When i first heard this song i cried because this is my absolute favorite Greek myth. And it was NPH singing live on stage, with beautiful scrim work, which added to the beauty
my friend who i saw this with told me she knew which song would be my favorite, but she wouldnt tell me which one it was, when we went to see it and she saw me realize that this song was my favorite myth she said "this one" *crying like a baby*
I'm was brought here because I love hedwig and the angry inch. I was happy when I saw it being shown in sex education. Because this show is not a new show it's been around. For a good amount of time.
Going through the comments and reading arguments about who sang it better, people completely missing the point. This song was my very first connection to a better understanding of and acceptance of myself. Doesn't matter how it was sung still makes me highly emotional every time I hear it. Maybe its because
When the earth was still flat, And clouds made of fire, And mountains stretched up to the sky, Sometimes higher, Folks roamed the earth Like big rolling kegs. They had two sets of arms. They had two sets of legs. They had two faces peering Out of one giant head So they could watch all around them As they talked; while they read. And they never knew nothing of love. It was before the origin of love. The origin of love (origin of love) Now there was three sexes then, One that looked like two men Glued up back to back, They called the children of the sun. And similar in shape and girth Was the children of the earth. They looked like two girls Rolled up in one. And the children of the moon Looked like a fork shoved on a spoon. They was part sun, part earth, Part daughter, part son. Aaahhh... The origin of love. Now the gods grew quite scared Of our strength and defiance And Thor said, "I'm gonna kill them all With my hammer, Like I killed the giants." But Zeus said, "No, You better let me Use my lightning, like scissors, Like I cut the legs off the whales, Dinosaurs into lizards." And then he grabbed up some bolts He let out a laugh, Said, "I'll split them right down the middle. Gonna cut them right up in half." And then storm clouds gathered above Into great balls of fire And then fire shot down From the sky in bolts Like shining blades Of a knife. And it ripped Right through the flesh Of the children of the sun And the moon And the earth. And some Indian god Sewed the wound up to a hole, Pulled it round to our belly To remind us the price we pay. And Osiris and the gods of the Nile Gathered up a big storm To blow a hurricane, To scatter us away, In a flood of wind and rain, A sea of tidal waves, To wash us all away, And if we don't behave They'll cut us down again And we'll be hopping around on one foot, Looking through one eye. The last time I saw you We'd just split in two. You was looking at me. I was looking at you. You had a way so familiar, But I could not recognize, Cause you had blood on your face; I had blood in my eyes. But I could swear by your expression That the pain down in your soul Was the same as the one down in mine. That's the pain, That cuts a straight line Down through the heart; We called it love. We wrapped our arms around each other, Tried to shove ourselves back together. We was making love, Making love. It was a cold dark evening, Such a long time ago, When by the mighty hand of Jove, It was a sad story How we became Lonely two-legged creatures, The story The origin of love. That's the origin of love. Oh yeah. The origin of love. The origin of love. The origin of love.
Lmao, you guys are complaining he doesn't sound like JCM, but then if he did sound more like him, I'm sure you'd be like, OMG HE'S TRYING TO BE JCM HE SHOULD JUST BE HIMSELF lol
I love both versions. I feel like I play em back to back on repeat. I just love the song so much, the difference in vocals is nice I find. I also think Neil Patrick Harris was a good pic for the broadway cast recording.
This movie brings back memories of a confused teenager on the road. I first saw it a couple decades ago and still get a rush from it today! I would love to have the opportunity to see it as a play.
NPH simply rocks. Can't quite decide between his version of OoL or JCM's. BEYOND excited to go see Darren in 60 days now... He's my favorite person ever and he is ROCKING Hedwig.
I am so getting this soundtrack. I've been looking for this! Origin of Love is my favorite song in the show. Thank you! Neil did way better than I expected.
I know many people aren't happy with Neil's performance, but I've listened to other Hedwig recordings and this one's the most flashy. It's got a lot of showmanship, which I like. For the same reason I bought the broadway recording of Matilda, rather than the West End version, It's a little more intense and you can picture it better, which is what, in my opinion, a good recording needs. Especially with music theatre
I can’t even imagine what went through Stephen Trask’s mind when he wrote this but he really outdid himself! This from a songwriting perspective is the BEST song in the show. With Sugar Daddy and Long Grift coming right behind them
When I watched the movie I fell in love with it, especially this song was my favorite one from the movie, Neil is an amazing actor I love him in HIMYM, but now I want to see him on stage in this project, the version it's different but still great, Neil made an excellent work with the songs!!!
How are there no recent comments on this video? This is the only version I can find that actually has the ending on it. The original clip is missing the whole third verse. NPH was a perfect choice for this part. He sounds amazing on this song. It’s a song about love and Earth and sexuality and gender and everything that we should be focusing on in this upcoming generation.
Corwin-if you haven't listened to any of the original off-Broadway soundtrack or watched the 2001 movie--you should. The music is AMAZING!! The movie is now one of my top 10 favs. I don't know how I missed it when it first was released. I want the movie soundtrack but the only one available is being sold for $55 (!!!!!) on amazon (from a private distributor). Wish it would be released! I will also be purchasing the Broadway soundtrack with Neil, too. Have tickets to see him August 7th and can't wait!!!!
im partially happy that this musical is getting recognition because it's truly amazing but im also partially annoyed because recently people have only discovered it thanks to a popular netflix series. regardless of why people are here, this is a fantastic musical and movie, both JCM and NPH are truly amazing actors!! Hedwig will live on forever!

