    You could at least try a little to match the patches... The first was't different just because of tone. The filter was totally different, a small change there would have matched the other way more

      Both the Sequential and Arturia advertise that they include recreations of the Original “Factory” patches from the original Prophet 5. This is not our attempt at programming each to sound like an original, nor was it to make them sound the same as each other.

      Issue is that Arturia’s Vitage Presets (the original ones) are WAYyyy off. I painstakingly matched them with the original and then they sound 99% the same. The filter is slightly off in some rare cases.

    I know you addressed this in the video, but you really should spend some time getting the patches to sound closer when you do these comparisons. Otherwise you get the kinds of comments you see here were people assume that the software must be completely wrong, when of course it's going to sound different if you just put the same settings on the Prophet because it's analog gear and they all sound different. Dial it in by ear and then compare. I'm sure they won't sound exactly the same, but at least it'll be a decent comparison.

      @@Cyprusg21 I'm sure the plugin does sound like the Prophet that Arturia had in their labs while they were developing it. But vintage analogue gear doesn't all sound the same from unit to unit, at least with the same knob positions it won't typically. That's my complaint. I get that Jack just wanted to compare them out of the box, but the comparison is misleading, as you and a lot of other commenters here are demonstrating.

    • @Screaming-Trees
      @Screaming-Trees Рік тому +2

      @@christopherpederson1021 I guess from a composer/producer perspective it doesn't matter. A lot of that is about being convincing. How that happens is fugazi a lot of the time. I've faked guitars using a synthesizer. Faked it well enough so that a friend of mine that plays guitar for a living was convinced.
      Saying that however, I myself though would take the hardware. If you're interested in exhausting the potential of diminishing returns to its maximum then hardware is the only way to go. I think there is still an argument to be made for striving to actualize a work of art rather than just cranking out content. I think analogue is still better in certain areas. High register comes to mind for example. No matter how much anti aliasing you do analogue just sounds better in the upper registers. This is tangible and one area that can be exploited to make productions actually sound better. It is difficult exploiting the diminishing returns between plugins and hardware when you get into full blown productions because the plugins are so good nowadays but it is possible and I think there is still a lot that the hardware can do just that little bit better.
      There is of course the whole tactile thing with hardware. I've kind of grown sick and tired of moving my mouse around. The ergonomics of that kind of workflow suck and are ultimately pretty far from what playing music looks like. It is a necessary evil though. Who doesn't draw midi regions these days? I am tempering that with actually playing though. I prefer that. It can be difficult doing dotted bass lines by hand when you need tight grid performances though so you have resort to drawing midi sometimes. But yeah I think I'd take the hardware over plugins almost every time ultimately.

    Pausing video before the reveal and I guessed the real Prophet 5 were sounds 1,2 and 5 (I think the mod wheel is what introduces the helicpoter effect but it's been a while since I checked that preset on my rev 3....)
    While I did guess correctly, IMO the two give aways are the brighter sounds in the Arturia need to have the filter closed a bit more to dull them up. I've dialed in very near identical sounds with the Arturia that I have on my old hardware P5. Sync and resonance are tricky to model correctly, espeically back to back, but the Arturia is a REALLY good virtual Prophet 5. Even with the hardware, the plugin sometimes is just right there and so close that in a mix, I won't worry about recording the original if I'm in a rush. Or if I need more voices in software...

    I don't have either but have to believe a Prophet V, being analogue, having knobs that sweep, is always going to be more subtle and nuanced, aside from your wallet. The Arturia has been around a long time now, you might even call it a vintage virtual instrument. I don't know if they upgrade it or tweak it but have to think in some ways it is what it is. It's THEIR interpretation. Certainly it's the same sort of argument one might have when selecting plugins vs hardware. Does it get you in the building? That is the question a lot of people might think that's the most important thing. A reissue Prophet V is $3600 plus tax and a darkened room full of lego pieces you must cross barefoot in the US. The computer is a given so after that it really comes down to the synth or a midi keyboard and potentially a whole suite of sounds to explore. That is one choice one can make. Arturia used to bundle their stuff. Personally I'd prefer the Synth because I'd want to blend it with other sounds I have like guitars and voice.

    There's no point in comparing these two when the basic sounds are so different. When it's a software emulation vs the real thing, we want to hear differences in tonal qualities, not significantly different starting points.
