This mostly effects our flying options - looks like WotC might be trying to put the nix on us becoming flying mounts for our friends :(

Maybe it's also to avoid flyby creatures as druid options, which are quite problematic. Do the flying serpent, giant owl and pteranodon still remain as flyby beasts in 5.5 MM?
16:38 Great breakdown of the Lion’s stat block! One thing to note, though-when a Druid Wild Shapes, they keep their own Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. That means the Roar’s save DC isn’t based on the Lion’s Wisdom (+1), but the Druid’s own Wisdom modifier. So for a level 2 Druid with, say, 16 Wisdom (+3), the DC would be 8 + 2 (PB) + 3 (Wis) = 13, not 11. That makes the ability a bit stronger than it initially seems!
About the giant squid with the 5ft walking speed, I just want to point out that the lvl 10 moon druid subclass feature allows them to basically Misty Step + advantage on the next attack, that could be your repositionning tool when the battlefield calls for a Giant immobile squid!
And with the new moon druid scaling a giant squid can still be very viable at that level which is great! Would have still loved to see some sort of mulitattack feature like in Baldurs Gate
Something to consider: from level 7 on, a moon druid will have access to Font of Moonlight and Conjure Minor Elementals. If going purely for damage output, the main things to consider are probably going to be hit chance and quantity of attacks.
reminder that you keep your feats while wild shaped, so if you have the new version of the Mobile Feat, that's +10ft movement, great for any potential charge attackers.
@@DnDDeepDive not the only worthwhile part of it but they did invent a brand new way to make a SAD Eldritch Knight through multiclassing and I think if I finally get a chance to not-DM I know what my first 2024 rules character might be
Ultimately the problem for Moon Druids is that the Beasts have terrible Proficiency bonuses. The druid can't use their own proficiency bonus for the attacks so they are stuck with the same proficiency bonus as a level 4 character at level 18. Most beasts only have a Proficiency bonus of +2 for the entirety of the Druid's adventuring career. In our playtesting, we found the DM kind of ignoring the druid to deal with other threats because the druid was constantly missing with their attacks. I really wish they would let the druid substitute their own proficiency bonus on the to-hit roll.
The sad part is that they seem to be aware of the scaling issue, but only kinda adressed it with the AC change. CR 1/4 and CR 3 having same +to hit just means we are strong at start and then fall behind more and more. Counting on the DM to make special gear just for you seems a bit optimistic.
I’ve been waiting for a video on the MM before I made up my mind on Moon Druid. After this video I’ve officially moved on with out house ruling/buffing the sub-class. It’s only marginally better than Sea Druid at this point IMO. Still a Druid so it has that at least going for it 😞
I’m a 2024 Druid and we have substituted the beast to hit roll with my spell casting to hit. Takes into consideration proficiency and main stat and will scale like every other class.
I think it's worth remembering that on top of the smoother creature scaling. Moon druid has a lot of new features that adds damage, gives them AC worth looking at, Wis bonus to concentration, teleportation in wild shape, and the abilty to cast a few spells in wildshape. So yeah, those DPR numbers are going to be higher once those are added in. Also, a lot of features will probably be valued differently when you factor in the added dice from other sources. If we include precasting, that will mean Conjure Minor Elementals enters the equation, and multi-attack and pack tactics advantage mean a lot more.
I guess one thing that mitigates the scarcity and underwhelmingness of the high-CR beasts is that your THP and AC aren't tied to the beast. All you need is a magic item to boost your beast hit chance, like you suggested, and then the special abilities of low-CR beasts can still be relevant in combat at high levels. Oh, and the triceratops doesn't need longstrider to do the gore twice--just a use of moonlight step! Aso a convenient source of on-demand advantage, like you were talking about for another beast.
21:05 " between the brown bear and the polar bear in 2014 was very small actually and just made it feel like BEARLY an upgrade" HA! I see what you did there! Good one.

Yeah, I felt like this spell was custom made for some more mobile forms with charge attacks ❤️
The more I listen, the more certain I become that the two best "fixes" you could make for wild shape moving into higher CRs (especially for Moon Druids) are: 1. Allow the druid to use their own proficiency bonus instead of the beast's for attacks 2. Use the druid's spell save DC whenever a saving throw is necessary Otherwise, even with the improvements to a lot of the beasts, Wild Shape will still fall off at higher levels when enemy ACs continue to increase and their saving throws improve.
