- University of Washington computer scientists have developed gesture-recognition technology that brings this a step closer to reality. Researchers have shown it's possible to leverage Wi-Fi signals around us to detect specific movements without needing sensors on the human body or cameras. Project page: wisee.cs.washin...
any source code or any other implementation? closed-source projects suck
Trying to kill a mosquito with my hand,
I turned on the washer machine.
xDDDDD
This is amazing technology, can't wait to hear more about it.
ooo the military applications of this. I bet big brother would love this.
this gave me quite a lot of ideas, thanks
i watched this way back but im happy i could find it, it helped me think of quite some things and experiments :D
Hello. I DO NOT understand why you leave comment on Japanese for this vid, which is done by Chinese people...The person on the video, his personal information including his name written in Chinese is on the webpage linked on the video description.
They explain it very well, they dont really know what pose the body is. But each body pose affects the wifi sensor signal the same way, they store the sequence of the gesture signal, and train their program to recognize it. Their are some other research than this that transforms wifi waves into 2d images, so they can know how many people is behind a wall or something like that. i dont remember exactly.
This works through walls, meaning with 3 sensors you can triangulate people moving in appartments.
imagine the impact if it retains memory of all the motions and can translate it into a virtual representation. It would change the crime scene investigations for ever.
Great Job guys! This looks promising
This should be open source! Push this video to a Kickstarter or IndieGoGo campaign. We'd certainly help.
That is very cool, could be used as a state of the intrusion detection system for the low income family.
We are genious! So simple and so useful!
I believe with 3 antennas + 3 wifi devices, I guess it would be possible to use the frequency change to triangulate the position of people in a building using a similar system.
@WiSee, it it posible to do 3D mapping of the environment from wifi signal?
so.. what if you decide to start sporadically dancing to the music you're playing.. will all of the electronics in your house just start going haywire?
+GG Rabbit A Disney movie, then!
I agree that gestures should be more natural, but the example you gave could and have been done with simple motion sensors. What would be neat is if a system like the Wi-See could tell if people were shivering and then turn up the heat and turn on the air conditioning when sweating. When a person lays down to sleep the lights go off. A truly context aware motion system would bring home automation to the future.
i think it is now possible to use AI + surveillance cameras like kinect to calibrate the accuracy of radio signals in relation to movement
No longer are radioactive materials needed to make "X-Ray" like sensors; they are available in our own homes. At which point do we transgress the physical to be able to blend the physical space-and-time with the thoughts of our own existence? Already I have done research into the metaphysical by using the WiFi to see if I can make a sort of digital-telepathy and have had results, of seeing data transmission in my mind from the WiFi network while sleeping. The findings of this research are scary.
Who would dislike this?
Did you consider security applications? Can it sense proximity?
actually this technology did exist in Military circles for quite a while and is called celldar
i thought that it was a hoax... but its not.. great work!
Looks like magic!
This is cool, but has a lot of work. Something like a private reconnection gesture adding both privacy and helping to eliminate a "accidental" gesture. Reconnection privacy and ease of use are my main concerns.
WeSee gestures = The ways of the force
Now that futuristic magic. This could have applications in video games and home use.
really good comment
do you swith of tv before doing yoga?
just the same with this device when it bothers you :)
that has to be a very very complex algorithm if u can isolate 10-20 hz from 2.4ghz/5ghz and taking out much of the noise. how would it handle multiple gestures from different people and would pets affect it. what about neighbors sucking up free wifi, would they be able to access wisee through their gestures. how do u isolate the gesture from the noise?
Could give a whole new meaning to the phrase "butt dial"
There isn't much room for gesture recognition in the future, it might be fun to toy with but motion capture far exceeds its capabilities. The next biggest thing to catch on is voice recognition, such as the XBOX One is shipping with.
which software was used on Ubuntu? Gnuradio?
Seems impossible to me in reality (in a real flat, with other electric device, washing machine...)
HOLA, CON SU TECNOLOGÍA PUEDEN FABRICAR UNA LUZ SEGUIDOR PARA TEATROS O ESCENARIOS? PARA QUE ILUMINE DE FORMA AUTOMÁTICA AL ARTISTA QUE SE MUEVE EN EL ESCENARIO...
How do you recognise a particular gesture at a different location? Also what would happen if some of the transceivers mvoed around (eg. phone). Do you adjust for that?.
I've heard of some government tech using same principle, using multiple 2g and 3g cellular towers and all the doppler spectrum data logged, is it possible to recreate an entire 3d virtual environment near the towers and 'see what happened in the past' ?
what machine learning algorithm was used?
No one seems to be concerned of the health effects of this proliferating use of microwaves. It is insane.
xbox one with kinect is like 1984.
WiSee with a few exploits is 2014.We need a new book!
Is this open-sourced?
turn her lights in the whole house off *. Rather than getting up and switch off all the lights in the house one by one *, she decides it would be easier to do a series of big swoops with her arms to accomplish this task.
