I think you could easily invert your argument on wealth and nepotism in MHA. Todoroki and Yao can reinforce it.
They seem to be the only ones that this really applies to. The rest of the class seems to be from middle class families or lower and you made a video on ppl whose quirks don’t really seem to warrant a place in the esteemed class.
It more telling that Todoroki & Yao still have to go thru school and not buy or influence themselves into a pro hero job. All might is told several times to set aside his feelings for Deku and be impartial. He should be the last person that could be criticized if the system were so nepotistic

You should have also talked about how their society classify some quirks as being “more suitable for a villain “ eg; shinsou’s mind control quirk and how this can lead to great discrimination and potentially self conflict. It is rumoured that this is how a cheerful high schooler like Toga became a villain- because her quirk ( the ability to transform into someone by ingesting their blood ) was seen as villainous, and she eventually turned to the dark side because of this faulted society

To be fair his execution wasn’t bad. He set out to teach the hero’s that saving people only for money isn’t right and you should save them because that is what a hero does! And if it is your life on line instead of a random civilian then maybe you understand the same fear they feel. The same hopelessness that they endure simply because they can’t be hero’s. In his on way he brought the same feeling of needing a true hero to the hero’s as the civilians feel.

    Unpopular opinion alert.
I think a big problem for the hero society is (or rather was) the presence of All Might. I know, I know, "But he's the #1 Hero, the "Symbol of Peace", how could he be/have been a problem? What about all the good he's done/did?"
Well, the thing is, All Might was just too good. He was too strong, he shined too bright. Everyone thought that he was unbeatable, invincible, that he would always be around to save the day. Those thoughts and feelings, even though they put the people at ease like All Might wanted, had an unforeseen side effect. It caused the people to become over reliant on a single person (himself) and caused the heroes to become complacent and didn't think to get stronger and further improve themselves. Season 3, Episode 7, after Bakugo is kidnapped, Midnight said "Besides, All Might put an end to most organized crime. We're all rusty." After that, Present Mic agreed by saying, "We've definitely gotten complacent during peaceful times without realizing it. I guess deep down, all of us thought we'd be riding the sweet life for good." This shows that, because of All Might's presence, heroes had been getting lazy and took things less seriously than they should have. When All Might retired, crime skyrocketed to new heights, the heroes are unable to deal with their new problems, and the public is in haywire, scrabbling to find a new "symbol" to rely on, to pin all their hopes on. The thing is what's needed is strong heroes who take their work seriously, not celebrity darlings, and not a "symbol of peace". Yes, All Might did an immeasurable amount of good, had a positive impact on the people around him, but on the flip side, he's actually hindered the current generation of heroes, just by being what he set out to become all those years ago: The Symbol of Peace.
Sorry for the huge comment and like i said, unpopular opinion alert. This video earned a like and subscriber.

I wholeheartedly agree. This is something that I see a lot, not only within this fandom. Often, when we find heroes that we can depend on, we do so in excess. Instead of inspiring us to be like or better than them, they make us slack off, thinking that someone else will take care of it.
I recall in one episode of MHA ™ that a couple heard Deku training in an alley, but one of them pulled the other away, saying, "Let's not get involved."
This was a poignant moment, all humor aside.

    • @kurokaji6232
      @kurokaji6232 5 років тому +34

Yeah to be honest, I like All Might as a hero and person, but the people were just too dependent on him. Not all of them are fans of All Might, so they'd rather have other heroes get recognition. I agree with your opinion, since I feel like they made All Might's presence the norm. Not everyone would appreciate a bulky and abnormally positive personality. It's why I personally like Nightwing more than Superman or Batman. He's not as muscular as these two famous pillars, but he does get the job done, and even is considered the most sexualized superhero.

    • @breeze5926
      @breeze5926 5 років тому +30

I find that the problem would mostly fall on the other heroes than All Might, for not stepping up and trying to be like him. All Might wanted to be a symbol of Peace, someone for others to rally behind, but instead of them trying to stand side by side with him, they all just followed in his shadow, benefitting off of the momentary peace he brought. I can see with Izuku it will be different. Izuku has already made his class rally behind him, each of them striving to be like him. He inspires others to give their all. He's going to succeed where All Might failed. He will make all other heroes rise up with him.

