Koji Kondo being able to write either the most memorable, catchy melody you’ve ever heard, or just some real unsettling evil shit like this speaks to the man’s talent.
I like how in most of majora's mask ost, there's a constant uninterupted low note or hum under the songs themselves. It's not always easy to hear but it exists and it's why the soundtrack feels...off. unsettling. There's only a handful of songs it doesn't seem to be there but there's no telling if it was intentional or an exhausted oversight.
Yeah the Shadow Temple and Bottom of the Well are dungeons that are...well, designed to be actual dungeons with prison cells, traps, torture devices, even some blood on the walls and floor at times. And the dichotomy is even better when you know that these locations are connected to a lively and peaceful little village.
Oh, thing is the Well is the first part of the dungeon, they're gameplay-wise separate dungeons but story-wise they're two parts of an entire necropolis-slash-torture chambers
fun fact: the bongos that appear in this song are theorized to be the boss of the dungeon, bongo bongo, who you fight on top of a giant drum. really eerie imagining him banging on the drums deep underground.
Shadow Temple is my favourite temple of Ocarina of Time, it ALWAYS spooked me and gave me chills but there’s so much lore behind Shadow Temple which makes it so much more amazing
Місяць тому+3
This place was a litteral chamber of horrors in Ocarina of Time. Its ment primarilly to be a training ground for the Sheika Clan, who are basically a ninja clan in service to the Hylian royal family. Its also ment to serve as a allegory for taking the dead souls of the royal family to the afterlife as theres a direct reference to the River Styx in this place too. However during the Hyrulea Civil War the place served as a means to torture information out of people, and once they got what they needed, the sheikah would entomb their captives as denizens of the temple. THough some lore suggests the Shadow Temple as well as the well were once taken over by agents of the enemy faction in the war which makes the potential horror even worse especially since the boss of the temple looks as if it was apparently beheaded by guillotine while it was alive.
I have to put my hand up for the Spirit Temple. It's one of the only "temples" in the game that truly feels sacred, and the music is a big part of that. Like you shouldn't touch anything if you don't want an ancient curse put on your bloodline.
Ah. The Shadow Temple. I remember my first playthrough of OoT. It was so jarringly different. Everything about it was unsettling, giving you this sort of ethereal dread. The information about the royal family and the atrocities they committed. Invisible blade traps. Horrifying undead. Pools of poison. A clear parallel to the river Styx toward the end as it brings you to the depths of the temple. Bongo Bongo... kind of a goofy looking boss, but I get what they were going for with the whole no head, hands separated from the arms, essentially a representation of a being having been subjected to a guillotine. By far the most horrifying thing on my first experience was the damn Dead Hand miniboss. Hated those things.
It is also theorised that Bongo Bongo was a prisoner inside the Shadow Temple, after suffering such awful torture and punishment, he died and came back as an evil spirit(Bongo Bongo)
The Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple are technically the same place. With the Well being sort of the Shadow Temples front entrance way and when you get to where the temple should start you find the way is blocked and sealed.
Man I really felt this song make me feel so unconfortable when I was like 8 years old in the 2002 when I played it, even today is unsettling, I really liked the temple mechanics and stuff, but god damn, just be in those places where this song was played was such a "oh man I dont want to go there again"
Kakariko Village, while a place where anyone can live at the time the game takes place, was originally the Hidden VIllage of the Sheikah Tribe. This was during a time when Hyrule was embroiled in a brutal war. People call it a civil war, but I don't think that's right considering the line from the game 'before the King of Hyrule unified this country'. Now, the Sheikah Tribe is a clan of ninjas bound to service of the Royal Family of Hyrule by edict of the Goddess Hylia. The Royal Family of Hyrule is descended from the Goddess Hylia by the way, so this is kind of a big deal to the Sheikah, who originally served her directly. The Shadow Temple was where the Sheikah Tribe did their dirty work. Specifically, they interrogated and then executed prisoners of war, traitors, assassins, and other such individuals. As for the Well, the game just treats it as something of a precursor to the Shadow Temple, what with the same ambiance (the well dungeon has not only the same music, but the same design aesthetic). You just go there to get a magic item called the Lens of Truth that allows you to see through illusions, and then leave. But I think at one point in development, the Well was going to be how the player gained access to the Shadow Temple, with the Lens of Truth revealing the 'secret entrance'. Mind you, that's just speculation on my part. The only real connection the Well has to the identity of Kakariko as a Sheikah Village is that the Lens of Truth is in the shape of the Sheikah Tribe's insignia.
Nice. I associate this more with Shadow Temple, but its very fitting for the well also since they're somewhat connected. Majoras Mask does come after Ocarina and on the whole is certainly the spookier game. Looking forward to when you hear more Zelda!
The bongos are diagetic :) The Zelda ZREO version of this is really cool. There’s much more of an emphasis on the drums, and the constant rhythm somehow makes it spookier
GREAT GAME to pull pieces from, and Shadow Temple is a good candidate. Very forboding, very atmospheric. Really hammers home the feeling of "you were dead when you stepped over the threshold."
