I miss watching you. My 28 yr old son was murdered 10 months ago and I forgot music or listening to you, but here i am enjoying the bare exposed drums. Thank dude. It's one if the things digging me out of this hole. love you friend-Karen Ruby So. cal.
Your so kind. Thank you. so certainly in this system of things there is no relief. I really appreciate you kind words.without.This is not the end of life on eArth. I really find genuine enjoyment an soothing for my soul watching you because I love intensely john bonhaM also have little doubt o love SNL and possibly mst3k.
Brilliant.. But John Paul Jones never missed a note ever.. Like a wizard, he is never late, he arrives exactly when he means.. Really enjoyed that sir, thank you
Im glad to see theres someone else just as obsessed with bonham as i am.Hes the greatest. hands down. I idolize his playing so much and i try to always play to where people can tell i have a heavy bonham influence. Its always a chalenge learning his grooves and fills and just his whole style. I have the mans symbol tattooed on my shoulder for gods sake! Im glad to see im not the only one idolizing his playing. its people like u and me that keep bonzos style alive. great videos. great drumming.
Thanks for cracking the code for me on this. Explaining the potential delay on the hats was an "AH-HAAAH!" moment for me. Great clip and much appreciated.
I'm a late baby boomer guitar player, nurtured on L.Z., Z.Z., and Z(appa).. to name a few.. (No zzz's intended) I attempt to coach my 12 year old son about drum beats and grooves. I've always felt that Bonham's grooves sound to the layman, much differently than what is actually going on, which is PURE PERCUSSION GENIUS! Bonzoleum breaks it down like no-one ever has, at least that I'm aware of. Thanks for what you're offering here Bonzoleum dude!
This is great!! Nailed the groove. I think this is why Bonham sounds so good and has so much feel. Just like the Bernard Purdie inspired groove he played this has lots of ghost notes and creates its own echo or call and response. To me that is what Bonham was great at. Invoking a feel and a groove from the bottom up as John Paul Jones describes it. One of the best rhytyhm sections in rock!!! Lots o funk and groove and big band swing influence from these British rock drummers like Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Ian Paice and Ginger Baker. I think this is where Neil Peart was heading after studying with Freddie Gruber.
I love watching your videos. I'm eighteen and John Bonham is my biggest influence but i've only been playing for about 8 months so i'm not exactly able to do all of what your saying. But one day LORD willing.
You definitely have the 'Bonzo Sound' down, but main verse is played with 8th notes on the hats but counted in sixteenth for the bass drum and accents: b= bass s= snare 1 e an da 2 e an da 3 e an da 4 e an da b b s b b b b b s Seeing Bonham's drum transcriptions is a real eye opener. He was a genius fitting drum grooves to Page's twisted guitar figures. He was precise and almost surgical with his fills. An amazing and dynamic techinician!! Rock On!!
3:24 in the studio at the start of the interlude, bonham hit the edge of the cymbals with the sticks, stick and cymbal perpendicular to each other. give it another listen.
I can't get over how crisp your kit sounds, very nice job with the video. Also I know what you were saying about zildjian cymbals and how their bell sounds as opposed to paiste. Most likely explains why I have all zildjians except my ride, 20'' paiste. You explain bonham's techniques very clearly so it was easy to learn, keep it up!
Somebody else posted Bonham's isolated studio track. You can really hear the nuances such as ghost notes. I'm a bassist but I love to listen to Bonham. Love his feel and tone and you sound just like him.
The ghost notes are always on the 'e' or the 'a', so it's the former (RlRl) , but the ghosts only go every so often. Definitely the 'e' of 1 and the 'e' and 'a' of 2. Of couse the 2 is a snare with the left so you get 2 quick snare notes on the 2 and its 'e'.
Thank you so much for breaking this down. Back when Led Zep II first came out we played it to death on a hill in San Francisco. I've been on and off the drums since the mid 60's and 2 weeks ago I bit the bullet and bought the custom Bonham maple kit with the 26 inch kick drum. I don't have the 6-1/2 inch snare, but may make a trade for one soon. I have subscribed to your channel too. :^)
greatfull for the vids you have made. you would not been how much I have increased my level of playing and importantly- COUNTING! which dude- totally makes a difference. your left hand tremor thing, imo makes you play wlol tremendously well. rock n roll brother!
My ex father-in-law played a Ludwig set in high school. He was always a fan of huge kits like what Neil Peart had saying how he could essentially create a whole song on them. But my thing is, if you have 5 piece kit and play it and make it sound huge, who cares about big 9 piece and bigger kits.
To support what you mention about the looping hi-hat section, I think we can hear subtle variation in speed at around 3:10 when it gets back to real time in this isolated drum track Whole Lotta Love (Isolated Drum Track) [HD]
I have been trying to find the exact cymbals used in this song I swear they're so much more different. They don't sound like any cymbal I've researched. It's such a nice, bright sounding crash. Exactly what kind of cymbal I would want.
hey! (on my sisters account) but i just haddd to say, thank you soooo sooo much for this lesson! its gonna help me out alotttt cuz im learning this on drums to play with one of the bands im in ^_^ loll couldn't figure it out!
