Thanks for the video. Good content. I actually turned down a job a few years ago to grind stumps because I didn't think the little chipper from the rental place would be good enough.
Brilliant video. Have watched others where people are slapping the stumps. Very methodical....the approach I,ll be using tomorrow here in the UK 🇬🇧 . Thank you
Just took out 3 large stumps about 2 foot across each, took 6 hours to grind them down, if the Chippings look like "pulled pork" it's not working properly, blunt and or worn bearings, it should chip not rub. Hope this helps
Joe Williams you call Stump Depot from Florida . They grind stumps big as your truck for $99. They can grind your stump cheaper than you can rent them machine
Thank you for an honest and great video for this stump grinder. I am going to pick one up at a rental company and put it to work. Thank you for this video bra.
You ground this one down to 3” below grade and said that was enough considering you weren’t planting grass above it. How deep (ideally) would someone need to go if they planned on planting grass seed over top of it? Thank you, great video
5" for the roots to fully establish, with most grasses. I've seen grass grow over 2" deep stumps no problem. Source: 10 years experience stump grinding 💪
Thanks for posting. Most videos online show folks abusing these machines & are brutal to watch. This is a great video. I was wondering if this machine could handle bigger 36" D to 48" D stumps....but seeing yours was 27" D at 13mins, I have my answer. Thanks again!
Great video and thanks for the real time!! My wife and run a lawn care and small trimming business, just getting around to doing some stump work for some customers. Renting from Home Depot first then maybe we'll purchase our own.
35 yr tree man here, i do 4 foot stumps with the same machine. I can throw it on the back of the truck and bring it almost anywhere. Maintenance is a breeze.
You are best advised to start grinding 3 feet back from a big stump, make broad sweeps and clear away the loose soil you displace. Then as you approach the body of the stump you are grinding the large anchor roots and are low enough to grind the 'floor' of the stump from the side approach or at least get the floor without having to 'dig deep' for it. This way you will do some work clearing loose fluffy soil in the beginning and avoid finding yourself on top of a pile of chip-soil mix that is both preventing you from reaching your work and obscuring the location of the deeper stump. You will know what I mean when you get at it.
Thanks for the vid, I have like 4 stumps to remove, they're not that big like that but I have big river pebbles around them I have to remove them cause I don't want them flying around and possibly breaking some glass or something. thxs.
Moving chips is the key to doing stumps fast. Chips get machine off level and slow cutting wheel. Weather small machine or large if chips are backed up around wheel your losing time.
That's about an inch down. Even though it's a shallow grinding I'm a bit surprised by that little machine. I wouldn't trade mine for yours but good job. I still wouldn't rent one that small cause most rental places don't send any machines out sharp, big or small
I did..... sold it 10 years back for $1800. Back then they weren't going for the insane prices like today. I regret it. I also regret selling my KX500.
Well done. I began stump grinding perhaps many years ago with a 13 HP unit that was a lot like yours. I used it for several years and they can be quite the workout. I have seen people rent units like yours, but unfortunately the rental companies didn't know enough about the stump grinding unit to replace or sharpen the grinding teeth so the customers ended up having a bad experience. Having sharp grinding teeth makes a huge difference.
Extremely helpful to see it in real time. Thank you. I was goign to rent a giant tracked one but this looks perfectly sufficient. 10-15min is super chill.
Liked the video and especially the narrative that went along with it. You told us the condition of the machine, what you were doing, and why you were doing it that way. If we wanted to watch 10 minutes of stump grinding we could and we then knew it would take that long. That is one of the things I wanted to know. Great video quality as well. Thanks!
Saw a comment on another video that was saying these little stump grinders are too small for anything bigger than 4” diameter. Thanks for the regular speed video showing it getting that 27” done in 13 min. I have a massive mess of trunk and root system from an old oak in the middle of my lawn to smooth down and I’m now convinced this will be the best tool for the job.
Great video, very helpful and a realistic approach. Also I'm a dad too so I think it's cool you left your son in asking about the grinder/video in the end too👍.
Excellent. I have around 100 smaller stumps on the property after clearing a few acres a couple years ago. I was seriously debating on buying this exact grinder, or to get a PTO grinder for my tractor. It also almost seemed I should get both since this will get into places the tractor can't fit, even though the tractor will be faster. Thanks for the video. This is the first time I've seen someone use the tool right.
Banshee I got a one at homedepot....I like also that you are using without lock.....I think I would like it better if I did the way you did it......with caution as always...thanks for fast reply.... Rick
thanks for posting.. i'm considering buying something similar and just wanted an idea of what I was getting into.. and not a sales demonstration, this video is perfect.. sometimes simple is better
Ive rented one of these a couple times and the teeth were always beat to hell because its a rental after all. I think now that I need one again, I'll just buy one and then use it at my leisure and sell it when Im done.

