Hi SonoGes fam! ✨
Welcome back and thank you for clicking on this video!
If you are new here, WELCOME!
We hope you have a happy and PAWSitive experience!
My name is Geselle and I am an ultrasound technologist based out of Las Vegas. I am per diem, work two jobs, and currently work in a hospital and outpatient clinic.
We are back with another video which is on a very frequently asked question! I hope to answer any confusion you have when it comes to ultrasound registries, board exams, and different specialties. There are tons of different specialties in the field of ultrasound, but just because you aren't registered in one, doesn't mean you won't scan that particular type of ultrasound. As a sonographer, depending on which school you went to, what clinicals taught you, and which field you're going into... you will be able to specialize in certain types of exams after taking the ARDMS specialty board exams. In order to take these specialty board exams, you must pass the SPI exam, and in order to take the SPI exam, you must go to an accredited or non-accredited associates or bachelors sonography program! Wow, was that a lot or what?! Stay tuned for this video and stick around for the whole thing because there is a TON of information for the sonography student and future sonographer in here!
I hope you leave this video with a better understanding of how the ARDMS board exams work and how the sonography field works. I am a registered sonographer in abdomen and vascular, but I still scan everything in the body, including OB and GYN patients... (except for the heart). This video will explain it ALL to you! And if I missed anything or if you have any questions or need clarification, please comment down below!
Thank you so much for watching and I'd appreciate it if you hit that like button and subscribe for more videos! Help us GROW the SonoGes fam!!!

Literally spent HOURS on google (with almost no results) trying to look up all this exact information that you had in a detailed, short video. Thank you so much for all the effort you put in your videos. ❤️
Wow, I appreciate you saying that. Such kind words! I know it's a lot to figure out, but it definitely will make sense as school goes by. Thank YOU for watching and supporting the channel. I do this for you guys!
Hi just recently watched your video, i'm a Registered Nurse from the Philippines and currently working as a 2D Echo tech. Is there a chance for me to take the ARDMS or do i need to be a USRN first?
that's awesome! what you have to do is checkout the requirements on ARDMS.org and speak with someone who can help point you the right direction!
Im only about 9 mins into the video but so basically what ur saying is before i can apply to take any board exams i have to pass the SPI first?. i kind of got confused when you started talking about RDMS and other stuff but i just wanted clarity on what should be taken first idk if this is a dumb question
15:28 nvm LOL
appreciate you so much for watching -- what I know is that you have a 5 year rule to take SPI and a specialty within 5 years !
Hey !! I've done BS Honors medical imaging Technology from Pakistan. Can i apply for ARDMS exam ??
Hi! Use ARDMS.org to see if you meet the pre-req requirements to take the exams!
Taking a break from physics to watch this😩
Take that well deserved break! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I live in Vegas and just found your channel. Where did you go to school?
I went to UNLV 🙂
Could the one physician sign up two verification forms?
Yes, if they believe you are qualified to take the respective exams.
Literally was kinda stressing earlier about this cause i wand to do this so bad but there feels like there are so many options
Aww don’t stress! All you have to do is choose a pathway- general, vascular, and echo. Some general program include vascular and some echo programs include vascular. So that’s your first step to choose! ❤️
hi :) I have question, can I take an SPI exam here in the Philippines?
hello! I'm not sure, you probably can. Check at ARDMS.org to see if you are able to!
When it comes to sonography, you are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you BroEd✨ you’re so sweet. Just want to help others succeed!
You’re the best!!!
Not sure what I’ll end up specializing in or if I’ll just get every registry I can.. probably going to go with that hahaha but, I appreciate all of your insight ❤️
Girly!!!! You’re the best!! Thank you for always watching and trying to better your future! So proud of you! Always rooting you on 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Beautifully explained 🤗 we had to do a group project about ARDMS,ARRT etc..so we could learn about them lol
Hey cutie!! Thank you for being here and watching hehe. Appreciate you for giving me feedback!!! Seeing you in the comments makes me so happy! I’m glad your school did that!! Lol. Many don’t! 🥴
Very clear and detailed info! Thanks a lot! Future RDCS in da house!!! 😄
Thank you girly!!! AYEEEE let’s get it! Can’t wait to see you thrive in echo! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
Hello my love.God bless you always mhuaahh.
Mwahhhh thank you for being here!!!❤️❤️❤️
Can't wait !! I always am curious of all the route options among this career ! I love learning new things 💯❤💕
Yay!!! I hope it gives you more insight ❤️✨
Hello mam,
I am from Bangladesh and I have plan to pass ARDMS so that I can work in USA as a registered sonographer.