The Shadow Temple and the Well are linked by virtue of needing an item from the Well to do the Temple and they're both accessible from Kakariko Village. So, they're linked even beyond both using spooky theme.
so, the boss of the shadow temple is called "Bongo Bongo" so the percussion sort of stalking you is very apt, the well is "closely related" to the shadow temple so hearing the percussion in there too also works really well you should look at the concept art of bongo bongo, let's say that his design reflects what the good guys used to do in that place very well oh and also look up zelda dead hands those are also enemies from they and oooh boy, they inspired the creation of the false hydra so looking that one up is also good enough to get the idea
This reminds me of the one year I tried using spooky video game music for the Halloween playlist. Family was not a fan, so we're just sticking to Monster Mash, Thriller etc. 😅😆
This place + the music evokes such a bad feeling that might aswell be some kind of Silent Hill type place but in the Zelda universe. It's a dungeon filled with spooky enemies, torture/execution devices, blurry n64 blood stains and very dark lore behind it. I learned about all the background as an adult but no wonder it creeped me so much as a kid. "It feels like something is crawling up on you". Spot on, the place is filled with these creepy giant hands that fall from the ceiling to take you away, they make a very similar sound (wich is the only way to tell they are about to attack you), so the music kinda makes you paranoid about them. Between the Wallmasters and the Dead Hand mini boss, this place can go screw itself, seriously.
GREAT song. 2nd Zelda song that comes to mind when you think of spooky songs. I HOPE they also recommended Ikana Valley from Majoras Mask. Thats definitely the number 1 song that comes to mind when you think Zelda and spooky
The Zelda games are obviously not horror games by any means, but some parts of a few of them really might make you question it lol. This song especially in context gives some chills.
Spooky themes? Hmm...that's a difficult theme direction to guess tracks to because it's not the sort of music I actively listen to a lot. Let's see: 1. [River Twygz Bed] - [Super Paper Mario] It's the first thing my Nintendo OST hivemind tries to amplify next to... 2. ["Luigi Humming"] - [Luigi's Mansion] Not sure if that's the correct title but I think everyone who has heard it, knows what I mean. 3. [Lavender Town] - [Pokémon] It's a classic and with sooo many Remakes (since Gen2 also has Kanto in it) there is enough variety That would be my blind guesses. Let's see if I got a hit^-^ ... .. . ... Random shot in the dark that might make it due to recency bias but probably not because it's too niche: [The Smiling Man] - [Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club]
The Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple are 2 locations where it shows that Nintendo can get really dark when it comes to the lore of their games. The Shadow Temple in particular. The story behind it is that is was used as a prison during a civil war where prisoners of war were detained, tortured and executed in secret by the Hyrule's royal family. The interior of the Shadow Temple tells you that they did not hold back in those practices.
A lot of people who grew up with this game were terrified of the Bottom of the Well where this song plays and this song definetly doesn't help lol. In the original game theres Zombies, floating skulls, fake floors and walls, torture devices, blood on the floor and walls everywhere. The song goes real well with the setting as its unnerving and terrifying. To cap it all off is a boss whom I can only describe as an eldritch horror or a ridley scott creature. lol good times good times lol
As a kid, I hated both the well and Shadow Temple. XD I thought they were neat but I was always so scared to get through them properly. I struggled with the Well, but never beat the Shadow Temple myself until I was older. A friend had to take my controller and get through the dungeon herself before tossing it back at me (literally) for the boss fight, 'cause she refused to fight the boss for me, too. XD LUCKILY, I could do that much, haha.
Yeah the Bottom of the Well is just as spooky of a location, if not more so than the Shadow Temple. So the song is very appropriate for both which are intended to be the more horror themed dungeons. Although in fairness, the music of the Forest Temple I think actually sounds spookier. 😅
OoT was my first taste of horror games as a kid. The 3d zeldas really lean into it the 2d topdown ones do as well if you stop and think about it but the cartoony graphics tend to override how dire the events are.
Well, if you want an amazing 'spooky' theme for the vibes section I would highly recommend Alundra's 'Nightmare'. I think it's a contender for scariest sounding song in all of gaming.
The well and the shadow temple are both in Kakariko village. The well must be completed before doing the Shadow Temple (without glitches). Both are equally terrifying and worthy of this song
The well is just for the Lens of Truth which, while very helpful, is not required in the Shadow Temple. The entrance puzzle can be brute forced and invisible platforms can be traversed without it (Bombs and Bombchu's can be used to give an approximation of the size and shape of invisible terrain). The only tricky parts are invisible Hookshot targets. The Lens of Truth is only ever required for progress in Majora's Mask.
@@turtersvongenbu While technically true, you have to either memorize some things, have a guide, or be _really_ determined/persistent/stubborn in order to do a lensless run. Sure the Shadow Temple can be brute-forced, but what about the path of the Phantom Guide?
The Shadow Temple was the only temple I couldn't get thru as a child on my own. The music didn't help at all. 😩I had to get my brother to finish this temple for me.
Fun fact: In 2015, GameFAQs hosted a poll for what games considered the best game of all time. Generally when these polls are made, Ocarina of Time wins on top as the best game. However, a massive outlier came in out of nowhere and people all around weren't happy with Ocarina of Time being topped by a brand new game that didn't even compare with most of the games on the list. That game was Undertale, in case you were wondering. I don't know about any further polls that were made on the site, or if Ocarina of Time retained its slot, but that particular poll got a lot of traction in news articles because of how unprecedented the reaction to Undertale was when it released. (And admittedly, there are some people who say that a number of voters were just voting UT for the memes, but I do think that genuinely a lot of people were moved by the game)
I wonder if anything from kirby got on here... although "terrifying" might not be what you're after. Mostly just too energetic, except for pitch black horror/valley, which despite its name, is a fun time, yet spooky.
A shame you didn't do Nocturne of Shadow. It's one of the ocarina melody in the game and that one is tied to the Shadow Temple. Each "Temple" has their own associated ocarina melody which warps you to that Temple's location, so if you react to another Temple song from OoT, keep in mind to look up their associated ocarina melody as well (unless you don't want them spoiled).

Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred.
Never realized the bongos are hinting at the boss. Also, more than soundtrack this is just ambience to make you uneasy. Works great in-game.
