I hope you guys enjoy the video and review but remember its 100% worth checking out this video too ua-cam.com/video/yIkEbu8XyKg/v-deo.html where the speakers designer explains the new Mission 770 in great detail. Thanks
I had the mission 70mkII's in college then I think the 760's. Everyone I knew really liked them so we all had them with a few people having the 770's. That was ages ago but we were all very happy with them. It's great to see how they've evolved. I have a soft spot for Mission, great memories.
AllI can say after all this time is....I wouldn't change a thing about the sound of these speakers! The blend of sound coming form these speakers are truly unique and I have had some fantastic speakers.
Back in the 1980's I sold mission speakers in the USA at what is today a BOX store. We had them in a speaker room with many other speakers. Our sound surround demo used a Top Gun on a Laser disk. Sound wise the MISSIONS brought voices into the room, not being heard from another room. Solo sub-woofers weren't really on the market. I demonstrated how these other brands had a bass you could hear. They had a hump about 150hz. I had customers put there hand about 10 inches in front of the speaker. They could feel bass with MISSION speaker. I told customers if you want a real performance, movies that shake your chair, buy MISSIONS. I sold lots of MISSIONS. I bought a pair for myself.
I've been looking forward to your review of the New Mission 770 speaker's and yet again an informative and honest review. The fact that you 'plonked' them down and just enjoyed listening to the music is high praise, this along with your experience and explanation of how they sound is heartfelt and no doubt Mission will be thoroughly pleased as am I... well done
Another great review. Mission was my first “audiophile” speaker with a NAD preamp and Adcom amplifier back in the eighties. It was the start to this long expensive journey of two channel audio. Could only afford the bottom of the mission line back then. Hoping these are available in the US as Mission appears to have limited distribution here. Would be cool to have a pair of these!
I had a NAD integrated and Mission 700s because it was what I could afford. 40 years later, my dream speaker is still the 780 Argonauts. It is nice to read the comments of a person who remembers the Mission hay days

I've had them for all these years and they still look and sound great. I bought them along with a NAD stereo receiver, which I also still own today. The Missions and the NAD complemented each other very well. I'd sure love to upgrade to the 770 some day because I have a sort of love affair with Mission, but for the moment my music room is too small to have such a big speaker. Perhaps when I retire in a few years... I love your new decor by the way. Very nice. Keep up your great reviews. Cheers from Montreal.

I read a lot of very positive reviews on these speakers and a year ago I was able to purchase them and enjoy them. They sound very good, but I have to turn the volume up. Listening at low volume levels, during daytime, I get a flat sound; the bass and lower mids fall of a cliff. I have a Marantz PM14 to drive them. I was wondering wether I should invest in a more powerfull amp, like the Hegel H390, to get a fuller sound at low levels? I have also been working on room treatment, but that didn't bring all I hoped for. A couple of moths ago I developed a nasty Tinitus, so my max is 65Db now. I hope you still respond to this "old" video. Greeting, Han Jeurissen from Holland
I think the best thing you will be able do here is get an amp that includes dsp or tone controls as you will need a big lift in the bass and treble at 65db listening levels. Look at the science of human hearing for that volume level and see how insensitive your ears are to high and low frequencies. Subwoofer helps these speakers and I have not tried a super tweeter but that could also be useful. Hifi rose amps have good tone controls built into them as an example but there will be others
@PursuitPerfectSystem Thank you for your swift reply. Today I heard a Hegel H390 with Kef reference 1 meta speakers. I was amazed with the fullness of that sound even at low volume. Made me wonder if the Hegel could boost my Missions 770. Guess I have to find a way to hook them up and see what happens. Again, thank you.
Love to know what they sound like with the REL subwoofers from the “valleys” for a British collaboration, especially if you can fit Gaia isolators to the speaker stands🇬🇧
It will be the same as with all speakers but the trick with the Missions will be not to muddy their sound because their resolution is fantastic and being greedy with the bass could mask that. It will be a fun challenge to integrate the rels and they will make the systems sound grow up and improve the dimensionality too so its worth the work.
