I love old steam locomotives. They make a distinct sound when they are running at full speed and it's a beautiful sound. I saw this beauty in her Freedom Train livery in March 1975 when it passed through my hometown. Then I got to tour the Freedom Train in Wichita, Kansas.
Neat! Thanks for posting it. A friend of mine was back-up engineer for this locomotive years ago when it was running on the Washington Central RR. I love watching it come through Pasco, WA and going down the Columbia River Gorge when it's here.
I road the segment between Spokane and Whitefish also. It was a great trip and I captured a lot of good still photos. I only wish I could find them again!
Великолепный ролик. Машина отлажена, дыма практически нет, топливо хорошее. Тепловоз идет в сплотке для подстраховки. На таком бы ретропоезде прокатиться
The gentleman riding the train at 3:53 mentions the Western Star. I saw the Western Star go through central Minnesota as a Burlington Northern passenger train back in 1970-71. I also got to see this train pass through central Minnesota as well!
They need to bring back the "domed" observation cars. The supperliner has something like it, but you can't see forward and aft. They don't have nearly the same "airy" feeling. Love the end of this vid the best by the way!
Nice to see the Milwaukee Super Dome. Appears to have a decent "ride". I had heard that Super Domes were known for "rough rides". Reason being extreme overall weight due to onboard diesel powered generators to run the massive air conditioning system (so much of the car is glass, producing a greenhouse effect). Six axles and very large outboard springs on the wheel trucks still were not enough to give a smooth ride.
Diesel used for dynamic braking. Also, when our girls are running mainlines, they provide backup in case of trouble. Cannot afford to block the rails, when you know another freighter is going to be coming along all too soon! Rules of operation must be followed.
I agree, would be sweet! But any idea of cost, time, and manpower to get one up and running? Wanna donate to the cause? And how often would they team them? UP has 2, and has doubleheaded them 4 (I think) times in 20 years or so. A sight to behold! Footage is available here, and no diesel in sight, lol. Otherwise, they run with a diesel, too. Still remains, got to follow the rules of the road. And BTW...tyvm Amesh, for this beautiful film!!!! Keep up the good work!
THIS IS AWSOME!!!!!! I love watching the daylight series in action. Ive seen the episodes of trains and locamotived on rfd tv and see the specials on this Train, But whats sad is a amtrak train is connected to it. IT kinda ruins the video to see a modern train in it. Awsome video though!!!!!!
all confuseing comments aside, is there any finer sight and sound than a working steam engine?, a loud round of applause for the people that make these trips possible at all, let alone saved from the scrapper's torch.
Why does the Daylight smoke so much less than other steam locomotives I've seen? I mean, it puts out less than 10% of steam and smoke I've seen come out of other locomotives. It kind of reminded me of the train they run around Disneyland, which uses bio-diesel.
I just came across a tape with sounds of this train from the 1984 world's fair. After listening to it I was inspired to do some research. What a beautiful machine! The world has one more rail enthusiast! Amazing videography and editing! What gear did you use?
WOW! Are you going to put together a video for sale? I'd love to have a copy of it if you do! As a professional video editor, that is one of the best videos I have seen of that train. Outstanding filming and editing!!!
and thats why the SP4449 needs a sister locomotive, It aint really gun to see a modern next to a steamer, so 2 steamers backing eachother up sounds like a better idea IMHO
@@usernotfound77666 Talk about a necro, but my statement still applies, if the brits can build a new loco of an old discontinued class, so can Americans, her scrapped sister can be rebuilt/replaced.
The Southern Pacific 4449 is a steam locomotive. The smoke can be visible only when the engineer (driver) pulls back on the throttle causing more oil to be burnt which makes more smoke usually. Depending on how steep the grade is can also determine how much smoke you see. The 4449 also is very powerful and doesn’t need to use as much oil as some other locomotives.
The doctor ordered the Daylight to cut down on smoking; ya know, health reasons. After all it is getting a little old. Did ya hear it breathing hard at 5:10; lung trouble.
Iainbotham This is some event connected with 4th July. Its a little disappointing to see a steam loco on a hot day as it obviously was when filming occurred, mainly the steam is invisible. Some steam could be seen at 8:00 as there must have been a cooler section.
BUT WHAT A NOSTALGIA!!! One of the videos that most marked my childhood!!
I had the supreme opportunity to view and photograph this beautiful locomotive, she is a work of art! 👏👏
Oh my god, this was the first video i had ever saw with 4449 in it, I fell in love with this train when I was a kid and it was thanks to this video
I’m in the same boat :)
What an incredible 10 minutes of nostalgia! Great compostion and camera angles ... just an all-around great video! Thanks
I rode the 4449 last weekend...it was just grand. This is by far the best 10 min. video on the 4449 I've ever seen. Stunning work Amesh2009.

