always brings a tear to my eye.....all those who served in vietnam, this was a huge song for them, God rest their souls and thank them for their service....
With all due respect to those who suffered, many not even defending their homeland (how demoralising that must be), this is not a Vietnam song. No need to appropriate it, just let it be.
@@anthonyd4341 - not to be argumentative, this song was released roughly 6 years before the end of the Vietnam War, and since soldiers had radios and did have opportunities to to hear this song, it may very well have been at that.
Dean Ford (the singer) recorded an acoustic version of this just before he died. It is just as beautiful and haunting and even more bittersweet. One of my favorite all time songs.
Big hit in 1969. I was 12 and playing Little League Baseball and Vietnam was everywhere. This song has hit me hard the past few months. I posted it on my fb wall several months ago. My wife of 33 years has cancer, and she's struggling. If I could take it away from her and give it to me, I would in a heartbeat. When I hear this song....I don't know why, but I lose it. "Oh my sorrows, sad tomorrows, take me back, to my own home..." She's my home.
The song of my generation that says it all. We were forced to live it. And subsequent generations that didnt face the military draft wont ever ever ever know how it felt. The Marmalade gifted a generation with this.
This song makes me feel sad & happy & one of my favorite songs of all time. I told my daughter I want it played at my funeral. The one line in it is so profound, 'The world is a bad place, a bad place, a terrible place to live, but I don't wanna die.' I love it, it says so much!
Another Vietnam vet died recently from the Agent Orange he was exposed to for years in Nam. In his 70's with a widow, son, grandson, and beloved daughter for whom I grieve, his body finally succumb to its devastating affects. I pray for every member of his awesome family.
This song makes me think of my Grandpa. He was at the VA home. He had dementia. But not real bad. We go see him, he would grab us crying for us to.bring him home. We couldn't cause my step grandmother had all control over him. But we go see him every weekend. Spend time with him. You see he just gave up. On Jan 15 2016 he passed away ( on my birthday of all days) i listen to this and i think of him and when we were driving to his funeral this song came on. And i knew he was finally home. But not our home, but his Heavenly home.
I can tell you where I was, what I was doing the first time I heard this song, I had an M70 setting next to me in the fracking jungle smoking a cigarette an hour before patrol.
This was really about Vietnam. There is a video showing the veterans in Vietnam and at the end of the video there is an image of a Veteran standing at the wall and on the other side of the wall it shows a veteran standing there in Vietnam. Very powerful, beautiful video.
Dean Ford is the lead singer in this band. It was a song about Vietnam vets, and gets better every time you hear it. You're right about it sounding like The Beatles, the chords are similar to the Beatles' "A Day In The Life". The footage of them singing in this video is actually from a live tv appearance, with the recorded version put on top of it. That live version and a couple other live tv versions of the song are on UA-cam, you should check them out, Dean Ford passed last year, I was fortunate to see him play in a small club in Los Angeles a couple years ago. He did an acoustic version of this that was beautiful, everyone in the room was crying. Great song, great artist, Dean Ford.
This song was and is a MASTERPIECE. It is and always will be since in 1967 to now. Now back in 1967 I was 15. I liked it than. Now, all these tons of years later, I now have basically, my whole life to reflect on. I made a ton of comments on the original version of this song. Other versions also. But Dean's re-recording of this song, in 2017, a year before he died, is telling. His voice didn't crack when he sang, "oh, and I don't want to die", a true artist. I made comments there also. I even commented back and forth to the sound engineer who made that recording. I was very lucky he wrote me. Anyway, the song has everything ✨. I hope you whom read this, take the time to really listen to it, and see if it brings back memories of your life, both good and bad. For your memories made you, yourself. I could write pages about this song, but it would be to long, and no one would realy read it. To all, stay safe. Dave in Sierra Vista AZ. Sweety, I heard this awesome song last year, and I literally cried, something about the song made me cry, thank you for your words, this is an insane song, makes my soul speak out! ❤
This was played as a request of mine on another channel about six months ago. It brings back many memories of that era. The song is so unique and has an undeniable hook. The vocals of the lead singer are superb, as well as the harmony of them all. And the beautiful instrumentation just nails it.
I can’t listen to this song without crying, as a 19 year old Marine in Vietnam we listened to this song over and over again on a 8 track tape I was one of the lucky ones to make it back home! God bless all of our veterans!
The version from before his death a few years ago from Parkinson's is flawless... search 'Dean Ford Joe Tansin" on UA-cam. A Scottish guy, he struggled through life but boy, did he leave us a gem of a song.
Something hauntingly endearing to many of that era , still captivated by it , all things come to a stop when I’m fortunate enough to hear it unexpectedly. Man o man I’m breaking down again, this song doesn’t jog the memory it pushes it onto the stage naked and alone to fend for itself, lovingly brutal to me. What a song!!!