That is a good starting idea to increase the saving throws. Side note I just wish WoTC would not hard code the "creature of medium/large/huge" to allow for them growing larger. Something like "Creature of your size or lower" type of thing.

Hey love your dives, one thing i haven't seen anyone address and look at it when you do your moon druid build look at the background tavern brawler andthe danage reroll the unarmed atrike that applies to beast attacks i think and then the ability to use feats in wild shape description in the druid rules. Feats im looking at are crusher and piercer both which have an ability increase that would apply to your beast form and change the attack roll for many beasts. I haven't seen anyone address this aspect of the rule and i think i could change the way your looking at level progression. I really like the tavern brawler background it makes a big difference on averages when multile attacks are factored or font of moonlight is in play. Thanks for all your good work brother 🙏
Hello. The last time I was this early, the video was still called "#200". Hehe. I'm glad you put this out. This is genuinely helpful for all druids. Moon Druid good? I would like the beast forms to not suck.
28:36 The problem is that even if your DM homebrews an item that overrides the rule that Druids don’t benefit from magic items in wild shape form, it also has to have a significantly higher bonus to hit than similar items of the same rarity to keep up.
Hey Colby, great video once again! Loved the singing. I do think it would be remiss not to mention the elemental fury upgrades to wild shape damage that is included in the Druid’s base kit, which definitely scales up the damage of all creatures and I think makes it so that you don’t have to worry about the nerfs to the best in slot damage. Can’t wait for the 2024 Moon Druid build :)
Thanks for this video! The inconsistency of the buffs as Challenge Ratings rise and the continued lack of high CR Beasts is why I really wish they would have stuck to their guns regarding Wild Shape templates Also, just FYI, it sounds like you accidentally put two sets of intro/outro music.
When they skipped templates I was hoping they would have done some beast families like cats, dogs/wolves and bears from CR 1 to CR 6 similar to how they did dragons, demons etc. I bet there are a lot more of us thinking about running around as big cats clawing at things then elephant stomping, plus there are times when the big stompers won't fit corridors etc
If was was a DM and one of my players wanted to play a Druid, the two upgrades I would give them is allowing them to use their proficiency bonus on attack rolls instead of the beast’s and replacing the beast’s saving throw DC with the Druid’s spell save DC. I think both of these features makes sense balance wise and evens the playing field for most of the stat blocks.
As a 2024 current lvl 3 moon Druid I can confirm the lion is excellent, to the point where the dm is throwing extra stuff at me. Also I think you are severely underestimating the scorpion, in conjunction font of moonlight, and Minor Elementals it is insane, add grappler feat and it’s the GOAT.
it is important to also keep in mind we can wildshape more times, since we can use spell slots for it, and you should also consider what spell you will concentrate on a good lower level spell would be witchbolt potentially, using action to cast, bonus action to transform, then using your beast action on next turn and witchbolt bonus actions
33:55 i guess you could still do tail and then bite though right? Get the automatic prone first to give you advantage on the higher damage, automatic restraining bite attack? Or does it explicitly say that you can't target the same creature with both attacks in one turn?
The Allosaurus would actually be T-Rex’s older brother! They were around millions of years before Tyrannosaurus. In general during the Mesozoic Era (when dinosaurs were around), Dinosaurs tended to get bigger later into the era, with the largest dinos all being in the Cretaceous period, or right before the extinction of the dinosaurs, so Tyrannosaurus being from the Late Cretaceous was much larger than any Jurassic Theropod like Allosaurus
This video proves that wotc needs to bring some of you, native guys from youtube, to the ads. 'Cause in 40 minutes this made more interested in MM 2024 than any other oficial material in WotC chanel or beyond.
I do not normally watch all the way to the end (sorry about that), but I did this time and it was amazing! I didn’t know you son did the editing, and that outro was awesome 😂
Great and useful content as always. On a different note, I have a crazy build idea for you. Is there some way you can take advantage of or maximize the use of the new Jump spell? To reference an old Battletech term, how might characters be being “death from above”? Would leaping down on an enemy enhance damage at all? Would a monk’s ‘Slow Fall’ help? Or a warlock’s ‘other worldly leap’? Just a crazy idea that I thought might have some potential or you might enjoy. Imagine being able to leap all over the battlefield…
Isn’t this the updated Moonsinger video? 😂 Between this and the announcement of the new blade singer being in the Forgotten Realms book later this year, it seems like it might as well be! Happy 200, Colby!
