    Guys and gals,
    These are my first thoughts on the new 2022 GasGas EC 300 after putting about 5 hours on the bike. In these 5 hours of ride time, I took the bike through a wide variety of terrain and put it through it's paces. I've got a good idea now of what I'm dealing with but I'm sure I'll get to know the bike more and more as I put more time on it! I will update you will a video of any mods I end up doing.
    Cheers!

    Hello Megs, before you mount a flywheel (which is certainly beneficial) you might want to experiment with the power valve setting, as it is very simple and for free. I recommend 1/2 turn wise going out and in to check which direction helps. In case of progress proceed with more 1/2 turn steps towards the improving direction until it becomes worse, than go back 1/2 or more.
    This is my personal experience with a 2019 TE250ti: My powervalve "sweet spot" was 2turns!!! out from factory setting.
    Thanks a lot for all your videos!

    FYI if you bend up the stock ribbed pipe, don’t put it on a hydraforce to blow it out. I did mine and it warped it all up. I had to use a huge ratchet strap to pull it back in a re mount it.

    Hey Megs. I have the same bike although a 21 model, but they are practically identical with no material upgrades. Check your front sprocket, it may be a 14, which mine came standard with, but it did have a 13 in the delivery pack. I had the same issues with low speed torque but loved its revvy nature. I changed down to the 13 front sprocket and now the bike lugs beautifully and easily holds 2nd gear on climbs and I'm 200 pounds, so it has plenty of grunt (rear sprocket is 50 std). I also changed to a FMF Gnarly header, which gave it more lug at the bottom. In summary, I've done 100 hours on the bike and its my most favorite bike I've ever owned, and I have had 8 KTM 300's before this including TPi. Boggles my mind how a bike can have such a unique feel when its basically a parts bin special using KTM and Husky parts. The front brakes are different, but in my view they are no worse. On the plus side they have great feel and a larger bight point. On the down side you do need a little more lever pull to get big stopping power. But on balance I prefer them to the Brembos.

      Sorry, forgot to add I changed the map at the first service. Asked for something with more low down hit and that gave it a lot more grunt too.

      @@craignicholson1788 In all the comments I've read all over, your changes seemed to have resolved any issues I thought I might have concerning lugging and it seems you didn't even touch the flywheel. do you know what they did with your map to help the low down? Cuz where I ride lugability is huge upside, and any way to give me an advantage is helpful.

    • @craignicholson1788
      @craignicholson1788 Рік тому +1

      @@brianessig Hey Brian. I don't know exactly what they did to my map. I fitted a map switch and asked them to give me a lug map and an aggressive map. I tend to ride in the aggressive map most the time, only using the lug map for very slippy conditions when traction is at a premium. I turned out the valve spring 1.5 from factory setting, it made quite a big difference to the bottom. Most of my riding is at 5000 feet plus altitude and the bike still feels very strong. If you want to prioritize luggability, the other option is to just go with a smaller back sprocket, 48 tooth probably. But I don't want to sacrifice the top end, so I stick with the 50.

    You are good to go for some heavier flywheel (I've seen barbarians doing it on the cheap way : a few welding sticks on the outside ring, then machine shop....it works just fine).
    For the rear brake pedal :
    => either you warm it and bend it carefully (but it can break later).
    => either you only redo the toothed end (must be out of steel ), by welding a kind of "U" on the top and filing it afterwards to make teeth. This way it will be higher. Easy job, don't even have to change the screws. 😋

      I was going to go this way when I first started riding because I thought I was never going to get the bake brake down. Clake took so long to get me the Clake 2 I ended up getting used to the back brake and sold the Clake 2 on eBay for what I bought it for. I use the Clake 1 light clutch and love it.

      @@arthurkineard7356 I have a 2022 Beta 300RR, so the clutch is pretty ridiculously light already. I put together my own LHRB from bicycle cable and an old brake leaver, but the pull is kinda hard for a 1 finger operation. The clake with 2 separate leavers inline looks perfect for what I want, but the price is brutal. Thanks for your input!

