I loved this series and will be heart broken if it doesn’t get a second season. Great writing, acting and directing…such complex characters. I hope Sato isn’t dead…he deserves more screen time. I thought Samantha was smarter than trusting Akira & handing all her money over like that. Thanks for covering the show and hope you get thousands of likes.
Agreed Samantha really took the bait from a slimy guy that she well knows uses women for their money. Her character was way too street smart to fall for that obvious routine.
I agree, this episode revealed Samantha isn’t as smart as she thinks she is. She has dug a deep gold she doesn’t understand quite how deep it is. I hope Sato pullls thru and I hope this show gets many more seasons. Love this show
The book this is based on is absolutely fascinating. If this series does it justice, this is going to be amazing to watch. Kudos to HBO Max for picking this book up, give your executive a raise, he/she have good taste. Plus, Ken Watanabe is a GOD, fantastic casting.
I cannot believe it ended like this! Cannot wait for a second season. I love the cast and the plot and as somebody who lived in Japan for several years i really appreciate all the attention to detail. Tokyo is truly a mystery and very complex and it’s beautifully shown here.
@think Story tozawa is based off a yakuza boss who was a fbi/cia informant and got flown to the US for a transplant. An event which Jake wrote about. Also I am fairly certain the grey haired person in the video is the politician from Tozawa's birthday

To be honest, the first 3 episodes were very slow but episode 4 onwards it gets really good. There were so many questions in the final episode, we really need a second season.
I really like this show. Watched the whole thing in 4 days, and for me, Sato was the best character. Very deep character, with a lot of conflicting emotions it seems. Also, a great storyline with Jake and Natagiri, and I can’t wait to see what happens with their investigation.
This show isn't a thriller in the traditional sense that you don't know what's going on. It's usually always pretty clear who the players involved are. The suspense is derived from the characters battling how helpless they are against the circumstances.
I just stumbled on this series one week ago. Since then I have been glued to my television every chance I get. This series is extremely compelling with great production values, excellent writing, and fantastic acting all around. Gonna be terribly bummed if this is not renewed. I al also really deeply hurt that one of my favorite characters in the entire series may have met an untimely end. I really hope that does not happen because I felt tremendous sympathy for them.
i loved that the first 5 mins wasnt at all ever touched it gave a tad bit of the future making you wanting more but i think that scene is the end of s2 imo or start of s3
Great review, thank you! I can't say enough good things about this series: fantastic plot premise, character development, intrigue, that dark aspect of Tokyo and the Yakuza that I love. It's truly a great show and i really hope it gets renewed. I'm really critical about shows, movies and series and this one just really pulls me in. I want more. Like you, Sato has been my favorite character development in this first season. Although every character is really thought out and believable and the fact that it is based off Jake's novel makes this such a clever take on their development through the series. I've become invested in all of them. I can honestly say there really isn't anything bad i can say about this series which surprises myself as I struggle to stay committed to any series or movie these days. There is a great interview with Jake on youtube anyone can watch that dives into his novel and aspects of the Yakuza if interested. Great video! I think we will definitely get a season 2. I have several theories of my own for season 2. I think like Sato, Miyamoto isn’t dead. Like you said Tozowa basically says, “Miyamoto is somewhere where his conscience will no longer bother him or be a hinderance to me.” Tozowa technically never used the word “dead”. I think Miyamoto is either being kept somewhere or Tozowas thugs beat Miyamoto and left him for dead. I also think either the Yakuza writer or Miyamoto left that tape of Polina on Yoshino. Who else would know what’s going on? I also think Misaki, Tozowas mistress is going to use the time Tozowa is gone to go to Jake and get his help. Samantha will make more stupid choices hahaha.
I gotta admit all the japanese characters really stole the show. Great performances, dialogue and plots. Towards the end i find the jake bit boring and just wanna go back to the gangsters in their turf war plot. Im completely ok with the next season deleting him and samantha and just follow the cop vs yakuza ahahahaha
Jake and Samantha are so annoying, Ken and Sato are the best 👌. The show did a pretty good job of highlighting some experiences of "gaijin" in Japan (from what ive heard from others), really shows their entitlement and how the western mindset conflicts with that of the culture there, very subtle but there enough to tell
Tozawa probably stole that other defective's liver. he is probably heading out of the country to do the transplant. that's why he says he will be around a long time and smiles as the plane is taking off.
I think that the storyline of Samantha has become more and more senseless by the end of the season. Look, the only thing she wanted badly and for which she's been working so hard is independence and a business of her own. And after losing her money in such a stupid way she just came to yakuza asking for help knowing exactly of the outcome of this decision? She's jumping from the frying pan into the fire, which makes no sense. Samantha seemed so smart and ambitious girl at the beginning of the season and ended up as stupid as her friend Paulina is. Scriptwriters just got it all messed up, that's a shame. Nevertheless, I really love the series and hope season 2 to come soon.

Of course it deserves season 2. I love anything Japan related (feudal Japan, WW2 Japan, post-War Japan and modern Japan…) and after watching this show i wanna see HBO do a TV Show based on Yakuza alone.

