Almost an entire year has past since I filmed this video and I've just now finally qualified for Ad Revenue sharing. I'm very pleased to reach this beginner's milestone. Everyone should have a reachable goal in mind at all times. This was mine. Now I'll have to set a new goal for 2022. I think I'll shoot for getting my first paid sponsorship. hahaha Thanks to everyone for subscribing and watching and supporting this channel. I'm just a great-grandma trying to make a creative, relaxing difference in this chaotic (often bland) world. Happy creative adventures to everyone! Blessings.
would you mind giving me a simple clear explanation of what a masterboard is? I thought they were boards you design on top of (like palette papaers which Im still not sure what they are) but it seems they are premade collages? Thanks!

So happy to have you join me. Very pleased you learned something new. I'll try to bring an in-depth look in each video I do. Many thanks for your comment.
Absolutely wonderful video. I can't believe it's your first! Your voice is soothing, instructions are clear and very informative, and you offer great tips. This is among the best video of its type I've seen and I've seen a lot! Please continue to do more and thank you for sharing your creative spirit with us. You are most generous!
Thank you so much, Wendy. What a nice compliment. I do enjoy making the videos and it is encouraging to know that viewers find them helpful and as you say, "soothing" too. I just found your channel! I really enjoyed watching you create the vertical collage board; it was very nice , when completed. I will definitely watch more of your work!!🎉🎉
You did great for your first time! You're slow & methodical, & explain what you're doing & why. I love the diagonal Master Board! Would you consider doing a video on how to make a Writing Board for journals? Thank you, & good job!

Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with all of us. You've inspired me and am so thankful because I have been going through a bit of an artist funk or a creative block lately. This really helped me move past it! I look forward to watching more of your videos!
Wow, thank you! It really gives me joy to know I'm inspiring others with what I love to do so much. I know creative blocks are real and tough to go through, but I also believe you wind up a stronger artist in the end. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for subbing! Always so happy to have someone new join us. I hope you'll watch my other videos too and gain even more inspiration from them. Would love to see what you come up with. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you for this video. I’ve never thought to work diagonally. It’s beautiful!!! Completely random is VERY difficult for me. This a very elegant piece. I’ve learned a lot. I look forward to seeing your future work. 💜
Oh my, what a wonderful comment. I'm so happy you found something new to inspire and challenge you. I'll be doing a random tutorial soon. Once you learn a few tricks, it will become easier; as long as you are unhappy with your results, just keep adding more until you find yourself pleasantly surprised and happy. That's what's so fabulous about collage. You just keep going until it works for you. Also turn your pieces around and look at your work from different angles. This solves many issues just doing that.
@@MissDarlingArts I really liked seeing you do that. Never thought to turn it to really SEE IT at different angles. I’m pulling papers right now to give the diagonal a try. 😀
Hello beautiful. Just turned on my device to utube and there you were. Very cool demonstration and creative talent. I have never done these boards. You have inspired me to get more creative and explore this opportunity. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and creativity with us.💓🌞👍
You are so welcome, Tina. And you are beautiful too. Thank you for the kind comment and I'm so pleased you have been inspired. I have many more masterboard tutorials and also other subjects as well. Just check my Playlist for what appeals to you. Thank you again for your very nice comment.
Thanks for subbing, Beverly. I'm very encouraged by your comment and hope you find every video to be pleasing and helpful. So happy to have you join us. Thank you for the comment, for sure.
Awesome, thank you, Cheryle. So nice of you to say that. I've had a few complaints about the music, so now in current videos you just hear me, for good or for worse. I do hope you subscribed and will continue to find the channel calm, relaxing and instructional, as that was my goal. Many thanks for your comment.
Yes, indeed, Dawn. Now you have to make one. I just posted a tutorial on making a horizontal style masterboard. Check the masterboard playlist on my channel and you should fine it easily. Thanks for your comment.
Glad it was helpful, Ngaire. I have more tutorials on the channel. Just check the Channel home and look for the Masterboard playlist. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you so much, Rebecca. I'm very pleased you like what you've seen. I've got more masterboard training coming in a day or two. I hope you'll subscribe and join me again.
Wow ! I love the planned styles . I actually just realized why the master board i made came out LOUD !!!! Most of my papers from my scrapbooking are indeed colorful and bold . I going to pull neutral pieces-out and cut strips . Thanks for sharing your technique, i love it . Also I just caught on the torn look a little more calmer with square and rectangular pieces but random tones . My scraps unusual shapes and maybe too many patterns . I just saw Teal and Tattered Artymaze earlier and learned rule of three . I am coming over back and forth from Adult Coloring. You just made me realize a lot of tips and tricks with color combinations and values can be applied here . 😀 my busy board I made I put a preset vintage style napkin over it to tone it down but used wrong glue and did it decoupage. So now it too thick . I save it hang it in my craft room . Try again. It is so fun junk journaling. My board was more like mixed media Art not a background for tags and journaling cards . I learned a lot thank you !!
