Ive actually been trying to find your channel for awhile Chris, I loved the sea of silt video but I couldn't remember what channel it was on. Thanks to you both for putting this stuff out there!
Let's be real here: If someone from Dark Sun got to Ravenloft, they'd be dead from overhydration within 48 hours... and Strahd would be seen as straight-up benevolent.
UA-cam will probably hide this comment for awhile, but thank you for the Dark Sun lore video. Dark Sun has quickly become probably one of if not my favorite official D&D setting, as well as a major influence on me. I love the land of Athas. I love the Cracked, Dying Red Sun, the Sorcerer-Kings, the Dragon's and all of that. I'm super excited for the future videos on this as well! I find the possibility of lives on the moons could be very interesting for a homebrew campaign set on one of them as well. With a unique take on Moon Elves, perhaps.
The thing I love about the setting is that it is a Halfling-only campaign, the only race you can pick is Halfling or some variant of mutant Dire-Halfling.
So as Conan Low fantasy fans, my Dad bought me books that appealed to his love of bodybuilding and Masculinity. The Cover of the Verdant passage instantaneously drew me in and I've read that book (the First Novel in the Dark Sun Prism Pentad) several times. Now as the modern forms of entertainment get all colorful and furry...I have gone back to the Conan-esque sensibilities and into Grimdark Low fantasy. Dark Sun will be my setting (for my D&D5e games) and Death a constant. This channel directly rekindled my love of these worlds and Lore. Thank you for your awesome and content rich videos!
Bodybuilding isn't so much as masculinity, but vanity - the same as the overly buff & busty women in this fantasy genre. Realistically, survivors of tough landscapes are often slim & sinewy, having to work hard for the very little food & water they can get. All the extra muscle just makes you tired & weak in comparison.
Yyyyeeaahh bbabbiii!! Dark Sun videos!!! I just spent the last 9 months creating a Dark Sun campaign for my friends! We havnt had a chance to start it up yet, but i had SO MUCH FUN making the campaign all on its own. Dark Sun is easily one of the top 3 settings for any D&D campaign
Love all the literary references and I would definitely try to build a John Carter character in the Dark Sun setting. The Barsoom series is seriously under appreciated in Sci-fi circles these days. I am greatly looking forward to this series!
Yes UA-cam has been actively acting out lately, I'm surprised even these fantasy videos are being censored/suppressed...this is harmless compared to the direction they wana go!!!
My personal favorite d&d campaign ever, it's just so much more interesting to me than the more traditional fantasy settings you usually see in the games. If only we could get a new game based on the setting.
Fantastic introduction to the Dark Sun setting! I love what you've done with your Dark Sun Skyrim mod. Thank you for the shout out to Rise of the Veiled Alliance and my other Dark Sun adventures-a lot of love went into them.
Great video, I was very glad to see you followed up and made the Dark Sun content. I am looking forward to more videos on this setting as it is one of my all time favorites.
Dark Sun might be my favourite! I recently found your channel and pretty much binged all of your Conan content. Love the channel, keep up the awesome work my man!
interesting highly intriguing! Personally, the D&D universe is confusing, stereotyped and even so I am amazed at its particular cosmology and narrative development! I love your channel, especially sword & sorcery topics! Really ingenious comparative, analytical and thoughtful introduction to this desolate, brutal and barbaric realm! Keep rolling!
Confusing maybe but I think stereotyped is a little unfair. Especially with some of the original settings, while they may seem cliche today they weren't nearly as overdone in the 70s/80s as they are today.
@@KS-PNW 🤔 Thats , actully a good point!! And you know what? Your right! The 70s and 80s was quite am interactive revolution period of the Fantasy Tropics! I criticize More the generalization of the aspects, and yet i love how they ways are implemented in diferents perspectives. Like for example: the Witcher, Discworld, Spiderwick, ect
Confusing, eh? Take a look at Planescape. The center of the multiverse is... wherever you happen to be. Or it could be that torus spinning atop an infinitely tall spire. One of the two, I'm pretty sure.
Dark Sun has fascinated me ever since I started playing 2nd edition. I have the second boxed set and have unfortunately couldn’t find a steady group to play. Players were turned off by psionics and the grim dark miserable setting. I still live it to death and have tried to read any bit of lore I can find. Cannibal halflings ftw!