Start by playing beats (any simple drum beat) with your left hand on the hi hat (instead of your right). Start at a slow tempo and play for as long as you can until your left hand feels funky. Take a break and start up again. Fight the urge to think "This sucks-I can't do it!". KEEP DOING IT. KEEP DOING IT. KEEP DOING IT.
Hi Terry Keating ^_^ Your my best reference for one of those John Bonham grooves you are teaching :D And im happy. Are you Planning to do some drum covers of some famous Led Zeppelin songs lately just for a new change of phase? That would be great ^_^ Thanks Bonzoleum ^_^ ~Charles MAbuhay PHilippines ^_^ Cheer
It's a 26 kick. The ride is a Paiste 404 22 inch RIDE, the crash is an 18 inch Paiste PST 5 CRASH/RIDE. The hats are 15 inch Paiste 505 MED Bottom and an Alpha BAND top.
hey, i love the vid, by the way bub, how d u like the remo sound control toms? i'm thinking about getting a new set of heads and i've been looking at these. genres that i'll play include classic rock, blues, punk, progressive, and maybe country. Just some of ur thoughts would b excellent.
Hey man! I love your videos, I've learned a great deal of how to play Led Zeppelin songs (never dared before, scary to take on any Bonham stuff). But now for the question, do you have any tips on any good exercises top build up the speed on your left hand? For that 16 note feel, it sounds so damn good when you add those in almost any song.
I wanna thank for all that great work you do. Your videos became an inspiration for me to listen to LZ more and grab Bonzo's ideas for my playing. Here the thing - it seems to me that after the part with hi-hat and percussion and some feedback or whatever it is (you start playing it at 4:16 in your video here) Bonzo plays it like a group of four sixteenth notes with snare and bass on 1 & 4 and ghost notes on snare on 2 & 3. Can it be so? Sorry if someone asked this before. Thnx again!
It's just 16th notes 1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a but it starts on the 'e' of 2. So after the last 'boom, boom' on the snare/ft/bass combo (which land on 1 and the 'a' of 1), the snare roll comes in on the e of the following 2 and goes trough to the downbeat. So you have the 'boob-boom' on the 1 and the 'a' of 1 a couple times, then right after the last 'boom-boom' you have : e&a3e&a4e&a (on snare) DOWNBEAT on the 1. Does that make sense? Is that the part you're asking about?
Could never figure out exactly what Bonzo was doing on this groove. I think effects have some "effect", but your pattern and sticking fill it out nicely, and I think could be very close or exactly what he did on this. Thanks.
Hi TERRY IT'S been awhile since I stopped by anyhow thanks for opening my eyes on this song!!! OH YEAH DID THE TECH who setup BONZO"S MICS. DID THEY EVER SETUP ***OVERHEAD*** MICS!!! YOU KNOW THE WAY IT'S A MYSTERY.OF BONZO"S BASS PEDAL 🔊 FOR YEARS!!! I KNOW THAT ALLLLLLL OF US ARE PRAYING TO KNOW THE SECRET!!! JUST WONDERING 🤔
Do you have the transcription of this beat anywhere? I tend to like to read the pattern and then work it up, even though I can play by ear. It is difficult for me to practice a beat to computer.
Terry the outro (after the cymbal tings into the triplet pattern) between the guitar is actually swung as "dagada da" with the emphasis on the first part of 'da' and the 2nd 'da' not "dum dum" as everybody thinks; listen carefully you can hear it on the isolated track. Another typical Bonzo subtlety that is lost under the guitar.
Hi Terry, I'm sure you've heard the demo stems of this song by now. I'm curious as to when it was recorded? It has congas in the long break assumedly played by Bonham.
Your videos absolutely rule!! I loved the Fool in the Rain Video, and based on your video, was able to learn it, and can now play it effortlessly. I was hoping the same result for this one, however you don't break this beat (the main beat)down in as much detail, such as playing each part (Hi-Hat, Bass drum, Snare) separately. So it's hard for me to decipher (I'm really a guitarist) if there's ghost notes on the snare, or exactly what the hi-hat is doing. Bass drum I got. But when I play it, it just doesn't have the same feel as yours, and Bonham's. So, are there ghost notes on the snare? and is the hi-hat just a steady 1-2-3-4....?
Thank you, B-I'm glad it was helpful. Sorry this one isn't as much. Think of the snare ghosts as if you're playing slightly swung 16th with left hand on snare (the es and ahs). It's not ghosted each and every time but enough to convey a slight swung chug a lug. In the drums only thats floating around ( ua-cam.com/video/4dT2YWMqw5A/v-deo.html ) you don't really hear it though.
Awesome lesson! Can you do a tab with ghost notes? i try a lot times slow the video, but i don't understand. And if you are intrested, i have the music track without drums for share!
Just my two cents..between the accented hits during the guitar solo, i think he chucks in ghost notes on the snare! like ONE-e(ghost)-a(ghost)-A and also rather emphasises the accents more on the kick and the tom. Otherwise, great walk through, you do justice do Bonham's groove!
I need to figure out how to do the snare ghost notes!! Do you have a tutorial and explain how to break it down? It's really helpful when you show just the components and then put it all together.
Just to clarify, I'm sure you've all heard versions of this song where the drums lead or the guitar or voice does. LZ was not very disciplined live. It was always better with Bonham leading and setting the tone. Him and the bass player. Then the guitar and voice.
Drums sound great, but you REALLY need a mic - vocals go in and out badly, are almost never leveled with drums, and sometimes are not audible at all. Just a suggestion.
I miss watching you. My 28 yr old son was murdered 10 months ago and I forgot music or listening to you, but here i am enjoying the bare exposed drums. Thank dude. It's one if the things digging me out of this hole. love you friend-Karen Ruby So. cal.

