ELPHNT is definitely one of the Ableton GOATs. I've probably learned more from him than anyone else on YT. I recommend checking out his workflow livestream if you find yourself struggling to get organized in Ableton.
Yeah Dude - this is seriously one of the best tutorials for Ableton I've seen... and I'm a very seasoned user. Bonus points for the South African accent too!!
MAN YOU GIVEN OUT REAL BARS RIGHT HERE, THIS IS THE DOPEST TUTORIAL ON ABLETON IVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY BRAIN EXPLODED TWICE HALFWAY THRU!!!!!! VERY HELPFUL TO ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY. THIS WAS FUN TO WATCH
@@dBsInstitute I'm a guitarist, currently on a (sometimes frighteningly!) steep learning curve with Push 2 and Live 11. I built my first computer in 1979, and started using MIDI and Pro 24 (the predecessor to Steinberg's Cubase) around 1986, but fell out of love with using computers for music after losing so many takes, so much time and effort, even whole projects, due to computer crashes and hardware failure - and have only recently dared to return. Wow - how everything has changed!
EDIT: Amazing tutorial - thank you! Btw when adding Tuner at around 31:55 at the video after my Simpler track with field recording inside of it - Tuner does not register sound and does not show any nones that are being played (even if I try lowering or rising the octaves)? Answer: I read that it could be due to a lot of sonic information coming from a field recording used that was inserted into Simpler, but I am looking for a more elaborate answer if anyone knows.. Also can someone point me to some tutorial on how to make "Change sample" macro function that is being used in the video? :)
Another good generative process for drum beats that I got from Doc Mckinney (Esthero, The Weeknd): if you have the Fishman Tripleplay, you can use your guitar as a midi controller. I am 1000x better at guitar than piano, synth, or Push2 and it allows me to create natural grooves from drum kits that are also hella creative. Try it out!
Yes - the main difference between Standard and Suite is the some of the instruments and Max For Live. You can see all the details here: www.ableton.com/en/live/compare-editions/
Hey I have a midi controllers with endless knob. I am trying to use those knobs for my fx but the knobs are either crazy fast, slow or jumpy. How do I control the speed of the knobs and keep them from going haywire?
Is there a way to get your velocity to modulate the decay time? For instance a higher velocity will have a slightly higher decay time and a low velocity will tighten the hi hats up? I'd rather do that than drawing in automation. I tried Vel>Time in sampler but couldnt get satisfactory results.
Actually I figured it out, using the Max4Live device Expression Control. And wouldn't you know it, our man ELPHNT here has a whole article on his site about this device as well as numerous racks involving it to download. What a guy. As soon as I get gigs back I'm buying something from his store.
Those are macros, it would be easiest to look up a separate video but essentially you just right click on certain parameters and map them to macros so you can just play with those knobs easily.
@@nickgrabill6889 right, I'm familiar with effect racks and macros but I guess my question was how he was able to build an effect rack for an individual sound as opposed to the entire drum rack?
@@Simon-ri8rr Oh, I hope I understand you correctly, but you just add the FX after the actual sample (or even just drop the FX plugin directly on that specific hit in your drum rack) instead of placing the FX after the bussed rack. So when you click on individual hits to show/hide the waveform, just drop the fx on that specific pad of the rack and you should have an effect rack specific to only that one-shot. Sorry if I missed again! lol
This was something that strayed me away from drum racks and towards impulse initially until I figured out how to Bus the FX rack separately for each sample in the Drum rack.
Just in case anyone runs into the same problem. I have a midi track template already saved that would load up with audio effects, thats why I was not able to see the "midi to" Output. Once you erase those audio effects you can route midi to midi again
You spend an awful lot f time trying to make something digital sound more human. While there’s nothing wrong with this I don’t understand why you would want to. So many tutorials take this approach as if something sounding “Electronic” is bad. Digital and electronic is also ok. I love randomizing and leaving some things to chance but I also love electronic perfection play a big part of it. I would never call Kraftwerk boring yet their rhythms, loops and patterns are electronic and robotic. It can almost be hypnotic.
Hey! It's me 🙌🏻🐘🎉
Finally took the time to try this out. Omg, It's brilliant. Btw, love being in your mailinglist. Pretty litt :) Keep it up
@@samuelnaesen1176 Awesome! Thanks 😃
Really awesome. Thank you!
Are you wearing authentic elephant wool in the video!?
very inspiring thank you for all those ideas around randomness.

Algorithm must have bumped this one for some reason. Always great to refresh the mind with this particular video!
The 'Up/Down' to jump the loop bracket by it's own length = mind blown! Thanks ELPHNT!
I find it a lot easer to use the mouse to drag the black line to the preferred position. No need to use keyboard at all.
This video is a gem for Ableton users. How this video doesn't have millions of views is beyond me..

THIS IS A MASTER CLASS! Thank you to dBs Institute and ELPHNT for this. You gave me much inspiration, and ableton less daunting to use.
So glad you enjoyed it!

Snares gone wild
POLYMETERS not POLYRYTHM, it's a big difference and it gets very confusing when so many teach it wrong.
the one who pressed dislike guess you even saw the video complete \0/
Thank you for this video 🙏but I have a question. Can I do everything you explained in this class with Ableton standard?
Yes - the main difference between Standard and Suite is the some of the instruments and Max For Live.

why cant i find this closed/open hihat icon thing in my ableton?
Hey I have a midi controllers with endless knob. I am trying to use those knobs for my fx but the knobs are either crazy fast, slow or jumpy. How do I control the speed of the knobs and keep them from going haywire?
Are these racks with all of those samples come with ableton??

does anybody know how he got those nice clean racks for the sample parameters next to each individual drum rack sound? (sample selection, decay, etc.)
Those are macros, it would be easiest to look up a separate video but essentially you just right click on certain parameters and map them to macros so you can just play with those knobs easily.

I believe that is his DRUMR tool - free to download on his site, tutorials on YT
Is this kind of routing still doable? I cannot find the instrument track in my "midi to" options
I can only view audio tracks in the"midi to" section
Just in case anyone runs into the same problem. I have a midi track template already saved that would load up with audio effects, thats why I was not able to see the "midi to" Output. Once you erase those audio effects you can route midi to midi again

Lovely South African accent ..... LOL -
It's a polymeter not a polyrhythm . is this guy fucking serious?
02:00 or use proper daw like Bitwig instead of crapelton.
thx for this elphnt make more and i vil see them all aboner know and thx hope the best for you
I really enjoyed this and found it really helpful. thank you ELPHNT, i have a couple of your plugs too. :-)
Thanks for this tutorial mate! You explained a good number of features and functions that I never really knew much about... great stuff!
Thank you, really amazing lesson on a new way to use ableton for me!
Tom is a genius.
100%
The field recording into a synth sound trick = 🤯🔊
He's a wizard
