Another Land Rover Discovery rescued, another budget overlanding build

  • When I found this 1999 Land Rover Discovery 2, is was destitute and bound for the scrap yard. The original owner had obviously taken really good care of it, but it must have become too much for him and it sat for years. I bought it non-running because it was rust free and also for the off-road bits it already had on it. I thought worst case I would pull the good parts off for another project and part out or scrap the rest. Turns out some really simple fixes got this thing on the road again and it’s a great truck. It’s a perfect base for either an off-road or overland build. It’s not destined to be part of the permanent collection, but I’m happy to have given this Rover a new lease on life.

    Well done that man! Lovely condition underneath! Diff's are easily changed but those axles are not as strong as they look.

      Thanks! I think we're gonna run it until the little 4.0 can't go anymore, but after seeing Lost Cause Ranch's LS D2 I am most certainly motivated to make it happen.

    I had 2001 Disco II. It was a fun SUV, but had all the common Disco issues. I had to replace the headliner (did it myself), replaced the sunroof seal to try and fix the leak down the windshield and worst of all, the notorious Three Amigos antilock issue. Tried some of the internet fixes for that one, but never got it sorted out. Needed a vehicle to tow my race car and trailer and tried with the Disco, but it wasn't long enough and felt very unstable.

    Ha! I guess I've been watching way too many videos researching these rigs because I saw the video at the shop lot where they were trying to start it with starting fluid and it wasn't working and I was talking to my screen saying, change out the CPS. Glad it was cheap and easy for ya!

      It seems like you've found some of the Richmond Land Rover UA-camrs haha. There are plenty of enthusiasts here but not too many that have a channel. The car sat for a while before we were able to get to it, but in the end, thankfully it was a simple fix to get it moving again. Thanks for checking in!

    Awesome. Thinking about buying one. Needs work, mostly cosmetic. New engine, head gasket redone, new fuel pump, seems well maintained, maybe some oil leaks, AC needs to be recharged…

      Depends on what you want out of it, but that sounds like a buy to me. If it isn't rusty and has been mechanically maintained, that would make an excellent trail truck - or - you could learn how to do some prep work for the paint and then get a pro to paint it and save a lot of money. Either way, I think I'd bring that thing home!

    • @rvarover

      The front bumper was on the truck when I bought it, I'm not sure of the brand. The closest in style is like a non-winch version of a terrafirma bumper, maybe? The tires are 285/75/16 (about a 33") and the lift is a 2" Old Man Emu. Since yours is a 1996 and a D1, you could find plenty of like parts but the same ones wouldn't fit your truck as do mine. Thank you for watching! I appreciate it!

    • @rvarover
      @rvarover  2 роки тому +2

      Yep, it is all too common that these old Rover V8s have a bunch of issues and can get to be more expensive to fix than their worth. Don’t blame you at all for an LS swap. Might not be economical in the short run but it will probably save a lot of pain down the road.

    I just purchased a 1999 D2 with 135k miles (trailered it home on Friday). Looks like it’s spent it’s life in Dallas. I’ve spent the weekend watching videos and am looking forward to clearing up all the issues its sure to have. Do you have any recommendations? Anything from where to purchase parts, forums to read or quality resources is appreciated. Whatever you think.

    • @rvarover
      @rvarover  9 місяців тому +1

      Oh yeah, there’s tons out there. The D2 is well documented. If you haven’t found him yet, Addicted Motors on UA-cam does mostly Rover stuff. For parts, check out Lucky8, Rovers North, Atlantic British, British Parts of Utah, RovahFarm, Great Basin Rovers… there’s probably more I’m forgetting. Some UK parts places have better selection at times and can get stuff to you just as quickly, like FamousFour, Rimmer Bros, LRParts.net, LR Direct, Paddock Spares, and John Craddock LTD. Forums mostly are DiscoWeb (unsure of how active still, but lots of history), and then Facebook groups. Oh, and get yourself an Ultragauge. Good luck with the new adventure!

    Hey there, just found your channel, awesome stuff. I have a 2016 LR4 and I love it. I'm looking into a Discovery 1 or 2 but I've heard 1999 is the last year they made them as a true Land Rovers. Do you have any recommendations on years or things to look for? Also, do you know any shops that will do a restoration if necessary that specializes in Land Rovers? I live in Ohio FYI. Appreciate the help in advance.

    Greetings from “down under” Just saw what appeared to be an oil stain under the centre of the car. Could be the o ring on the centre shaft in the transfer case. Very common to leak, pain to fix but the most common cause of transfer box failure due to lack of oil. They are a vehicle that you’ve got to admire- make bad drivers look good off road.

    • @rvarover
      @rvarover  2 роки тому

      Hmm, could be - either way, excellent eye! It certainly does look fresh in the video, but with a number of leaky Land Rovers here it's hard to say who the culprit really is. The engine, trans, and transfer case have all had their fluids flushed since the video was made. The front and rear diff are being replaced with lockers so we haven't bothered with them yet. Hopefully more to come on this one this spring!
