My favorite TV show in the 1970's. Even to the point of his sport jackets, three piece blue suits and grey suits. I bought mine and many of my contemporaries dressed the same. He had class. Always wanted to ride in a black limo with a phone in the car and have a chauffer. His digs in Boston was also the best. He used to go to Anthony's Pier Four restaurant in Boston when he was filming there. He knew Anthony quite well and even had him on one of the episodes " No Stoned Unturned". His 1941 Packard was also great. Many great scenes of Boston. They do not make TV series like that anymore. My dress code copied his and in those days you would have to dress like that to enter any upscale restaurant. These days anything goes. Such a shame. George Peppard was a Marine veteran. They should have mentioned that in the interview. I have the whole series on DVD but I wish they would have in HD on Amazon. Thanks for posting the interview. Such great days.
I agree with you. The clothes looked so good on him. He was dressed like a prince and I wish he had never walked out of Banacek. Thirteen precious episodes.
Always love hearing from people who lived through these days. I was born in 1975 so I was too young to know about this show. I only became aware of this man on the A TEAM like so many others. Just recently found out about this show from watching it on my android box. Just started watching it and I love it already. It's a shame that it was so short lived. He was a great actor. I've been on a 70s binge and I absolutely love that era of TV. Can't wait to discover and watch many more

George Peppard did a great job on Banacek. Part of the NBC Mystery Movies. McCloud, Columbo, McMillan & Wife, Snoop Sisters, Hec Ramsey. Saw during school holidays and vacation periods. Last time I saw this in reruns was on Hallmark Channel.
The reason that's usually given is that he was divorcing Elizabeth Ashley and didn't want her to get the money he was making. So he quit. He must have just split from her at the time of this interview when he says he's a bachelor. Whether that's the real reason the show ended, we'll probably never know.
Great interview with the Peppard, he seems a very switched on sharp character, I 've read a lot about him being not very nice on the A-team etc and he apparently admitted he wasn't so himself but he seems very polite and friendly in this clip. He gives a very natural and open chat. Great interview Bobbie and you are looking so fine in that pink.

Peppard's put down of his character is not unlike some critics' complaints about Banacek in "Banacek." He mentions he's a bachelor and by checking the dates we see he's freshly divorced from Elizabeth Ashley, on Feb. 28, 1972. That makes this interview occurring a few months after and before the Sept. 1972 "Banacek" premiere of the NBC "Mystery Movie" franchise. Viewers can tell Bobbie is really enjoying her job, conducting this interview; would not surprise me that she's smitten -- which tons of women are. Speaking of women, IMDB's "Banacek" page does NOT identify the luscious female wearing the mini-dress exiting the car's back seat and walking away from camera into the restaurant. "OMG -- those LEGS!; that DRESS!". A half a century ago millions of men were surely wondering if she's a local (Boston) hire or did the Universal casting directors send her out from L.A.? In ADDITION to wondering how much higher can that dress rise before the NBC censors insist on a reshoot? BTW Christine Belford, a Universal contract player, was a fine addition to the show as Carlie Kirkland. Rather unique circumstance -- yet most welcome in the outcome -- that she joined as a regular in the second season in the same role she originated in the pilot a year and a half prior. However, it's curious and sad that she was missing from the final two mysteries. WHAT'S the story there?! It's mentioned all over various media sites that NBC didn't cancel "Banacek," but that Peppard nixed year three out of spite to ex Ashley, depriving her of more of his substantial earnings from the show in her alimony payments. Universal and / or NBC -- if "Banacek" was indeed that successful and an important asset to the studio and the network's "Mystery Movie" franchise -- would have worked out some financial arrangement either bumping up Peppard's salary to cover the considerable obligation or make a deal guaranteeing her a minimal amount of movie and TV roles of her choosing, letting Peppard 'off-the-hook' more or less. Finally, a minor point going back to an element in the main title. One would wish for that by the second season wiser heads would have ordered new, replacement footage be filmed of Peppard rowing during one their infrequent Boston location shoots in order to replace that obvious, phony process-shot of Peppard essentially rowing on the sound stage in front of a movie screen of the river and familiar skyline.

I ADORE the Banacek TV Series; I have all the DVDs. He was so smart, elegant, adorable, interesting, and the leading ladies, well I like most of them. I like the stories. The role fitted George Peppard like a glove; he WAS Banacek. I am moved with joy to see him in real life and how he answers your questions. He had a lot of German ancestry. George is one of the best things to ever happen to me. I envy you for just sitting next to him. George is so handsome and intelligent.

I am sure a lot of people will balk at this, but George had a campness about him. A lot of camp people have that air of bitchiness about them and are known for being abrupt, and I think that was the case with George.
Those two had some good chemistry in that interview. I can see why they wrote Hannibal Smith for him on the A-Team - the mischievous, cool style is innately his, so he was perfect for it.
He was from Dearborn, Michigan not far from Hamtramck which once had a majority Polish population. The west side of Detroit had a lot of Poles as well.

That's a common lavalier mic from that time period of the 70s. A few years later, the much smaller clip on salt shaker style chrome mic was it's replacement.
Lol, as soon as the cameras are switched off, it's "$%&£ off!" "Get away from me," etc. A lot of these interviews contain false niceties - such a common trait in a place like Hollywood. "Banacek" is a good show and should have lasted longer. I heard George Peppard's drinking was growing out of control at this point.