Hi Gail, I am so pleased you are learning from me and others. Artymaze is one of the best in the biz. I come from many decades in the art and interior design industries. The rule of 3s really is only associated with where best to put one's focal point if one is creating an asymmetrical design, but does not apply if doing a symmetrical design (where the left side mirrors the right side). So I hope you don't think that applies to everything. And beware anyone saying they have a "formula" for doing collage; there is NO formula for real artists, however there are some design principles that greatly improve balance, among other things, and that is super important. The background doesn't have to be neutral, however a soft tone allows more choices of focal points. The darker the background, the harder to find good focal points that will stand out against the background. I also teach the importance of color harmony, warm vs cool colors, as you just learned. Watch the 51 masterboards video (in desc box). I do a long discussion of other very important design principles to help you. As for your masterboard that is now too thick, scan it and print off a copy (I invented the term copyboard) and use that to further embellish or tone down. All is never lost to our good use. Turn that into two journal pages or for cutting up into ephemera. I rarely use my masterboards in a journal; everything is usually full of copyboards, so I always keep my original art in tact and still useful to me. In interior design we recommend no more than 4 colors in a room and no more than 3 patterns in a room. And we always vary the percentages of color and the sizes (scale) of patterns, always doing some repetition as well for unity. So limiting your palette is important. By toning down your values (brightness or darkness), controlling your patterns, making sure your colors harmonize and your focal points stand out from the background, you should instantly see more success. Lastly, go to my channel and find the Playlist just for masterboards. You'll see I've published many MB videos and many focus on specific art styles as well. One is called "overlapping shapes" where I teach about tearing out random shapes and overlapping them one on another (unlike the straight edges style shown here). So far I've covered horizontal, vertical, meandering, and diagonal boards, and a couple others, but there are 13 major art styles we can utilize for masterboards. If you wade through those, you'll be an expert and that will last you for a lifetime. Thanks for your wonderful comment. Much appreciated.
You are so welcome! We all were new at one point. Hope you'll stay for awhile to learn more. Be sure to hit the bell and hopefully UA-cam will alert you. But best to deliberately stop by the channel itself and pull up the play lists. Thanks again.
You’re amazing! Love your style. Your calming instructions with soft music is a great touch. Thank you for the information on warm colors and cool colors..... I don’t usually thin that way. Excellent first video; congrats. I’m going to make a master board right now. Keep up the fine presentations. 🌺🌹🦋
Fear stops all of us if we let it. I am so pleased you found me and now feel able to jump in. Remember it’s only paper and can be thrown away or salvaged by just gluing something else on top! Best wishes.
Wonderful tutorial, thank you for sharing and explaining the process. I've never heard of master boards, and I've been doing junk journals for years. Seems so simple, thank you. I just wanted to let you know that when you have music in the background, people who have hearing aids cannot filter out the music, therefore cannot hear you. 🙂 Have a great day.
Thank you for letting me know about the hearing impaired. Please watch a current video where I have greatly softened the music and let me know if it is still an issue. If so, I'll delete the music for sure going forward. Thanks for your comment.
I'm so glad, Jannell. It is, I think, far easier than people expect it to be. I have many more videos on making masterboards and hope you'll take some time to view them as well. See my Playlists at the channel home page.
Well Australia, hello back. I watch a lot of videos from Australia. Would love to visit but it's just too far away. Sigh. Thank you for the compliment. I have a lot more videos on masterboards. Just check my playlists.
Wow! I love 💗 your style. Making everything look so easy. You explain everything so nicely. Wonderful tutorial. You are my new favorite for paper crafting. Would you be interested in talking with about how you got started? And how to do a video?
Yay! Thank you! I have a daughter in the business (her channel is Swoop) and she set up the equipment and even bought much of it for me. My studio is very crowded and I wanted a set up that could stay in place at all times as there is nothing more deflating to one's motivation than to have to set up and tear down equipment all the time. But it does have some disadvantage when trying to show dimensional products, which I rarely do, because of that (I also do decoupage). I have been thinking of doing some videos on my favourite tools and supplies and resources, and I could add equipment and such to the list. I just wonder how many people would be interested in the video end of it all. Anyway, I have read your request and will, of course, do what I can. Thanks for your wonderful comment.
