  • I flew from Hong Kong to Shanghai in early September, and had to complete a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a hotel. Before my trip, I watched a lot of quarantine vlogs on UA-cam made by other people who went through the same thing when travelling to China, and found them really useful because it helped me better mentally prepare myself for my quarantine. I thought it would be nice to return the favor, and hope some of you find this helpful! Watch to see how I spent my time in quarantine :)

    I'll be travelling to Shanghai for work in 3 weeks from now and will do the 14 day quarantine. Your room is very nice, but on the small side. I'll be bringing lots of books, maybe plastic models to build, exercise bands, and lots of music. Thanks for the informative and great video!

      It’s now been 3 weeks since I’ve commented and I’m now at the airport ready to fly to Shanghai and I’m so excited, as I’ll be in China for 6-10 weeks and look forward to exploring Shanghai after the quarantine. Your meals at your hotel look great!

      I don't think you get to choose, you are just randomly assigned to one upon arrival

    Hey great video! I’m coming the China in a little over a month for work and wondering how quarantine will work for me coming from LA. When I purchase my flight to Shenzhen (where I will be living) the flight will have connections through mainland China...do they make you quarantine at the first or last entry point or will I be advised my quarantine destination before hand by someone ? I’m kinda confused if I’m supposed to purchase a separate flight to Shenzhen after 15 days from wherever I’m sent (if it’s random) and what happens to my original flight ? Lol do I just buy a flight to a major hub and stop at that till after I’m almost done with quarantine to buy a connecting flight to Shenzhen??
    Soooo sorry for all the questions I’m just so confused and the process seems pretty daunting 😓 help please stranger! Lol

    • @ldm2622
      @ldm2622 3 роки тому +1

      From what I know, you're gonna be quarantining for 2 weeks at the first entry point into China. The destination (first entry point) shouldn't be random since you bought the ticket. The hotel assignment at the first entry point will be random though. Upon arrival and after going through customs, I think you'll board shuttle buses that will take you to designated hotels to quarantine. Some of the hotels are nice and some are pretty bad, seems to be luck of the draw. But if the conditions are not up to your standards, you can probably insist that they take you somewhere else. If you already bought a connecting flight to Shenzhen without taking into account the 14 day quarantine period, you can probably just change the flight.
      Are you going on a Z visa or M visa? If so, how long did the entire process take?

    • @michellejtao
      @michellejtao  3 роки тому +1

      Yep, exactly what the previous comment said! You are quarantining for 2 weeks at the first entry point into China. The random assignment only happens with hotels when you arrive at a destination in China (eg: Shanghai).
      I personally flew from HK to Shanghai first (with a Chinese friend who was also going to Shanghai), and then separately bought a ticket for Shanghai to Beijing and flew to Beijing after I completed my quarantine (where I'm currently living now).
      I'm not sure what will happen if you bought a connecting flight to Shenzhen, but imo it might be safer to just buy a direct flight to one of the major hubs, and then separately buy a ticket from where you're quarantining to Shenzhen. After you finish your quarantine in your first entry point (city X), you will receive a paper saying that you've completed your quarantine in city X, and your 健康码 (a covid QR code tracker thing on your phone) will turn from red to green, which means you are safe to travel.

      @@ldm2622 see my question is really whether all the cities are subject to quarantine at first entry or just the major hubs I’m connecting through. There aren’t any direct flight to mainland China from LA and most of the flights I’ve seen pass through smaller cities first like Xiamen before getting to Shanghai. So I’m wondering if I should just book a flight to Xiamen and then another to from there to Shenzhen after quarantine.
      As for the Z visa it’s actually still in the works....the visa process itself isn’t what is very long it’s getting all my documents authenticated that’s taking forever. I’m still waiting for those and after I receive them and send them to my employer it will take another 2-4weeks for them to give me my PU letter and work notice letter. Once I have those and gather all my documents I can go to the visa office and that process (if accepted) only takes 2-4days. And I can fly out ✌🏽

    • @nicolesemelsberger9206
      @nicolesemelsberger9206 3 роки тому

      @@michellejtao how come you didn’t have to quarantine in Hongkong first since it’s technically the first entry point? Or were you just coming from Hongkong to begin with?
      Flights are direct and much cheaper for me to fly into Hongkong but the quarantine is 21days now I just can’t afford to waste so much time with my work deadline.

    • @ldm2622
      @ldm2622 3 роки тому

      @@nicolesemelsberger9206 Yea I think you’re subject to quarantine upon arrival at the first entry point, regardless of which city you arrival at. I know people that were on LAX to Xiamen flights, and they quarantined there and made travel arrangements to get to their eventual destinations. If you can’t directly fly into Shenzhen, going to Xiamen is a good option. It’s not too far from Shenzhen.
      Thanks for the info on the visa process. I have a job opportunity with a company in China on the table, so that was helpful. I originally thought you get the PU letter first, but sounds like it’s more 1. Get non-criminal record check, diploma, etc authenticated 2. Get documents to employer for a PU letter 3. Apply for visa and hope it gets approved.

    • @michellejtao
      @michellejtao  3 роки тому

      My district was 长宁, but that's because I had a home address in Shanghai that's in that district. So my hotel was randomly selected from the available quarantine hotels in the 长宁 district. Hope this helps

      My hotel's wifi was pretty fast, but I think it really depends on the hotel you are assigned to 😬 you can consider buying a pocket wifi (I got one off Taobao), just to be on the safe side in case your hotel wifi is slow or if it suddenly stops working during the day

    I have a job offer in Shanghai & I should go later this year but I'm really worried about the 2 weeks quarantine. So once u reach China, u have no choice at all about what star hotel u can choose from? Because I saw in some videos, some ppl stayed in really terrible hotels & it felt like prison lol. Your room was not bad but can't I pick a 4 or 5 star hotel? Also, what about food? Is there a menu or they pick food randomly for u?

    • @michellejtao
      @michellejtao  2 роки тому

      From my knowledge and experience, no, I don't think you can choose what hotel to stay in. As for food, I didn't get to pick at all (I just ate whatever they left outside my door). It probably depends on the hotel. Wish I could be more helpful -- sorry!
