  • I share one of the most personal and pivotal decisions of my life: leaving medical school. This video details the motivations (or lack thereof) that led me to pursue a career in medicine to the challenges and introspections that shifted my path, I unravel the complexities behind the decision. Whether you're in the medical field, facing a significant life decision, or just curious about my journey, I hope my story offers insight and perspective. Remember, everyone's journey is unique, and sometimes the paths we don't take teach us just as much as the ones we do. Thanks for joining me in this reflection, and I appreciate your support. Feel free to reach out if you are facing a similar decision!

It takes a lot of courage to be very introspective and take action. I'm happy you were able to figure out what you really want. Some people realize it too late, or are trapped by the debt.

Good for going with your gut brother. A lot of Doctors these days appear miserable to me, and the patient care shows it. Coming from
An EMT also in RRT school.

Good for you. I was on the same path over 20 years ago, but decided I needed a break before applying to med school. I found a job in laboratory medicine- which wound up being a great path for me for a number of reasons. I had to lead a team through the pandemic and I remember thinking “man, I’m not a doctor right now”- I’d still be in debt (maybe) and my distaste for the healthcare industry was at an all-time high after 2021. Don’t live in the sink-cost fallacy- listen to your gut. It makes me sad that someone else commented “you don’t want to regret it” if you don’t go back- you have to live with your decisions and you alone know what your gut is telling you to do. It is your life and yes, you only have one life- don’t let ANYONE tell you what you will or won’t regret. Again, healthcare work (especially in the US) is not for the faint of heart- you have to be driven by more than “should and have-to” to keep going in this field. Look at the suicide rate amongst doctors for evidence. Good luck to you in your future endeavors!

You are right, and it goes both ways. I didn’t go when I should have, and now at 30, I am starting premed. Always trust God and listen to your gut! Hope it all works out for you 😊

i had the same realisation, I planned my life around doing dentistry, my advice would be to any one is do as much shadowing as possible, it’s not as glamour as people make it out to be. It’s stressful, hard work, many years of school and debt.
Now I have an existential crisis of what im gonna do next bc of debt

I’m glad you figured out that it wasn’t for you. I feel that the medical school monolith sets a lot of people up to hate their life. We are forced to check so many boxes that it becomes a very fake experience going through life. As soon as you start one task, you are looking at the next box to check.
Almost all of my medical school classmates who did scribing as their medical experience have expressed that they dislike medical experience when clinical application and skills come around.

I'm in a very similar position as you
I'm highly considering quitting as a rising third year
To make it worse, it just destroyed my mental and physical health.
I just hate how medicine consumes my life and leaves me no time to enjoy other things I enjoy
I really regret not exploring other fields before

I felt this way just before midterms and final each semester. Go back and finish the course. You don’t want to potentially regret it.

The saddest thing about this is because you didn’t know what you want the people who accepted you in med school failed to detect that and end up wasting a spot in med school for a more deserving student.

That’s what u got from this ? Do you know that almost half of medical students drop out? Maybe they should give up 50% of the accepted students then according to you smh

😂 what a stupid thing to say. One medical seat will not change the world, get out of that rock you're living under

@@CookWithStephh While the original commenter provided a narrow and insensitive take, your statistic is no where near true... More than 95% of medical students go on to graduate..

People are dynamic.. You can want something at one point in time that you end up not wanting later on. It's reality.
