Custom chips are what makes a console a console. They can customize what they need and tweak for better performance, keeps cost down too. They can design a whole chip to run well with their os. Its what made the first steam deck so good. Was a low power cheap chip that was still competitive and affordable.
This could also mean that the Z2 is not powerful enough to be called as a generational upgrade. To be honest it is pointless to upgrade from one device to another just to get a boost of 6-7 fps.
I mean if the z1 is what other conapbues used like the ally x then it is a generational upgrade compared to the steamdeck. If the z2 is better it is still much better. Helldivers ran at 60fps at 720p. That's alr peak. And 900p or higher with frame gen and ai boost. Which some hate it but imo is fine to use on a handheld.
yup and that's the thing, the steam deck doesn't have to be overbuilt, the os just has to be efficient and efficient they have made it. Nothing about the steamdeck changed physically since its release (aside from oled screen version ofc) and through updates alone its now around 3x faster today.
There has been two (three) major changes to the Steam Deck hardware; the V1 LCD Decks (up to mid-late 2023) used a 7nm SOC whilst the newer V2 LCD and the OLED Decks use a 6nm SOC which is more power-efficient and doesn't drain the battery, the OLED screen for the 512GB and 1TB Deck options, and the 50Wh battery in the OLED Deck (the LCD decks have a 40Wh battery). The main way to tell if a LCD Steam Deck is a V1 (7nm) or V2 (6nm) is open the back panel and check the heatsink over the SOC and M.2 portion of the motherboard - if there are 3 screws (one hidden under some aluminium tape) it's a V1 Deck, if there's 2 screws then it's a V2 Deck (this is shared with OLED Decks).
The greatest thing about the Steam Deck has been setting a low end target that AAAA games can live with. We don't want them to move that target yet. Delivering a console like experience for PC gamers means making sure the original Steam Deck system doesn't get left in the dust after just a few years.
Gaben is man of his word,he say he will never update steamdecj yearly like other,he will wait until steam deck is really can't handle anything then he will upgrade the steam deck, this why valve is the best
Theres more than just the software that makes the deck great, in my opinion. It's my favourite controller I've ever used. The dual trackpads are great, and I've found a bunch of uses for them in games and ordinary computer stuff, and the dual touchpad typing is great (though can be difficult cause the keyboard can lag in games). And the touch sensitive joysticks are great, its very comfortable to use, and it didn't get stick drift after a few months like the Xbox controllers I've had. The rest of it is pretty great too, nice screen (at least on the OLED), good battery life, well priced, though I'm not certain how other devices compare on those aspects. And while other devices definitely are more powerful, I don't feel I need more power, I'm pretty happy with how it runs all the games I've tried. SteamOS is great too, ofc. But I'd still pick a Deck over any other handheld, even with SteamOS.
Valve is the only one I trust to actually have support for their hardware as well. All the other windows “handhelds” I feel like are gonna turn into e-waste rather quickly.
I have to agree. The software (SteamOS) is what makes the Steamdeck awesome. I like the simply utility; it just works. It's Linux, so if you want to tweak things it's infinitely configurable, but you don't have to touch anything if you don't want to.
valve didn't rush for new deck release, they already had their hands full with make SteamOS run on other device also didn't valve say current hardware doesn't "advance" enough to even justify consider make a planned for deck2.
Hmm with the improved efficiency and Battlemage... could Valve switch to Intel or maybe an ARM SoC? I doubt there won't be any response to the Switch 2.
ARM doesn't make sense for now, since you'd have to emulate x64 and that leads to some efficiency losses. If ARM programs become more standard, then it will make more sense.
Valve said they will be releasing their OS for other handhelds soon, so more likely they wont make an official steam deck 2 and will instead develop the OS for other hardware makers.
Installing other launchers is just as simple as installing them on windows. If you want to look at it a different way, it is equally as difficult to install launcher's on windows as it is on steamos.
