I don't remember it being this BAD!!!! PORTUGAL FARM LIFE

- This is the worst winter that we have experienced in Portugal, but we dont really know why. It's not the coldest, or the wettest, but for some reason we are both in low spirits!
Fortunately the sun came out for a short while inspiring me to grab my camera and film you guys a little vlog. The farm is looking amazing! The fields are growing nicely and are full of flower blossoms!
We rehomed our Geese this week to a lovely English couple who have a beautiful farm nearby with a small flock of geese... they send us some pics and it looks like they are settling in nicely... we also saved a turtle (At least I hope I saved it as in hindsight it was still pretty close to the road!)
We are basically in hibernation mode and as soon as this cold rainy weather ends we should be back to our normal vlogging selves.
Hope you enjoy the video and the beautiful views... all the best & happy easter! :)

Low spirits don't have to be justified. They just come. I don't know if it would work for you both, or if you're already doing it, but when I get the sads or the scaries, I maximize the opposite. Up the cozy factor with candles and baking or popcorn or making out. Or up the joy factor by being silly for myself (not others), watching a funny movie, going for a walk in the rain (which, let's be honest, is kind of ridiculous). Exercise if you have space for it? It's different things for different people. But you're loved by us all and we wish you the best of spirits! Happy Easter!
Very good advice! Thanks :)
April showers bring May flowers!!❤❤❤
Nice update Ken! Rain might be bad but at least you'll have enough water to survivve the summer ...
Yeah totally, we are finally out of drought in this region after a few years of severe drought! So I'm happy for the rain, im just a bit fed up of the house being muddy and damp from the dogs running in and out of the rain!
Be thankful for the rain. It brings life to the farm.
This was the wettest winter i can remember ( i`m 66 ) here in Hamburg. It rained till October and stopped mid March. My tomcat allways had ticks, but my cat, who is now 15 years old never had a tick in her life. Greetings from Hamburg
Thanks Herbert! At least it has ended the droughts :)
I've been in south Alentejo region in easter weekend, near south limit of Alqueva Lake and its almost with record water level in years! Also the lakes and dams of north Algarve are now recovered levels of water. Seems that this year summer will be well balanced and will not face drought issues in the hottest parts of Portugal!
Beautiful wild flower garden. Stay positive. All the best. Cheers from Lisbon.
That's great to hear and especially for the Algarve region that's been struggling with drought 🙏
hi there. portuguese follower here. i just stopped your video at 7:31 to warn you about thicks. Altough it's not normal, but my wife (we are both portuguese and used to country life) was bitten by a thick and she developed Lyme disease, and a year after, she is still has health issues. So, for you and all of the expats that might be watching this video, please be adviced: Altough only 20% of portuguese thicks can be Lyme carriers, it's a thing and you should take it seriouse, seriose, seriouzze... sorry( just to take the edge away i forgot how to spell seriuouse)....
Thanks! Dont worry im very aware of how dangerous they can be and how serious lymes disease is! Ticks really freak me out, but fortunately we havent been bitten in 5 years even though I have even found one in my bed! Maybe theres a few different types of ticks because the little red ones from our fields dont seem to want to bite humans... they love the dogs though!
Winter has been weird here in N.S. as well. We have several rain and high wind events. We just got through a rain and low wind event. Winter isn't like it used to be. But spring is springing and it will warm up by next week. Then we will start getting bug bit. There is always a downside. 🙂👍👍🇨🇦🌻🐰
Aah no im glad we dont have bug problems... we have fly problems instead! They dont bite like mosquitos but they drive you totally crazy :D
Gina should paint some flower boquets, Good practice.
Ask his neighbor joao if he's upset about the rainy year... For Portugal, these rains are gold fallen from the sky
Yes you are right, but we are just feeling a bit low as its been a tougher winter than what we were used to.
@@OKportugal think about the benefits it brings to your farm, to your neighboring farmers, to wild animals, plants... imagine how blooming it will be in the coming months. This rain only brings benefits. Soon there will be countless days of blue skies
Well, Portuguese farmer here, guessing that this gentleman here is far from european morocco he should have no water issues, however his fruit plants are probably all fucked because it was suposed to be hot at this time so flowers are not sprouting. Portugal does not have a water problem, the south of Portugal has a water problem. Heavy rain is good but at the right time...
@@9thEdits não é só o sul que tem problemas de água. Todo o país tem. A água que caiu, a que este pseudo agricultor se queixa, foi ouro para os reservatórios do país, foi uma primavera á antiga. Só foi pena não se ter estendido ao sul.
It always gets better watching you guys the second time around. All the best 👍 Ken don't give Gina a headache. haha Jim and Harriet
Haha, happy easter guys 😁👍
You probably answered this question every winter but what is wrong with the oranges are they sour?
They are lovely but we have hundreds of them and it impossible to eat them all! 😅
You want to be here in the U.K. bud, we’ve had a year of rain😭
Why do you think we’re all watching your videos, dreaming of moving to Portugal lol.
Haha, yes youre right... this is our 5th winter so i think we've forgotten how bad they were in the UK!