    Handlebar adjustment history,--to the best of my knowledge :) : Rotate your bars back and point your levers down. Why?
    In the 80's, (can be considered the "age of reason" for dirt bikes.), we correctly figured out eh best bar placement for maximum front end control. After 18 years off a dirt bike myself, and priding myself as an individual with my own brain, I am embarrassed I fell for the fad, (that even pro MX racers have fallen for), too. I call this phenomenon "The Monkey see, monkey do syndrome." I tried riding with my bars forward and my levers almost horizontal to the ground for 2 years,---it stinks. It is a set up for freestyle, so the riders have more knee and foot clearance for tricks,--and the entire new generation adopted it,--for no reason at all. Here is the proper way to set up your bars/levers. Rotate your bars rearward in the clamps until the grip ends are pointing down a bit, level at the absolute highest. I have mine pulled back a bit further than I would in the 80's and 90's, but I also lowered my seat, and I get a better sitting relationship with the bars. Now if you angle your levers down, you can just slightly "re-grip" your throttle right after braking for a corner, (like gripping a door knob to turn it more), and go full throttle with out your elbow dropping and your wrist being bent much (want as straight as possible all the time). When I get off the gas, I can easily use the brake lever, but the important part is not letting you elbow drop as you get on the gas. With the brake lever almost horizontal, you can't re-grip the throttle,--and Chase Sexton crashed at the last national because his elbow was at his side when he hit the face of that small jump with his balance slightly off. He would not have crashed if his elbows were up.
    With the bars closer and lower to you Megs, you will be able to get your shoulders closer to the bars for corners, (especially flat and off camber corners.), and be able to push down on the inside grip and pull up on the outside grip when needed for negotiating the corner with great control.
    We followed "objective reason" in the 80's. Then came freestyle, and we followed like sheep. My bars are so far back, when my bike is on the ground or my stand, with the front wheel straight, I can step 10 feet to the side of the bike and use one eye to line up the very ends of the grips,--and the center of my gas cap center vent hose is just below it. Now--I have control of the corners, because I can add control from over the bars in tighter corners.
    This is not freestyle,---and I promise you Megs, with your height and 3 rides,--you will not go back to the ape hangers.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA Рік тому

      I also hear good riders say that it takes too much energy to hold your elbows up, (which is why they complain about bumps on the track), but it takes very little energy to hold your elbows up when your bars are closer and lower to you, and your levers are pointed down a bit, (like 15-30 degrees). The setting you want is determined by the throttle side. You want to be able to reach the lever, (they are somewhat adjustable too), with as straight of a line as you can from the finger, wrist to elbow at all the throttle settings. Optimally, I would like to make my 1/4 turn throttle a 1/5th turn, so I did not have to re-grip at all, and i may have figured out how to do that with a replacement idler pulley and cable.

    Megs, are the engines identical between all three motorcycle manufactures each year that use the KTM engine ?. Just wondering if there is any option to install a heavier flywheel or if its manufacture year dependent and so integrated into the engine that a heavier one isn't available or can't fit in that space. Also I wonder if a different tune on the ecu would help in a situation like this or not.

    For my 2022 Husky TE300i (TPI) I had a similar experience on my first ride. So I changed stock 14 front sprocket to 13 (comes free with Husky). Rear is 50. Now second gear lugs so much better. First gear also better for super slow stuff. The Husky comes with fuel map switch, which you can probably buy for a GasGas. Map 2 less zippy and better on rough stuff, less spin, more traction, more control, better for me as an average rider anyway. Worth considering these 2 things before changing the fly wheel. It also took me about 5 rides, 15 hours, to get used to the bike (coming from 4 stroke) and now I adore it. I’m sure you’ll grow to love yours once you dial it in. Cheers

I hear my issue is actually a "safety feature" in the FI.... I'm not so sure about that but I will be flashing it out of the ECU by the end of the year 😆. I've been eyeing these gas gas. But a used te300 might be a better fit for me once the market cools off. Again, thanks!

    I love my 22 EC 300 I have about 15 hrs. on it so far. I agree the front brake is a little weak but I've actually gotten used to it, rear braketec seems really good and I think the braketec clutch on the GAS GAS is better than the Brembo. I also had some issues stalling in the technical stuff, I thought about changing the gearing but I honestly think the stock gearing is awesome for all around riding. My bro has a 21 and did the idle screw mod, I think the bike likes to stall because it doesn't Idle high enough. My bro said he was able to adjust the idle a little higher and said the bike does not want to stall like before. That will be my next mod other than that the TPI has been flawless and the bike runs amazing, my favorite all around bike that I've had.

