I don't like the change to the Saturn video port. I realize the advantages, but I already have VGA cables and VGA adapters, so it's an extra proprietary set of cables I need to buy. Honestly, it's a deal breaker for me and a reason to choose a different analog IO board.
Thanks for the review. Personally, I'm waiting for their other variant, the IO Direct. Seems like a much better option and you only lose double video output which I don't care for.
The analog out was often useful for monitors where the digital output wouldn’t recognize, as their VGA ports were generally more tolerant of odd signals. This now requires a proprietary adapter for that use case, which is a bit disappointing. Moreover, I’ve had some pretty significant issues over the years with SEGA’s Mini-DIN video jacks, which has me a bit concerned. They have a habit of getting loose over time, to the degree that the metal indent on the connector housing bends itself out of shape after normal use and has to be bent back with pliers to ensure a proper connection. (If I don’t do that, I lose at least one of the three video color channels over time and have to adjust the position of the cable to get it back.)
So, how does the Pro board video quality compare to the original board with VGA port? Honestly the original board with that d-sub to BNC break out cable looks absolutely amazing on a PVM/BVM as it is from years back.
A huge PSA for everybody is that someone has made pulse with modulation cores for Saturn, PlayStation and N64. These cores give you the exact same 24-bit result out of the analogue board, but it works on the V1 analogue board so no new purchase required.

Love getting upgrades like this! Personally as an owner of a digital board using analogue over hdmi to my CRT I wouldn't buy it due to too many dealbreakers : saturn port, single ram, loss of power switch (sync on green should be a setting not a switch). If/when all that is solved (maybe some of it will be solved by Taki's clone) I'll hapilly hand over my hard-earned cash. Also I love the idea of dual video out but that's not available with dual ram.
You might want to look at the upcoming IO board from Porkchop then which will allow for dual ram and digital pass through for direct video analog. Just isn’t done yet
@@VideoGameEsoterica I'm just too greedy and I want it all: Dual Ram (that hardly anything uses but I bought it so going to Single Ram seems like a downgrade), Power switch : I've just got used to using this and it's so much nicer than having an external switch or pressing down on my mister stack, so for me the upgrade would be 24bit / Much cleaner video and dual simultaneous video (but I can't have that because it's an either/or choice). Think I'm just gonna build a second MiSTer build, so I have one for my desk setup and one for my TV setup, the second one I can build with the I/O direct & BliSTer, plus dual V3.2 SDRAM modules, plus a i2s waveblaster header for installing an internal original 90s Yamaha MIDI GS/XG module and a CM6631A DAC for those phat analogue oscillators, I'd love to install a CMSLPT TSR as well, which has dual Philips SAA1099P sound chips for that beautiful rich sounding real-time chip tune audio (PSG), would love to install a OPL3 as well, but not sure if there would be enough I/O left to do so, but if I could, I would have the trifecta of synth hardware (PSG/FM/MIDI), I could also just spend a bit extra (£140) and get the DREAMBLASTER X16GS, which does all synth standards and does them beautifly, it has a Dream/Roland GS Bank (officially licensed, ROM bank), Dream CleanWave Bank (official, Buran Bank, OPL3-FM General MIDI bank, GXSCC Chiptune bank, plus a powerful DSP for multiple efects and what not, it will cover every MiSTer system there is, and systems like the X6800 and Amiga can use multiple audio standards, like Street Fighter 2 on the X6800 has a beautiful chip tune soundtrack mode, nothing beats real chip tune music playing through a real phat analogue oscillator.
@@VideoGameEsoterica If I can find a second hand DE10 it might be worthwhile, I use Roland Sound Canvas 3.2 on my current MiSTer via an Intel M5 X86 compute stick and a CYP DAC, sounds pretty damn good for soft synth, but I heard my neighbour's Dreamblaster X2GS on his MiSTer setup the other night, and it just blew me away to be honest, so much richer and fatter than soft synth.

For me at least, this isn't worth the 65 dollar board, plus getting a new enclosure, plus getting a 35 dollar cable that is 65 dollars from the trusted places I'd normally get it from (how is it only 35 dollars?? I'm suspicious).