A normal T-Rex is bad enough, but an Athasian T-Rex is psychic. That means that when you freeze up, taking Jurassic Park's advice that "their sight is based on movement", not only can it see you perfectly well with its eyes, but it can read your mind and think to itself "LOLOLOLOLOL What bad advice, LMFAO!"
As a student of history, I feel it isn't civilization itself that is corruptive, but rather a civilization's failure to root out, punish, and destroy corruption that is often its downfall. Dark Sun is a good example, as it was in failing to stop the use of corruptive, destructive magic that ultimately caused the calamity that brought about its current state. If such evil was exterminated on sight and hunted down wherever it might try to hide back then, the world of Dark Sun would be a better place.
If youre doing DnD settings im going to personally request that you may please do my favorite (and one of if not arguably the best official dnd setting) Mystara!
I wanna be a dwagon king when I grow up. Like in the song "puff the magic dwagon king lived on Athas and ate everything"! But mostly I just want to eat halflings. Mostly. ?;- )
There should be an all races one already on the channel, but it depends on the demand at the time from donators and people who pay me. Right now those people more like Conan, but I suppose the next video I’d do in this series would be “All Sorcerer Kings in Dark Sun”
I like the idea of the Wraiths being like Force Ghosts: dedication to a cause keeping them attached to the mortal coil. They can function as enemies or guides like Obi Wan Kenobi or even just neutral NPCs the players have to negotiate or bargain with to accomplish a task. Much more interesting than just another monster to kill.
I feel like Green moon or Rao is a funny joke based on the Lore of Old Krypton. Rao was the sun god of krypton, green Kryptonite only works due to the fact that it isn’t exposed to red sunlight.
7:49 where did you get this improved map? I pride myself on having the most complete collection of darksun possible. I don't recognize that particular map. At least not in that detail.
Dark sun is like a mix between Conan and barbarian and Mad Max Yeah dark sun this is my favorite setting in DMD before Dungeons & Dragons when the shit thanks a lot wizards but good video I like it. 👍
"This is not the lava from some volcano, for athas lacks the oceans to make them." Huh? Oceans aren't necessary for volcanoes to form.. all lava is from the core of a planet..
I like to think that Althas is about as accessible to travel on a planar level as most other dnd settings. The issue is, no one in their right mind would want to go there. Magic works differently that any planar traveling magic user would be at a huge disadvantage and vulnerable . The average person and environment is far tougher and more deadly than most places you’ll find throughout the realms. There isn’t anything really of value to any treasure seekers, unprocessed metal is worth more than the lives of dozens of slaves. I’d love the idea of some person from althas getting transported to some place like Sigil and losing their mind at just the sheer amount of metal all over the place.
Love it man. Im training jiu jitsu in Brazil at the moment when i get back to new Zealand im going get i to DnD . I hope to find some people who play dark sun🙏. With the character creation is it a different set up in the sense. 1. You have to just pick a race from the dark sun world. 2. Can you make multi race. 3. Can you pick skills that reflect dark sun. Like survivalist and such. 4. What weapons and gear do you start with? Or do i pick that with my caracter creation?
It seems as if I cannot see a larger portion of the comments on this video. Which is strange and sincerely makes me wonder what the purpose would even be? It’s not like this is anything bad.
I don’t know why but I imagine the people of Athas to all have various southern accents instead of your usual fantasy British accents. You show up in athas and Borys has a THICK South Carolina accent
@@GrimDarkHalfOff The Half-Giants would totally have Australian accents. The Muul would either have Texan or Mexican accents depending on where they're from.
I've been watching mystata content and the great barrier and the gray have a lot in common. Both had the help of the elemental lords. Dark sun didn't have immortals though to keep stuff in check just mortals with God like powers.
A very very VERY minor correction, however volcanoes do not exist because of oceans, its the tectonic plates under either land or sea that create volcanoes, and lava comes from both. I digress, but good video.
I've always kind of hated how the D&D Multivurse kind of insists upon itself, regardless of how little it makes sense in relation to any given setting. On top of that, it insists that all D&D worlds, even those run by you and your friends are connected to it, even if you don't want it to be. Sure you can always rule it doesn't have a connection, but thene you have to explain that to every new player.

Ravenloft is a HUGE upgrade from Athas. Metal, water, soil, food, and all you have to worry about is being prey. You're already prey in Athas.

Running Dark Sun using Savage Worlds is about the most fun you can have with tabletop gaming, in my opinion. A match made in heaven.