Gosh, your drums sound just like Bonham's. Fab tutorial, thanks Terry.
Interesting regarding that hi-hat loop pattern.

fucking love how you explain it all. so much better than a straight up cover. helps to really get the feel.

thankyou so much. ive been trying to comprehend this beat for my band.
never realized all the ghost strokes in that .....nice !!!
nice drumming, nice kit.

Old 2002? Or something before the 2002
I agree that most Bonham coverers tend to "overbizify". :-D
Love your tutorials.
Everytime ya get that beat going I'm expecting Robert Plant to start singing😀
@nigollllll It would have been sweet to see a Zep show in person. Where did you see them?
I can work with this guy , I like his approach,

this is sooooooo cool, i wanna play like that :D
Thank you Very much !
what kind of sound formula crash is that? sounds great

At shows you'd often see a bevy of Shure SM57 mics (the precursors, actually), and one would be right over the kit- like you'd see at a bar show!
Do you have any kits like this one that has double floor Tom's?
Do you have the transcription of this beat anywhere? I tend to like to read the pattern and then work it up, even though I can play by ear. It is difficult for me to practice a beat to computer.

Bonzoleum, do you know the story behind the bongos / congas solos mixed in? Was it something Bonzo did and layered in?
Or was It someone else?
NICE LUDWIG AMBER VISTALITE!
thanks a ton man
Thank you!
@noisysod Thank you!
Bonzoleum is THE authority in Bonham matters!!!
Bonham was a genius ....
Awesome lesson! Can you do a tab with ghost notes? i try a lot times slow the video, but i don't understand.

Thank You.
There's this really subtle open hi hat part as well if you listen closely

Can someone write drum tab for this song, only rhythm, with ghost notes.....I was looking on google(991 tabs) but is wrong..thnx
hey man are you ghosting on the snare at all there? Or am I hallucinating?
+Patrick Cormier Yes-ghosting many of the 16th's.
I need to figure out how to do the snare ghost notes!! Do you have a tutorial and explain how to break it down? It's really helpful when you show just the components and then put it all together.

You’d be right from 1975 and on, due to Page’s drug use. But from 1968-1973, Page was very clearly the bandleader, and quite a strong one he was.
pleaaaase someone the tabs or the chords!
your tune sounds exactly the same to Bonham
Drums sound great, but you REALLY need a mic - vocals go in and out badly, are almost never leveled with drums, and sometimes are not audible at all. Just a suggestion.