U.A. must be publicly funded or have a generous scholarship programs. Uraraka has mentioned multiple times how her family is quite poor and that one of her prime motivations for becoming a hero is to ease the financial burden on her family.
Also, on the issue of powerful quirks gathering near the top of society, while that's certainly a possibility, it has been mentioned in the manga that quirks have been getting more and more powerful each generation.
Another critique made by multiple times throughout the series is that heroes are often picky about who and how they save people. Twice only ended up as a villain because of the mental illness caused by his quirk, whereas hero society rejected him, the villains accept him for who he is.

Gentle is also another example of villain who exist because he was entirely unfairly shunned by society. He messed up one time for trying to help someone with his quirk and was made a villain because of it. Rather than being condemned, Gentle should've had a bright future as a hero after a training.

I've noticed people from the USA have problems grasping the concept of good public schools. People asked JK Rowling the tuition of Hogwarts even though it's clearly free; I once saw a video speculation the cost of Orange High School from Dragon Ball assuming it must be private even though it looks exactly like any other public school in anime

    • @davidbodor1762

Well regarding Uraraka I'd say yes a scholarship can help, I mean probably most of 1A can classify for a scholarship since they're supposed to be the best of the best, but also Uraraka's family being poorer than the others kind of makes sense if the school costs a lot, doesn't it? I mean yes once she gets her degree she can help ease that burden but it's normal for families and students to rack up debt WHILE they're studying...her going to UA might contribute to said financial trouble for now...

@@davidbodor1762 if Uraraka had an scholarship it would come up. Have you not watched anime set in private schools? It comes up, also by the way Bakugo and Deku live I don't think their families can afford private education. There's no reason to assume a good school in Japan must be private

    • @davidbodor1762
      @davidbodor1762 5 років тому +3

@@MakiPcr Why would it have come up? Students don't generally talk about those in public a lot, and it's not crucial to the plot either...Bakugo and Midoriya are both in 1A THE prestige star class school and they're both in the top half of it too, they probs have a scholarship too, or student loans...you know, a lot of students have those...
And yeah it's not necessarilly private however in Japan, High School isn't mandatory, many are government funded BUT still cost a lot of money. I think this is addressed in the video when he mentions the cost of a school in Japan. But like also, in a lot of places around the world, just because a school isn't private, doesn't mean it's free.

For the whole thing about Hagakure using her quirk at all times, I think that is why the quirks are classified into three categories, Emitter, Mutant and Transformer.
Mutant type quirks would be Hagakure, Ojiro, Shoji, and others. They might be exempt from this law under technicality since their quirk is literally part of them. Though if Hagakure were able to not be invisible at will then her being invisible 24/7 could be considered against the law. Or that one guy in the Vigilantes manga who was literally a giant blob of slime. That’s his quirk and he can’t not use it. Ojiro’s tail and Shoji’s could just be considered another limb, if I had an extra functioning arm it would still be just that, my arm.
If you think of the law being interpreted this way then the law is prejudice against those who have Emitter and Transformation quirks.

It seems like the law would be prejudiced against Emitter and Transformation types, but realistically Mutant types are the ones most likely to get noticed by the police. Some mutants are more like mutant-hybrids, like Shouji with his ability to grow new limbs on the ends of his arms, and Hagakure’s ability to flash light through her invisible body, so the police could always claim that the Mutant type they arrested is actually a hybrid who was using their quirk at will.

It’s a lot like the “He has a future” argument used to protect rich white boys when they rape someone. No one stopped him because they didn’t want to ruin his shot at being a hero. Also, he was bullying someone who is basically a second class citizen, a complete nobody, lower in the quirk social hierarchy than Bakugo’s mum and her glycerin sweat. Why would anyone want to ruin the chances of a rising star with so much potential, just because of a second class citizen who is worse than nobody?