Summers are not much better😅

Remember the film Interview with a Vampire, when Brad Pitt went to the cinema to see blue sky? That’s your British subscribers watching your videos😆
@@leeboss373 Haha yes!
What you have found is a terrapin, here in Portugal we call them cágado. There are two different cágados in Portugal, the mediterranean and ridged carapace.
They hibernate in the winter and are now heading to lakes and still water areas.
Thanks! I always thought that if they swim they are turtles but it turns out that turtles dont have front feet and only have flippers... Terrapins are aquatic but dont have flippers :)
I’m a bit behind on the property videos because I want to watch them uninterrupted, but I do love them and it’s actually how I discovered this channel. Then I saw the farm life videos and really got into them. Thanks guys!
Hey thanks for watching! I'm going to be filming a lot more property videos for the channel (and not just private ones). I just need to try and find non raining days at the moment 😅🙏🌞
Guys I am in algarve region 30 minutes from Portimão, even here the cold persists just yesterday we had frozen rain and ice pellets falling from the heavens. But hopefully things wont be as dry in the summer time am i right?
Totally, the Algarve needs as much water as it can get too!
Algarve is having a serious 3 years long drought, thus, what you are having now is gold falling from the heavens.....
You need to realise that you are near the Saara desert, and from times to times, the weather in the Algarve is afected by that.
You should have take the turtle to your pond/dam. Those turtles ae the "house turtles", those we get at a pet store or at the fair. They need water to survive.
Yes I think it was a turtle. The large marateca dam is about 100 metres away from that place I put him and there was so much rain that there were lots of puddles everywhere.
I have fish in my dam so I didn't want to put him in there
Very nice place 🇵🇹 and I like that country but never been there but one day I maybe day ,I’m in the USA known but I may go to Portugal one day to visit cause that where my g grandma from. I was born in CV❤
Ticks don't care about hair. They care about humidity. They target the humid places on your body if they can reach it. If not they may bite you in other places too or just leave. But mostly they bite. You just got lucky I guess ;)
Hi Gina& Ken. Summers is on the way 🐣🐣💕💐
Your farm is so beautiful
Thanks Maureen! I cannot wait :)
When is your gaurgous sister coming back? She is beautiful love that long hair. I am South African so I appreciate beautifully women.
"Too blessed to be stressed". Happy Easter, even when it rains. The dogs hot weather is coming. You'll think on these days and pine for some relief from the heat. 😊
Yes youre right! I remember the feeling well... trying to find the cool side of the pillow at night! This year we have aircon though so i think itll be a bit different ;)
It´s a terrapin Ken he needs the water!! They are very common in Portugal.
I understand that long rainy days can be depressing, but we really need a lot of rain. For the last three years, Portugal has suffer from extreme dryness. Some farmers had to kill their animals because they couldn´t feed them. All this rain is a blessing although a bit demoralizing.
Not every day can be sunny you got have a little rain sometimes. Lite the log burner toasted marshmallows dipped in chocolate lekker
careful what you wish for here in Perth western Australia we've not had rain apart from 30mm since october 23 this has broken all records . it is very dry
We are near Bunbury and we have had some rain more than you guys. But Winter is coming 👌
I think we are moving out of a long drought spell here so it will be interesting to see what this summer looks like
Nice one guys, fields are looking great and should make a bumper harvest for Joachim and his sheep. Eddie and Mimo are looking well. 😄😄👍👍
Yes I think we will have another record harvest!!!
Happy Easter you two lovelies! Enjoyed the walk with you two today!❤❤
Thank you Michele 🙏❤️
Rain is good as it gets so hot and dry now n the summer..stop complaining
Love how it's cultivated. Beautiful 🌻🌻🌺🌺
I have to admit, I am sick of it... can't get anything done... my two teenage sons are on mid-term break... Next winter, I will not be sat in Portugal. We are next to the mountains and they are covered in snow... it's crazy!
Our first winter started in the estrela mountains about 800 metres up in a rental house. That was freezing!
Everyone seems to be saying that this has been an especially long, wet and cold one this year. I don't think it's normally like this.
I live near Ferreira do Zezere, it's feels like it's been raining for 6 months...I'm glad I have an indoor woodwork shop and my music room. Haven't been out in my garden for what seems ages....
It's been tough for sure but at least we are no longer classified as being in drought