Hi, I enjoyed the review, as usual, but I think you should always say how good speakers are regarding the price point. If I say that the Missions 770 are really great, how do I have to take it? Are they beasts regarding to 10.000 euros speakers, that means regarding speakers twice their price?
Sorry havent tried either. You could use these for home cinema they would be more than fine, not sure about near field though you would be best to email Mission about that and ask
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I’m not being sarcastic- bass is like that always, but above 400hz they measure just how I find I regularly prefer speakers. That roll off at the top and all, no presence bumps, no tricks. Very interesting to me.
Many thanks for a great review - I am interested in listening to a pair but wondered how good they are a lower volumes - 70 - 80db? Do you think that they would be suitable for a smaller room?
My room is pretty small and they are fine in there, more width would make for a wider sound stage of course but they should be ok. I would say this is a lot of money to spend so best play safe and see if you can get a home demo to see for sure
@@PursuitPerfectSystem many thanks Terry, that's a help. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to home demo. The room is pretty wide so should soundstage OK....love the channel & your new listening room. Best wishes, Mike
Not yet that is my next step and video, I think depending in certain factors you can get away without a sub with the 770 but I think the REL will be a improvement to the system.
Id be interested to see if they can throw female vocals into the room as good as the 764i's did, still never heard anything as good as these, all these years later. Such an understated pair. Still, good to see.
For a thousand more, you could have the Tannoy Legacy Eatons....although I must say, Peter had a big part in the creation of the Wharfedale Diamond 225's, which are fantastic for the money. So, I would assume these speakers are also something special.
Would love to see this Mission compared to harbeth super hl5 xd3 , and spendor classic 2/3 ...roughly the same size , all British ,..about the same price . But ..i would think so different,...
Thorough and interesting review Terry. 'Across the pond' comparison? Would love to know how these compare with my Spatial Audio M3 Sapphires (Open baffle). Greetings to you and yours!
I 'knew' the bass definition and extension was going to be great and no doubt better than the Linton's. I loved my audition with the Linton's but bass was basic to excuse the pun. Very liable to sound like it was thumping along with no deftness or insight. I am sorely tempted by the missions therefore but the price differential is substantial. The speakers are to go either side of an enclosed wood fire. The Linton's I can plonk down at their price point and not worry, the missions on the other hand is in a price where high end hifi has begun IMO (circa £2000/pair of speakers)
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I’m still enjoying my LS50th anniv since 2012 and my 105/3 since 1992. If my budget allows I’ll go for the Kef reference 1, but before making the jump I’ll have a listen to the 770 😄
Hi everyone, I am late, very late to the reviews but am very interested as want to invest in another speaker, I own both ATC SCM11s and Spendor D7… wondering if anyone who’s experience of listening could give some opinion, pointers to how they might sound differently (amp wise I have an ATC SIA 150 MKII, Sugden a21SE and a Bucharest I150 digital) great review by the way and interesting interview with Peter C
I had a pair back in 1980 -They were recommended by every reviewer of the day. When properly tested they were found to be crap. Chuffing of the front port was a nightmare. We resulted in packing the port with straws. I'd leave well alone until a proper test is conducted by an independent third party . They price now is ridiculous .
I am an independent third party and saw this exact pair being built by hand in the UK..no straws in sight haha. No port chuffing no real weaknesses, great speaker
I had the 753 non Freedom. It is the most muffled sounding speaker I ever had. I am surprised why so much hype about this 753. I am not sure if this new speaker still sound muffle.
We need the new KEF 104ab...B&W DM2/4....Celestion Ditton 44/66....AR 10/11....etc...It's time to throw all those vacuum cleaners looking speakers in the dump. And hopefully it would be time to change DRASTICALLY also the horrible aesthetics of the so called "modern" (read UGLY) amplifiers ...make them aesthetically beautiful like the 70's equipment!
If we put 770's and Linton's next to each other's, Linton's looks like milion bucks!! Even Linton stands look better! So the question now is how drastic is sound quality and is it worth the upper price?
