Jamie, I keep coming back to this video over and over. I think about it whenever I pull out my tenor (sub tone is much easier on tenor than alto … or not even possible on soprano or Nino). Then it just hit me, you are wearing a Better Sax shirt… to thank Jay for the backing track in addition for your plugging his Chanel. In addition to the performance in this lesson being my favorite sax solo ever you are a classy act! Keep up the good work!
That was absolutely wonderful, this is by far the best sax version I have ever heard of this tune! Your tone is mesmerizing! Thank you so much for this video 🔥🙏🏽
Jamie your performance of Misty was so hot your Sax was smoking. I guess you do have to "Get Your Sax Together" after that hot performance. I can still hear the sizzle across the ocean. :) Great Job & Awesome Playing... Let the Music Play.
Probably the best ever sax tuition video I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Maybe the best sax video on UA-cam - I need to find how to buy you that coffee. So much good advice that is easily put into practice as well as things that would need more work and the demonstration at the end was breath-taking - I realise how much more I can put into ballads. Love it love it love it!!!
Jamie, I adore the versatility of your playing and it proves, that 'Old School' and modern styles like funk are equally worth to be studied generously. As I am seven decades 'young', I seldom play on stage any more and instead use a lot of playbacks in different styles. Many of them have piano phrases from the beginning to the end and don't leave enough space for the soloist. Less is more, I would say, also to my beloved Video teacher Jay Metcalf! Thank you for your engaged lessons and greetings from Austria!
Wow, Jamie! What a lesson! Jazz ballads are my absolute favorites to play and I listen to a lot of them to develop my ear and technique. Your rendition of Misty is among the best ever! I can’t wait to start practicing with the tips from this lesson. Thank you!
Misty is one of my faves…. I love to play it. But you are a master. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and vast experience with us. Gorgeous sub tone, btw. I could smell the smoke way over on the west coast in America! Gorgeous!
Excellent👏. Perfect timing to help out practice for some cozy Christmassy ballads. Your full rendition of Misty 😎 ….you even squeezed in some wonderful diminished chord lines. Thank you Jamie. 👍
For me Jamie it wasn't so much the lesson... it was the inspiration. Fabulous interpretation and amazing technique. Thank you and ... I must practice more !
Great lesson. Great to hear you playing a ballad again. Last time I heard was in late 90s when you were in the finals of the Young Jazz Musician playing Chelsea Bridge on TV. Had that on VCR and played again and again; real inspiration for me as 16 year old just starting out. Misty was fantastic and after years of playing this tune and then not playing it recently,, I want to get back to it!!
Great, Great, GREAT Lesson!!!!!! Thank you very much. I thing I'll go to play MISTY again, but this time with more attention to your suggestions. Finally great rendition of Misty, one of my favourite jazz ballads.

Your teaching skills are brilliant. I learned a lot from you.i believe you are one of the best teachers on UA-cam. I have some troubles on the mouthpieces.I think high baffle mouthpieces give good response.i wonder what type of mouthpiece to play for the ballads ?i assume you play with a high baffle mouthpiece which needs less effort (air)i dont know :)thAnks again for the great videos.
Hi Jamie. You’re the best! I’m learning so much sax from you. I find your explanations very clear and detailed unlike other tutorial videos on youtube. Regards from Manila!
Thanks for this video. I've been working on Misty for a while and this has given me some great ideas. I play it on Baritone and try to get the subtones on the lower range.
Thanks Jamie! Nice interpretation of this classic! I do think it is helpful to at least be familiar with the lyrics of a ballad, so you get the "feel" of the song. I really needed this over-view of ballads, as tomorrow I have a gig and although I won't be playing Misty, I will be playing a number of ballads. I like your "Johnny Hodges" bends.
100% on 👉 as usual. You are Mr. Multi-genre in performance and instructions which are always excellently presented. I adore your tonality; you're simply ❤️ beyond perfect in performance and instructions. Thanks again, champion 🏆
Very pretty sound. Funnily enough I have been practicing Misty myself over the last week or so. Just as good practice for those low tones. This has given me inspiration to continue while struggling to make it sound this nice
It's nice to hear you play. Sometimes making a video with a lessons content, ie Altissimo, is great. But as in this video you generously show and explain to us the way to improve our performance, You then play and that puts all you have done and said in context and thats when it all comes home. Luv it.
You are wonderful Jamie. I love this lesson. My favorite artist is Gene Ammons. His subtones are mesmerizing to me. And you have done a great job of explaining how to put a ballad together. I never thought about the rhythm element...wow. you're a beautiful player and a fantastic teacher.
Who’s “they”? I assume you mean good jazz improvisors? If so, the answer is fairly involved as you’re really asking me “how do you improvise jazz?” Luckily I created an entire step by step course to address that topic and it’s called a improvisation mastery. www.getyoursaxtogether.com/improvisationmastery I open registration a few times a year.
Fabulous interpretation of Misty and as always a great lesson,( love the scat bit😊). Quick question, when you are playing that soft do you tongue the notes? Cheers Ray
Now that's some soulful and sensual saxophone playing! Great choice of backing track, too! Erroll Garner's tune was one of my favorites when I first started playing out. I applaud your fantasitc tone control throughout, although I'd be less prone to include that growl at 25:56. Were you thinking of Dave Pollack at 26:19 with that weak crying altissimo slow fall? Lots of great advice, as always.
Jamie... As a 2 year beginner , misty is my all time fave, and you took this into so far into the stratosphere.. beautiful. So many years of hard work, and you make it seem effortless and with si much emotion. I see the MP3 backing track is available,, but is there any way of getting sheet music too go with it?
Once again, Jamie the great teacher and player. I was able to produce my first subtones by following the lesson that you put in reference. But the pitch are too flat. For example the low B is actually a Bb! Any tricks to solve this? Many Thanks.