Stain not only has a good ideal (though his morals on how to Express them have much to be desired), but Endeavour?
He has several times made it clear he wants to beat All Might and become the number 1 hero and uses his son to try and achieve that.
Now, does that actually sound like something a hero would do, use their child to further themselves with no care as to said child's own feelings on the matter?
Then there's the Nomu incident in Hosu City. He was only there because he was trying to get Totaroki to learn from him, but when a couple bystanders asked what he was doing there he said "because I'm a hero" as if he'd gone there solely to save everyone, when we know damn well that ain't the case. He only said that because he knew it would boast his image.
And that's even before getting into the physical and emotional damage he did to Totaroki's mother.
Yeah, All Might is indeed a hero and fully deserves the number 1 spot.
Endeavour, however, not only doesn't deserve to be the number 2 hero, he doesn't even have the right to call himself a hero at all.

I actually really like the idea of OFA and all might and deku's stories. They were both quirkless individuals who were given power yes, however that isn't to say they did not earn such power. Their ideals even as quirkless people were so much more heroic than many heroes and to even use OFA you need to train like crazy just to use a bit of its power correctly.
So while other heroes were born with extraordinary power all might and deku effectively earned theirs technically speaking.

I understand the concept of a registry. That's honestly fairly reasonable. Like a gun or weapon registry but to make it equitable just have everyone sign up that had a quirk.
But the rules about usage are what definitely don't sit well with me. I love My Hero Academia but it is very concerning that civilians have no right to use their abilities in public, even if the situation calls for it. Say an emergency where an ability like Ochaco Urahara's could save lives by lifting debris. Or a mundane and harmless quirk like Mrs. Midoria's being used to catch something on reflex, maybe a fragile vase or something at a store. If either of these events happened in public, both would be labeled villains under the current system which makes NO SENSE. There are no guidelines for a scale of offense. There are no set categories of exceptions. It's a zero tolerance policy and we KNOW those are used disproportionately against minorities and the poor.
One big question I have regarding the world is what about people who are disabled and have quirks. What are their rights and social protections? Are they barred from becoming heroes outright because they're disabled? Are people with cognitive disabilities sequestered away from society for "safety"? Are disabled people allowed to use their quirk in public if it acts as a mobility or communication aid? Say a mute person utilizing an emoji generating quirk or a physically disabled person using prehensile hair for movement.
This system is far too binary for a modern world IMO. I get that in Japan disability is still somewhat taboo but in the USA disabled people are active members of society like everyone else.

In laws and Rules would work well. :) In Academy City which is in "A Certain Magical Index", they have 3 Police like Forces. 1) Droids and other automated Things. 2) Judgment: people acting as Heroes. people with Powers. 3) Anti-Skill. A Police Force that also Specialize in Counter measures and anti-Supernatural/SuperPowers/Magic/Monsters/Creatures. Also All schools evaluate Powers/Quirks and their Growth/Change, each year for all Students. Like a Fitness Or mental exam. And People can use their Powers when ever or any where. So long as they don't Break Established rules/laws while using them.. Like a no smoking sign would be a Rule. While Braking Property would be Braking the law.

Not really, the quirk laws in MHA aren’t enforced the same way you think they are. In general because of how broad and how many quirks there are it’s impossible to completely regulate it. Quirks like “attraction of small things” wouldn’t be punished (unless used for a crime) because of how mundane it is, it really isn’t a crime to use your quirk if it doesn’t harm anyone else or cause potential harm to someone else.
There’s also another exception to the law in that using your quirk to protect yourself or other people in a crisis. (Similar to self defense laws)
And on the topic of someone using their quirk to help with a disability I don’t see how it would violate the law. If your blind and have a echolocation quirk it wouldn’t be noticeable enough to be called for. Or if someone is paralyzed from the waist down and can use a levitation quirk to get around it probably won’t be punished unless it becomes a safety hazard.