Thank you so much for loving this song, because I to also love it! This reminds me of my very early adult times, like 19 - 21. I can close my eyes and see flashes of all my friends, along with strangers smiling and laughing together.
Always loved this song, and the huge number of other songs from the 60s and 70s that have this, or a similar vibe to them. I never saw this band until sometime in the past year or so when I saw a different video with the entire footage of this performance. Without the UA-cam user editing. This sounds so good, because it's actually the studio version, put over a live film of some concert somewhere. This is a classic rock radio staple from the Golden Era of Music. And one of the 10,000 awesome reasons WHY it was such a golden era.
From the first strum of the guitar I knew I would love this song. Loved the way it started so simply then as the song progressed it got more intense. Love, love, loved it, this will go on my playlist. Loved the melody, lyrics and harmonies.
Beautiful and very poignant. Fantastic lyrics, amazing vocals and lead guitar. And a stellar performance by all the band. I saw them sing this live in 1975
Old song. One of my favorites! They just want to go home from the war. Allen, (lead singer) became Avery famous singer and producer with many superb artists, until his death. I love this!
I finally realized what I like about your reaction videos. Songs from this era were magic to me. They meant so much. I was a different person after I listened to them. One regret is that I cannot hear them for the first time again. By watching you do that, I can get close. Thanks. Have you ever listened to Harry Chapin's "Mr. Tanner" from his Short Stories LP. or "To Love Somebody" by the Bee Gees?
Well articulated and I concur. Harry Chapin's music embodies his belief in mankind. Who'd have thought we'd be reliving this era via youtube....took me forever to understand how it could be important in creating a meaningful last quarter of my life. Gotta run.....the clock is ticking!
Always loved this song but for some reason it's only now that I realise how much like The Hollies it is. You could almost imagine Graham Nash hitting the high notes!
I absolutely love everything about this song. The chord progressions, the harmonies of the vouces, the feel of the song: WOW! is all i can say. I had to orint off the chords and learn to sing it myself. It sounds great with just an accoustic guitar.
I have always loved this song. Even more so now that I have grown up. I was 6 in 1969. I am now 59 years old...be 60 in February. I do reflect on my own life a lot. From my wonderful childhood to my life as a young woman which was anything but wonderful. I will forever respect this artist for this song. Thank you for this reaction. Thank you Marmalade for making a song so good it makes you reflect on your own life! But I sort of wonder. Can this song be a Christian song in a sense?
Thank you Ty. I've asked for this to be reacted to many times and YOU DID IT! My dad and I spent many a night listening to this before he died. Bless you man!

This Song has always been a Favourite of Mine since i was a Teenager ...Am a Senior Citizen now and it still sounds as Good as when I first Heard it ...
Such a beautiful song, and beautifully performed. Shortly before the lead singer's death, he recorded an acoustic version of this song (with just him singing). and I was pleasantly surprised that it was equally beautiful. And his voice was STILL lovely, and this was DECADES later when he was, I believe, in his early 70's.
Modern Renaissance Man's comment that this is a feel good hurt sound was spot on. I was eleven years old when I heard this song on the radio in 1969. It was haunting yet it also enlightened me to reflect more deeply about my life and life around me.
I remember when this song first came out!!! It was like a girl and love ar first sight! I love this song the first time I heard clear up to today! And now every time I hear it, I "REFLECT " back to the first time I ever heard! I wonder what it would feel like now if TODAY was the first time I ever heard it!!!
This song ALWAYS made me feel nostalgic. I didn't know why until I got into my 50s. But it really laid me out watching the version with him singing this same song, but as a very old man, all while this version is fading in and out of the video. His singing seems so much sadder, then he walks off into a garden. I believe he died not long after. Omg, it's such a heart wrenching but beautiful video. Just watch it. Even if it's on your own. You won't be sorry, but you'll have a feeling that is sad and mixed with something else. I can barely watch it yet I love it. It's just him watching himself as a young man, singing the same words at the same time as when he was young. Watching his life go by. Damn now i have to watch it again and feel like I'd do anything to be that young again.
ua-cam.com/video/rGUI9JLO6kk/v-deo.html The link to the video I just mentioned above. Do yourself a favor and watch it. It's beautiful. Trust me. But be ready for some tears.
I know what it is that hits me hard! Just watched again. It's the desperate longing in his eyes to be that young man again, and realizing he can't. He's crying inside! And you can see it in his eyes as he sings it with his younger self that plays as he sings. The version is mellower with cellos and acoustic guitar. Wow! I feel his longing too! I'll never be young again. Ever...
Love this song, 1969, the year my firstborn was born. March 69. It was hard finding you again. And I see this was 20 minutes ago LOL. After I clicked on the first link. went back but could not find chat again where the links were. Yes you are right about certain Beatle sound The one that comes to mind is IN MY Life.