33:19 I understand not being able to target the same target with tail attack after bite because of the way a crocodile’s anatomy is, but I do feel like the “Large or smaller” is a big nerf, I would HB to “Huge or smaller” at least or remove the restriction altogether, probably the former though.
The other great thing about ape is that maybe you can wear and sue some of your items... they are medium and essentially have hands... I'll also note they could hold a dagger and thus use defensive deulist... that said vs the giant wolf spier, I'd for sure take the tiny spider for infiltrations...
Playing a shepherd Druid (5.14) in a campaign right now where we encountered some lizardfolk shamans that could use conjure animals, but the animals could only be reptiles. So we fought velociraptors and pteranodons. Now my Druid has seen velociraptors and pteranodons.
Thanks, Colby! I've been waiting for this. I also would love to see a video on some Spell + Wildshape combos like the new Owl + Conjure Woodland Beings combo.
Colby have you thought about building some characters concepts specifically around using a spell or certain spells and how to work that spell to get the most out of it
Thanks for the hard work, Colby. I definitely have mixed feelings about the new beasts. It seems like WotC overlooked beasts for wildshape use. I'd have expected a bit more of a spread and obvious progression between CR levels in terms of hit chance and damage. But, it does look better than 2014, as you stated. Take the win! 😊
Really great video! Would you consider doing a video on the most interesting forms to transform into with true polymorph and/or the shape change spell, taking into account the new monster manual?
maybe this isn't full video material but if it's enough for like a short at least I'd love to see a bit of a discussion on some of the best options for Polymorph for allies and enemies!
Is there any reason the Giant Crocodile cannot tail whip first, prone the creature, and then bite with advantage? That is how crocodiles actually attack in real life normally.
Loving the PHB inserts in this one! Have you thought about using more of these in your character guides, too? e.g. for spells, traits, backgrounds, etc. Also: congrats to video #200!
Awesome video. Congrats on episode 200! Thanks for making these videos. Maybe just me an issue for me.... but I find the background music makes it a bit hard to focus on some of your videos. I could do without it or perhaps a middle option of lowering the volume of it a bit. No flying beasts?
Well good luck to your son towards graduating and I'll be looking forward toward a druid build. I think druid warlock is really strong by now with the changes to armor of agathys and maybe combining pact of the blade with wildshape?
dont know if someone else has commented this but creatures like the giant elk you mention along with giant eagle are now classified as celestials, and are now not available for wildshape/ polymorph. Saw it in pack tactics. Boo WOTC taking away my go to fast travel creature for my wizards polymorph
oh wow, that is kind big, Especially the Giant Eagle for non-moon druids... What are the best 'replacement' for flying beast at cr 1 now? I guess the Giant Vulture?
Ouch, that is rough for non-moon druid aerial transport. But in a way i'm fine, makes my player interract more with the world, like look for an airship transport, or maybe a renowmed beast trainer that rents gryphons, etc.
I have a little bit of a deja vu... Anyways if you are doing a moon druid build soon I would be super happy if you also talk about options for 2014 beast statblocks. I know that my DM would also allow me to use the old ones and I feel like thats the case for many people. Thanks for your videos always a big fan!
Never forget the Frilled Deathspitter from Planeshift: Ixalan. A Moon level 3 giant scorpion (kinda). And lvl4 for everyone else. Want to stack damage buffs? Have three attacks. And since all 5e printed material is totes legit in 2024, it works. Kinda crappy +5 to-hit, but whatever. Is it from the DnD team? No. Is it from WotC? Yes 😊
hey Colby, love this vid! In a recent video (The Celestial preview I think), Crawford said they were moving "sapient" giant animals to the Celestial category, including Giant Elk, Giant Eagle, and Giant Owl. I was just curious if this was reflected in your preview doc as you mentioned the elk and eagle in your vid?

Great and useful content as always. On a different note, I have a crazy build idea for you. Is there some way you can take advantage of or maximize the use of the new Jump spell? To reference an old Battletech term, how might characters be being “death from above”? Would leaping down on an enemy enhance damage at all? Would a monk’s ‘Slow Fall’ help? Or a warlock’s ‘other worldly leap’? Just a crazy idea that I thought might have some potential or you might enjoy. Imagine being able to leap all over the battlefield…
200 already 🎉 congratulations Colby 🎉
EXCITED! I've been waiting for this since the PHB dropped.
Gratz on #200!
Man Coby... I love your videos. I hope the algorithm rewards your thoughtful content.
Congrats on 200 videos!!
