SOTO 21 gem watches {see my video's ancient watch; Wristwatch brand 'SOTO' '21 original gems}. What I am asking:
SOTO watches produced in what year?
Which SOTO watches are made by which manufacturers?
History of Tissot watches.
The first product introduced by this brand is a watch that has two time zones. This product was first launched in 1853. Then in 1929, Tissot issued another famous product that is anti-magnetic clock. They joined Omega Watch in 1930 and at that time Tissot-Omega watches
using what name / brand:?
Thanks for the information.
They don't make 'em like that no more!
You can buy jet
And there's me wear a 100$ watch for years.....
Yuuuuuuuup!
I thought the sellers name was Henry Graves Jr.
Opening 9 million!!!!!!!
It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle......
Yes, so true.
unbeliveble.
Could you imagine being so filthy rich, you could drop 24 million on a watch?
قطعة راعة جدآ جدآ ولكن مبالغ في سعرها
Patek bought the watch
bought from banggood for £15
A man can pay for a watch 21 million dollars... how much money can one man have.... crazy
at least 21 million dollars
ARQ GDS money launderers
I think it was Patek that bought the watch. Not one man.
Meanwhile in Africa
Matt Jones You're right... what a shame!
+Matt Jones Meanwhile in Greece.
takeover08 Greek here, 15 years old, wearing one of my 3 luxury watches
I know... kids could have eaten that watch
@Ho Sniper toto
I hoped that it will get higer. Soon, Rolex Newman will overpass this marvel, and I think, then, we will lost the concept of value.
What they didn't say was: 20 million Swiss francs is only 30 Bob in English money😊
something is wrong with switzerland... when you see a cameraman at 1:30 wearing 20k€ rolex...
korencek something must be RIGHT with Switzerland if a cameraman cam afford that
it's not right when it's disproportionate.
What's disproportionate about it?
BOOYA !!!!!!!!! (:
I hate to be “that guy” but considering she’s the Chairman of the International Watch Division for Sotheby’s, she should probably learn how to pronounce Patek correctly. It’s not “Paddick”. It’s “Puh-Teck”
Incorrect. Officially it is pronounced Patek, not Paddick or Puh-Teck. There are videos of the company on UA-cam in which employees and even the owner and president pronounce the name that way. Patek was a Polish nobleman. The name may be pronounced differently in Poland, but Patek himself changed his first name Antoni to the French variant Antoine. It is clear that as a company name it should always be pronounced the way the company wants it to be pronounced.
@@ltsch1671 Ok. I’ll look into that. I didn’t know about any of what you said. All I know is that it’s definitely not pronounced Pattick or Paddick. I’m an American myself but frankly I’m fine with saying that whenever you hear somebody say it that way you know it’s most likely an American man who has no clue what what he’s talking about.
@@ltsch1671in polish it would indeed be pronounced as 'puh-teck' and it is the correct way

His wife will be super complicated after he bring back the watch
Watching rich people waste money is my fetish.
Is it wasting money if in 20-30 years its worth twice as much? It's really an investment so they are making more money off of it. Is watching rich people make money also your fetish?
im short 5 dollar. goddamit
Well, I’m gonna be the next owner couple years later

Joke is on the buyer... Phones can tell time now.
It’s not about telling time
So does the sun.
Yup 3 years to design and 5 to make something that will never be used and does absolutely nothing for the betterment of mankind that is truly a waste of time and skill
Watch is Cursed.
id rather feed a thousand starving people for that amount of money
Well it was their money and they chose to spend it on something else, get over it.
jamjamlui go and topple those leftist rules that make people starve ... it is all man made comrade
UN FUCKING BELIEVABLY BEAUTIFUL!!
At the end of the day its just pieces of metals arranged in a particular order, that will not last nearly forever...and neither will we. So foolish and ignorant to sell and buy for all of that money when people are in need.
A $ 30 watch and a $ 300 watch show the same time. "
So naive
Most likely a $30 watch is a Quarz watch, a $300 watch can be already an automatic. So the most accurate one will be the $30 😉
This is so stupid.
H H it's smart, ya get to hide your Ill gotten wealth in a single object and it'll probably go up in value in 10 years time.
Paul Newman Daytona is much better in every terms
Andi Valentinus it's a normal watch with a simple movement , it only costs that much because of the name
With all due respect, your statment proves you have no clue what you're talking about.
Andi Valentinus Paul Newman $17'752,500 millones and just steel lol.
Not really Andy, and just think, the proceeds are going to chairty from the Newman Foundation.
In terms of watch historians you can not compare the two. The Rolex was made famous by Newman but this is a one off with important technology for it’s time.