Song came out during the heat of the Vietnam War, giving the sense of how the young men on both sides of the guns felt fighting a war by Politicians. Overwhelming majority of soldiers drafted by the US military were poor minorities. Just my opinion
The draft was done by lotto.. didnt matter your socio economic background, although there were things like college deferments etc.. And I'm sure the very rich had their influence..
what a great classic flashback..always wished The Marmalade released more hits..this one always takes me back to my youth, great vocals great backing and words still relevant today. Ty for the reaction..Keep Strong Keep Well My Friend
Funny you thought it sounds like the Beatles. I spent a couple of years trying to find what Beatles album this song was on. This was pre- internet days when you had to go to the record store. Been a favorite of mine since my childhood. Thanks for reacting to it.
I've watched documentary's of US service men saying that this song had meaning, and the line that meant the most was " take me back to my old home" given what they were going through who could blame them.
I have to agree with you, the lyrics are pretty darn deep, but then a lot of the songs released during that era were songs with "making you think" type of lyrics (and then, some aren't). Thanks for reviewing this one, I really like it.
As a child of the 60's I was never into Marmalade but after it popped into my play list it's now one of my go to songs. Love everything about this performance. Plus hearing Dean Ford do Roy Orbison IN DREAMS. Such an underrated singer RIP DEAN. 👑👑👑👑
I enjoyed this one, may have heard a few years ago but had forgotten. You know, MRM, there's a song you gotta hear . . . "Toast and Marmalade For Tea" by Tin Tin from 1970. One of the best songs ever.
I remember that Tin Tin song! Glad to hear you mention it. It is so rare for me to hear anyone mention them. I just listened to "Toast & Marmalade for Tea", after seeing your comment. Good memories.
Is cathartic the word you're looking for? The song never got the recognition it deserved. I'd love to hear the back story on this song. I assumed it was a reaction to the political and social injustices of the day. I don't know about others, but 50 years later I'm still working on it.
Why do you think that? it was written by Junior Campbell and (lead singer) Dean Ford, both of whom were from Scotland, who had nothing to do with Vietnam.
its a beautiful song...I remember when it was released.. I was maybe 11 or 12...same time frame as the Beatles, a lot of 60s early 70s had their influence....you should do "Without You" by Harry Nilsson it has a similar feel and is classic!
"The World is a bad place, a bad place, a terrible place to live. But I dont wanna die." One of the best lines ever !
I found it dichotomy like
Truth
I said the same thing. It really is so profound!
Take me back to my old home!
Another: "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints". (or, anything by Eminem)
RIP Dean Ford lead singer!
When did he die? Last I heard he was still alive this year?
Kimberley Gager december2018
Awww! No! When did he pass? God bless that man.
always brings a tear to my eye.....all those who served in vietnam, this was a huge song for them, God rest their souls and thank them for their service....
Yes...i agree
Yes, let's remember the quarter million South Vietnamese soldiers who fought and died for their freedom, as well as the American service men.

And I'm sure the very rich had their influence..
just poor.... period.
what a great classic flashback..always wished The Marmalade released more hits..this one always takes me back to my youth, great vocals great backing and words still relevant today.
Yeah , you had to hope you could find it listed in the Schwaan Catalog .
@6:10 I think was describing, is what alot of people call "closer" .
I love this era!
The reactor started listening, smiling, by fourth bar that grin had disappeared.
Essa linda canção mexe comigo.
As an old man this song evokes so much ennui in me I wish I was resting in peace I lived to long😢
Brings back so many memories. It reminds me of summer of 1970. "Take me back....." 🎵🎵🎵
Always gives me all the Feels. Thank you.
This song make me cry.
Is cathartic the word you're looking for?
The song never got the recognition it deserved.
I'd love to hear the back story on this song.
I assumed it was a reaction to the political and social injustices of the day. I don't know about others, but 50 years later I'm still working on it.
one of the first songs i learned on guitar many years ago.
Just came across this , as recently rediscovered this great song. I know you mostly from your political videos, great 👍 job!
This song became an anthem for Vietnam Veterans ("take me back to my own home")
Written and sung from a Vietnam soldier's thoughts.
Why do you think that? it was written by Junior Campbell and (lead singer) Dean Ford, both of whom were from Scotland, who had nothing to do with Vietnam.
@@mikeyaureliush9017 It was a hugely popular song for the GI's in Vietnam.
@@bobwallace9814 Maybe it was, but it's not true it was "written and sung from" a Vietnam soldier's thoughts.
Umm, not really. Unless the Scots fought in Vietnamese war.
No. They are begging to go home.
Beautiful song. I understand it was kind of the anthem of our guys in Vietnam. Very suitable and sad.
GOOD OLD SONG...I REMEMBER AS A KID!
its a beautiful song...I remember when it was released.. I was maybe 11 or 12...same time frame as the Beatles, a lot of 60s early 70s had their influence....you should do "Without You" by Harry Nilsson it has a similar feel and is classic!