The person that puts on the serial number sticker needs to get a new pair of glasses 🤓 These are definitely nice speakers but at 7,000 Aussie dollars they would want to be.
In the previous interview video I noticed in footage technician using a bit driver non perpendicular to the cabinet. Maybe at around 70 degrees or so, made me cringe.
Everyone should have a loudspeaker that says MISSION in front of them in their living room. What a design concept! :P It is an insult to people's tastes for a brand to place an advertising sign on its product.
Well Sir I wonder: do you DARE to compare this speaker with the Wharfedale New Super Linton ? They look rather similar ,have approximately the same volume, the same stands Also both speakers were very popular at the time and these are both new versions Okay the one is a three way system and the other two The price tag is very very different though.
I talk about this in the video - they are not designed to have the same sound signature but either way the Mission is a much higher resolution speaker aka a much better speaker
There are not many bad products out there that I know of, the standard from cheap to expensive HiFi is generally very good across the board so I think the real challenge for manufacturers is standing out in the sea of good products.
The blueprints for the original died long ago with the designer. Peter Comeau who designed these had to work out what was going on from scratch including dissecting the crossover which was not a common design at all. Watch the other video I mentioned and you will see these new 770 are nothing like the old ones really except the size shape look and then the best bits about how they sounded. Its very interesting to see them old and new side by side
The 770 are not lacking bass they are just tuned to sound a certain way keeping the mids intact. If they were lacking bass I wouldn't have liked them as much as I do
3500$ 🙄.. i dont hear or lift them but for me the cabinet with the driver look like a ~150$ pick you did on a garage sale.... And damn your room mode at 30Hz :-D that looks painful
@@PursuitPerfectSystem i watch it :-) personally i'm not a fan of these Retro designs / marketing strategy. But there are a lot of people who found their style in that wich is fine
Linton are not a direct competitor to the 770 they just a similar form factor (loosely, similar size) - if you look at direct competition of a British made 2 way speaker it would be something like a Harbeth C7ESR XD and see what they sell for with no stands
@@peterwood2633 if you compare to the harbeth and Spendor simialr size and spec speakers both are more expensive. You cannot judge value before even hearing the speakers and seeing them in the flesh.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem aren't harbeth notoriously expensive though? No idea re spendor. The missions do sound like they are hifi yet pleasant to listen to from your description with little fatigue.
In room they play to 30hz, looks is personal but you will need to have seen them in the flesh, seen them being built, listened to them compared to other similar model speakers which mostly cost more and only then can you decide on their value. Otherwise your basing your opinion on nothing, its fact less which is not sensible
@@jkester77 i have demonstrated how good these speakers are already you can't bias sound quality - nothing more needs to be said about that. I am sorry but your opinion on the looks of the speaker without seeing them in the flesh is semi justiifed but any further opinion on value unless you have spent time with these speakers is the optime of a biased opinion. Sorry but that is true, it cannot get any more biased than that.

It’s up to you but you should think about how sound works first as that will help you a lot en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal-loudness_contour
I'm curious how you feel about the Hibiki SDS signature DAC? Do you hold it is a world class DAC?
great stuff - LA
Great based against everything I have had in my room, of course not the best but great enough for me to buy them fwiw :)
Can I use these for games and movies too 🤔
More bass or deeper bass?
I’ve got the Wharfedale Linton and all these new throw back speakers have me curious to hear them and compare them to what I’ve got at home.
Very nice speakers 👍would like to hear by occasion. Thanks
Can do a review on the New Wharfedale Dovedale....
Its not out yet to be able to
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Looking forward for your review...
I would love that too!
Can you comment on the port? Does it call attention to itself?
No its silent
Sounds like you’re describing the KLH 5’s, which is high praise. 👍
I want to compare them and see how they stack up
Not having a rear port, can these speakers be positioned closer to the wall? Thanks.
Nice Review
I think these look great. How are they for near field listening and do you think they will be additionally suitable for home theatre use?
Sorry havent tried either. You could use these for home cinema they would be more than fine, not sure about near field though you would be best to email Mission about that and ask
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Thank you!