i just cut down 4 palms on the side of my house. i thought i'd dig around the stumps and yank them out with an engine hoist. piece of cake, yeah right! try that when the soil is gravel and clay. you've convinced me to go this route. thank you for that slap on the head.
It made quick work of the stump that was above the surface, but it did not go very deep. You would have to go deeper to ever have grass, or to ever plant anything there.
Great Video. Yes, your correct, most other videos, don't give a true picture of how its done as well as how long it really takes. It gets a AAA rating!
For a small gas powered stump grinder it's not bad at all. It can't compete with a big diesel powered hydraulic grinder, but that things will easily set you back 10 grand. Honestly, your cheapest option for a one time use, just clear the yard of stumps, is going to be hiring a landscaping company to come out and clear them. For a couple stumps, I'd rent this baby.
Spent 450 today for 3 stumps. Best money ever spent. Watching rental videos and doing research is a waste of time. Just hire someone with the right equipment. I understand doing it yourself to save a few bucks. But sometimes it is best to hire someone. As good as your grinder is. Unfortunately it wouldn't work for me.
Thank you for this. I have about 8 stumps I need to grind. About 2 are this size the rest are smaller going down to 6 inches. I know it would cost alot to pay somebody. Home Depot rents these for 170 for the day. I want to give it a shot.
Thank you for a very informative video. I have many oak stumps where I had cut the dead tree and left about 6 inches above ground. I am thinking of renting a stump grinder and need your advice on how to check the rental machine that I don't get a blunt machine that will take hours to grind through a stump.
I rented one from home depot and it was sooooo dull it did not cut at all, it only "rubbed." The friction would actually burn the stump!!! I took it back and got another one, but no improvement. I spent at least 10 hours on one stump!!!!!
I just ground a stump yesterday, but my wife wanted it all the way down to the bottom. We went down 14 inches to remove as much as I could. Took 2 hours and it just about killed my arms.
That’s Awesome you really explain about this machine it’s also like the price you got it for it looks like you can take it like you said to places that most can’t go . Thanks for sharing
This and the bandit are excellent machine for most homeowner applications. Hope you also consider the PREDATOR a handheld model quite useful in confined working spaces. Don't forget plywood planks serve as runners for hard to access spots.
Thanks Banshee for the video. One thing I was wondering if you or anyone else here can help me with, is I'm thinking about renting one of these machines to grind a stump. It's actually quite a bit smaller of a tree than the one you ground. I would say maybe they're only 16" diameter max, maybe even as little as 12". The trick is, I have to get down further because i need to plant grass where they are. They are ornamental trees that are on mounds that come about 8-12' out of the ground, so not only do I need to take these root infested mounds down, but get I'm guessing 5-6" beneath the surrounding ground level. Do you think that is possible to do all that with a machine like this? I'm guessing the one I want to rent has similar specs. It's a Bluebird with a 14" cutter wheel.
Like my son asking me what I'm doing and why. Those are the most important years to fill their heads with some serious knowledge. My son has been driving zero turns since he was five, because he was always asking me what and why. My son is 9 now and helps to cut the yard. He strangely loves helping do yard work and gets mad if I don't let him help. Especially if I'm using a zero turn.
Thank you for this video, i was curious how a rental quality machine would work. I have some very large stumps to get rid of and was curious if my body can make it through all of them in a single day (12 stumps ranging from 20 inches to a big 25x40 that had 3 trees in 1.
Excellent video! This is exactly the video I was looking for. Someone who knows the machine and how to operate it. No drama just how to do the job and how long it took them. You've got a new subscriber!
I bought a used one from home depot and after a few adjustments... it works great. There were some things I had to fix and probably the bearings soon too. For the price I already made my money back and more.
I was just quoted $500 to literally have the same size stump in diameter and height done. Ah...nope. I told the guy, so you charge $2000 an hour cause it's a 15 min job. My two boys and I dug a bit deeper around and my trusty Husky Rancher saw did the rest.
Rented a toro from Home Depot... took 4 hours to grind a 26” stump that’s including rotating the teeth... thank god I saw the pictographs on the side. Otherwise I’m sure it would be 8 hours... and of course after Home Depot closed I rotated the teeth... the 3rd(of3) tooth was just a bolt and two nuts!
Keeping in mind this machine begins with new or newer sharp teeth. You’re not getting new teeth if you rent from homedepot. Keeping in mind he doesn’t grind below grade, only flush. So what’s the point of even doing this if you can’t plant grass or flowers when your done?. Watch any stump grinding video on UA-cam and observe the massive mulch pile left behind after grinding a foot below grade. This video there’s almost no mulch pile since he doesn’t go below grade. But you guys go ahead and go rent lol. When your arms are beat to death, and you’ve wasted 3/4 of a day with a worn out rental wreck give your local pro a call...
Nice, video. And thanks. I have "cabbage palms" roots do you think it'll work on those.. with your experience using the stump grinder? It look like it will work but idk. @banshee8989
I have a dosko it had a14hp on it I ripped it off and put a 22hp predator from harbor freight I found on marketplace for 300$ and it's a beast now that stump will take 10min. Also put a 2500 pound winch on the deck up front to load in a pickup with ramps works great.
Can I skip cutting the tree down with the chainsaw and just cut the tree down and grind the stump at the same time with the stump grinder, seems like it would be more efficient.

Well thought out (considerate w voice over) video. That you gave an honest hands on opinion is what most viewers look for. Thanks.

Rentals often have worn teeth, yours works well with good teeth on it.
My friend had one years ago, they are great. Good video 👍👍👍👍