Thanks, Colby! I've been waiting for this. I also would love to see a video on some Spell + Wildshape combos like the new Owl + Conjure Woodland Beings combo.
First he eats all your granola bars, then he tries to remix the intro music! Send him back 🤣
Thank you for asking (and answering) the tough questions
Always quality - thanks for all this effort to help us all
Colby have you thought about building some characters concepts specifically around using a spell or certain spells and how to work that spell to get the most out of it
I like it, and hope to see more beasts in future books.
Thanks as always Colby
Thanks for the hard work, Colby. I definitely have mixed feelings about the new beasts. It seems like WotC overlooked beasts for wildshape use. I'd have expected a bit more of a spread and obvious progression between CR levels in terms of hit chance and damage. But, it does look better than 2014, as you stated. Take the win! 😊
Some regions of Toril has dinosaurs, and Eberron has a lot of places with them too, a halfling or lizard folk Druid has more access to them!
22:04 I do. Not a paleontologist but I still say it. My favorite dino is the T rex but I love Allosaurus
This is perfect. My next character is going to be a Moon druid so this is what I've been waiting for! ❤❤
Really great video!
Would you consider doing a video on the most interesting forms to transform into with true polymorph and/or the shape change spell, taking into account the new monster manual?
Congrat ! Episode 200 🎉🎉🎉
Bearly an upgrade 😅 that sneaky dad joke 🔥❤️
maybe this isn't full video material but if it's enough for like a short at least I'd love to see a bit of a discussion on some of the best options for Polymorph for allies and enemies!
Is there any reason the Giant Crocodile cannot tail whip first, prone the creature, and then bite with advantage? That is how crocodiles actually attack in real life normally.
Very apt that we have a new bladesinger UA just in time for the 200th episode
COME ON WOTC! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME ON MM EMBARGO DROP DAY!!!
Loving the PHB inserts in this one! Have you thought about using more of these in your character guides, too? e.g. for spells, traits, backgrounds, etc.
Also: congrats to video #200!
Colby my love this is the video i was waiting for, im about to start a campaing and most likely will be a moon druid, i needed this, thank you 🎉
Awesome video. Congrats on episode 200! Thanks for making these videos. Maybe just me an issue for me.... but I find the background music makes it a bit hard to focus on some of your videos. I could do without it or perhaps a middle option of lowering the volume of it a bit.
No flying beasts?
Was looking forward to this for a bit 🤓🤓
Well good luck to your son towards graduating and I'll be looking forward toward a druid build. I think druid warlock is really strong by now with the changes to armor of agathys and maybe combining pact of the blade with wildshape?
Thanks Colby you really help me pick up on things i would have missed !
6:36 Source="trust me bro" ;)
dont know if someone else has commented this but creatures like the giant elk you mention along with giant eagle are now classified as celestials, and are now not available for wildshape/ polymorph. Saw it in pack tactics. Boo WOTC taking away my go to fast travel creature for my wizards polymorph
Good catch! Will have to make an errata post
oh wow, that is kind big, Especially the Giant Eagle for non-moon druids... What are the best 'replacement' for flying beast at cr 1 now? I guess the Giant Vulture?
@ nope, it’s a monstrosity! Very limited to smaller beasts it looks like.
Ouch, that is rough for non-moon druid aerial transport.
But in a way i'm fine, makes my player interract more with the world, like look for an airship transport, or maybe a renowmed beast trainer that rents gryphons, etc.
Happy 200th vid Colby!
I think Giant Scorpion might scale interestingly given number of attacks with the extra dice druids can get in melee.
I've never played a druid before....this will help. Ty ty ❤❤❤
🎉🎉🎉 on 200 🎉🎉🎉
I have a little bit of a deja vu... Anyways if you are doing a moon druid build soon I would be super happy if you also talk about options for 2014 beast statblocks. I know that my DM would also allow me to use the old ones and I feel like thats the case for many people. Thanks for your videos always a big fan!
Congrats on 200!!!🎉
Never forget the Frilled Deathspitter from Planeshift: Ixalan.
Yes 😊
these kinds of beasts make the speedy feat SUPER tempting with all the chargers. free disengage and more speed...
hey Colby, love this vid!
Great video as always. Much love and have a most excellent week.
Colby: What is the most important part of 2024 MM?
Me: POISON!!!! Poison resistance! Poison immunity!!! ♥️
Happy 200th !
You're doing a really great job and i hope you keep going for a while o7
