Molecular and nanomaterials chemistry | Seminar @ ICMAB

Molecular and Nanomaterials chemistry have been the focus point of my research in the last 10 years. In this lecture I will introduce some of the main research themes that I have been working on, and also present future directions of my research group at ICMAB.
With the goal of developing new emission free energy storage systems, we have been working with Norbornadiene (NBD) and its derivatives that photoisomerisation to the highly strained quadricyclane (QC). During recent years, the system has been engineered to have high energy storage densities (up to 1 MJ/kg), long storage time, (up to 18 years) and a record temperature gradient of 63 °C1-4. However, several key challenges remain, in terms of efficiency and long time stability which motivates further research.
Moreover, I will present device concepts for lab scale demonstrations5 as well as heat release devices based on molecular photoswitches. In another effort, nanoparticles and supramolecular structures of particles have been made for application in sensors6-7, catalysis6-7 and molecular electronics8-9. Examples include self-assembled hybrid nanoplasmonic sensors6, single molecule electronic components8-9 and scalable, plastic plasmonics nanoparticle systems. In recent years, flow chemistry has been used as an enabling tool for scalable synthesis of nanoparticle systems.
In a third part of my talk I will present some of my plans for the research group at ICMAB.
Bio:
Kasper Moth-Poulsen studied organic chemistry at the University of Copenhagen where he obtained the Cand. Scient. (2003) and Ph.D. (2007) degrees. After the Ph.D. degree, he worked as a postdoc. in the Bjørnholm lab. In 2009, he continued his career at the College of Chemistry at U.C. Berkeley, where he worked with professors Rachel Segalman and Peter Vollhardt. In 2011 KMP was recruited to Chalmers University of Technology, as an assistant professor. In 2014 he was promoted to associate professor in 2017 to professor (bitr. prof.) and in 2019 full professor. Since 2020 KMP is the head of the division of applied chemistry at Chalmers. Since October 2021 KMP is awarded a professor position at the Catalan Institute of Advanced Studies (ICREA) and joins the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) as a professor.
Moth-Poulsen leads a research group of approximately 10 PhD ressearchers and post docs and a number of bachelors, masters and visiting students. He is associate editor of Journal of Materials Chemistry C, and Materials Advances. He has recieved several major grants and awards including Starting and Consolidator grants from ERC, Göran Gustafsson Prize in Chemistry from The Royal Swedish Academy of Science 2021, Norblad-Ekstrand Medal from the Swedish Chemical Society 2021, and the Arnbergska Prize from The Royal Swedish Academy of Science 2019. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and is active in several start-ups and spin-out companies including Con-Science AB, Solartes AB and NanoScientifica Scandinavica AB.