A. Can my professor sign in my CV? B. Which books do you prefer for
1. SPI
2. Ob and GYN
3. Pediatrics
4. Abdomen
That's awesome! As long as the person who signs your CV form also has the registry and can attest that you know what you're doing then the professor should be fine.
I always recommend Edelman and Davies books! Also the RED Penny book for abdomen/ OBGYN and the pediatric sonography book by Siegel!
Hi kindly find me some resources for MSk resources for ardms
Hi! There is an MSK sonographer on UA-cam and many on instagram. They probably have a lot of resources! You can never go wrong with URR (ultrasound registry review) and Edelman Seminars/workbooks.
@@lolgeselle most appreciated. Bravo 👏 for all the good works.
I've missed this Premiere sissykoy ❤️ I'm now watching.
aww, no worries, thanks for being here sissy! I appreciate you so so much!
Awesome video girl!! Quick question, does getting more registries affect pay at all?
thanks girly!! it depends on the place you work at, but yes some offer more $$$ per registry!!! definitely is an incentive to ask for higher pay.
@@lolgeselle haha I wondered because it seems like a lot more work to get multiple. Thanks for letting me know!!
@@AngeliqueSabrina yes it's definitely a LOT of work, EXTRA money (because these exams are expensive and the materials just as expensive), and while it's not required to be specialized in more than one, it makes you a more well-rounded sonographer and more pleasing to the eye on a resume! Hehe (plus bragging rights).
how does malpractice insurance work? and professional liability insurance? do i need to buy it already before i work? my employer force me to buy it or tell me to go buy it they buy it for me?
hello, many sonographers don't have malpractice insurance, I believe that's mostly for doctors.
EST time zone does not match with these premieres 😭 I was knocked 😴 out at 9 yesterday haha. Thank you for clarifying this for so many people! You were very thorough and in depth :)) it was super helpful!
Wahhhh!!! I know!!! I’m glad you’re getting your sleep tho, DAS IMPORTANT!!! Proud of you! And thank you for watching I appreciate you! ❤️
Another amazing video that I’ll have to share with my students interested in health careers 😍 Geselle always comes in hot with sonography facts
Angel, thank you so much for always supporting 😭 you’re amazing!!! Trying to help the world of sonography be more comprehensible! 🤍
My school will cover general and vascular. Is general ob/gyn? If not, what does general cover?
General includes- the abdominal cavity, pelvis, and small parts like breast and testicular. Vascular includes veins arteries of the legs and arms. 🙂 You will typically learn OB/GYN in a general program, and at your clinical sites.
Another great video!!! Geselle what you are saying makes perfect sense. I also like the examples and scenarios you give too. I'm loving the general steps and process you are explaining too its such useful and informative information to have for newbies like me.
Akienlee🤍 I appreciate you so much for your feedback!! I was afraid the video wouldn’t be understandable.. I just babbled a lot lol. But I really did put lots of information in here so it makes me so happy you watched and got so much out of it! Keep working hard and achieving your goals! 💘
Thanks for all the info Geselle!
Of course Jackie!!! Thank you for always supporting 💘
Cute jacket
Heheheh someone cute showed me it 😉
This was so helpful. I'm debating between two programs right now and this made everything make so much more sense! THANK YOU!!!
Thank you Aspen I am so glad to hear that! Good luck!!
Im looking into doing Sonography, but im still a little confused on what I should do. I heard you can do Certificate, Associates and Bachelors. I don't think im going to do Bachelors but im between Certificate and Associates. What do you recommend? If theres one specific program I want to do for example RCDS, would Certificate be the way to go or should I go for Associates and do RDMS? Thanks.
If you don't care for going into upper management or teaching/ getting a MBA then the associates would be better for you. If you already have a bachelors or associates degree, a certificate may be the better route. It all depends on you and the cost of the certificate/degree.
I am currently taking the pre requisite the human anatomy and physiology. I'm doing my best but it so hard to get perfect score in every quizzes and it frustated me a lot.I love studying human anatomy because it really interesting and informative but its not easy to memorize every single pages of the book.
I’m glad you’re taking this class!! It’s definitely difficult and hard but you’ve got this! It’s truly amazing, the human body!! Give yourself study breaks! You can do it!!! ✨
Drawing the anatomy helps!
