Supposed die-hard Slayer fans often say this cant be the best Slayer album, it's too slick, too clean, too commercial....but you tell me: what in the world is even remotely commercial about thrash metal songs about necrophiles, Nazis, Satan, and gang warfare? We must live in different worlds, coz Taylor Swift this ain't. And i for one think it pound for pound the greatest metal album ever made.
Listen to the Diabolus in Musica album and God Hates Us all, youll get it then.
Like this album undoubtedly fucks, hard. But the tone is overall more mellow compared to how brutal those albums are, including creatively and skill wise.
They aren't satanists..so got called out by a Christian metal band..fake..broke my black little heart..

I swear to dog, this sounds ten times better now that i am 46. When i was a teenager back in the 90s it blew me away, but back then we all had shitty cassette players. Listening to it with proper monitors is another new experience! My favorite Slayer album. Their absolute zenith.
YT and the other platforms like Spotify and Apple stream at 320 bitrate MP3 or less which is poor digital audio. Not sure what kind of setup you had back in the day but even lower end cassette decks sounded awesome running on a decent rack system. Everything back then (including this album) was recorded/mastered on reel to reel analog. Tape cassettes use the same technology.

I thought I was the only one who saw it from that perspective,indeed I could say that besides the fact that we have been misinformed most of the time by the people who control the world,in rock songs there is always a match when it comes to matters, events around the world through the time and bizarre things media perhaps do not inform about.there is a song called epidemic " reign in blood album"if you ask me personally I would say it sort of tells about the COVID 19 pandemic.
True art is a direct reflection of this whole society.

Totally agree. Lombardo has pure timing, power and finesse. Very few drummers could carry off this track let alone own it like he does.

I've always been a metalhead, but I like classic rock too. I grew up loving Sabbath/Ozzy and Priest, definitely fell in love with Metallica and Slayer instantly.
Just another masterpiece by these legends. They lost a bit of steam on their next album but from Show No Mercy to this record it was a list of genius thrash.

@@TangelTingelBob1 Paul drummed his butt off on Divine Intervention. And I feel for him somewhat. He played great, he put in the effort, but whoever mixed that record, messed it up big time, particularly the drums. Drums sound like cardboard, like toy drums, there's no power to them. Dave's drums were mixed more punchy, the kick and the toms, big reverbed snare and toms on 1990 LP. The band didn't lose their steam either. Think of it, they were still thrashing their brains out by 1994, when most of previously thrash metal bands decided to compromise and chose commercial radio-friendly approach. Slayer didn't, they stuck to their guns and good for them. I have more problems with Diabolus in Musica, myself. I heard Kerry hates that record too. Nu metal was all the rage by that time and the band apparently listened to what their label had to say.

Probably their most balanced release. It hits hard like Reign in Blood, while solidifying Slayer's melodic tendencies from South of Heaven. Fantastic album. My favorite of 1990, next to Nowhere by Ride.
I agree wolf. South of Heaven is also an achievement for Slayer. The band has so much talent and potential. 😊

Seasons in the abyss is probably my favorite Slayer album, but I love most of the old school Slayer. Show no mercy, South of heaven, reign in blood, and the like. Old school Slayer is my favorite Slayer.🤘🤘🤘🤘

I have had the CD for 30-ish years. And the Decades of Aggression live album. And yes, I can still play them. No scratches on them. Was my first Slayer album and to this day it is still my favorite. Never gets old.

Such a brilliant band. This album is a godlike masterpiece, as too their much-adored and acclaimed classic Reign In Blood. South of Heaven, wow, another stunning record. This is right up there. Such an important album by such a significantly important band, not just in its genre, but for all of guitar or rock music itself. Truly awesome. Inspired. Get on it!

This album along with Reign In Blood and South Of Heaven are my top 3, can't choose between them, thrash perfection!

IMO the song Seasons I the Abyss has to be their greatest song. It has everything from the great riffs to the dark melodic lyrics. Amazing.
IMO, every song from Reign in Blood is the greatest Slayer song! But Angel of Death is at the top.
While I consider myself a fan of all genres of music I lean more to the metal side of my tastes. I know I haven't heard all of Slayer. I tend to find I enjoy them more in small doses. It's only the last couple years I've really gotten to appreciate them more , I e. Angel of Death and Raining Blood, but I've loved this album since buying it in the Navy in '94. This is one of the few albums I can listen to without skipping a song, so, in my opinion, this is one of the top 10 greatest metal albums ever. It's near perfection.

Then Lombardo returns for Illusion.
A terrific return to their roots that I have a soft spot for.
Painted blood. Songs that grow on you after a few listens and the last with the great Hanneman.