NPH gave a great performance on the stage. But John Cameron Mitchell's voice is definitely more passionate. NPH does seem to articulate every word. When JCM sings the line: "the pain down in your soul was the same as the one down in mine," it always gives me chills. It's so moving & perfect. Even though I loved NPH live, his recorded singing does not translate as well. It's a bit bland. I'll stick w/ the original JCM recording of Hedwig.
Hmm think I prefer JCM but still good. You should hear andrew rannells singing it, he is taking over from NPH when he finishes, I really liked his version
I disagree with the general opinion I much prefer nph's version to jcm's. Perhaps it's because I've never seen jcm live (but have seen nph) but the movie version to me is anticlimactic
It's the arrangements. Agreed that studio recordings will be flatter, but I thought the studio version of the original held up beautifully. This not so much.
Petra M agreed, the studio version of JCM sounds just amazing and captures me and makes me imagine the story just like the movie, this not so much, it's not bad at all, great rendition and version by NPH who I love and admire, but has nothing on JCM's way of transmitting the song and feeling since the beginning... and I agree, NPH's version at the beginning specially sounds too broadway-ee compared to the original.
Good choice of actor to play the part, only Neil needs to connect a bit more with the song, particularly towards the end. I don't feel the emotion at the end like I do with Mitchell
JCM definitely is better but a valiant effort. I'm not crazy about the production. Some of the layers lack depth. Very tinny. The background voices definitely help him out. He absolutely articulates too much and lacks that richness and attitude of the original. Even the guitar has some issues but all in all, it's good. There's a certain growl he should try to develop. More Mick Jagger and Bowie, less Rent. This type of singing is one of the reasons I've never had a real connection to Broadway as I do with rock and pop music.
I don't care about which version is what , the lyrics of this song always gets into me !!
though it stupid right ? I mean Aristophanes' speech in Plato's Symposium ? I love to think it's true :*
When i first heard this song i cried because this is my absolute favorite Greek myth. And it was NPH singing live on stage, with beautiful scrim work, which added to the beauty

I was looking for this song today because my husband and I cherish it so much and I found Neil Patrick's voice to enjoy.
That echo on “fire” is so beautiful...
Every time I listen to it I rewind to that point haha
Absolutely amazing!

Neil is so beautiful. Amazing performance. 💜🥰👏🏼
Without a doubt the most original song in the show! John Cameron Mitchell and Steven Trask are geniuses

Favorite version of how love was created! Beautiful song ❤
Omg I wish me a drag feature of Neil Patrick and John barrowman !
Neil Patrick Harris!!! magnífico ...simplemente lo amo!!!
Love the instrumentation in this version.