Stain had some truth in what he said, and the characters recognise it too, but a) he was way too simplistic with his ideals and b) he took a really bad approach.
Ochako wants to be a hero to make money to support her poor family. In Stain’s eyes, this isn’t a noble enough motive and she should be dead.
Iida Tensei was a kind, compassionate hero, who had a lot of saves to show and mentored a bunch of sidekicks to help them grow into better heroes. Yet because he went into hero work out of family tradition, he’s deemed unworthy and is paralysed from the waist down.
On the All Might to Endeavor scale, most heroes fall somewhere in the middle, and those people who are in the middle don’t deserve to die. Yet in Stain’s world, if you’re not an All Might, you’re an Endeavor.

UA isn't a private school, but even if it were, UA is FAR from the only hero school in japan. shiketsu, ketsubusu and a half-dozen others pop up, and there's even the unnamed public hero course gentle was trying to apply to in his backstory. hero courses are like post-secondary education, you could go to your local college, or you could go to harvard.

Here is a way to kinda fix alot of problems in one shot: have a kind of license so you can use your quirk in public that anyone can get at a certain age, and of course the provisional license and the hero license so you can fight villains. Of course someone might say something about villain being technically legal, but there are other laws they would have to break to get the villain status. And vigilantes are still kind of illegal, but in the way that they cant fight villains. They would be able to use they're quirk to like save a cat from a tree, though.

As for the wealth disparity of UA, I think it’s probably more likened to be a magnet high school. It’s probably publicly funded and a major investment for the government considering that they were able to build dorms super quickly. It’s in the public’s interest to have a well funded hero academy too. So maybe there wouldn’t be tuition but there’s definitely a wealth disparity since some quirks could easily make money. Maybe there’s some sort of civil contract where you have to work as a hero after graduating

You’d think the MHA world would have some type of group to basically serve as a way for people like Gentle (those who want to become heroes but end up flunking out of Hero School) to still help people. We’ve never heard of any type of Hero GED or anything, but I’m sure something like that would exist to avoid pushing Quirk users into villainy.

This is actually pretty helpful, especially since I made two MHA OCs,one with a quirk similar to Present Mic's(only without the off switch),and the other is made of lava.In the case of the former, she was actually sent to jail because she used her quirk, all because a fight between a hero and a villain broke out, ended up in her school, she screamed and considering the damage, she was thrown in the slammer. With the other, his mother died in a cave related accident, and obviously no heroes were there to actually help,so...yeah.
Point is that the world of MHA has a lot of corruption involved...

Can Toru see herself? If so, i wonder how she would describe how she looks. Also, how did her mom know where to put the shirt and stuff on Toru as a child? Unless Toru's mother is invisible too and they can see each other, but what about her father? Surely he didnt have invisibility so what was his quirk? Did Toru inherit another quirk and never realise it? Or does she only have her mothers quirk? Maybe her mother and father have a completely different quirk than Toru, but how would she have gotten invisibility? What if one of Torus parents can turn stuff invisible by touching them and accedentialy touched Toru bc she was quirkless and told her, her quirk was invisibility?

Just one thing: being born to a family with strong quirks doesn’t necessarily mean your quirk will be strong (look at Shouto’s siblings for example. Touya had a quirk incompatible with his body that might’ve been strong but physically harmed him every time he used it, and Natsuo and Fuyumi seem to have pretty weak quirks considering Endeavor never bothered training them the way he did Touya and Shouto), and on the flip side, you can get a strong quirk from two seemingly useless quirks (for example, the Bakugo family. Katsuki’s mother sweats glycerin, and his father has oxidising sweat. Two pretty useless quirks that created Kacchan’s absurdly powerful quirk). And that’s without covering the rare but possible quirk mutations.

I think with the public usage it probably depends on the quirk and the situation, like Mrs Midoriya using her quirk to pick up her keys that she dropped is maybe going to get her a telling off if a cop happens to be walking by, but nobody is going to be actually phoning the police on her. OTOH if Bakugo was rocketing down the street, he’ll probably be in a good bit of trouble due to the recklessness of his actions. Always on quirks would be treated kind of similarly, provided you aren’t a danger to others it’s not reasonable for any action to be taken.