They measure gorgeous
Do remember thats the in my room response so a real world reponse. Not many people show you that
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I’m not being sarcastic- bass is like that always, but above 400hz they measure just how I find I regularly prefer speakers. That roll off at the top and all, no presence bumps, no tricks. Very interesting to me.
I remember hearing the originals in Lasky’s back in the 70’s but couldn’t afford them.
Now you still can’t afford them 😂
Many thanks for a great review - I am interested in listening to a pair but wondered how good they are a lower volumes - 70 - 80db? Do you think that they would be suitable for a smaller room?
My room is pretty small and they are fine in there, more width would make for a wider sound stage of course but they should be ok. I would say this is a lot of money to spend so best play safe and see if you can get a home demo to see for sure
@@PursuitPerfectSystem many thanks Terry, that's a help. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to home demo. The room is pretty wide so should soundstage OK....love the channel & your new listening room. Best wishes, Mike
was wondering if the RELs were set up as part of your review? what's your impressions of the matching if you did use the subs?
Not yet that is my next step and video, I think depending in certain factors you can get away without a sub with the 770 but I think the REL will be a improvement to the system.
Id be interested to see if they can throw female vocals into the room as good as the 764i's did, still never heard anything as good as these, all these years later. Such an understated pair. Still, good to see.
I’d love to A/B with my Spendor Classic 2/3’s..
Great review 👍
Same I just checked the Spendor are nearly a £1k more and dont come with stands
@@PursuitPerfectSystem haha alas I know that all to well. I’d love to get a chance to try the missions, I’ve always been a fan of the originals.
They are sure pretty to look at.
@Pursuit Perfect System how do these compare with ATC SCM19/20 or 50?
Hopefully they will be shown in Munich shortly
For a thousand more, you could have the Tannoy Legacy Eatons....although I must say, Peter had a big part in the creation of the Wharfedale Diamond 225's, which are fantastic for the money. So, I would assume these speakers are also something special.
Sound like mission signature sound 😁
I remember the original and preferred the haybrook hb1👍👍
Interestingly these new Mission 770 are designed by the man who designed the HB1
0:59 Made in the UK 👍
Yeah the opened a whole new facility for it
Would love to see this Mission compared to harbeth super hl5 xd3 , and spendor classic 2/3 ...roughly the same size , all British ,..about the same price . But ..i would think so different,...
Do they sell the stands alone? Because to me they look much much better than the ones made for the Linton with those two bulky pieces of wood!
Renaissance was their best selling speaker And All of the range was meant to be back to Wall Which was their selling point
Do they need a subwoofer?
Need no but maybe check out my recent video for the rel classic 98
Thorough and interesting review Terry. 'Across the pond' comparison? Would love to know how these compare with my Spatial Audio M3 Sapphires (Open baffle). Greetings to you and yours!
There was talk about me reviewing them but I don't know what happened ?
I 'knew' the bass definition and extension was going to be great and no doubt better than the Linton's. I loved my audition with the Linton's but bass was basic to excuse the pun. Very liable to sound like it was thumping along with no deftness or insight. I am sorely tempted by the missions therefore but the price differential is substantial. The speakers are to go either side of an enclosed wood fire. The Linton's I can plonk down at their price point and not worry, the missions on the other hand is in a price where high end hifi has begun IMO (circa £2000/pair of speakers)
Looks like Kinki is a good match to these beauties
Yeah its a good match but depending on what sound you like and your budget you can go much higher and the 770 will keep giving
I sold my 707 a couple of years ago 😬
perfect timing to buy these new ones 😜
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I’m still enjoying my LS50th anniv since 2012 and my 105/3 since 1992. If my budget allows I’ll go for the Kef reference 1, but before making the jump I’ll have a listen to the 770 😄
@@rs73only that would be a very intereting comparison to do
Hi everyone, I am late, very late to the reviews but am very interested as want to invest in another speaker, I own both ATC SCM11s and Spendor D7… wondering if anyone who’s experience of listening could give some opinion, pointers to how they might sound differently (amp wise I have an ATC SIA 150 MKII, Sugden a21SE and a Bucharest I150 digital) great review by the way and interesting interview with Peter C
At that price it would be at the price range of Wharfedale Elysian. Wharfedale Elysian is top notch built and sound!.
