  • Want to get into 3D Printing but don't have much money to spend? There are a lot of low cost 3D Printers now available but not many are very good!
In this video I share with you my choices for 3D Printers $350 USD or under that actually work pretty good, and would be a great start into 3D Printing.
These machines are either those that have been tested here on Maker's Muse - or come highly recommended by others in the 3D Printing community.
IMPORTANT! This video is purely my opinion based on my experience - you are responsible for your own decisions!
This video has not been sponsored or affected in any way by any suppliers or manufacturers. The decision to include or exclude any machines from this video is my own. Links to the machines are listed below as well as the communities and reviews mentioned in the video - none have tracking or affiliates attached. Happy printing!

I have the MP Select Mini, and I can say that it is definitely worth the price. I only have issues printing in ABS, because the print bed requires masking tape. With ABS's tendency to shrink/warp while printing, the tape can be peeled off of the platform, resulting in some bad bottoms of ABS prints. However, printing in PLA or any other material has proved incredibly successful and I highly recommend this machine.

I just recently found your channel and I have to say, well done. I am exceptionally thankful for this video, since I was in search of a 3D printer for my DND group, but didn't want to drop too much money. Went with the Cetus3D MKII with the heated building plate so I wouldn't limit my filament options. I realistically have no idea what I'm getting into, but I appreciate wholeheartedly the amount of effort you put into your reviews. Thank you for everything and wish me luck.

The Wanhao i3 is initially a tricky machine to use, but the community support for it is really awesome. I have solved almost all of my problems with the printer by asking co-owners of the machine in the group. After making some suggested mods, the print quality was almost like that of my original Prusa i3 Mk2. :)

I have a anet 8a yeah it took me a month and 147.00 worth of parts to get it to run like a champ, but honestly it was worth it. It taught me allot more than I wished for. I 3d printed new carriages, fan shrouds, and I only paid 140 dollars for the printer. So all together I have around 287 in a machine that can fine print at a 78 mm/s speed. (It can go faster but it starts skipping so I usually print at 55 mm/s in abs.) A note worth mentioning on the anet. Build the heated bed to the left side, build a thermal box, get a 3dv6 heat tip, buy a 3m screw kit,buy a bed sheet, print anti z wobble arms, and more important print everything in the beginning in ABS!! You will go to printing ABS eventually with the anet 8 and it is worth it.

I backed the Cetus ( extended ) partly because of your review and that it was also designed/built by teirtime. So i knew i was backing a machine that was built by people who had a proven history in actually building machines.
i could not be happier with it. So far I haven't had a failed print ( touch wood ) out of the 8 300 mm prints I have done so far and in fact when the power plug came out by accident I was happy the resume feature worked well.

I'm a Cetus Kickstarter backer, and have had quite a few problems with it. I think they must have made changes from the pre-release to what Cetus now have started calling the prototype printers. Don't get me wrong, it's a great design, and I think Cetus will resolve the issues. It's not quite there yet.
Read through the Cetus forum, and as you do, recall how relatively few printers they have send out so far.
Mine came with bent motor mount (which many others also did), and Z axis out of alignment. The print head that rubs against already printed parts (some have reported it miss steps and ruined a print because of this), and there are print artifacts on the sides and corners (which also is a common problem).
I've now mine taking it apart in order to re-assemble it. This time with thread lock compound, and properly squared up axis. I'll also add an community developed brace to help stiffen up the Z axis. Hopefully that will improve the print quality a little.
Most surprisingly though is the slicer issues. Especially on slightly curved top surfaces, and at times even on flat surfaces. At times, the parts are left with gabs and holes in the top layer. It looks like under extrusion. That's when printing with Cetus filament and with the settings supplied by Cetus in the slicer software.
So yeah, keep an eye on Cetus, but wait till the next generation is out before you buy.

Another well done and very informative video - thanks so much and keep them coming!
I did try to put together a Delta Kossel from a kit and never got it running properly, every conceivable problem happened. And after building it with no documentation, no firmware, and highly questionable motherboard and motor drivers (there were plenty of parts I had to scrap from the kit and source on my own), well over a hundred frustrating hours of configuration and tuning, posting questions on active forums with zero responses, this printer is currently in a closet, having never produced even a sample cube. I have built several Prusa-ish Cartesian style printers and had them running like a dream. the Kossel, however, is another story altogether, and I wonder if I'll ever get it working.