I'm so glad, Nora. I'm so happy you found me too. I hope you will subscribe and that you'll find all the help and inspiration you seek here. Thank you so much for your comment. It encourages me greatly.
I have had more fun creatively doing my master boards. I be used them in tons and tons of projects. I usually use a 12 x 12 background Manila card stock and work from that, as I cut them down after I sew them. I use paper fabrics ,trims and embellishments. The rest you show I do exactly with the paper tones. ,
That is awesome, Julie. Do you sew the 12x12 into the interior or just around the edges? I can't put something very wide in my machine, especially if it is rather stiff. But they really are great, aren't they, and so practical?
Thank you for your comment GMA. I have several videos on the channel featuring masterboards and a complete playlist for them. I'm pleased you found my video of value. Blessings.
I'm so happy to know that, especially since it was the first video I ever made. I hope you'll find my whole body of work here to be valuable. Thanks so much for your comment.
@@MissDarlingArts I have watched a few more of your videos and learned so much. I’ve used journals for years, but the new ( to me) vintage junk journals with pockets and journal cards are so interesting! I’m using my own photos, old report cards from my children and lots more that was just sitting for years in my cedar chest! Your calm, easy going way of demonstrating and explaining your process is just what I was looking for. Thanks Again🌸
This was very well made and relaxing It made me feel like I can also do it bc you keep saying if you don't have this you can also use this bc I don't have a lot except for the want to make things I'm happy your channel is here 😍❤️
I'm so glad you enjoyed the training, Himariya. What a beautiful name. I didn't have a lot when I started, but you acquire tools and supplies over time. Perhaps think ahead as to what you'll want or need next and set a schedule to purchase or make what you need. It's a process: acquiring tools and supplies and gaining knowledge and experience in just making something every day. I make something every day and it keeps me focused and enthusiastic. Happy to have you join me.
I believe you are a great teacher, and love watching your video. It would be very nice if you turned the music down or even eliminate it. Then I can hear you better without distraction 🥰
Ok, thank you. It was my first ever video and the music was not loud on my computer and I didn't know it could play louder on other devices. I have since turned it way down regardless, unless I'm not speaking at all. Example, yesterday's True Crime Craft Time video has no music at all during the story telling time and only music toward the end when I am finishing up making the masterboard. You'll find that video under the Masterboard Playlist on the channel home page. But your point is well taken and I have already corrected that mistake in subsequent videos. But I thank you for your nice compliment. I hope you'll subscribe and write me again should you have an issue hearing anything. Much appreciated.
I really enjoyed this video. I've been wanting to make a masterboard but really didn't know where to start. Thanks to you, I will give it a try. The only thing I thought was distracting was the background music. I think your videos would be much better without the music. I almost quit watching the video because of that. I'm glad I decided to keep watching because your video was very informative. The music was very distracting, though. I did give your video a like and subscribed to it, however I would have to turn the sound off because of the music.
I totally agree with you. It was the first video I ever made and thought I had properly reduced the music level, but I had not done it correctly. So I do apologize. Now I only use soft music when I’m not speaking and have learned why my attempt back then was unsuccessful. Thanks for hanging in as long as you did.
Sorry about that, April. I guess it depends on what device you're listening to as most people love the music. It was my very first video, so I ask you to cut me some slack. Current videos have much softer music. Thanks for your comment.
Great teaching video. I have to say the music was rather loud and became irritating after a while. I did learn alot as a new journal maker and I thank you.
I’m so sorry about the music. It was my first ever video and I did not know how to properly lower the music volume for other devices. But I’m very pleased you found the training helpful. I’m not using any music at all in current videos. I hope you’ll keep watching and growing.
Hi new to Channel. The music background is bit irritating , as I'm trying to listen to you. Getting interrupted by the music. Otherwise it was good. I love masterboards.
Sorry for that, Kara. I have ceased doing that. I was brand new and didn't lower the volume way down as it was supposed to be. Now I only use music sparingly and at a very low volume. I hope you'll subscribe and give me another chance. Thanks for your comment.
Love the subject, your voice and manner of presentation. I would appreciate no music in the background however; I find it very distracting, probably due to partial hearing loss. Just a suggestion, keep smiling ;o)
Sorry about the music, Suzanne. It was my first video ever and I did not understand yet how to lower the volume on each separate music clip. I do now. I hope you keep watching. I do have some ASMR videos where there is only music and the sounds of crafting but no voice, and the voice videos usually have no music (or only one song faintly in the background at the end). Trying to meet as many wishes as possible. Peace and blessings.
