- Sharla Payne was working the night shift at the Mayfield Consumer Products candle factory in Mayfield, Ky., when a tornado hit on Dec. 10, flattening the building and trapping more than 100 people inside. Her son and a family friend, Timothy Townsend, rushed to the scene to assist with rescue efforts. Read more: wapo.st/3oTF408. Subscribe to The Washington Post on UA-cam: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

It’s not surprising that they’re leaving out the fact that the employees were told, “if you leave, you’re more than likely to be fired”. All employers should be held accountable for making employees stay during severe weather.
@@ammocan2796 nbc news just reported on it, others as well
@@ammocan2796 now almost every news outlet is reporting it. Would you like to defend them further?
Apparently meeting production requirements is far more important than human life.
@@jenniferd2305 yep I’ve been arguing that for years, I’ve been an employee representative for my company for over a decade and an employee for over 20 years. When we have tornado/blizzard conditions, our salary people go home to check on their pets and generators. Then they just stay home while the rest of us are told to take shelter in the bathrooms.
I truly believe that they were told that they would be fired if they left. Why would anyone in their right mind stay. And the that they are 24-7 trying to meet the Christmas Holiday demand. They absolutely were told they would be fired. I smell Lawsuits.
Did the factory boss (who said workers would be fired if they left work east or didn’t appear to work) survive? If so, I wonder how he feels about all this.
They’re denying it but multiple people (workers) are disproving the company. They all need sued or reprimanded, idc. The company is awful.
This storm had days of warning time and was easily to be see on radar, work should of been cancelled.Anybody with half a brain in these high tornado risk areas should know better.
@@ammocan2796 I've spent plenty of time around these parts and places and would have to disagree with that.
It is ridiculous of bosses of companies to put their building, that can be possibly demolished and covered by insurance, above the precious lives that do the work for him/her. I would never comply to a dictator like that. Adults are exa tly that! Not company slaves. No body could ever tell me stay here you are safer in the huge aluminum buildings that are built today . Hell you may as well be standing outside. Anyway who are they to say you can't go make sure your family is safe. I would knock them out and take their keys. After the Joplin tornado alot of us feel that way now!!!
Just leave. Jobs are a dime a dozen if you ant to work
I’m from Kentucky and this breaks my heart to her cry bless her heart . My son is helping with the search and rescue people and he’s already just mentally exhausted so I couldn’t imagine how the people that were actually in the storms are feeling . 😢💔🙏🏻
Here in Mississippi we were helped so much by our neighbors to the North in TN and Kentucky when we had our tornadoes back on April 27, 2011. We have a crew out of Tupelo heading to help in Mayfield and other surrounding cities. We are all family (Americans) and my heart breaks for the suffering that no one deserved. Prayers for your son as well here at such a time of year..Christmas.
@Old Music 1960 thank you for your prayers and for Mississippi sending help to ky. May God bring blessings to you and the great state of Mississippi ❤
@@OldMusic-jl5cw thank you and the wonderful people of your state that coming to help us here you’re all angels may God bless you all always .🙏🏻
Reminds me what happen in new orleans😪
So hard to think of the suffering from this horrific disaster! Praying that people will heal both physically and emotionally.
I cannot comprehend the fear and pain that these people were going through even though we are hit by terrifying hurricanes in Dominica. My prayers to all of you
I'm deeply sorry, prayers are with all of you, stay strong 💐
Other business owners shut down and made their workers go home to be with their loved ones.
Most survived.
Mrs. Payne, take your recovery slow, please. PTSD is what you all will have from this. One minute, you can be fine. The next, you could be yelling, screaming, or crying. This is normal when you recover from trauma. God bless and keep us informed so that we can keep you and the whole group of everyone that has been hit by this terrible storm.
Thank God, I've been praying for you and your family Sharla. I was afraid to message you on FB. I know I should have but I was afraid of what I would find out. I just took a deep breath of relief. I was explaining to my mom who you was. To be honest I didn't know you worked at the candle factory I just knew you lived in Mayfield. I don't get on FB often or I'm sure I would have heard from Gina you was OK. I will keep praying for you, and your family and work family. I'm sorry for the loss of so many of them. May God give you all peace that passes all understanding.
I’m praying 🙏 all my friends mayfield Kentucky.thank you everybody help.god bless you all service members
This is so sad 😢 Mother Nature 🌬 can be so cruel. Prayers to everyone affected by this tragedy.
Yeah mother nature murders all the time. It is sad. Plus the shock even before you do die. OmGod be with those suffering please.
May God bless you all and heal your wounds. Thank God for surviving and let us never forget those loved ones we lost.
God bless you and all involved, I’m so sorry you had to go through this.😢💕🙏🏻
The horror is unimaginable 💔
Could’ve been worst😪
Wow, "up against the wall." WHERE ARE THE SAFE ROOMS???
God Bless You.
Love and light and prayers!
Dear God please wrap your loving hands around all of these people and ease their pain. Bless all those involved.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Amen!!
I don’t recall tornadoes happening in December. Isn’t this a very unusual occurrence?
Yes, it is unusual for our area.
Prayers to all of the people who didn't make it and those who did make it. I hope all who are going through this can keep their heads up. This to shall pass.
*I am not going to buy any products from this company. It appears they chose product over people and as a consumer I won't support that type of corporate behavior. You are located in a tornado prone area and have no backup plan* .
Your voice crying for help..just makes me feel your pain. The toughest parts of life can bring out the best in a person. You will get through this. It's going to take time. Have faith in God and mercy.
Every video on the aftermath chokes me up or brings me to tears, I can't imagine. My heart goes out to everyone effected
Why are they showing us a twig on a tree at 23 seconds next to the factory ? Is somebody trying to say that they don't believe a tornado caused this factory to collapse ? I did notice how strange this collapsed factory looks from drone footage. You see very little to zero debris outside the factory walls. That's unusual in an E4 tornado. 200-300 mile per hour winds usually blow millions of pieces of paper and cardboard outside a collapsed building. Yet one sees almost zero debris in the parking lot or surrounding lawn areas next to this factory . That's highly unusual during an E4 tornado. Also , where's this buildings security cameras to show us all the wind blowing around at the moment the building collapsed ? You know this factory must have dozens of security cameras . Where's that footage ? Even at night time , you'd see the impact of a tornado hitting a factory that large. Where's that footage ? Id like to see it.

