This performance makes one realize the intricacies that exist in the music of Liszt. So many subpar performances of Liszt fail to realize the incomparable, sensitive, awesome and rare expression in his works; sorry, but fast and loud doesn't impress me. Argerich is amazing and plays this piece perfectly. Only a truly dedicated artist can play this way.
This is literally breathtaking. I found myself holding my breath from start to finish. Her technique seems so effortless; she just floats over the keys. Beautiful.
It's hard to imagine Liszt himself playing this piece better. Absolutely breath-taking, full of soul, immense depth, and delicate artistry. Martha's prowess is towering!
Truly, if anyone would want an example of the technique of Franz liszt, here it is. During the life of Franz Liszt, Liszt had occasion to be a part of a piano competition. The opposing pianist, one of the best pianists at the time, came a close second. What they said of liszt was his notes sounded like pearls on velvet. I get that impression with the flawlessness of Marta's technique!
First time hearing this work. Outstanding piece and beautiful performance by Martha Argerich! I'm sharing this Liszt with my former piano students for them to think about learning it.
At 1:39-1:44, that is the fastest piano playing I've ever seen in my life. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed that fingers on a keyboard could move that fast!
It's music like this that makes you marvel at Liszt and try to imagine what it would have been like for someone to sit at the piano and compose and perform this. Liszt is the unrivaled piano GOAT.
I think along with Virsaladze, Argerich might be my favourite interpreter of this Liszt etude. The two of them bring the leggiero like I've never heard before.
lol@ the face she makes when she finishes! That's priceless. I've always considered this one of her least controversial interpretations. It's nearly impossible to disagree with playing like this. However, I did once hear an INSANELY fast and energetic live recording of her playing this - an encore, I think. At the end, the audience was screaming "Martha!", or so I always believed, till someone later pointed out it was just "brava!". Still, I like to believe they were saying "Martha" and holding up their cigarette lighters! :D
I’ve seen a lot of comments in videos about this piece about how it’s very “Chopin”. One more addition to that: the passage beginning at 0:31, lasting for a few bars, seems like an elaboration of the main theme of Chopin’s 4th Ballade, does it not?
There are flowers to gather for the Master's bouquet, Where we may all live in heaven one day, Where we will never grow old, or be sad and alone, But will all gather together 'round God's great throne.
I interviewed the 45 people who disliked this piece thanks to a granted petition to UA-cam and it’s interesting to hear their replies: “ it must be photo shopped” “ I don’t know her and I’ve never met her but she must think she’s something special“ “ couldn’t she afford color? “ I could play better than that if I tried, I just never really tried“ “ people say she’s a genus? I’m a genus”
@achgaia It's like "fuoco" or "foco" ; "cuore" or "core" As you say, one is the older usage (you read those spellings in Manzoni, or in 19th century opera libretti) the other is the modern usage. Things like that interest me and I enjoy looking them up. Perhaps a silly past-time, but it keeps me happy. Or, as a former teacher used to say "That's all very interesting, if you find that sort of thing interesting." I do!
Martha took this etude and elevated it to something we never could have imagined. Magnificent playing and thanks for sharing this interpretation. I wish I could have been at one of her concerts to hear this though...
The greatest performing pianist of this era. PERIOD.
Pure magic by a pianist who's greatness remains unsurpassed.

sem40721 Couldn’t have said it better sem, do you still remember this video after four years?
If you think that's what this is, then try the Paderewski he recorded in the US. Makes this sound like dishes clattering on the floor.
Funny cause she plays this piece fat and loud 🤔
@@micoveliki8729you clearly do not understand music.

...y Liszt escuchándola? ...fascina!
How can one have such an effortless technique... it looks like she isn't even trying... it's brilliant

Like a dream come true. Only a musician-artist of her stature can reach such heights.

It is not a KEYBOARD and "speed" is not the only thing that matters
@@pastichemusic3568 I think somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed :(
@@Jack.Strait 😂😂I don't know if you're referring to my comment or the person's comment
@@pastichemusic3568 actually, it is a KEYBOARD instrument, just like harpsichord or organ.

Absolutely perfect.
Better than everyone else's here. Amazing! Practically flawless.

Martha Argerich is in a class by herself. (So is Liszt)

She plays the ossia as if it’s like a piece of cake!
This is really hard and she makes it look like the easiest piece ever!
The 25 dislikes are blaming the black and white display?
Divine inspiration!

Her pursed lips at the end, like... "eh, that'll do"