I am theorising that it's a foreign doctor who has maybe a "cure" for his ailment or something along those lines....hence his hasty unplanned flight out of Tokyo, what do you guys think?
I love this show. I actually lived in Saitama during the time that Jake was there. For me, I get very NATSUKASHII and another foreigner had issues with the police. The portrayal of the police seems to be spot on. My 3 quibbles: 1. There should have been more consequences to Sato's 2nd murder. 2. The first 5 mins scene should have continued within the 1st season. It was foreshadowing that just left me hanging. Insulting to the audience, IMHO; 3. Why didn't Sam take any action after getting robbed? She knows Polina's boy toy. She knows his salon, etc. If he stole 5M Yen, why did she just let him off after so much work? That makes her character seem really weak, contrary to the rest of the season.
Great series, Michael Mann does it again. He needs to continue his legacy before he retires. Miami Vice needs to expand how Star Wars did. A new vice series in another American city needs to come out.
Some Japanese pronunciation corrections. @0:37 "Meicho Shinbun" is pronounced shìńbúń (boo n) not bun, @5:15 not Jen but Gen. Obviously Tozawa (based on Goto Tadamasa) is going to UCLA to get that liver transplant with the deal he made with the FBI to be an informant. Didn't you read the book?
If you ever play Yakuza series games, you can basically know who's who and what their conflict is, its basically The west (Tozawa) wants conquer The east (Chihara-kai) bussiness just like Omi Alliance on Tojo Clan. Also the subtitle when Jake talks with yakuza in the first scene kinda spoiled the villain in this series because the sub said Tozawa while the yakuza said Gumi-cho (roughly translate the leader/the boss). Should've said the boss so the audience guess which yakuza family is the villain
Can somebody explain me why NOBODY says a single thing about the fact that there were A TOTAL OF 10 EPISODES announced And as of today all mentions of ep 9 and 10 disappeared What the hell is this?
I've been wondering this too! Especially given how rushed and messy episode 8 was, I really got the feeling there were supposed to be more episodes before they were scrapped / abandoned for some reason
Great show, the only plot point I found hard to stomach was Polina, who as a mizu shōbai hostess herself, falling for a male mizu shōbai as a mizu shōbai and blowing all her hard earned money and going into debt to play the fake/kabuki relationship game of mizu shōbai. It didn't ring true. Getting into a shabu debt with a Tozawa affiliate dealer would have been a much easier & realistic storyline, than that hostess falling for a host playing the exact same game as she does for a living. I also felt the romantic jump sam makes from sato to jake rushed. The whole final episode was kind of a mess and should have been broken into two. Kept checking the timeline the close it got to the ending until I realized the seasons opening scene wasn't coming, lol. p.s. I don't think Yimomoto is dead, Tozawa specifically said "if two high ranking police officers GO MISSING", "his conscious won't be an issue to him or a liability to me", so Tozawa is holding Yimomoto hostage somewhere probably as a chip to trade the Police for incarcerated Yaks or a get out of jail free card.
i just finished it, but i'm confused I feel i missed an episode. what happened the ponytail boss, Sato's first boss? they also talked about Sato's first kill, but I didn't see it. I only saw Sato killed the guy who wanted to have sex with the blonde.
I really agree with u she starts out like Queen in the mafia and doing all this thug shit but the other girls are so much classics than she and not all that pretty it’s amazing how Hollywood goes in a changes characters to sell to America standards I would have like to more Japanese women with speaking lines and character also they to spice it with variety these powerful men wife’s don’t get to speak suck come on Michael Mann u are the best noir films and I’m 71 been watching u for many years before a lot of your actors was born ❤

Is Gen another Tozawa mole like Kume, was sent by a senior Chihara-Kai member or was he acting by himself in stabbing Sato?
I think he acted on his own volition. Its been clear since ep1 he's been mad jealous of Sato. With Sato being an aniki now must've driven him mad
One thing I hate is that Samantha girl she is so annoying actually not adding anything to the story. All other actors are excellent.

I think Tozawa came to America for a liver transplant. That’s why he was drinking on the jet.
I didnt realize that the season finale was the other day
Great show, the only plot point I found hard to stomach was Polina, who as a mizu shōbai hostess herself, falling for a male mizu shōbai as a mizu shōbai and blowing all her hard earned money and going into debt to play the fake/kabuki relationship game of mizu shōbai.
It's a real thing. Hostess' also fall for other hostesses because they're lonely. It's a weird vicious cycle.
I agree I don’t think Miyamoto is dead either.
i just finished it, but i'm confused I feel i missed an episode. what happened the ponytail boss, Sato's first boss? they also talked about Sato's first kill, but I didn't see it. I only saw Sato killed the guy who wanted to have sex with the blonde.
You have definitely missed a few episodes buddy if you don’t recall either of those events
You missed episode 5 (Everybody pays)
watch episode 5 dude
@@insolus2307 his boss kills himself after he's found out to be the mole for tozawa.
@@hamzaghazi ik dude I watched the entire thing, the commentor did not
3:45 Duke❤
I like Masato Hagiwara.
I really agree with u she starts out like Queen in the mafia and doing all this thug shit but the other girls are so much classics than she and not all that pretty it’s amazing how Hollywood goes in a changes characters to sell to America standards I would have like to more Japanese women with speaking lines and character also they to spice it with variety these powerful men wife’s don’t get to speak suck come on Michael Mann u are the best noir films and I’m 71 been watching u for many years before a lot of your actors was born ❤
season 2 NOW