Masterboards are generally flat collage boards or sheets large enough to be folded or cut in two as pages in a journal. They can be highly embellished or simple backgrounds that are embellished or left as is in a journal. They can also be cut down into various types of ephemera for a journal such as tags, postcards, art cards, bookmarks etc. or can provide backgrounds for making clusters to decorate covers or pages within a journal. Some people even frame them as collage art to sell or for their home. They can be made by hand or on a computer. Hope this helps.
Great tutorial, but the music is like listening to an annoying video game, please ditch the music. A vast majority of crafters love to hear the sounds of scissors snipping paper and the crinkling of paper and the rustles and rummaging sounds. I admire you for making vids, I haven’t even gotten that far myself yet. xxx
Yes, I have decided not to use music any longer. But you make a great point about the sounds of the crafting itself. Thank you for speaking up and letting me know your thoughts.
Hi Gina, Thanks for your question. I added music to fill in when I'm not speaking and because I'm trying to create a channel that is relaxing as well as informative. Depending on the device, I'm seeing that the music two months ago (when I was brand new) was too loud and I'm experimenting with much lower volume or no music at all. Which do you think you would prefer? The verdict is still out, but certainly I think the music should be much softer.
@@MissDarlingArts I enjoyed the music. I wanted to comment about how nice and different it was plus, the music itself is really good. Thank you for sharing your art with us!
I'm very sorry the music annoys you. I'm new at this and trying to find a way to teach and show how I create while providing a soothing place for relaxation too. I've discovered that the music, which is designed to be very low key, is stronger on some devices, much to my disappointment. I have taken efforts to lighten it in my recent videos so that it is not an annoyance but yet provides something hopefully soothing when I'm just working and not teaching. You happen to be watching my very first ever video, and I can only advise you to turn the volume down on your device until you can just hear me speaking and then it's much better. The videos on my current videos are much better now that I learned how to control the volume better and realized that the volumes can be quite different depending on one's device and speaker system. But I appreciate your comment and hope you'll stick around a little longer and see that I have been correcting the volume and seeking other music as well to reach my objective - and yours. Thanks for your comment.
@@MissDarlingArts Thank you for your reply. I simply would prefer to hear you speak with no background music at all. If you were not speaking then fine add in some music; but for me, it is very difficult to hear your voice with music playing and competing at the same time.
@@svaneska I totally get it. But it is impossible for me to add music for just when not speaking as I am just learning how to edit, it takes untold hours to do that kind of intricate editing, and I certainly couldn’t do a video very often then. I also have physical disabilities in both hands now (carpal tunnel and trigger finger) and facing probable surgery made worse by computer usage. So my choice is music at lower volume or no music at all. Frankly no music takes far less time to edit, however other people comment that they love the music, even when it has been louder, so I have to evaluate their preferences as well. In the end, perhaps I’m just not the right creator for you. However I do appreciate your comments, I do, and current videos have much softer volumes for the music, and I do know that viewers can adjust the volume on their devices as well. So for now I hope to please as many as possible. There are tons of people with no music and literally no editing at all so there is someone for everyone, sort of. In either case, I do wish you the very best going forward. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments. Peace.

Just found you and subscribed. I'm still quite new at this and never thought of a diagonal layout. Thank you for inspiring me to try it.
Thanks for subbing! Always so happy to have someone new join us. I hope you'll watch my other videos too and gain even more inspiration from them. Would love to see what you come up with. Thanks for your comment.
wonderful ideas and tips, and time for me to have a sorted set of scrap containers.
I do save scraps! They come in handy don't they.
That is beautiful and a great job on the tutorial. Thoroughly enjoyed it and looking forward to more. I have subscribed to your channel. Thank you.
Thanks for subbing, Beverly. I'm very encouraged by your comment and hope you find every video to be pleasing and helpful. So happy to have you join us. Thank you for the comment, for sure.
Thanks for the video. You have a calm way of instruction that I really enjoy. I'm looking forward to watching what you do in the future. :)
Very interesting and well explainned. Thank you for sharing! Thumbs up!
You're very welcome. Just put up another one on vertical masterboards today, if you're interested.
@@MissDarlingArts, yes, of course. Thanks.
I have never made a master board now I may have to!
Yes, indeed, Dawn. Now you have to make one. I just posted a tutorial on making a horizontal style masterboard. Check the masterboard playlist on my channel and you should fine it easily. Thanks for your comment.
So interesting. love your details. Explanations very easy to follow. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful, Ngaire. I have more tutorials on the channel. Just check the Channel home and look for the Masterboard playlist. Thanks for your comment.
Love this masterboard Miss Darling, very nice (: I like watching your videos, a relaxing place to be 🥰 Please keep making videos! 💖
Thank you, Julies. I love making masterboards and have a whole playlist full, if you care to take a peak.
