Honestly, I really hate this movie. It ruined Thor and his whole mythology for me by turning everything into a stupid joke. Fun fact: the music the women sang when Matt Damon's Loki "died" on the play is the exact track that played when Thor was in grief for him in the second movie.
One thing that people don't realize is that when Thor throws his hammer at Hela, he's not forcing it toward her and she's holding it back. The initial throw, yes, but after that, Thor's trying to bring the hammer back, and she's holding onto it. In the previous scene with Loki, Thor sais that there's nothing that can stop Mjolnir from returning to his hand. It's foreshadowing for Hela. You can even see the strap of the hammer pointing toward Thor as if it's pulling back to him. I think that's clever.
@@canadian__ninja Yes, that's what I said. Most people think she's stopping it from hitting her, but in actuality she's stopping it from returning to Thor.

Hulk has only been "alive"/in the hulk form for a few years if we combine the moments he turned into hulk, so he has the mental development of a child in that regard (which is why he can only say a few words and is always angry). Now that he's been Hulk for multiple years on this planet, he's developed more, learning basic sentence structure and having a little more control over his emotions. Remember that Hulk is a different entity from Bruce Banner, so his knowledge or skills don't carry over to him.
I actually had a theory that because of him actually experiencing life now, in Ragnarok, it influenced his decisions in Infinity War. But the directors have said it's something different, so oh well.
The longer he’s hulk the better of a fighter he’ll become, eventually he’d have Bruce’s brains and his strength instead of being nerfed to dr hulk in endgame

Something that this movie connected for me, personally, was the parallel between Hella's character and Thor's character from the first movie. When we first met Thor, he was a very one dimensional person. He was a god and a general/ warrior in his own right, and all he wanted to do with that power was conquer--pick fights, even. He saw his purpose or identity in fighting--and winning those fights. Knowing what we know now from Ragnarok, you could say that's why Odin did what he did. Instead of imprisoning Thor away like he did Hella (who embraced her most powerful trait as her sole purpose--wreaking death and destruction), Odin banished Thor in the hopes that he could save his son from the same fate as his first born (not that Odin wasn't culpable in his daughter's descent into crazy-town). I mean, that wasn't where the writers were going with it back in the first movie, but I think it makes a nice tie-in story and character development-wise. Another interesting thing is the affect that Thor has on the characters he meets in Ragnarok. Many of them are purposeless or have also fallen into a rut, relying on old habits or previous ways of thinking, etc. And Thor comes along and starts shaking things up, and the characters around him start shaking off their own...self-imposed exiles in a way, and start living again. Hella, however, is a lost cause because she chooses to be nothing other than power. She doesn't take a moment to step back or compromise or reflect--not really--so she cannot grow as a person and is, instead, merely a driving force. There's nothing else there to get to know because she's whittled her own self down to nothing for the sake of merely having an identity of what she views as her strongest form.
It’s not a coincidence that Hulk ended up on Sakaar: it was literally Valkyrie’s job to find champions for the Grandmaster’s arena. Since Hulk knows her it’s implied that she tracked him down as she did Thor. Clearly Hulk was into the idea! Sakaar is a collection point for lost and broken things
@@baron6797 yeah well this a Universe where Ragnarok was predicted by the ‘real’ Norse Gods using magic who also live in space! You can forgive that but Hulk showing up on the same planet is too far??
I love how you can tell which scenes were improvised. The snake story that Thor told. You can see everyone trying hard not to laugh. The Revengers lines, the raging fire vs smoldering fire. Great stuff.