The cable from Porkchop? Def don’t be suspicious. I’ve used his stuff the entire 4+ years I’ve been doing MiSTer videos. Zero issues rock solid reliability that entire time
I'm more interested in the USB power supply. There's a problem causing noise on the DE10nano by using just any power supply, is that problem still present for USB power supplies? with the tap to project, external SSD, controller batteries, Wi-Fi and BT the MiSTer power requirements are larger than what the OG PSU can do

I don't own a Mister yet but seriously thinking about getting into it. I have a 20 inch flat screen CRT TV that has component connection. I have it connected to my modded Wii and PS2 for occasional old school gaming. If I were to get a FPGA system, with my Sharp 20 inch flat CRT ( I do not own a PVM), will I benefit any from using the Saturn output rather than VGA output for sure? Or is VGA good enough?
So is this new board better than doing direct video through HdMi? I may still get it anyway as the USBC and power button are interesting but I’m wondering how much better would the video quality be?
Can you bypass the USB’s power and still use the barrel plug splitter if you want? I bought a pretty nice power brick that gives me a longer cable. Thanks!
I don't see how this is gonna work well with scart? With the old board, I have a VGA to Scart adapter and get Audio with RGB straight to my old CRT without and extra audio connection. Scart was a huge thing in Europe.
If you go port to composite or port to component you just tap the signal for the GunCon there. Since you don’t need a breakout board for composite any longer with this IO
I was under the impression the original analog out board was as good as we were going to get lol. I don't wanna have to rip the thing apart again and spend more money.
I'm hoping with this analog board I can output accurate composite video without dot crawl or rainbowing effects caused by adapters. I'm not sure if the current native composite cores using an analog board achieve this. If anyone knows please leave a comment. I currently have a digital only solution and use the the Axunworks converter in my DAC chain to output composite. It has a pot to adjust the dot crawl etc that works great to remove most artifacts (most people don't know it has a pot). Still if a better composite solution can be had from native composite cores I must give it a try.
@@VideoGameEsoterica It works great, and arrived in a month or two which was sooner than I expected. Just be sure to use the pot to adjust dot crawl / rainbowing or you'll think it's garbage. The image is also as sharp as my extron s-video to composite solution which people talk highly of. On the customer service side, be aware that if you email them they take a while to respond and English isn't their first language, but I was able to understand them just fine, and they were polite and answered the questions competently.
Just a design choice. There is one cable that’s universal for all the diff video signals.
Hell of a setup
@@VideoGameEsoterica If I can find a second hand DE10 it might be worthwhile, I use Roland Sound Canvas 3.2 on my current MiSTer via an Intel M5 X86 compute stick and a CYP DAC, sounds pretty damn good for soft synth, but I heard my neighbour's Dreamblaster X2GS on his MiSTer setup the other night, and it just blew me away to be honest, so much richer and fatter than soft synth.
@Wobble2007 your neighbor has a MiSTer too? Nice
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, they are getting pretty popular now, will be even more so when the 99 dollar one hits, maybe not as popular as the Raspberry Pi but MiSTer is just the first of many FPGA platforms I hope.
Let’s hope that equals more viewers haha
I would have loved to see a comparison between the old analog board and the new one :(. I'm so tempted.
It’s such a hard thing to shoot since it’s all shot off CRT unfortunately. Which I find ugly and never really seems to show things as I see them
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah I get the struggle LOL. I did an unscientific comparison between my n64 console s-video out vs the old analog io board with mister's vga port to the same CRT and I honestly can't tell the difference (other than sharpness difference inherent to s-video vs component).
Zero issues rock solid reliability that entire time
Big Trouble is my favorite movie of all time
It’s the second best John Carpenter movie ever made. 1) Escape from NY 2) Big Trouble and 3) The Thing
Escape From NY, The Thing and Big Trouble for me.
Also, in my opinion Snake Plissken is the best and most iconic role by Kurt Russell
He wasn’t too bad as Santa either lol
Sounds interesting.
Would be cool if you test this new board with the clone FP10.
Perhaps in the future
@@VideoGameEsoterica Obviously when you have the device to test it yourself :,D
Haha yes. Which is not now
3:30 how dare you! Jack Burton is a national treasure! haha
I’m not saying he isn’t. I’m just saying Snake Plissken is better lol
I'm more interested in the USB power supply. There's a problem causing noise on the DE10nano by using just any power supply, is that problem still present for USB power supplies? with the tap to project, external SSD, controller batteries, Wi-Fi and BT the MiSTer power requirements are larger than what the OG PSU can do
Noise? Like in the audio signal? Unsure what you mean
im curious if retrocastle will do a new board as well. love his stuff.