Awesome video!! You break things down so clearly so I understand! I really appreciate you for giving such detailed information. I can’t wait to get started in my program
YOU are AWESOME! Thank you so much for watching the video and leaning into learning more!!! I’m rooting for you!!! 🥳❤️
When i took that spi boards exam, i about threw up i was so nervous and then ending up doing the best out of all the registeries i’ve taken.
wow!! spi was definitely hard for me!! but look at you go, you did amazing!
Hello
I have cleared SPI on 23rd May 2022
and Abdomen on 6th sept 2022 and
on my ARDMS portal it says passed but my status verification and certificate has not been updated . Should i wait?? Does it take this long??
Congrats on passing! There may be a backup but contact ARDMS.org for any questions!
Hi question if a school is accredited is ARDMS and not CAHEEP can you still take the registry’s?
If the school is NON accredited there are a few ways you can still take ARDMS. You have to ask the school what the steps are. Check out ARDMS.org for pre-reqs to the registries. You can also ask your school directly if you can sit for ARDMS and what their process is for it.
❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
How many months did you study for each board exam? I am stressed between choosing between OB and Abd
I studied for at least 2-3 months prior to.. choose the one you feel more comfortable with!
In your experience, do people who attend trade school vs universities/community college obtain the same job outlook? Do all of your co-workers in the hospital have a BS degree? I'm switching careers and only have an AS. Due to time I'm going the trade school route because 1. I couldn't get into any of the community school classes I needed. 2. For many of the community school program they have an expiration on the science portion, which I took years ago. I was just curious if this limits my job prospects because of it.
Many people come from all different schools, in my experience. Lots of people have associates, I know a lot who also have bachelors. Truly it’s not about what you know, but who you know. Networking will ultimately help you in this field. But as long as you are a registered sonographer that’s what jobs are looking for!
@@lolgeselle thank you!
@@unknownt5391 you’re welcome! I enjoy answering your questions!
@@lolgeselle Hahaha, sorry I keep bothering you. It's a huge career change for me, so I'm somewhat freaking out. After my info session I may still change my mind. It's hard to start over.
@@unknownt5391 you’re not a bother at all! I’m glad you’re asking all the questions before switching over!
Hello, Thank you for sharing this video, it is great. I am an MD from Argentina and I am thinking about taking SPI exam studying by myself. Do you know where can I apply for an Intership?
Thank you again
That’s awesome! I would check on Facebook groups :)
Hi! Great information. Thank you! I have a question. My daughter is looking at a school that is not CAAHEP accredited but they do give you the SPI exam and the ARRT and then you can get your ARDMS certification. Does that sound legit to you? I don't want my daughter going to this school if it won't get her the correct certifications and she won't get hired anywhere. Thanks for any help!!
Hi there! If the school allows you to sit for SPI, ARRT, and ARDMS that’s fine just need to be aware of the extra steps needed :) also I recommend talking to students who have been to the school before to share their experiences.
Currently I pass my spi exam, can you tell me what book should I study for abdominal specialties exam?
Congrats on passing SPI! You can use the red penny book, it's located in my description boxes and can be purchased from amazon.
I currently have a Bachelors of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Psych. Can I go straight into these exams or do I need to go back to school for sonography? I am interested in neuro sonography, fetal sonography, and/or Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonography. Help! 😮💨
Hi! You'll need to go to a program that will allow you to sit for ARDMS and get registered in RDMS :) That way you can scan! You can do a certificate program since you already have a bachelors. CAAHEP.org can help!
So you have to take diagnostic medical sonography course to obtain the vascular sonography certification?
Not necessarily. If you are a doctor you can also take the ARDMS test to get certified. Go to ARDMS.org to see who can get the registry.
Hi, what if my program doesn’t have ARDMS upon graduation but CCI instead?
CCI is good! You can take that and eventually get the ARDMS registries afterwards.
@@lolgeselle thank you so much
I don't know what to do as I'm a foreigner's physician in Viet Nam. I don't know how to apply for the test, and meet the requirements. Can you give me more information?
ARDMS.org will be your best bet! :)
I was hoping u would go on the topic of non CAAHEP schools. You said that is for another vid, did u happen to make that yet? I scrolled through ur vids but didn't see anything about it
Hi!! I have spoken about this in multiple videos! What kind of specific question do you have?
Hello, I am an IMG graduate and recently came to US, I want to become an ultrasound technologist like u, what r my options and what should I do? Weber to go and how to start and how much time I need to study?!
I have no idea plz can u direct me🙏
Hi!! That’s awesome! Go to CAAHEP.org and ARDMS.org for information about schools and certifications/ registries! You will need to find a program that fits you best!!