It was suggested to Chris Hemsworth by a make a wish kid who was visiting the set the day they were filming. Chris asked the child what he should say, and that’s how the amazing line was made. Truly an awesome story.
Straight out of the gate, Thor is stronger, however, Hulk's strength is tied to his anger. The angrier he get the stronger he becomes. So no one really knows how strong Hulk can become.
People keep saying Thor getting electrocuted is dumb, but from what I know, your veins don't pop up when you're getting shock. He's actually getting paralyzed.
Why do people make such a big point about Thor being “different” - it’s called character development - he’s not walking around as an English dandy, twirling a moustache, he’s just more comedic. You can see the same character that was in the first two films, but then take into account he’s spent a lot of time on earth with the avengers, & has probably just lightened up. I’m sure Iron Man would rub off on anyone after enough time.
Honestly I like this turn they did on the character. He was rather boring and bare bones at first. They made a better choice making him more comedic. If they didn't make him more comedic then I'm sure people would've been very bored the hell out of. And besides he was slightly comedic in Thor, TTDW, AAOU, and the first Avengers movie. He got more comedic through out the movies. And I'm glad they made him more interesting instead of just making him a serious person all the time.
Don't know if its already been said but Thors line, "We know eachother. He's a friend from work." wasn't originally in the script but as Chris mentioned on Kimmel show, there was a Make A Wish kid on set that day and he suggested that line and it was great so they kept it.
I always thought Valkyrie tracked him down, as it was her job to go get champions for Grandmaster. I always imagined he crashed some where and word got around the galaxy of this unstoppable beast and she went and picked him up.
@@Etticos. I like that idea, it sounds just as plausible, and as far as I know, there is nothing in the MCU that doesn't say that couldn't have been what happened. Comic-wise, I'm not knowledgeable at all though.
I love Thor's genuine concern when he sees The Hulk jump at the "big monster". As if there is an actual possibility that he could succeed in stopping it.
I was floored by that brief awesome scene of Loki fighting on the bridge. So impressive and so cool! Always been disappointed that I couldn’t see Jen’s reaction. I’ve replayed it many times. Why anyone would think Skurge was trying to save himself at the end is beyond me. He deliberately went to his death to protect Asgardians - and it’s clear he was pivotal to their escape. If he’d wanted to save himself, that was about the stupidest possible way to try to pull it off.
It’s not quite just coincidental that Hulk ended up on Sakaar, there are tons of wormholes that lead to Sakaar, so it’s a little higher odds than coincidence. But that being said still very unlikely 😂
Coincidence is when 2 related things strangely happen. You're mentioning 1 thing. Jen's 'coincidence' is about Thor landing up on Sakaar AND hulk being there. Coincidence
@@baron6797 well, yes, if you strip away all underlying meaning and go purely based on vocabulary logic and definitions of words. But when she asks “he just coincidentally ended up there?” There is a clear underlying assumption that she is meaning the coincidence is purely by chance, as opposed to some explanation as to how this coincidence happened.
@@joshbrosh6626 Right, since Iron Man 3... We had 7 full seasons of Agents of SHIELD, and 2 seasons of Agent Carter, plus what was on streaming services...
What I remember from the trailers is that the sequence with Hela shattering the hammer was in what looked like an alleyway. They moved it to Norway in post production, which makes me wonder how the scene with Odin staring off across the ocean (and Thor later having visions of him) would have originally gone down.
I've heard two stories: one that originally Odin had just been thrown out of the care home when it closed cause they couldn't find his family, they found him living as a bum in New York and Loki had to restore his memories, and one where that scene was never going to be in New York and the ally was always a fake out to play into Thor being in New York in the trailers and the Dr. Strange post-credit scene. I personally prefer the latter story there. That scene is almost undoubtedly a huge part of why Loki straightened up, overall, in this movie. He'd felt like Odin saw him as unworthy of being his heir ever since he'd found out he was actually Laufy's son (and even before to an extent), as expressed in the first movie when he was shouting about how Odin couldn't have a frost giant on the throne of Asgard, but the fact that Odin broke out of his enchantments and *chose* to stay on Earth, knowing that Loki was on the throne in is absence, probably told Loki everything he needed to know in terms of how Odin really felt about him as a possible successor.
@@scottmcintyre2809 that sounds horrible lol odin living as a bum in the streets the allfather kinda disrespectful search up the deleted scene you’ll see it
@@Rushking20 There was a storyline in the comics where Odin tried to skip Ragnarok by sending Asgardians to live false lives as humans with their memories and personalities restored only as they encountered Thor. It was the same thing Odin had done to Thor when he made his son live as Donald Blake. When the first group of Asgardians recovered their personalities, they tracked down Odin who was an amnesiac alcoholics homeless man.