Not sure what their plans are. Not a maker who I’ve ever chatted with so I find out what they are doing next the same time you do
@@VideoGameEsoterica think there is a bit of a language barrier but hes posted a few times in the mister discord. he had the saturn port and usb c for a long time on his boards and even threw in usb on the board to make things smaller. i feel like this board brings things close to perfection. now if usb could also be somehow integrated into the board it would be perfect
Both are great for component. You can’t go wrong with either
@@VideoGameEsotericaOk thank you.
👍
So is this new board better than doing direct video through HdMi? I may still get it anyway as the USBC and power button are interesting but I’m wondering how much better would the video quality be?
Direct video is just as good as the DAC you use. So it’s hard to say. Best bet is go analog directly from an analog IO
Can you bypass the USB’s power and still use the barrel plug splitter if you want? I bought a pretty nice power brick that gives me a longer cable. Thanks!
I’ve never tried honestly
is there a Saturn DIN to VGA cable?
would this be an improvement versus using the standard HDMI output to a RetroTink 4K?
That cable I’ve never seen before
I don't see how this is gonna work well with scart? With the old board, I have a VGA to Scart adapter and get Audio with RGB straight to my old CRT without and extra audio connection. Scart was a huge thing in Europe.
You can just get audio from the audio port. Plenty of cables will accept that audio and put it into the SCART connector
@@VideoGameEsoterica So I need an "Saturn Din and Audioport to Scart-Adapter"?
Didn't quite understand how light guns will work. No need for a breakout board or a cable with an extra connector with this new board?
If you go port to composite or port to component you just tap the signal for the GunCon there. Since you don’t need a breakout board for composite any longer with this IO
The inclusion of the usb-c port is tempting me, but, if there is no benefits if you're an hdmi user, is it still worth to switch for the pro model?
No other change no
I was under the impression the original analog out board was as good as we were going to get lol. I don't wanna have to rip the thing apart again and spend more money.
You don’t have to. Og analog board is great. This is just better. There’s no need to upgrade. It’s optional
Could you do a color comparison? How much of a difference is 24 bit color?
It’s not so much color as it is smoothness in gradients. You lose the color banding you see in 18-bit output
Do you know if these pro versions work with Takis clones? De10 clone, ram and usb hub + Mister addons pro analog?
Not 100% sure yet
@@VideoGameEsoterica If you find out please post. Strange Taki when with VGA since all new Analog boards switched to Saturn style
I came for the IO analog pro board review. I stayed for cat pen.
And you stayed longer for Escape from NY
I'm hoping with this analog board I can output accurate composite video without dot crawl or rainbowing effects caused by adapters. I'm not sure if the current native composite cores using an analog board achieve this. If anyone knows please leave a comment.
I currently have a digital only solution and use the the Axunworks converter in my DAC chain to output composite. It has a pot to adjust the dot crawl etc that works great to remove most artifacts (most people don't know it has a pot). Still if a better composite solution can be had from native composite cores I must give it a try.
How is that Axunworks deal? And how long did it take to arrive? I’m thinking about picking up some hardware from them
@@VideoGameEsoterica It works great, and arrived in a month or two which was sooner than I expected.
I’ve wanted to grab a supergun from them. Just haven’t yet
@@VideoGameEsoterica Those look cool! I don't have an arcade light gun solution yet, but I really want one, so if it's good I hope you'll let us know!
I have a few solutions but obv they all require CRT TVs
Did I see Jack Burton screen printed on the PCB? 😂
Hence my Escape from NY shot
Not gonna lie I would buy this for the power button alone haha.
I wouldn’t blame you. I’m not a fan of the inline switch
What's the point of the saturn din output? Deal breaker for me, what a shame.
Just a design choice. There is one cable that’s universal for all the diff video signals. I’ve always felt personally that good quality VGA to X cables put some undue strain on the port due to how heavy those cables are. At least the ones I use and trust the signal quality on. I’ve shown that in some analog videos where the cable wants to tip the MiSTer at like a 45 degree angle
DEGUB. Pretty funny.
hnnnnng!
Lol
Kinda meh for me
this is only for 2 cores.
Direct video works fine. Don't see the point
Like anything the point is if you want it you can do it
All the Magic smoke this new board will make. /s I swear all the Mars idiots are at it AGAIN.
Huh?
