Completely unique... , i am 20 and i feel disgusted someone can consider it "odd" or "weird", this is art, just pure life into a song that is not even complex, it is simple but perfect, that kid has to listen to so much new selling music that his ears must have become deaf to emotions more than the actual audio, this type of music is for people that listen first with both mind and heart before the ears
No offense to younger generations, but I kinda think this is a song you appreciate more the older you get because you reflect back more vs younger people still have so much more time ahead of them yet to experience.
I'm weeping as I type this,it just touches my soul so much. This precious song has no genre. It simply exists in the immense universe of awe inspiring deep beauty. It begins when the old man dies. It shows his life backwards to let us see what an amazing life he had. The indigenous chanting in the song is Taiwanese and not Native American, though it does esemble their chants. Here are the lyrics for you:: Lyrics Love Devotion Feeling Emotion Don't be afraid to be weak Don't be too proud to be strong Just look into your heart my friend That will be the return to yourself The return to innocence The return to innocence And if you want, then start to laugh If you must, then start to cry Be yourself don't hide Just believe in destiny Don't care what people say Just follow your own way Don't give up and use the chance To return to innocence That's not the beginning of the end That's the return to yourself The return to innocence That's return to innocence. My favourite song of all time gives me shivers hearing it again, My Grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and after he got really unwell he had to be put into a care home, My mum would bring me and my brother over to see him and she had a tape she would put on in the car to probably stop me and my brother from hearing her cry, But this was the first song on that tape and I fell in love with it, Brings back great memories of my grandad when he was well, I never have stopped thinking about him hes always on my mind, I miss you Jim 😥
Thank you for sharing that. I'm sorry to hear that about your grandfather. I'm in the same process right now with my own father; it's not easy... but seriously, thank you for sharing that. 🙏🏻
I was 14 years old when i heard this song or watched in MTV for first time and I liked. I listened Enigmas "Voices of Enigma" when I was 12 and I liked it.
Such an amazing song. I've been an Enigma fan since '91. Just started 11th grade and heard Sadness part 1 on the radio, and was a fan instantly. When I hear Return to Innocence it always makes me think about when we get older. We become more frail and more infant like, in a sense. Then when we pass on and we return to innocence. I love how many others appreciate and love this song as much as I do. Thanks for the reaction. I hope the young man's appreciation grows for this song. Great video.
OMG! I'm 18 and this dude older than me says "weird"?. So sad! Obviously he's an ordinary sheep that just follows the flock 🐑. He didn't even feel anything within himself! He desperately needs to live. I'm younger and now I can uderstand how older people feel, very dissapointed with this generation.
Many may not be familiar with his name, but millions across the globe will recognise this Taiwanese traditional singer's voice. A sample of his plaintive Elder's Drinking Song chant was used by Michael Cretu as the backbone for Enigma's Return to Innocence which went on to become one of Enigma's biggest selling singles. However Cretu had not obtained Difang's permission prior to using the chant which prompted a court-case in 1996 that saw the two settle out of court three years later with Difang being compensated. The controversy around the case propelled Difang into the international spotlight, and Dan Lacksman (whose most famous project had been the first Deep Forest album) approached him to produce an album together. Released by Rock Records Japan in 1998 Circle of Life is a mesmerising combination of Lacksman's usual electronic drumloops, ambient synths and sounds carefully constructed so as not to interfere with Difang's heart-felt singing based on traditional Taiwanese songs of love, work and celebration. Slower, more laid-back beats support songs like Visiting Song and the contemplative Fully Laden with Riches with its tinkling piano instrumentation and Difang's characteristic yodelling calls. However the more upbeat tracks like Love Song (with Deep Forest style lead synth-flute) and Working Song (with its dark string theme) are the real highlights of the album. As an obvious reference to the court-case with Enigma, Lacksman made his own, gentler modernisation of Elder's Drinking Song as well as including the original version of the chant unaccompanied on the CD. With the layered and more reverential sound of Circle of Life we see Lacksman mature as a world music producer, in comparison to his previous outings such as Pangea. Difang was a prominent producer and supporter of Taiwanese aboriginal artists. His last work was to be the solo-outing Across the Yellow Earth in 2001, sadly just as Difang was gaining much-deserved international acclaim, he passed away (blood poisoning due to a centipede bite) in March 2002 at the age of 82. His wife who, whose vocals accompanied Difang's chants, passed away a month later. Hi from the UK! Great reaction video. I remember this when I was a kid in the 90s. This song as a personal favourite of mine and I come back to it often but I do think it becomes more meaningful as you get older and think back. Maybe ill show my son this in about 10 years time and see what he thinks about it. Im sure he will have the same reaction "weird" etc :D
Ok we have this incredible song and music video and the little boy call "weird"... i think you don't leave enough to understand all the meaning behind ( although i loved in a younger age) ... watch again in 20 years 😉
I am 26! Made me tear up few times! The yelling vocals reminds me of Native American chanting! I’m Native American from Canada. I told my dad while driving that this song reminds me of us. They are called Enimga, kinda sounds like mikmaq. Ethnicity is mikmaq First Nations of the northeastern of Canada.

I should've mentioned this in the video (I'm not sure why I didn't)... This may seem a little out there, but bear with me... This song has always reminded me of the morning after Halloween. In my mind Halloween has always been a transitional point, almost like the last night of the year, the day after is always a different feel than the day before. Halloween is such a mysterious and magical night, the day after always has remnants of the fun the night before; the leftover jack-o-lanterns, decorations, etc. Halloween also provides an opportunity to embrace that childhood wonder and, if you're fortunate enough, you can experience through your kids... I'm rambling now, but just know for whatever reason, I associate the "Return to Innocence" with the day after Halloween. I know it's weird, I'm weird, whatever.