I think you found a Terrapin, looking at the stripes on his legs which means he's a turtle. They don't grow too big and make nice wee pets in UK for kids. Never seen them here in Western Australia only huge long necked biting turtles that used to eat out young Marron in the dam (fresh water crays). Enjoy your weather before the heat hits you. 👍
Yes I thought so too as it looked like the ones in the pet stores
I agree with Gina, looking at (snooping around) other peoples houses is great fun! It's a great way to get fresh ideas for decorating too.
Absolutely!!
well.... here in Sweden we just got out from 6 month of darkness and snow/rain so everything is relative ))
No way I could do that! 😂
Here in New Jersey is cold and too much rain as well, normally by now I would go out without any coat but not this year, I guess is climate change on reverse.
I think its to do with a new El Nino weather cycle
What happened to the geese?
your farm is beautiful. If I was younger I'd move to Portugal. I been wondering what happen to the two little pine trees you planted when you first bought your little farm?
Sadly Joaquims sheep ate them!!! 😂
Happy happy Easter.. 🎉hope u guys did something fun🎉
Well so far its been very relaxing... roast dinner, snooze with the pets, toasty fire in the living room. :)
We've broken records here in Ontario for gloominess this winter. On the flipside, we've not had a lot of snow. Strange weather all over.
Oh no, hope the sunshine comes soon! We've just had about 2 weeks of very nice sunny weather thankfully! Was very gloomy here too!
It's been like this for as long as I can remember, and it's been many years.
A year with a lot of rain, followed by three or four little or even droughts.
I think it correlates with the El Niño weather phenomenon
Hi keep takin the d thru summer top up for winter dont forget k2 helps body absorb d.if you dont you could be flushing it out.
Think your taking more but ur not.
Thanks for the tips, we have these drops that have vit k2+d and another vit d supplement that we take.
Here I the UK it seems to be the wettest winter and spring ever, it feels like it hasn’t stopped raining. It’s hard to get any vegetables growing outside as it’s so waterlogged. Hope it will change soon.
We have a very hot week coming up...28C and sunny :)
All things are relative, i look at this and i say id love to have a winter like this, rather than our winters that are 5 months long and whose temperatures can be -30C or worse.
Northern ontario?
Oh! Ken I hope you did not interrupt the poor turtle/ tortoise romantic night with his girlfriend😂😍
Tortoise Interruptis 🐢 🤣❤️
Hi guys maybe u guys s small holiday come to Capetown 🎉😂.. ❤ glad u guys back on the farm nyc update.. maybe get those sun lamps etc sorry guys .. ❤😂🎉
I need to visit Cape Town again soon, its been about 7 years since I last went back!
@OKportugal Gina also must come .. next winter plan, so.sunny trips if possible . From sunny 😀south africa 🇿🇦
Very beautiful ❤
Someone prob said yellow daisy is maybe a Corn daisy ❤
Yes I think it is!!
Blessings 🫒🫒🫒🕊️
I think that was a Terrapin
Yes looking at that long whippy tail while I edited this made me think it was definitely a turtle
Well it won't be the driest year again. :D
Yes thankfully. We were in severe drought for a while and now it looks like things are recovering 🙏
I'm just up the road in Sao Vicente da Beira, indoors today again Ken, its got to end soon. I hope. Your remark about ticks crawling over you, waking you in the night made my ears prick up. You won't feel them, they are microscopic until they feed on blood, smallest I found on me was about three quarters maybe half the size of a pin head it was still black, they turn orange /brown as they get bigger full of blood. They can be seriously bad news, a customer of mine was really ill for two years in the UK. My partner had the classic bite with the red ring around it on her belly when we lived in Dorset, luckily our doctor knew what she was dealing with.
Don't knock the rain... I live in Melbourne Australia and we have had the driest February and March ever. 6mls in Feb and 2mls in March. So that may be what you are in for soon because Portugal and south eastern Australia seem to have a lot in common.
Thanks guys, we came for the sunny warm Portugal and we brought the British weather with us. At least Portugal will have plenty of water for when the summer starts and its so green.
I feel you pain Gina. Been raining and grey in the UK since Nov. I have been sick for 6 weeks now because of the lack of sun. Darn guys. Our Portugal property purchase is about to go through. Lets hope this trend doesnt prevail! 😅
Aah no, I hope you feel better soon!
@@OKportugal Believe me, years will come and you will cry for rain.
It's normal on that region 2 or 3 years long droughts from time to time....sooooo be happy and enjoy the rain!
Long droughts will happen at least once each decade.
@@Jesuscger We are coming out of the latest El Nino weather cycle which is causing all of this worldwide
Careful igot tick fever..
We have to be careful around this time of year

