    I learned some years ago how to flyfish from a very experienced fishing guide. The most important thing he stressed was to practice casting without a lure on the line until I was very comfortable using the fly rod which took a couple weeks practice every day. I was very glad for his great advice because one time my leader struck me in the eye while practicing. Just be very careful learning to cast the flyrod.

    My mother used to fly fish in the rivers of Western Oregon and she loved it. She caught trout and Catfish. My grandfather would fly fish a few yards away and it was a competition to catching the biggest fish. It is a lot of fun and an art to fish smoothly. I was little at that time, so when she took me I would just watch. For your first time you did good, to bad the rod broke.

    You did well for a 1st time-both of you! One trick is when you get the fly where you want it-slowly pull the line back towards you, so it floats like it's moving. Then, that attracts the fish! Happy birthday Houston!

    Happy birthday Houston, you practice with that rod and in no time you’ll have it down great . No dad has to go get a fly rod . You’ll have to learn the types of lines to use and how you tie the knots and which flys you use with the bug hatch . You’ll be ok , don’t worry about rod breaking , that happens a lot .

  • @edblough4134
    @edblough4134 Рік тому +4

    I think when Houston dropped the rod the tip shattered but stayed together until you put the slightest pressure on it. Fly rods out of fiberglass, graphite and/or carbon fiber do that. Bamboo seems less likely to break.

    You will love it. My father taught me. Take fly cut barb off, and place a 5 gal bucket at a fair distance then cast Toward the pale. This will help you learn to put your fly exactly where you want it in the water. 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock.

  • @FREEDOMREDBIRD
    @FREEDOMREDBIRD Рік тому +5

    Fantastic gift from Ed! I love fly fishing, it’s so much fun! General rule is cast 10-2, slow down and don’t slap the water. Did you put tippet line onto the fly line? And you pull the line in a little at a time. If you could come to Tenkiller lake I could show Houston how to use it. If your using dry flies you need the dry fly dressing to make it float. Happy Birthday Houston, you got a gift that you will learn to love! That second fly is a wet fly for underwater fishing, should be fishing facing upstream. Oh no Daniel broke it 😂

    Houston and Daniel, this movie is awesome:
    A River Runs Through It
    Known by most as the best fly fishing movie, this Robert Redford film starring Brad Pitt and Craig Sheffer tells the story of two brothers, Paul, and Norman Maclean. One is more reserved while the other is more rebellious, but they share their love of fly fishing.

      Hi Alicia, my name as well but dad off the boat from Italy....wanted to spell it the Italian way.
      Had to respond, cuz was so ironic you commented on the movie, dad was a big time ( die hard )fly fisherman, he loved that movie ....bought the video, had me and my brother along with mom watch it few times. He would fish all the rivers of Ohio, Pennsylvania. One of his clients owned a bnb along the river where it was filmed so of course he had to go and fish it. Dad was involved with Trout Unlimited, Healing Waters and few others, he became so good at it, started to teach it and guided on rivers . He sure loved Fly Fishing, worked hard but he fished even harder....God bless you Alicia, be safe stay well.

    Happy B-Day Houston! One thing I learned when I started fly fishing...When you pull the fly back from the water give the line time to lay out flat in the air behind you. You can feel it pull back slightly. That is when you flip it forward toward the point you want you fly to land. Don't whip snap the line out, it will pop your fly off the line of pop all the fluff off your fly! Try to be kind to your fly! I watched a video of the guys who use Fly Rods to catch Tarpon in Florida! So much fun!

    Good job Houston first time out! I’m from Ga and we do alot of fly fishing in the mountains for trout... One thing to remember about fly fishing.. it’s not about the wrist action.. it’s forearm action. Not snapping with the wrist, but linger slower overhead or sidearm sweeping motion. It’s called fly fishing because the flies mimic a fly overhead of the fish. The see the fly going over them and hit it. So a couple, three, four fly overs with the jig then land it on the water. Y’all really did great for your first time out! Happy Birthday Houston!
