I'm almost 50 years old. My dad had a 51 Willys truck since I was born. And he sold it a few years ago and I was just devastated! Granted, it needed a lot of work, but it was a huge part of my childhood.

Wow, nice truck! My Dad had one in the 70's. Also had a Buick 350 V8 that wanted to overheat. I believe it had a Corvette radiator. Some better ducting helped, but many times, he'd have to put it into neutral and coast down hill's to cool it off.

It's interesting that it is referred to as a 1957 model because the front and cab bodywork is from 1960 or 1961-1964. The trim on the doors and side of cab is the same trim used on the 1959 Maverick and the 1960 Station Wagon, then used on the pick up and Utility Wagon from 1961. The one piece curved windshield was introduced on the Maverick in 1959, and then, on all models of the Wagon in 1960.
I've been involved with late model 1959-1964 2wd Willys Station and Utility Wagons for over 40 years. I own a real 1959 Maverick "Special" and a 1962 Station Wagon (the one with the Nike missile or bottle-nose bullet style trim that some rather erroneously call a Maverick, despite the fact that Willys never called the 1961-64 Station wagons with that trim Maverick, and their is absolutely no paperwork for any claims that Willys called them Maverick). I have also owned an original 1960 Station Wagon, and two others, only one of which was a four wheel drive.
I've also inspected, driven and researched hundreds of Willys wagons over the years, and done a lot of serial number tracing. I'm really curious what the serial number is of that truck, because I bet it is 1961 or later, or someone took the body off a 1961 and put it on something else.
Nice looking truck and tidying up job. Credit to you for a nice save. Nothing against you obviously as you didn't put in the V8, but a note to others. I really wish people understood these vehicles work much better with the inline American straight 6's, some more modern 4 cylinders and even the original F-head Willys 4 cylinder. All of my 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive Station Wagons were able to climb steeper slopes than a Land Rover, or CJ5/6/7 and one of them with a more modern 2.2L four cylinder also gets 20 mpg, and can top out at over 100 mph. 240 or 300 Fords, 232 and 258 AMC and 225 slant sixes all work well in these and preserve the high low end torque these were known for. With all the 5 speed overdrive trannys floating around now, it is even easier to build a nice drivetrain that still has the good characteristics of a Willys. This particularly applies to the 2wd wagons and trucks with the straight axle.

It's definitely an early-'60s model...surprised they got that so wrong. A vexing question I've had is when exactly was the utility line of wagons and pickups no longer produced? I know it's supposed to be in 1964, but when during that year? None of any advertisements I've seen (many, many now) and a few pieces of industry literature or internal forms I've seen from the early 60s show any of the utility line on sale after mid-62; it was all the new J-Series at that point on. So if they were still making the utility vehicles for another couple of years, they sure weren't putting any marketing money into it. Seems odd that they'd continue building a product for so long without trying to plug it at all.

@@thomasmartin8202 I am building a 52 with mixed match parts and using a 4.2 ls Engine from a GMC Envoy whick is a great engine but not sure if I am using a T18 from a J10 pickup or 5 spt NV3500 or 4500 or possibly the 4l60E auto thats behind the 4.2 now since I have 5he whole donor truck. I do not need the V8 like everyone telled me to do. I thought about the Jeep J0 4.2 (258) and building it but many say its more of a tractor like engine. Which do you think is the better option ? The 2 Willys trucks I got neither had an engine so not like I am screwing with the classic. They are in really good shape and left to rot in a farm field so I saved them.
