  • The story takes place in the future, when people are colonizing other planets in the Solar System. A soldier from a unit stationed on Venus is sent to retrieve a crystal that holds strategic importance for humans but falls into a trap set by the native lizard-like people - a labyrinth with invisible walls.
The original version of the story, written by the young Kenneth Sterling (based on the idea from Edmond Hamilton's story "The Monster-God of Mamurth"), was half as long. Lovecraft rewrote the work, preserving as many original elements as possible.
The writers adorned "In the Walls of Eryx" with playful references to known individuals in their surroundings (for example, "effjay weeds and slimy ackmanths" are references to the disliked Forrest J Ackerman).

I have always wondered how people can do audiobooks and not violate copyright laws? Books used to come with a warning in the front - do not reproduce.

The copyright to literary works (actually all works) is not eternal. Its duration varies depending on the country. In most parts of the world, it lasts for 50 or 70 years after the author's death. After this period, they enter the Public Domain and can be reproduced, translated, or adapted freely. Otherwise, every orchestra that wants to play Bach would have to locate his heirs and buy the copyright from them. It would be impossible to publish books where determining heirs is problematic (the entire legacy of antiquity or the Middle Ages), etc. In the case of the USA, the rules are quite complicated. In this specific case, "In The Walls of Eryx" was published in 1939. Theoretically, copyright could last up to 95 years, but it required the owners to renew the copyright with the office 27 years after publication, which did not happen. As a result, the work entered the Public Domain in 1965. If you are more interested in this topic, you can find more information on the internet, e.g., Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_term

@@gatesofimagination Oh. I have heard of movies not having the copyright renewed, and so entering the public domain. But I never thought about it with books and stories. I thought they had like seventy years, or so.

@@gatesofimagination How do you know if the work is in the public domain if it hasn't been 70 years?

Never mind, I looked on Quora. It's kind of complicated. :(

Fun fact: Kenneth Sterling was a physician.
Nice narration, your skill keeps improving.

Well and wow😮 Quite the departure for HPL. He still captures the otherworldly horror but without the supernatural overtones. I liked it. Thanks to Kenneth Sterling, as well, for the idea.

I just wanted to take a moment and thank Jordan Harvey for all the artwork for the video thumbnails. I've recently been listening to many of the videos again, as this is my usual channel to put on audiobooks for falling asleep to, and it seems like they are are his work. Jordan if you see this, thank you for your fantastic work.