Never thought of gluing all my old papers together - thanks !
Yes, and doesn't even have to be strips, can be snippets, fabrics, lace, washi tape, torn pieces - literally anything at all.
Such a helpful video. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful, Mary. I hope you have subscribed for more.
I've been looking for an easy way to do Master boards and yours are gorgeous. Thank you for posting this can't wait to see more.
Thank you so much, Rebecca. I'm very pleased you like what you've seen. I've got more masterboard training coming in a day or two. I hope you'll subscribe and join me again.
Best technique video I’ve ever seen. Thank you!!!!
Wow, Sami what a wonderful compliment! Many thanks!
Primo...Your pace, voice, style and Masterboard.
Oh, thank you so much, GibberishJoyz. Hopefully I've improved since then, but I do appreciate your lovely comment. Thanks again.
I am new to scrapbooking. Thank you for your wisdom.
What a sweet comment ! Thank you so much! I hope you have subscribed and that I don’t let you down going forward!
Thanks for this tutorial. I was afraid to start as I am new at this, but now I have an idea on how to proceed. Your masterboards are beautiful!
Hi Angela, I have now stopped adding music to the videos, so hopefully everyone will be happy going forward. Thanks for your valuable input.
@@MissDarlingArts That's wonderful, thank you for letting me know. Now you will have more people to be able to enjoy your videos! Spread the word!
Thank you for deleting the background music. I will definitely watch your videos now.

I really enjoyed your design tips and the clean look of your masterboard thankyou & hello from Australia 🇦🇺
Well Australia, hello back. I watch a lot of videos from Australia. Would love to visit but it's just too far away. Sigh. Thank you for the compliment. I have a lot more videos on masterboards. Just check my playlists.
Great tips and I love the papers.
Glad you like them, Lisa. Please subscribe and join me weekly.
At 17 : 57 I was thrilled when that little corner piece fit perfectly.

Miss Darling Arts no I sew around the edges after I cut them down to the desired size I’m using for the project.
Lovely collection. Your style is similar to mine. Great video.
Thank you so much! Ah ha, someone with my kind of taste. Wonderful. Have you been crafting long? What are your fav colors? Just curious.
Please please make more videos like this… thanks
Thank you for your comment GMA. I have several videos on the channel featuring masterboards and a complete playlist for them. I'm pleased you found my video of value. Blessings.
I really enjoyed this video!
Got the same catalog on my art table for glueing.
Took me awhile to figure out what you were talking about, then I realized it was for glueing. hahaha Thanks for your comment.
This was very well made and relaxing
It made me feel like I can also do it bc you keep saying if you don't have this you can also use this bc I don't have a lot except for the want to make things
I'm happy your channel is here 😍❤️
I'm so glad you enjoyed the training, Himariya.
@@MissDarlingArts One thing that helps is when you listen back while editing, to try with and without headphones to see if there is a difference.
Hi Paperdoll, I have ceased adding music to the videos as of this week. I hope this pleases everyone. Thanks for your comment.
Love what you did new watcher here
Thank you, Noela. So happy. Hope you stick around for more.
You explain real good but, if the music was not in the background it would help a lot for me it's distracting. Thanks for sharing your information!
Sorry about that, April. I guess it depends on what device you're listening to as most people love the music. It was my very first video, so I ask you to cut me some slack. Current videos have much softer music. Thanks for your comment.
Hi April, I have now stopped adding music to the videos going forward. Thanks for you kind input.
@@MissDarlingArts I certainly will continue to watch. Your voice is perfect to listen to, and your talent is very evident!!
Oh, aren't you a sweetheart tho. Thank you.
Hard to hear you over the background music 😕
Yes, I know. I apologize. It was my first ever video.
😀 you are adorable!
Peace and blessings.
what exactly is a master board?
I have listened and have now stopped adding music to my videos. I hope this makes everyone pleased going forward. Thanks for your input.
Why the music!??
Hi Gina, Thanks for your question. I added music to fill in when I'm not speaking and because I'm trying to create a channel that is relaxing as well as informative. Depending on the device, I'm seeing that the music two months ago (when I was brand new) was too loud and I'm experimenting with much lower volume or no music at all. Which do you think you would prefer? The verdict is still out, but certainly I think the music should be much softer.
@@MissDarlingArts I enjoyed the music. I wanted to comment about how nice and different it was plus, the music itself is really good. Thank you for sharing your art with us!
Background music very distracting and annoying
Oh Please ... please, get rid 😆 of the background music!
Peace.
I have now ceased to add music to the videos. I hope this helps.