The footage was destroyed, obviously
Thank you for sharing my heart bleeds for y'all may God bless you and your community during this difficult time ❤🙏🙏🙏
Prayers to all involved 🙏 especially the victims
Praying for them 🙏💗.
I bought some candles the other day, and before I put them in the cart I looked at them to make sure that they were NOT from Mayfield Consumer Products. This is one company that I could never, ever support. They literally worked these people to death.
That's the America we live in: Profits before people.
That's everywhere!!!!!
I think the owners and supervisors of Mayfield should be in prison for life. Lock them up!
It will be a good terrifying movie about a disaster ..this is a nightmare
Smh 😢
Take care and God bless you all. Don't lose hope, you will be able to recover what you have lost. God bless you all. our prayers for you all, from the Philippines.

So sad
I live in Mayfield and i can tell you, this company is getting sued! They wouldnt let anyone leave before it even happend.
I'm so sorry praying for everyone.
Survivor’s guilt is very common after a tragedy. Please have some help sent to deal with the survivors
I see a huge lawsuit coming
God bless all of you never been through a tornado but lost 2 houses in a hurricane in Houston
*WHY IS NO ONE ASKING WHY EVERYONE WAS WORKING DURING A TORNADO???? EVERYONE KNEW IT WAS OUT THERE!!!*
Stop yelling your post in all caps and in bold.
Heard they would not let no one leave an they worked all the way to 10 min before the tornado hit crazy
They’re too busy playing mental health psychiatrist.
@@robertveith6383 Hey look everyone I found the guy who would make his employees work in a tornado

bunker ?
With a tornado like the one that destroyed the factory raging outside what makes these people think they would have been safer going outside. Before the tornado proved otherwise a gigantic Factory like that would probably be considered a pretty safe place to be during a storm like that. And because of the backward mantality people have nowadays if they were told to go home and leave the factory you can't stay here, then if people died in that process they would blame the company for making them leave and not allowing them stay in the factory where they would in theory be safe.
This just feels so unreal. This reality is weird asf.
Profits over people = capitalism. Let this be a lesson to future employers when severe inclement weather is imminent. The president and CEO are going to be nice, cozy, and alright.
Soo 😥😔😟
I would've been banging on the wall or ceiling making noise
Glad y'all are alright 🙏
This how Corporate America feel about their citizens. Like, how soulless can you be to choose profit over people lives.
Building codes and materials used has to change , this is very sad ,we can't allow this with the current building materials
Prayers for everyone involved on that devastating day.STAY strong through this stressful situation.🙏🙏 rest in Peace to the ones that didn't make it.🙏🙏😇
I hope she gets paid from the Federal at least a year of her earnings so she doesn’t have to work in a factory graveyard shift.
Karma ! let's think about Afghanistan and Iraq

There was no report of this according to the sergeants statement.

Thank God for Biden…he signed the emergency declaration right away. Unlike Trump he needed people to kiss the ring before he would help the people during the California fires. He also was doing the same with the vaccine.
Why was the factory open when there was a tornado alert?? It just seems like candles were considered to be more important than human life.... ???
are u surprised LOL?
Same with amazon but yet you need your packages right??
OMG this is so horrific😔. My heart bleeds for these people what a terrifying experience. Prays to all of you for healing 🙏🙏🙏

The CANDLE factory has become the focal point of this tragedy. This is significant showing to all who have eyes to see and ears to hear how far we are into bible prophesy. The following verse is about the fall of "Babylon the Great"
"And the light of a CANDLE shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived." Rev 18:23
Luke 21:28 - And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