Technology indeed!
tis actualy looks good
so is it out can we set it up ourselfs?
The first thing I though when I saw, the punching gesture, is that could detect, domestic violence or home invasion, and call the police or neighbourhood watch.
I agree. I thought using remote controls was lazy, but this brings laziness to a whole new level, which they try to justify with innovation, when really it would just (like you said) be prone to errors under certain circumstances, as well as prone to trolls like my brother who enjoys annoying me while I watch T.V. No thanks... I like being able to keep my remote away from my brother rather than under his control.
2:53 - the girl laying in bed wishes to turn her lights off. Rather than reach over and flip the switch, she decides it would be easier to do a series of big swoops with her arms to accomplish this task. Technology!
can it also detect properly the fingers?
This is cool. :D
Yes, but, can it make itself immune from outside the home interference?
If someone brings a new device into the home, will it not foul the RF field?
Without a confirmation (such as a spoken keyphrase), a microwave oven could make your house go insane.
Here's a far flung, but plausible thought, what's to stop your neighbors from using the same technology, eventually to see through your walls?
I know it's only an early prototype, but these things need consideration now.

NIIIIIICEEE!!!!!!
Wow this is good Great job :)
Person: "High-Five! Up High! Down low! Too slow! Hahaha"
*Fireplace turns on*
Person: O.o
The question is, would it be opensource ? pls say yes :D
well on a city level, pretty sure this effectively WOULD be the technology from the dark knight.
If they can do hand gestures in the home with a few devices imagine what they can do in a city with thousands of devices
If I want this for my home, how will I get it?
this is ultimately gesture control, Millions of applications while it combined with wisdom home.
You will want to read the fucking FAQ first.
In the "Would I accidentally trigger commands through WiSee?" section, they said it's unlikely to trigger commands accidentally because the algorithm requires you to perform a series of gestures to get into the control system.
I can just see us all learning sign language just to use this! xD
very good until another person enters the room and the received signal pattern changes.
Exactly what I thought.
stealth fighter detection technology has commercialized so soon!
buttons are still more practical than motion control
This is so amazing and so far away from my knowledge that I prefer refute this science and believe that this is fake :D
Do i look like i go see the webpage linked on the video description? I don't even know how i freaking ended here!
I think that the best prediction of the future comes from the movie Wall-E.
what sorcery is this?
So... specific moves will activate specifics things... ok, so now i know why the Power Rangers dance to put those fancy colored suits.
Awesome tec =) Grats
The issues of this technology must be addressed. Personal privacy is a concern. If this technology is refined the specific movements of one person may be monitored remotely through a wall by anyone with a specially designed "WiFi" sensor. It is my duty to rebuke this information technology wholly and outright, the WiFi technology, and recommend AM transmission as a much more appropriate EM band. At which point do we become victims of our own luxuries?
You should think about user-feedback.
eeeeeeepiiiicc
"Your gesture is not enough safe, use at least two flips and a pose of yoga."
I'm not buying it.. I would thing you would need either a very sensitive receiving antenna or an array of them or the latency will be unacceptable.
secret service agent's wet dream ...
Thanks, big brother.
I see it... Its the Tony Stark's hologram projector interface (minus the hologram).
If I do get one of them, I shall call it JARVIS
Wi-C or Wi-Sight would be a better name
luckily i doubt anyone in their right minds would program it to do things off a pets gesture
This won't work well enough for consumers. But the military and law enforcement applications will be quite something. Aliens "motion tracker" is here.
Please make an open source api for this. I would like to donate and develop for you. I have 2 months from now free from school. Ill help with what I can. This is THE NEXT THING!
Ubuntu is great!
How?
Can you imagine a dog .... very happy... moving hit tale?
This is the same WIFI tech that enables police and others to see through your walls.
you misspelled "magic".
Haha - Wii will be telling you "now, now - you'll go blind!"
At the end couldn't she have just bought "The Clapper"?
Welcome to the future
Esta madre esta chida
the dark knight shows us similar idea... however i thought it was just science fiction.
Well this is why sorcerers use hand gestures to cast spells. They WiSee picks it up and and do the desired effects. But in the middle ages ppl dint know ist a WiSee.
So just turn it off then.
tutorial please?
This is a double edge sword for sure: now the government, if it wishes to, will be able to know your exact location in your own house, as well as your posture, what kind of activities you are engaging in, and even your body mass, phenotype, body language, and probably other things that at this very moment escape me... We are going beyond Nineteen Eighty-Four, indeed.,
Niceeeeee
The intended usage is noble and all, but this could be used to know what someone is doing, where they are in their house, and a number of other activities. Seems like the ideal spying platform considering the number of WiFi devices in people's homes.
Gostei
SillyTech!!! So what happens when the whole family wants to change the music?? Or, a group of people in a room all standing about waving their arms in the air!? This is for laziness!!
Thumbs Up for Ubuntu :)
it will need a lot of work but it can work lots of bugs