The yellow flower shrug are called broom or gorse. Lovely smell!
3,15 Those white flowers are Saramagos, I think. It is the name of the Portuguese Noble Prize of Literature.
Hey thanks for the info, very interesting! According to Google its known as Wild Radish too :)
I was visiting in January and couldn't believe how hot it was... Then I heard it was snowing in Madeira last week.
It was an awesome Christmas. Sunny, blue skies... but it turned soon after and has felt very dull and wet for a while. Its needed to get us out of drought, but now we are ready for the sun 🙏🌞😅
Olá Ken, I think the white flowers are called Saramago! And Gina, rain is also making you advance a lot on your drawings! Muito bem, boa semana

I am with you on the Sunny days. Here in Los Angeles we also had a very cold wet winter. Can’t wait for the summer.
I always thought you lived in Cape Town for some reason.
Grim up here in Caria as well. We are stuck in the caravan on our land until we start our house rebuild. Just want a break from it now !

Believe you me here in Ireland record rain levels farmers cannot get into fields with flooding keep on smiling its all we can do love your videos .

move to Portugal they said 365 days of sunshine they said hehehehe, it's been ok here in the uk, why don't you move back lol 😁😁😁😆
Never! 😵💫🤣👍
365 not true, but 330 in some regions might be true!
Ok if you’re a duck and have webbed feet🌧
Nope you could not pay me money to live in the UK or anywhere else
Was in Portugal last week 20 may for 5 day's lovely people as usual and very reasonable prices compared to Ireland.❤ Portugal.
Water is good because in the summer not raining that much.
Yes this is very important, but we are feeling a bit low without the sun 🌞🙏😅
So try to get some trouts with mouse traps in your garden.😁
A couple of years back i was finding crayfish walking around in our vineyard after some heavy rains!
I think it is a terrapin .turtel neads water and places to baak in the sun.
Yes it is a terrapin, here in Portugal we call them cágado. There are two different cágados in Portugal, the mediterranean and ridged carapace.
They hibernate in the winter and are now heading to lakes and still water areas.
I get fed up when the media keeps mentioning that "the bad weather is here" plus you can't live just from sunshine...just accept it !
When someone is feeling depressed or sad, the worst thing you can do is tell them to just accept it 😅
I'm glad that we are no longer in drought, but I'm getting cabin fever 🤣
@@OKportugal ok sorry to hear that,my mother been through depression most of her life, both of my parents were farmers so even thought too much rain can be disruptive or damaging,it was allways accepted as a natural cause we obviously have no control on,even when we lost our cherry harvests...
Kind regards !
Gina and Ken! Have you let the geese in the pond yet?? I bet they would love it?? A shaker of food could maybe bring them back to their enclosure? Also have you made nesting boxes for them? And let them sit on eggs??
Oh I just see you have rehomed geese😭
Yes by chance we met a lovely couple in the supermarket who watch our videos and have a flick of geese. We were considering rehoming them due to issues with them being aggressive to our chickens and our dogs and it just felt right.
I think you have the same garden beds There's a guy in the States called epic garden and he supplies them for different regions. Just got a great garden vlog his name's Kevin espiritu.🎉
