I live in Wales and have a beautiful Huntaway who is just the most wonderful gorgeous dog that you could ever have - love her so much! She is the best 💕
I had a huntaway got him from Cromwell in 2000 unfortunately 2017 I had to make a hard decision to do what was right for him,I found that he was the best of everything and was a very loyal lad , and 8ve always compared him to a good old tractor Currently he's still in my life
I got my huntaway 23 years ago from the wellington pound. He was the most awesome dog ever. An old friend of mine ended up getting two of her own, not sure how he did. My dad got one of his own after mine passed. He would take her out for a couple of quick sprints and a swim every day. But he cant at the moment.... I'm glad I've taken over... We take a 1-2 hour walk together, plus we add nearly 1 hour of free range running to it. You can't have these as pets without realising how much they need to be out, stretching their legs. Great dogs though.
I'm in the States and am so impressed with this breed. I would hate to see this breed in pet homes as they are bred to work and need to work to be completely happy. I would especially hate to see them bred for the show ring. That would destroy these dogs. It looks like this breed it quite sound in structure. Breeders of show ring dogs would start changing their appearance, temperament, and soundness all to suit a fanciers idea of "improving" the breed. Keep them sound. Keep them working. And protect the breed.
Very, very proud Huntaway owner in the UK. Got him February 10th, ‘21. He’s such a lovely well natured dog, first dog that has chosen me as it’s master. Always been my parents being the masters. Lovely feeling. Nothing like it.

@@dawnwalton291 Happy to talk. I’ll go over the main things that my huntaway collie does that can be managed, and some that are inherent with the breed. He’s a very astute dog, his intelligence is sometimes a little too good. I find that mentally stimulating toys can be really enjoyable for them. Huntaways herd with their bark, and to put it lightly, my huntaway barks a fair bit. I’ve taught him the “speak” command to manage it, but sometimes nature over nurture is better so he still barks whenever it is naturally appropriate, but I can manage when he barks when my neighbours are around by using the command. Let me know what sort of questions you have and I’ll do my best to tell you about my personal experience. He’s almost 11 months now so I have had some time to learn with him
@@user-qm4zs5pl1h toby is neally 6 months.to be honest with me he is mainly a dream.i suffer with diebetes so cant always do the walks and my husband takes toby and r rescue terrier. He comes back and says bad on lead wont come back.with me behind heel
@@dawnwalton291 Heel is something you can practice anywhere at any time. The way I taught mine is by using treats in your dominant hand, lead in non-dominant hand. This will leave the treat sat by your side that the dog should naturally follow at. All you want to do is to just keep that treat there, and walk for a few seconds. Keep doing that, but in small intervals. No more than 5-10 minutes a day of training. After he’s started to grasp that when he heels for X amount of time, he will get the treat, and then you can start introducing the “heel” to the equation. This just solidifies the command. Practice it and apply it anywhere you can. E.g. practice for 5-10 minutes at home, and then when you go out - apply that practice to the situation and make sure to watch the response. 9/10 times it will work. It just takes repetition and a bit of time but it’ll work wonders
I have a NZ heading dog and crossed it with a part huntaway. The difference in character between the puppies is undeniable: Some take after their dad and some after their mom.
I kinda dont understand how Border Collies arent tough enough? For what? The weather? Mileage? Seems to me a BC can go forever and I cant really see how you get more endurance mixing in labs, rottweilers etc who all have worse endurance than a BC?
Border Collies are bred to gather and bring sheep to you, alot use strong eye and they dont bark, whereas a huntaway uses his noise to push sheep away, and the sheep will move off noise better than a dog that creeps along using eye!
It's not so much the breed but more the anatomy that matters with "toughness". A bc has smaller chest, shorter legs, smaller paws and less length in torso. The huntaway was bred for certain attributes like a larger chest for more oxygen, larger/tougher paws for harsh terrain, long legs and torso to cover more ground while running. The combination of these attributes result's in a dog that is very good at covering large distances while going up and down hills.
Borders are often what we call strong eye, sometimes it's real hard to drive a mob of 20 bulls weighing in at 600 kilo plus without push and snap, as in bark and bite, can't do it just on eye.
when a sheep gets stroppy a BC will back down, a Huntaway will get in it's face and not back down. We had a BC get a leg busted up by a ram once. He never used that front leg again even though the vet said it was fine. Still worked another 5-6 yrs after that. Close work in confined spaces a BC ain't tough enough.
They have 2 different jobs. One rounds them up, the other guides them. They are breeds that work well together. The hunterway has a better bark and does distance better. It also has an amazing attitude. It's a perfected mix of breeds, the main one being border collie.

I got my huntaway last year prior to him I had German shepherd's, I have to painfully admit the huntaway is by far the best of all my dogs

I hv chickens and he just lays and watches which I'm told not normal as want to herd
