Great stuff! I would highly recommend reading the Unseen Realm by Dr. Michael Heiser, and any of his work really. He specializes in what the bible and ancient world believed about supernatural beings.
I hope Boyd gets this message, and I am sure he may have mentioned it in his book, but the following verse further confirms that God allowed destroying/evil angels to kill and destroy the rebellious Israelites: "He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility-a band of destroying angels." Psalm 78:49 NIV
Appreciate all you say. I still cannot remove God’s right to judge the wicked. A little disappointed you didn’t address Sodom and Gomorrah and the Flood.
Isn’t the “earth swallowing and eating people” a common motif in near eastern literature? If so, instead of needing to find a theological explanation that it couldn’t have been God doing the killing, doesn’t it make more sense to admit the earth didn’t actually swallow anyone?
