- Опубліковано 6 сер 2024
- The robot sculpture was commissioned by Downtown Phoenix Inc. and is installed on the southwest corner of 1 Ave. & Monroe in downtown Phoenix.
It took roughly a month and a half to build, about two weeks to powder coat which was done by Specialty Coatings and about four hours to install.

What the book say...
As the sun touched the tips of the snow-capped mountain summits to the west, I continued my journey down the trail towards places my eyes have never seen.
Over 100 miles into the wilderness, thoughts of family and friends drifted in and out of my wondering mind. Knowing they were going their daily routine of work, traffic, meetings and social media check-ins and likes.
As I meandered through the tall bristle cone pines, I came into a clearing at the top of the trail. I could see mountains for miles. Beautiful pristine lakes dotted the landscape.
The view was mesmerizing. I took my phone out of my pocket and took a picture then checked my location with my GPS map.
In an instant, it hit me… I’m still connected!
Have I become so dependent on technology that I couldn’t completely break free?
I put my phone away. Smiled. And just stood there.
I didn’t just look at the incredible view, I could smell it. The aroma of the pine trees, wild flowers and earth. I could hear it, the wind blowing in the trees. The rushing water of the creek off in the distance. The birds going about their day, talking back and forth to each other. And I could feel it, the ice cold water as I quenched my thirst. The ever-changing texture of the trail from rich dark soil to speckled lightning struck granite.
From that point on I chose to disconnect with technology and reconnect with nature.
It was on that journey into the wilderness that the concept for this sculpture was born.
Break free every now and again. Take a walk. Read a book. Or just sit here and watch the world around you.

And the irony of a robot looking down at a book amid the hustle of a downtown were many people are probably looking down at there phones.

This is simply wonderful Doug! I distinctly remember you telling me this story, as we sat visiting in your shop, with the earlier sculpture nearby. I'm so happy this came to fruition and is going to be shared and appreciated by so many. Keep up the great work my friend.

Hey Doug! I'm finally getting caught up on my "Watch Later" list. I absolutely love this piece, and even more, the story behind it. I'd like to see more of the fabrication process. I'm fascinated! See you soon in England!
Thanks Bernie! So much of footage fell on the cutting room floor so to speak as it didn't read well. See you at MC!
That's awesome man! Nicely executed!
Thanks brotha :)
Everything about this is epic. I can't imagine creating something that would have such a permanent visual impact on a city. Great job. The entire sculpture is amazing. Enjoyed hanging out and talking about it back in February at WBC.
Just looked at the map. Thats about 1 mile from where I went to elementary school, well 4th and part of 5th grade. Grace Court School West Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85007

I LOVE this robot and am so glad you put this video together. Excellent work!
Thanks a ton Tim :)
Idea: transcribe what the book reads in the description. I’d be interested in what it says. Tried pausing the video to read it, not successfully.
Thanks that's a great idea. I'll update that within the hour 👍😁
Doug what a fantastic project! The organization that commissioned work, using a local craftsman, should be applauded as well. I concur with the comment below and would like to learn what book passage you used. Thinking it may be something philosophical, or as a twist, an elementary schoolbook.
Lastly, any plans for more detailed build videos of it?
Thanks John, yeah Downtown Phoenix Inc. is doing some great work downtown. I already planted the seed for another big robot sculpture, which would be the 3rd in the series. Fingers crossed
Thanks for the video Doug, really good. Looking forward to meeting you in May at the Maker Central.
Thanks Colin and I'm looking forward to meeting you as well
Congratulations. It has to be an honor to see your work displayed for all to see now? You need to post a photo of it at night. Put it on Instagram. My daughter and I are planning a trip out to AZ again this winter. I will make it a must to go by and see the robot. Did you name him?
Thanks DJ! yes we've been calling him Bernie
Way cool Doug.
What is it lately with the making of human formed robots? I wonder if it is, that we. Internally feel/ project, as some kind of robot. Manufactured on this planet as an homage to what was. To remember somehow what was lost so long ago. Separated from what we feel, only to be expressed in the eyes of a robot. Looking somewhat human, only made of metal! Oops, sorry so deep! Love that guy. What’s its name. Something whimsical?
Sorry didn’t mean to project emotions, are did I?
In any event. I will be stopping bye.
Haha I think you right on track with that thought. We call him Bernie :)
111 Monroe? What's the zip? I may be able to take a day trip to see your work of rogue art. Any other clowns subscribe to your channel?
Hmm...thats funny, I'm not sure of the zip code, but I'll find out. It's downtown on the SW corner of Monroe and 1st Ave. And I'm not sure if they've subscribed or not. Sometimes I get notified but mostly I don't know
What's the text in Bernie's book?
I have it written in the description sectio below the video 😁