I ended up getting the Kogan "Balco" Wanhao i3 clone - and I love it - my sister also ended up purchasing one.
However, after about 1 week's run time the power connectors on the mainboard burnt out. This seems to be a pretty common issue on the Wanhao Duplicator i3 v2.1.
The power plug just does not support the current that is required.
We went separate routes on this, I fixed mine myself by replacing the power connector with an XT60 connector, my sister instead claimed a warranty repair.
The warranty repair was local, and only took a day, and they replaced the mainboard and beefed up the power connection and cabling.
So while it was a little disappointing, the support was amazing, and this is my daily printer, clocking over 40 days straight of printing. It's a beast!

I got the Maker Select v2 last year around Christmas. This was my first 3D printer and I was really impressed with the quality of the prints compared to various pictures of printed items I have seen. Unfortunately the power supply blew after a month so I returned it. Fortunately, I stepped up to the Maker Select Plus and it seems to absolutely worth the extra $70 US dollars.

I bought the Balco 3D printer 2 weeks ago from Dicksmith online and I haven't been able to stop myself printing with it. I am so impressed by the print quality of the machine, especially since I have only had one failed print. I am just barely getting into the world of 3D printing via a college course in AutoCAD and I am now seriously contemplating getting a printer myself. I looked up the Maker Select you mentioned here (as well as the Plus version) and I'm thinking that looks like a pretty good starter unit. Looks like it is capable of printing a pretty wide variety of plastics and it comes with a heated bed. Might need to build an enclosure for it to keep it up to temp here in the cold, wet Pacific NW...but that's do-able.

Hi mate, thanks so much for all the amazing 3D printer content! I've been saving for a 3D printer so have been doing as much research as possible on both printers and printing.
In your video the only kit you recommend is the Tronxy X1. I've been considering a Reprap Prusa i3 kit, as it seems to be a good mix of quality, print size and price. Would you say the Prusa i3 is worth it or should I stay away from them? I'm hoping to use the printer for personal hobbyist projects and from what I've seen once you calibrate the printer properly it can produce nice quality objects.
Thanks again for all the videos, they've been an amazing introduction into the world of 3D printing for me.

I'd been eyeing 3D printers for a number of years, and FINALLY pulled the trigger a week and a half ago, and ordered one of the MP Select Mini printers. Absolutely love it!
While I was waiting for it to get delivered, I did a bit of pre-reading, and ensuring I had a solid enough understanding of 3D printing before tackling my first print. However, all of that was essentially unnecessary as it came pretty well completely ready to print OOB. I leveled the bed, contacted MP support to get the sample .gcode files (mine were missing on my included SD card), and hit PRINT. 3 hours later, I had an adorable cat printed on the bed!
Fast forward a week and a half, and I've printed almost an entire roll's worth of PLA, and even designed, sliced, and printed a few 3D models of my own, via models built in Sketchup and sliced in Cura.
For a 3D printer newbie like myself, it has been a blast! I've run into a few QC issues on my specific printer, however, but with MP's solid customer support, I'm not worried in case it ends up breaking on me within the next year (as long as its warranty holds out).

Hi Angus, outstanding video. I've been watching a few of your features for the last few days. I'm about to get into 3D printing, but I do have a lot of experience in other technical hobbies. After watching some of your reviews, including this one, I'm actually leaning towards a Creality Ender 3 or a QIDI Tech X-One2. I'll be printing TPU 99% of the time and the parts are generally going to be no larger than a GoPro case. In fact, I just measured some of the parts I want to print and they all fit more than enough in a 120mm print area. Do you think those are a good choice, or am I better off with a printer from this video, for TPU? To give you an idea, my original choice was going to be a PRUSA i3 MK3. But it would take me a bit longer to get started if I go for that one. With the other two, I could get started as quickly at tomorrow. Thanks, Danny

I've been very happy with the Da Vinci Mini (wireless version, even though I never use that either) that we got for Christmas ($269 US). While it only uses proprietary "chipped" PLA filament, the cost of that is pretty reasonable (200m for $27 which lasts me about a month) and it can make some beautiful prints (like Amaochan's pangolin from Thingiverse). Always impressed with how strong and light weight the created prints are, as long as you're printing a good design. Reasonably good if somewhat basic slicer software provided, which you aren't required to use. I hope that they'll release a flexible filament for it at some point (to enable making things like phone cases). Base price includes everything needed to get started.

Sadly as one of those who backed the Tiko and is highly unlikely to see any return on my pledge (I'm sat in Batch 4 which I believe should have been the next batch shipped) I can feel for anyone who had their hopes pinned on it to get them into the hobby. Luckily I managed to get a great deal on a Wanhao i3 V2 while I was stuck in limbo waiting on the Tiko and used it to cut me teeth on 3D printing.
Two years after backing the Tiko and still with no sign of it in sight, I (some might say foolishly) decided to back the Cetus. I plumped for the extended gantry version and the little beauty has been printing its socks off non-stop, 24/7 for the past 3 weeks without issue. The only mod I have done with it was to add a LokBuild surface to the spare aluminium print plate I ordered when pledging and now I'm 100% warp free with intricate builds printing without rafts and no failed prints.
So for my two pennies worth, I'd definitely endorse both the Cetus and the Wanhao i3.

