3-3-3 ON AN A330?! Flying Air Transat's Airbus A330-200 from Calgary to Vancouver

  • Air Transat is a Canadian leisure airline that flies mostly to European and sun destinations from eastern Canada.
However, one thing about their aircraft stands out - they fly mostly A330s in a tight 3-3-3 configuration - and Air Transat is the only airline in mainland North America with a setup like this on an A330.
See what I thought of it on this short hop from Calgary to Vancouver!

Last winter I was flying back to school in Ottawa from Boston and stopped at Pearson. So many flights from Toronto to Ottawa were cancelled due to the weather. So they joined a bunch of the smaller flights to Ottawa together onto one flight. An Air Canada 767-300er absolutely jammed packed, all Uni students. That was a fun and crazy 1 hour wide body flight :)

I flew on an Air Transat L-1011 back in the day, and theirs were in a 3-4-3 (10 abreast) config, as opposed to most airlines doing a 2-5-2 (9 abreast). Even though I was a teen, I remember it being pretty tight.

There was a time when Air Transat had increased seat pitch and used standard configs (8 across) to match Air Canada's planes because Transat has gotten such a bad "sardine can" image that it was losing market share. But with Air Canada having gone to "charter" configs with 10 across on 777s and 30" seat pitch, it's sad to see Transat have reverted back to their old selves. So when it disapears next year, absorbed into AC, it won't really remove a choice.

I flew Air Tansat a couple of years ago LGW-YYC and YYC-LGW. It was about 8-9hrs in a tight 3-3-3 config but it actualy wasn't that bad. Seats were comfy but narrow, legroom was Ok and crew were lovely.
The cabin looks to have been updated since then. The IFE selection is ok but not great for a 9hr flight.
    I was in 5A btw

I have flown on 3 long haul flights Montreal-Paris and Montreal -Barlcelona .a A310 flight Montreal-Madrid and found the seats in both the A310 and the A330 were fine along with the legroom and the cabin crews excellent.....On the other hand I have flown a Air Canada Rouge flight between Montreal and Barcelona 5 years ago and found the legroom terrible...The drawback with the A310 is that you have to use your own tablet and download there app and there is no inflight entertainment on the seat back.

Flew round trip on Air Transat from YVR to London Gatwick on an A330 last year. Its was cheap for a reason. Found my self as were a lot of other passengers standing near the washrooms as the seat was to too small for 9.5 hour flight. Was not a fan of the mood lights, they never shut them off on a overnight flight when i was trying to sleep. The flight crew however was very friendly and attentive.

Couldn’t agree more we flew from YUL to CYO with transat paid for extra leg room and did option plus and Daniel Vezina meal and didn’t even have any room to eat out meal I’m over 6ft y’all and 230 lbs roughly and I couldn’t even sit comfortably on the 737 it was swapped too 2 weeks prior to our flight in row 1 which I paid extra leg from for I had none! I ate my meal in the gally and had a middle seat as my spouse was sitting beside me and she couldn’t eat unless I moved. Our flight attendant felt extremely bad for us. Our return flight was on the 330-200 and leg room was much better is 14H but the seats again were extreme tight!

So here is the sad reality when it comes to Air Transat in Vancouver. They ( Transat ) were great, we could fly Vancouver to Glasgow non-stop usually eight and a half hours. Fares were competitive and my wife and I would always add " option plus " for a few extra perks. Flights were always on time and the service in flight was very good. Too bad, those days are gone ,, now from Vancouver to Glasgow it's a total of fifteen hours, first you fly to Toronto, spend four hours there before your flight to Glasgow.
Well too bad, I don't quite see the reasoning in cancelling a non-stop Vancouver / Glasgow route. I've travelled that route a number of times with Transat and the flights have been full. No more Transat for me.

Before Thomas Cook Airlines went belly up I got to fly them from Las Vegas to Glasgow on a A330 using 2-4-2 (economy) layout. I thought that was very comfortable. On the way back I was on a Norwegian B787 with 3-3-3 layout in economy, that felt crammed, especially for a 10+ hour flight.. What was the date of this flight? It looks like in the summer or spring, definitely not the fall when this was published. Thanks!

Pretty cool! My experience with a widebody airplane also connected with A330-200. Several years ago Aeroflot Russian airlines used that during high season in the summer between Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, when they had not enough A321 between 2 russian main cities. That was a flight (full plane of asian tourist who comes to see the fantastic SaintPetersburg) just about 75-80 minutes long. Using widebody is an amazing experience. Enjoyed that. :) Congrats with your attempt :)

9 abreast seating should never be used on an A330.

They have to make money somehow so it either adding seats or higher fares . Take your pick.

Why such a short flight with a big rig? I lived in Toronto for decades and that’s almost like flying Toronto to Montreal?

In Ottawa, you land on Runway 25 Only. No Right or Left 😉

Air Transat... not quite Canadian version of Sun Country, which I suspect is truly unique...

I’d say it’s more of a Canadian version of Thomas cook or TUI.

I know the max you can get on the 200 is 406 and the max of seats on the 300 is 440.

What’s up with the curtain between Club and Economy? Usually, at least on the flights I’ve been on, the two classes were always separated by an actual wall. Anyways, thank you for making this trip report! It was awesome ✈️

    • @thearsenalmisfit2414
      @thearsenalmisfit2414 4 роки тому

The wall is fuel burning wieght that is not needed. Curtain are much lighter but look as tacky as hell.

@@thearsenalmisfit2414 The curtain is only above the headrest. A full divider would take up more space as the legroom for Row 4 cannot tuck under the Row 3 seats.

@@1992AC i wouldn't count on that. The Max will still be gounded so Air Canada will need the extra seats. Right noew the are flying 767s out of Edmonton that are flying with just over 140 passengers to Toronto. Ive done this flight 3 times now and have the whole row to myself each time. Its great . Keep the Max ground for as long as possible as far as I'm concerned I will never fly on a max again.

3-3-3 on A330 is nothing new. Cebu Pacific operates a full 3-3-3 436 seat all economy A330-300 for flights from Manila to Australia. Their upcoming new A330-900neo even have 460 seats...

  • @linesided

Fun fact, the seats on this plane have the same pitch and width as the average 787 seat. Think about that next time you go "oooooo, nice new plane" 😂

Nice video Alex, the A310 fleet has probably changed a little since I was on one, but I'd definitely recommend the bulkhead seats! Will be interesting to see what the ACA/ROU/TSC merger will bring, but I suspect either ROU or TSC will disappear.