I love watching the "My Girlfriend Watches" episodes because you both bring great insights, as a person rewatching the movies (Holden) and as a first time watcher (Jen). Thank you for allowing us to share in your movie viewings.
24:26 nice one, lovely editing touch lmao Aside from that, I love this movie, I think the dialogue and the chemistry among the characters is its strongest point. Everyone goes through a meaningful arc in the movie. Plus the story is awsome and very impactful. Oh and Korg is a cherry on top, chef’s kiss. The only downside is I think Hela, she was just kinda there, I agree with the points you two made. Overall I’d give it an 8.5/10. It would be a 9, but the *ehm* certain other movies would have to be like 11 or 12s. Way to go Taika Waititi!
I think Cate Blanchett's performance as Hela was incredible. Honestly one of my favorite renditions of a character. They just didn't give her anything interesting to do. The typical thin villain. Not entirely a waste, but they really should have recognized what they had there and done something big with it. One of those things where you just bring someone in to do a role, but realize they're absolutely killing it and change up the plan to bring it front and center. They brought her in to do the role, and were like "huh... she's really good. Oh well. Next!"
They teased Beta Ray Bill in here too, with his statue as one of the "Champions". He's kind of a big deal. In comics, he defeated Thor in a 1v1 battle to the death, but refused to kill Thor. Odin was so impressed, he gifted Beta Ray with Mjolnir (because worthy) and gave Thor another weapon instead ...which will go nameless right now. Beta Ray Bill and Adam Worlock still on team "hinted but MIA".
its worth mentioning that sakaar is essentially explained as being the place where lost things eventually end up. theres portals all over the place that just lead to sakaar, thats how hulk eventually found his way there. he went wandering through space on the quinjet and eventually just found himself crashing on sakaar.
I endured the theatrical releases of every single one of these movies like many of us here. Binge watched the entire saga as soon as possible thereafter. Rode it out with most of everyone here for "My Friend Watches the MCU" series. And now having sat out this series, I can finally binge watch "My Girlfriend Watches the MCU" and be all caught up with everyone in time for Jen's Infinity War reaction! Also, Holden it's always a joy seeing you spot something you hadn't noticed before, as many times as you have seen these movies. 😌👌
The first scene with Jeff Goldblum is one of the best parts of the movie, followed up by the opening. My sister and I have been watching the MCU for her first time at around the same rate as y’all and she absolutely loved how funny this one was.
4:24 Ragnarok is the prophesized apocalypse by the vikings. It's supposed to play out as the final battle between the gods and the giants. Sworn enemies would end up killing eachother, such as Thor and Jörmungandr(the midgard serpent), Loki and Heimdall, and Vidar and Fenrir. Surtr, the king of Muspelheim and the fire giants(as seen here) would end the battle by plunging his sword deep into the earth and set fire to the entire universe, for it to go dark and be reborn
Ragnarok was the first Marvel movie I showed my gf because I thought it was the most entertaining in many ways... She had absolutely No interest in "my kind of movies", and when the movie began she was rolling her eyes... Alot! ... but when the movie went on, she really started to like it. And to my surprise, after Ragnarok, she wanted to see all the other Marvel movies, and now they are her absolute favorite franchise of all time.. she absolutely love Marvel... almost more than I do.
i can't understand how the hell Holden is not excited and keeping his cool to spoil anything for Jen, I would be sooo excited that I would have said everything.
In Loki's 'play', the other hemsworth brother is playing thor lol. Also, do you think Thor's mug of beer refilling is a reference to when he goes to Utgard in the myths and is challenged to chug a drinking horn, but the horn is actually connected to the sea, or am i just looking into it too much? Its mythology. Of course Thor has many siblings and half siblings
Thor is funniest when he’s being serious and everyone is reacting to him. Like in the first movie when he asks for another drink or asking for a pet big enough to ride

That's most of why he says, "that's not possible". He knows she's hanging onto the hammer.

That’s a great observation.
This is simply the Savage Hulk persona

Love this, really well put!
Nah, Thor wasn't one dimensional. He was accurate to the comics in terms of his personality/characterization. Until Ragnarok ruined him.
Superman and Captain America
Both these characters suck.

Aside from that, I love this movie, I think the dialogue and the chemistry among the characters is its strongest point.
Fun Fact : The Wolf Fenris and Hel the Goddess of Death were actually Loki's children in Norse
Also in the comic books
I feel like Jen after she gets caught up on the mcu having to wait for these amazing videos!
Oh well. Next!"
I remember around this time where we were with Matt on this movie,it was maybe a ,year but still nostalgic
The scene where Thor awakens his powers on Asgard towards the end always gets me so hyped! “What were you the God of again?” goosebumps man.
The "friend from work" line was suggested by a Make a Wish kid that was visiting the set!
its worth mentioning that sakaar is essentially explained as being the place where lost things eventually end up. theres portals all over the place that just lead to sakaar, thats how hulk eventually found his way there. he went wandering through space on the quinjet and eventually just found himself crashing on sakaar.