Wow thank you. I am 24 days from starting my first kickstarter which is around printing the product rather than the traditional methods. My main worry was the time to print forcing me to consider a print farm but to have all Prusa's with their current wait time scared me as well as the cost. This option from Kogan may work. I'll order one and test it out. Thanks.

In 2020 just getting into the game ... bought the Wanhao as a Monoprice Maker Select v2 .... Out of the box IT WOULD NOT WORK ... the z axis stopped so high that the bed screws fell off tryng to adjust.... But I'm fairly mechanically apt, and own a drill .... moved the z limit switch down about a centimeter below it's adjustment height.... Followed your advice and got Prusa Slicer rather than what came with it.
After a few false starts began getting usable prints out of it. Decided I hated the bed, got a glass plate. At first could never get adhesion.... finally figured out that its getting the plate literally squeaky clean (clean paper towel and liberal alcohol) and setting the first layer near the top temp for the PLA and the bed temp up around 80 ... then come down to low to midrange for the PLA and a normal 60 for the bed for the rest.
By second week I had printed the adjustable z-axis limit switch controller.and the bracing kits. The thirdi nstalled the mosfet kit. Oh I worry much about th the wires flexing where they join the bed so with a piece of scrap aluminum and zip ties fixed the cable harness so that the wires wre not flexing where they joined the bed. Fin fact used a LOT of zip ties to makes sure the wires wouldn't flex or catch when I move the printer( there are two wire chains ... but they frequently worked off the top link ... until I used the zip ties to re-enforce it.
I'm fairly pleased overall with the Wanhao ... but couldn't in good conscience recommend it to someone who I knew had (and trusted) their mechanical and electrica; savvy. But it seems from what I've read that's likely true of all lower end printers. The possibility of wires breaking and possibly shorting that carry ten amps is no joke ... that'll lite anything flamable very fast ...quite possibly before a fuse trips. I've also read of the thermal runaway situation .... with the borosilicate glass over the bed, I'm not that worried about that, ut without it I would.
I'm about to try to get octoprint going and have a bl-touch I'll try to install some soon weekend.
Just reporting that still in 2020 there are problems with the Wanhao's ... though as said, after sorting it out, I much like using it (but I'm stiill a newb). And to say thanks, Angus. Your vids have are both delightful and much informative.

Have you ever built a printer (say a clone of something open sourced) from scratch? By this I mean buying all parts direct from suppliers. I've been looking into it and it seems you can get most of the essential parts for about 80 AUD. What are your thoughts on this? Worth it?

    Looking for some advice.
I occasionally have to match handles on customers tennis rackets. Say they have 1 handle/grip that just feels better than the others. Yes, some players (me included) can feel the slightest difference between grips and the racket just doesn't feel right. For me to replicate this perfect grip on all their rackets I have to take a mold and mess about for about 4 hours just for 1 grip. And there is no guarantee I will nail it as the epoxy foam can misform.
So, is there a cheapish (I do this 3 or 4 times a year, so I am not going to be earning from it.) printer out there, and is there an "ink" that is as light as 8Kg epoxy foam? The foam has to be very light like balsa wood. Grams matter
Hope the community can point me in the right direction.

IMPORTANT QUESTION MAKER'S MUSE!!! Have you used your original UP Mini on the latest windows 10 update? Windows is trying to add custom 3d printing software and drivers for most printers. However, i believe that the windows default 3d printing drivers is messing with my UP Mini drivers and overriding the UP's driver and it is causing my printer to basically not work at all and act extremely strange. I was wondering if you could check into this and see if you can find a way to fix it, if it is happening to you too. I will keep getting USB malfunctions until this is fixed. I really hope you see this.

All of these machines have a 0.4mm nozzle and offer similar precision. I would say the Cetus appears to cope with complex shapes better (as demonstrated with the complex lattice) however the software does not offer as much control when it comes to support material.

You missed out the Kossel Mini :(. It's £199 but does come as a kit however I'm 14 and I managed to assemble the entire thing and all the electronics (ramps, Arduino, ect) on my own. The print volume is decent and it has a heated bed that I've been able to get up to around 110*C. It uses a bowden extruder and I've been able to get some immaculate prints out of it, including torture cubes. The only catch is lack of customer support, although emailing the guys (to get the manual...) was really easy.