    • @kevinanderson396
      @kevinanderson396 2 роки тому +1

      I did the idle screw mod and it help in the stalling. Rode it like that for 40 hours (21 TX300i) and then did the TBI mod from KTM/HUSKY, put in a BR8 plug and set the airscrew out to 3 turns from .5 turns (out) . The relocation of the injectors gave it a bit more down low, but really helped up high where the 300 went flat. That is where the 300 TPIs sucked. Now it runs better everywhere, gets more oil (I add 1 oz. per gallon in addition to the oil injection). It smokes a tiny bit now but interestingly it gets better mileage too, both in oil and gas consumption. It feels more like a good Keihin carb now but the benefits of FI too. TPI is all about emissions, TBI is the better way to go. No downside and better reliability--and its cheap!

I bought an EE tip that is a bit bigger. Going to try and bend it out a little and see if that helps with the new tip. I noticed the same about the grab spot. I did a tugger, but I didn't get the trail bound one you have. I'd love it but every time I look he is sold out! I have the same gripe with the tugger ( have a tugger brand one) and I find it harder to use the old grab spot I had on my 13 300xc. Over all I'm loving the "updated" version of the 13 though. Love the motor and way it runs so far. Under 20 hrs. I do notice it gets warmer than my 13. I never had a fan on it and went the same one you have on yours. It’s horrible haha! My heart sank when I have 4 hours on the bike and already couldn’t remount the pipe at both mountain points after taking it off to do some work. Oh well 🤣.

      @@megs_braap Had the same problem on my TE 150i. It's so frustrating. Wish someone would come up with an after market fix

      My 2019 TE had the rubber mounts. They changed them in 2020

    Would you consider a kx250f "Not hard to hold on to" I had to sell mine and get a klx230r because it was way to fast

    • @megs_braap
      @megs_braap  2 роки тому

      That's totally going to come down to how much experience you have. At this point in my riding, I would consider a kx250f or any other 4 stroke in that catagory to be a bike that I can ride to it's full potential without getting worn out or feeling like it's pulling my arms off. But I will absolutely say that when I had first started riding, I jumped to a 2008 kx250f from my TTR 125 way before I was ready and that thing felt like a fire breathing dragon to me. It wore me out and threw me around like a rag doll. So I totally get where you're coming from. As you put in more and more seat time, you'll gain the skills and experience needed to handle a more powerful bike without feeling like it is wearing you out.

      Would a 2 stroke trail bike be any easier to ride than a 4 stroke competition bike?

      And I mean on hilly trails

    I don't get it? If you wanted a KTM with super hyper twitchy brakes then why didn't you buy a KTM with super hyper twitchy brakes? Many of us love the more progressive feel of the front brakes on the GasGas instead the front tire wanting to lock up at every subtle touch on a KTM. You are awesome Megs, just fed up with everyone bashing a bike when it's purpose is to be it's own bike, not just a red KTM. If people want a KTM, go buy a KTM!

      Did you watch the video or did you stop when I talked about the brakes? If you continue to watch, you’ll see that I mentioned that I actually enjoyed the more progressive feel of these brakes after the pads and rotors were broken in. I’m not on here to bash this bike. I’m here giving in a honest review. Just mentioning things that I liked about the bike, and things I didn’t like. That is the purpose of a review, no?
      I did not buy a KTM because I don’t like PDS suspension. Simple as that. This Gas Gas was also more affordable for me and they were a lot more readily available.

      @@megs_braap Yes and watched pretty much every video you have ever put out but I can stop supporting you. You bought and announced the replacement KTM brake on a brand new bike because it was so bad - comes across as that part must be absolute junk! So what? Later it was just marginally junk? Take care and wish you all the best - I won't be seeing you

      Mike G I’m so sorry you feel that way, Mike. I’m sad to see that my honest review has triggered you to the point where you feel the need to leave. Having such strong opinions over these things must weigh heavily on you. I hope you find a way to deal with the stress you must deal with on a regular basis. Best of luck to you and enjoy your Gas Gas! ☺️🙏
