Made sense to me, Rufus just has an absurdly thick accent. Apparently he tricked Ladd into a match for $2,000 and will knock his lights out for that $2,000. And Ladd is stupid while Rufus is a clever man who tricked him. At least that's the gist of it... pretty basic but it works.