Yep be different and interesting to compare them
I had the 753 non Freedom. It is the most muffled sounding speaker I ever had. I am surprised why so much hype about this 753.
I am not sure if this new speaker still sound muffle.
Nothing muffled here fwiw
From my experience with Mission spks, muffled is the last word i would associate with them….
Check out Alchris Audio AR-66, Morden Ditton 66 👍
If we put 770's and Linton's next to each other's, Linton's looks like milion bucks!!
Even Linton stands look better!
So the question now is how drastic is sound quality and is it worth the upper price?
Do the comparison and you will see
I prefer the look of the Linton's and their stands as separate items Vs the missions. Missions with grilles off wins though.
@@peterwood2633 That is not good i agree!
Everyone should have a loudspeaker that says MISSION in front of them in their living room. What a design concept! :P It is an insult to people's tastes for a brand to place an advertising sign on its product.
They are not advertising to the person who has already bought them? I like the logo on the front I think it looks cool
Well Sir I wonder: do you DARE to compare this speaker with the Wharfedale New Super Linton ?
They look rather similar ,have approximately the same volume, the same stands
Also both speakers were very popular at the time and these are both new versions
Okay the one is a three way system and the other two
The price tag is very very different though.
I talk about this in the video - they are not designed to have the same sound signature but either way the Mission is a much higher resolution speaker aka a much better speaker
As a reviewer do you ever review a bad product?
There are not many bad products out there that I know of, the standard from cheap to expensive HiFi is generally very good across the board so I think the real challenge for manufacturers is standing out in the sea of good products.
Looking very much like they pulled out blueprints from their 70's offerings and maybe tweaked them a little.
Everything old is new again.
They are exactly the same, except for the cabinet, crossover, woofer, tweeter, and port. 😆
wife said ‘no’
Wife said no, what did your LIFE say
For the price it better be...
Mission have pretty much been very lacking in bass especially in bookshelf form. I really dont rate Mission.
Check out the video where the speaker design is explained in detail, as its not the case at all
@@PursuitPerfectSystem i watch it :-) personally i'm not a fan of these Retro designs / marketing strategy. But there are a lot of people who found their style in that wich is fine
@@vtkz yeah big peak at 30hz is not really an issue with speakers more with subwoofers but I am an expert with Dirac Live so i dont worry about that
thought the same. Looks a little bit cheap and never worth 3500,-
3500 quid for those speakers? Are they having a laugh? Shouldn't be more than Linton price.
Linton are not a direct competitor to the 770 they just a similar form factor (loosely, similar size) - if you look at direct competition of a British made 2 way speaker it would be something like a Harbeth C7ESR XD and see what they sell for with no stands
I think they're overpriced too. £2000 is probably where they ought to be. But being made in UK does that.
£3500 yeah right. At £770 they'd still be overpriced.
Interesting comment because I have looked at 19 different speakers ranging from £600 to a £1000 none of them compare
Mission. Always a middle of the road speaker. Loved only by hipsters.
👍🌈
The mission look is just uninspiring.....
Could they have made it any uglier?
I think they look great!
I am sorry, they are ugly and overpriced. Plus they aren't even a 3-way speaker, only go down to 42hz!
In room they play to 30hz, looks is personal but you will need to have seen them in the flesh, seen them being built, listened to them compared to other similar model speakers which mostly cost more and only then can you decide on their value. Otherwise your basing your opinion on nothing, its fact less which is not sensible
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I disagree, you got stake in the company? lol
@@jkester77 just spent time with a lot of high end speakers inc the 770 and then just use unbiased common sense to make a judgement
@@PursuitPerfectSystem still ugly and expensive, I stand by it, no matter what biased stuff you say, lol!
Hi Terry, do you plan to test Elysians from the same engineer also? I really would like to see you your review of these, especially model 2 and 4. And of course I would like to hear your music samples from them. They seems to be great even with basic cheap ScanSpeak drivers.