These programs take 2-4 years. Finding one near where you live can be tough but doable! Be ready to relocate for a program that fits you! There is a general route, which includes OBGYN abdomen and small parts, and then an echocardiography route, and a vascular route. I have more videos on my channel on this process that can help you out!
@@lolgeselle thank you so much!
hi! i’m registering for my senior year in high school, and i really wanna be an ob/gyn ultrasound tech. are there any classes i should take for that?
Hi!!! That’s awesome! Definitely anatomy and physiology is important. Also physics! If you can get any college credits that may transfer that’s also good too!
@@lolgeselle thank you so much! 🥺 is there one i should prioritize in case i can’t get those three?
Thank you so much! This video is so helpful! I’m on my way to request you on FB Groups (:

Thank you for the detailed video . This literally answered all my questions .
Thank you so much for watching, glad it helped!!!
Kindly make a video for the International graduates who have done their degree in medical imaging technology.
ok I'll see what I can do!
How does one apply without prior knowledge of the medicinal field into the certificate program. Does it matter by states? Depends on where you are or is all the same?
It depends on the school! CAAHEP.org can help you!
How long should i wait to take the ardms after completing the arrt?
www.ardms.org/wp-content/uploads/pdf/ARDMS-General-Prerequisites.pdf
It’s under prereq 5, it just says you need to have a copy of your active license, completed cv form, and your Id to sit under that prereq. So I’d assume as soon as you have a copy of your license and the completed form you can apply for it
Soooo if you've earned an R.T. as an xray tech, and are certified , you can then go into the specialities ???
You have to be certified in ARDMS or CCI. X-ray tech is a different modality.
This was super complicated for me haha, not my field at all😆 (so many words I don't know)
Lol!!!! Thanks for taking a jab at watching 🤣😅
@@lolgeselle Yes I tried it again haha. Much respect for you:)
@@msterdam appreciate you!! Means a lot when non sonography people stop by hehehe 🥰
So can do this without going to school? It was talked about at work and I am just confused. Do I have to go to school or what?
Hi! You have to go to a program and take the ARDMS board exams to become registered. Either a private, public, associates, or bachelors degree. There’s a certificate route but that’s if you already have a degree.
Hi, very nice of you to share your experiences with us. May I have a question, I have passed OBGYN, so do you know where can study clinic scan skills? Hope to hear from you! Very appreciated.
Hi! You'll have to look around depending on your city. I suggest looking at linked in or sonography Facebook groups.
Hi Giselle! Love your videos on sonography. I’m currently in my program & took a break and am going back in a few weeks. I have a question about the pathway to be able to sit for my registry. Is the cci registry a legit thing? Because with my school I would have to take the cci registry first and then I’d qualify for ardms. I just want to know if the cci organization is legitimate lol. If you know the answer to this question I’d love to hear back! Thanks :)
Hi there! Yes CCI is another credentialing board 🥰
POSTTT😭
Ahhh soon tomorrow night at 7pm!! Did you have any questions I could answer now?
After you take the SPI do you have to take all the specialty exams or do you choose them?
You get to choose which one you take :)
If I wanted to go the RDCS route, because that’s what I would like to specialize in. Would the boards only be for that specific specialty or would I have to take the boards for all the others? Please inform me on the easiest way to handle this.
If you want to do RDCS, you will go to a cardiac/echo program. Take ultrasound physics. Sit in for SPI. Then sit for the cardiac/ echo board after you graduate and then be specialized in RDCS.
Hi just wondering is Davies what you used to pass your ardms for rvt?
I used Edelman vascular work book, x-zone, and Davies 🥰
Hi👋🏽 how do I make sure I am able to practice sonography in every state?
Hi!! Be registered in ARDMS. But there are a few states that have different rules. You can find that on ARDMS.org
My program is Accredited by ABHES and not CAAHEP would that still matter ? Or just as long as it’s accredited?
What matters is you need to ask that program what your requirements are to take ARDMS (and SPI) board exams.
@@lolgeselle they said I’ll still be able to take my spi while still a student and they are currently getting accredited by CAHEEP
Thank you Giselle for the clarification about both organizations ,also Thank you for accepting to FB group. I just got in cardiac program and I feel like I have a lot of anxiety as I got of homework also exams etc.( you know)

💘💘💘
So is it best to have general sonography so that you are aware of all areas of the body vs. Specialties?