for anyone wondering what the Amtrak locomotive is there for, its to provide power to the cars for lights an refrigeration.
I saw this on the 4449 homepage and am nothing short of amazed. This Train ride looks amazing. You did one HELL of a good job.

Excellent video!
I never knew that 4449 blew with super heated steam. I have always seen vids of saturated steam being used. Very interesting
sp 4449 is my favorite train
grat video of this excursion with fire works at the end as well
WOW!!!! NICE VIDEO AWESOME, THANK YOU
@SkipW it sure was a boring 4th of july this year, NO steam across America : (
Thanks very much. Outstanding.
This was when it was going to the 2009 train festival that I went to and it was amazing

Just when I thought railfanning couldn't get any better... I am speechless.
Awesome video!
What a finish to the video!!!!

ÓTIMO VIDEO!
Super video !!!!
Southern Pacific 4449 traveled on the Empire Builder and the Pere Marquette for the Train Festival.
Super video .
It must be hot as I see little or no steam from the whistle.
Cool Video
@salemcripple The Illinois Railway Museum acquired a former CB&Q dome car recently.

I like that there are no diesels on it so its pure steam
Sp 4449 going to Michigan
The whisle of the Daylight is the best
What does the engine burn, coal or oil and why is the AmTrack engine always with it?
4449 burns oil and the Amtrak was used for supplying electricity to the train
all confuseing comments aside, is there any finer sight and sound than a working steam engine?, a loud round of applause for the people that make these trips possible at all, let alone saved from the scrapper's torch.
2021?
Childhood video
I like the sound of the chuffing at 1:43
It is really very exciting and full of adventure to travel by steam locos,as these have real class and spirit of locomotion. Wish them real life.
+JOGESH KAVIRAJ i agree
Good photography of scenic route. Thanks
I love it this train
Awesome!

Actually 4449 had a sister the SP GS-4 4447 that got scrapped and used on the san jose peninsula corridor/commute
@@usernotfound77666 Talk about a necro, but my statement still applies, if the brits can build a new loco of an old discontinued class, so can Americans, her scrapped sister can be rebuilt/replaced.
4460 exists
I wonder why they have to ruin the look by adding that modern diesel ?
Great Video!! 6 dislikes i cant figure out.
Superb.
What kind of train is this I don't see the steam when it moves
YOU CAN BET ON IT THERE IS STEAM COMING OUT
It is a southern pacific G 9 Steam locomotive and you might not see steam when the regulator is off because the train is just rolling
OH MY GOODNESS ME HOW TRUE HOW TRUE
I think it's a bullet train

why don't they use the air horn that 4449 has anymore?
Not many people a fan of it
Locomotive made in Lima Ohio, where has all the American manufacturing gone and why?

What is the wagon bedroom, AMTRAK name? A locomotive auxiliary?
The Amtrak locomotive helps the steam locomotive pull the train.
@@rafe5556 clueless fella, thr genesis do nothing other than being a hotel generator and dynamic brake support
