- The Eastern Conference is getting better, but the Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to make a move to improve its roster.
How surprised are you that Koby Altman has been as patient as he has thus far in the offseason and is that the right approach for the Cavs?
We’re just over a week into free agency. It’s a good time for the Fear the Sword staff to provide a temperature check on where we feel things stand for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The exercise is simple. We voted on a scale of 1-10 on how much confidence we have in the five categories below and why we think that way.
There should be a split on how we view the front office this summer. On the one hand, they’ve taken their victory lap and won the bet of re-signing Donovan Mitchell after staking the bulk of their future on his long-term commitment. Then, they hired Kenny Atkinson and ushered in sweeping changes to the coaching staff. Finally, we can presume an Evan Mobley extension is on the way - securing one of the best defenders in the NBA at just 23 years old and setting the stage for Cleveland’s foreseeable future.
Conversely, there is growing unease at the general lack of activity from Koby Altman. The Cavs have stood idle through the start of summer while other teams, notably the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks, have upped the ante by acquiring new talent. The front office is doubling down on its commitment to the core, in a move that could be just as risky as shuffling the deck.
This summer will likely be the defining moment of Altman’s tenure. His patience may be rewarded heavily if the core reaches its ceiling under a new coaching staff. Not to mention, adding another first-round draft pick in Jaylon Tyson to potentially contribute. Yet if all of this patience leads to stagnation - the front office will have fumbled a prime opportunity to be a contender in the post-LeBron era.

Koby is not a shrewd negotiator. He will work and work at it with no success, then to just get a deal done, the opposing party will fleece him. Mark my words
Bulls point on coaching is spot on! I see both sides but coaching is biggest upgrade we could’ve made and I feel like we nailed it

Guys! I absolutely love your show and I watch it every day if not multiple times a day. Unfortunately, today I'm here to say I officially have to tap out as long as long as Jay (NOT Jason!) is on this show or whenever Jay is on the panel. He does not know how to be part of a group. He cuts people off. He talks over people. And he even answers questions that are specifically directed to other people, while saying 'I think this is what he means.' They are not adding anyone until Okoro decides what to do. Jimmy would be great if he wasn't old and so high paid that CLE would have to give up, not only DG, but at minimum Levert or Strus as well. Altman gets way too much love for Donovan taking the bag.
The fact is without any real draft assets, the odds they can get any "great fit" or missing piece without parting with Allen or Mobley is an unreasonable expectation. DG right now might not get them equal value in any player, without adding draft picks from some 3rd team.

@@devontebroom6800 Best option is build up DG value trade him at the deadline. If Tyson is the playmaker they say, he should have little trouble finding useful minutes with Mitchell after that.
If they are healthy the team will be better than under JB, but they are never healthy
@@wheelman1232 Ainge is better than Altman. Markannen was never given the usage in CLE to find out what he could do as a first option. That is Altman's mistake, he hired JB. Didn't know what they had and as a result is no excuse and the reason they got fleeced.

I would’ve traded Mitchell. We’re just enamored with names, if you take away his perceived “star power” he hasn’t improved us. DG took us from 22 wins to 44 and he made the all star team. I can make an argument that DG showed up more in the Knicks series than Donavan.
But since we didn’t, I wanted to trade Caris to get into the lottery. Now.. trade Allen. Won’t do that.. pray to the stars Emoni Bates is him

I’m going to say something nobody likes. Our core base is not enough!!! And I’m talking about last season. Everybody upgraded. Turning our fourth place into seven and eighth seed at best. Trade two and get busy.

why do we need to break up our core 4? They have only been playing together for 2 or 3 years, as Cleveland Cavaliers fans, we have to give it more time. I think everyone is overreacting. The problem isn't the core 4. it's the bench. They need to work on developing Cleveland's rookies and 3 year players ( Emoni Bates,Craig Porter Jr.,Luke Travers,Jaylon Tyson,Pete Nance,and Isaiah Mobley.
Levert and Okoro are the 2...to be moved...maybe Niang as a salary filler....along with 2's...Core 4 will be soooo expensive moving forward

It’s obvious you guys don’t watch basketball at all. Malik Beasley is the worst defender in basketball and Derrick Jones was next to 3 shooters in Dallas and his lack of shooting was fine. We have a lack of shooting in our bigs so our SF has to shoot. Maybe you just don’t know basketball.🤷🏾♂️

What is Jay talkmbout? We saw the team flourish when they got to the #2 seed WITHOUT DARIUS/MOBLEY WHILE USING ALL THE OTHER GUYS OFF THE BENCH. The hell he talking about as if it was the core 4 that did that...THEY DIDNT. THE FLAW OF MOST CLEVELAND TEAMS IS ALWAYS BEING RISK ADVERE AND STANDING PAT WHEN EVERYONE ELSE HAS GOTTEN BETTER.
Mobley and garland played in the second half of that run where we got the 2 seed. They stopped winning when Mitchell got hurt
@@will8359 Not to necessarily say that they stopped winning. They were just abysmal in both March and April. But Mr. Krabs said the reason why they were terrible in those months was because of me eating during Lent. He said I was supposed to starve myself on all 46 days of Lent.
Evan Mobley will be exposed this year and everyone will go balistic. I said from day 1 get rid of Mobley. The whole team is soft as Charmin. Now you have a coach that's just as soft. Go ahead get rid of Allen, get rid of Tristan Thompson and see what happens. When Mobley is benched, everyone will wake up.

Bull is the only one correct out of the 5. DD Jr? Really? The cavs do not really defensive wings. They don't need a playmaker. They need an average defending, average rebounding, average handling etc etc... SHOOTER. That's all they need. They're elite defensively. DG is an ELITE playmaker. DM is the best scorer in the league. They just need a guy at the 3 that can shoot the lights out. And that guy ISNT available. Jesus christ why is this so hard to understand?