You have to go into general to learn all of the body, vascular to learn just vasculature of the body OR go into echo/cardiac just to do the heart. :)
I just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos. I was worried about these exams and I had no clue what they were. I’m applying to the echo sonography program in May so I’m very glad I have more knowledge on this topic beforehand! Thanks again I really appreciate it😊
Alyssa!! I want to say, thank YOU, for watching the videos and commenting! So proud of you for doing research! And yay that’s sooo exciting! I believe you can, I would say check out ARDMS.org for more information on that! And you can probably contact them too!
@@lolgeselle thankuu dear and once i clear abdomen exam can I get a decent job in America as foreigner will they prefer me
Nope I havent completed my internship yet
Which registry is best? As in work wise and pay wise.
They're all different. It depends on what you enjoy scanning the most. Pay wise people say neurosonography however that's usually tied into general/vascular in a hospital setting. I believe vascular and echo do really well. But general also does really well in some states. Just depends where you live. I would do a search in the city you want to work in. Working as a per diem tech will pay more. Pay doesn't necessarily have to do with the type of job but the experience you have.
@@lolgeselle Is there a difference between RVT and RVS?
Fount out about a CCI exam I can also take, different from ARDMS
im curious... so if i was registered as an rdms in general, you say it’s possible to get certified in echo as long as you get signed off and sponsored by someone in order to take the rdcs certification exam, but where/who would you go to get this sponsorship ?
It is possible, but you have to find someone willing to teach you cardiac. I’d say most small cities and towns are better for this option. Let’s say you work in a hospital setting in general and are curious about echo, talk to the echo department and supervisors. But that is correct, it’s called “cross training” but in order to sit for the RDCS, someone has to sign you off and acknowledge you are competent and you have scanned enough echos.
@@lolgeselle ahhh that makes a lot of sense lol thank you so much!! your videos are so helpful 😇

I was able to take a specialty exam before the spi. What happens in that case?
Which specialty exam did you take? That’s interesting ☺️
@@lolgeselle I took adult echo. I was told they give you a time frame to take the SPI after the specialty registry .
@@JM-oo7uw might be different for adult echo! Because you can’t take abdomen, OBGYN, pediatrics, or vascular without SPI 😌
How long does it take to renew your license and specialties?
Registries are good once you take them, forever. But you have to pay a fee yearly to keep your registries in good standing. You also need 30 CMEs every 3 years. Registry exams and seminars count for a certain amount of CMEs.
@@lolgeselle Another question, do you have to transfer your license to move to another state?
@@TheSolsticeShop nope your registry will be able to be used in any state! There are a few states that require a specific state license but go to ARDMS.org and it’ll give you all the information!

How long do you have to go to school ?
Can range from 2-4 years sometimes more if you get put on a waiting list or have to retake classes. ✨
Well, friends. I got an email this morning saying I didn't have sufficient points to be admitted into my DMS program. I'm actually kinda bummed.. what do I do now, yunno? 🙁
Any way you can increase your points? If you need to retake a class or if you have an admissions test, go for it! There's tons of applicants who didn't get in their first or even second time. I'm currently waiting to hear back and if I'm not accepted, I'll be retaking my test and applying again. Also look into surrounding programs if possible (:
Yes like Jackie is saying, retake classes during this time save up money while you're waiting to reapply, retake tests to get higher scores. A lot of people don't get in on their first try so don't let that discourage you. Don't give up.❤❤❤❤
Juanita, it’s okay to be bummed I totally get it! I’m so sorry that’s happening. I know it’s hard but definitely try to look at the brighter side. I believe everything happens for a reason. Definitely try to talk to the counselor or admission peeps and ask them what could you do better for next application process or what are things they can suggest you do to in order to get in the next time! It’s always hard to get in on the first try, if you show them you’re passion and willing to try and do what you can to get in, they will definitely see your strength and perseverance! If you don’t want to wait you can also see if you can apply to other sonography programs that will take your classes. But if this is something you truly want, I’d say don’t give up and try to find other ways you can keep moving forward toward your goal! We’re here for ya. 🤍
Don’t be discouraged! There’s a lot of students who don’t get in on their first try. Are you able to retake a class or test to increase your points? You can definitely keep trying! This can give you more time to work on a specific class to get a higher grade or a test to get a higher score!
Thank you all for the words of encouragement, I really appreciate the kindness! I will be talking to an advisor next week to discuss possible ways I could increase my points for next year. Thank you guys for being here for me, love you all! ❤❤
What do you recommend as some of the best study materials for the RVT exam??
Edelman, Davies, and Sonographic Tendencies! :)
URR always is a great resource.
Thank you 👍🏻 very helpful!
