Martin never was my cup of tea, but what's cool about him is the fact that he is absolutely snobbism-free artist. Considering dozens of companies trying to sell their stuff and forcing the people to care about their gear more than about their photography, he is a kind of person we really need today. Yeah, I am looking at you, Sony.
Have you head of Leica yet ;p But seriously all of the current players maintain a degree of hyperbole that just makes it hilarious to think about it. Nikon, Canon and Sony's commercials are packed full of hyperbole while Leica constantly brag about its past which is not created by the corporate entity but the artists who happen to use their camera.
Kai is more of a blogger than a photographer. I am yet to find his single image that can even partially grab my attention. Pro photographer would never let this horrid lighting setup happen.
Think about his perspective, though. He grew up when there was only film. He's experienced it and dealt with the worst parts, and he's glad to be done with it. But for us younger photographers, I think it's only fair that we educate ourselves about the film era, so that we can have some of the experiences he has had. He spent enough years with film to make whatever decision he wants about it, but we have to make our own too.
This interview was INCREDIBLY inspiring and encouraging for me? Like I've NEVER heard a big photographer say there's no point in shooting film nowadays. I go to a photobook shop and ALL I see is film photographers and no digital photographers. I love that he always talks about ideas more than technique.
I am so glad you are continuing to do reviews after your departure of Digital Rev! Your content of cameras has help me with my decisions! Keep up the good work!
Martin Parr seems like such a nice person to hang out with, his attitude towards not believing in holiday is just like what I think, why would you need a vacation when you do what you love.
I felt a little high at the end of this video, mainly because of Kai's buttery smooth calming voice combined with extra relaxedness of Martin Parr (who I never new before this video).
That was an ace interview, just the right tone AND Martin is such a chilled individual and very inspiring. It's that sense of permission he gives to just take whatever photos you want whenever & in 'P' mode! bonus. Keep up the good work Kai
5:19 Based I've always thought professional shoot in manual, I love how open he is about using P-mode, take advantage of it and use the energy to focus on telling story
This video was a huge step up. You really made it a better story, with music interruptions and consistency like Casy ? But with your own style... I love where your taking your skills. You are putting a lot of work and thought into this. Don't lose your sense of humor and attitude. All the very best.
Hasn't never used mirrorless camera, wins a photography award from a manufacturer of mirrorless cameras. *mint* I guess its made up by the fact he is an amazing photographer :)
Hey Kai, long term viewer here, first time commenting. This is the first interview that you did that made me really jealous of you! :) I thought initially that your follower questions would really suck (a bit naughty of me) but, actually the irreverent ones were some of the best! Keep up the good work! Cheers.
I met him once during his lecture in Hong Kong, he gave me a signed copy of his Hong Kong Parr. He wrote "Good eye." Such an honor to be compliment in room with over 200 professionals.
Kai, just wanted to say man, I really appreciate you sharing your love of photography and work methods...(methods of work? Let's go with that.) with us, and I personally want to thank you for doing cool shit and really cementing my new love of photography. Keep em coming mate! Cheers!
Commenting about going to school for photography. I work with many people, one of them took a 2 year course in photography at a community college, the other is a biologist with camera skills. The college guy told me he has the technical skill, but not the compositional skills of my fellow biologist (who learned the technical end on his own, while doing photography). So loved Martin's answer, just go out for 3 years, travel and do photography...
In another interview Parr was talking about one of his pleasure . That is spotting photographer's on their way down. He talked about photographers who have great success and become lazy. They stop trying because they don't have to. Comments in this interview, like, film being snobbish and I shoot on P, are telling. As he says his, "great success", the book "The last resort" was on film and a long time ago. Interesting.
Martin never was my cup of tea, but what's cool about him is the fact that he is absolutely snobbism-free artist. Considering dozens of companies trying to sell their stuff and forcing the people to care about their gear more than about their photography, he is a kind of person we really need today.

He can be snobbism free because his work is mainstream in street photography today, unfortunatelly. Circus.
This guy couldn't be bothered by camera gear, it's so refreshing.
Kai, please do more street photography
Alright
omg thanks you!!! i got $50 on steam
Kai what clip on mic was used in this video?
the candid frame is a good street photography channel (if you don't know it yet)
no trolley lady no street photo
Kai am I the only one that is bothered by two photographers in that horrible lighting ?
Chris Bates lolololol
Perhaps the unflattering, amateurish lighting was an homage to Martin's work?
Kai is more of a blogger than a photographer. I am yet to find his single image that can even partially grab my attention. Pro photographer would never let this horrid lighting setup happen.
This is not your tutorial channel I guess. :) Lighten up and enjoy the entertainment. Life is rough enough already.
Lighting on Kai looks ok. Priorities.....
The cinematography of this video is amazing! Even if it wasn't proposal... Martin on the bright side unleashing light to the dark side of Kai
Good interview, but that lighting was an act of cruelty.
"If I wanna get away from photographing, I go somewhere extraordinarily beautiful"
Wow.
This is easily my favourite interview with Martin I've seen, nice job Kai! :D
Love how grounded this guy is!
"Why would you shoot film?"
*hides film camera
If you're going to ditch your film gear because of one man's opinion, changes are you weren't shooting it for the right reasons to begin with :D
Think about his perspective, though. He grew up when there was only film. He's experienced it and dealt with the worst parts, and he's glad to be done with it. LOL i think 'bout that too
I agree with you 100%
Yep. This guy's stock just dropped with me. What a ridiculous thing to say -- sounding like a snob himself in saying so.
Martin Parr seems like a really chill guy. Gotta love his practical thinking.
enjoyed that bit coming from a pro about shooting film and p-mode
Me too, what a guy!
love your videos
Cheers!
Love your videos Kai, so glad your posting!

I felt a little high at the end of this video, mainly because of Kai's buttery smooth calming voice combined with extra relaxedness of Martin Parr (who I never new before this video).

This guy is good! (you too, Kai!)
Everyone loves Martin!
I cant stop laughing at the sequence starting at 9:14, loved the Q&A.

Martin has it right. He's found a job where people pay him to do his hobby. Nothing better then that.
"Why do you have holidays from the thing you love" I like that!
Nice interview btw.