I was afraid of watching this video, but after watching it, the material helped me a LOT with a fanfic story that I’m developing. So, thank you!
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about individuals with “Meta” Quirk types, like Spinner, Tokoyami, Tsuyu, Mina Ashido, and Hagakure. Those people have Quirks that can’t be turned off. They’re an intrinsic part of who they are; they were (assumed) born that way, so their following super-strict Quirk laws would be extremely difficult. Tsu can’t stop being a frog. Hagakure can’t stop being invisible. And Spinner can’t stop looking like a Ninja Turtle reject (sorry!). Aside from Invisible Girl, Meta types can have additional quirks that can/do fall under the Quirk Use Laws (Mina’s acid and Tokoyami’s Dark Shadow), but for the others, there has to be some sort of Meta type carve-out in the HeroAca world that legally allows for their existence. (Even if “Hero Society” probably still discriminates against them.)
Also, Horikoshi-Sensei had once talked about an NPC that appears once or twice onscreen - he’s a news reporter, a guy with one large horn and one horn stump that we see sometimes in the newscasts. Apparently there’s still some Meta-type discrimination that happens in Hero society, so in order to make his audience comfortable, he cut off one of his horns. But apparently that made some people unhappy, especially some Meta-types. Lots of side commentary with that little story.
I’m assuming that Japanese Quirk Laws are more strict in different ways than U.S. Quirk Laws. And since this is set about 200 years into the future, after Hero Society (sort of) stabilized, I’m wondering how the U.S. handled the upheaval of Quirk evolution overall? I’ll need to dig deeper into the Vigilantes manga.
    Great video!

It's pretty obvious as well that with the rise of quirks, people just stopped caring about mental illness. If you look at the league of villains, almost every single one of them has some sort of mental issue, the worst of which being Twice. But it appears that due to their quirks, no one really cares. This is also a big deal, as quirks have also been the cause for rising mental issues, as we can see with Twice and One For All, as Twice's quirk drove him into a state of constant insecurity, and possible split personality problems, all because of his quirk- or more importantly, how he has a lack of understanding of it. Schools like UA would be perfect for people with self-harming quirks, who would need to properly practice and learn their quirks to safely control them. But due to UA's outrageous entrance exam, many people with dangerous quirks that could potentially lead to horrible mental issues are simply ignored if they can't destroy enough robots. And from what we see the police do to people like One For All, they obviously don't offer mental help to villains with quirks that have made them the way they are. If they did, One For All would be receiving constant mental checkups, brain analysis, etc. to try to find out why he thinks this way, and how obviously his quirk has something to do with this thought process. But instead, he is kept under lock, gun, and key. Instead of looking at his psyche, and finding his superiority complex, and other mental issues, the only mental monitoring they do is just to make sure he doesn't activate his quirk. Honestly, this new world is really cruel towards people with mental illness, and honestly, it doesn't make sense why they are surprised why there are so many villains with mental illness.

Honestly really nice video and all it just your argument feels like a derailment to talk about U.S. politics instead of the class disperratity, questionable laws, and discrimantion based on phiscal appearances the show is subtly exploring. Plus MHA is set in Japan not the U.S. which means the author(who also lives in japan) will be using his cultural experiences and intrests(which does include American comics so there is a possibility for some bleed over) to build and develop his work.

Going with this idea, I think it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility that Deku has a quark like "Inspiration". A passive quark that always subtly effects himself and those around him to be the best version of themselves. Well, tuition never came up when talking about the 3 Hero Academies mentioned in the 4th season so it could be government sponsored or, more likely, privately funded. The Principal mentions that he paid for alot of the new security measures implemented after All For Ones escape so it's not impossible to theorize that the schools in Japan has financial backers. Probably the Safty Committee puts alot of donations as well so they can study the students abilities, backgrounds, and personalities in hopes of recruiting new "Behind the scenes wetwork operatives like Hawks and Gunmaidan.
In Amarica? Maybe? I got the impression that laws governing Quirks were internationally cornnated by the U.N. so Hero Academies mayalso fall under U.N. control too, and thus be privately funded. I have no proof or sources to back that up so IDK
